I think the key to having success for clubs like Benfica is to have a golden generation that can be convinced to stick together for a few years to achieve greatness, almost like Ajax did a few years ago before players like de Jong, de Ligt, Ziyech, etc. left.
Yeah Ajax didn't just have a golden generation out of nowhere though. What they did was buy and sign very able role players and one underrated player who really is absolute world class in Tadic. With that the core was set and basically they can consistently rotate youth players in and keep a solid experienced core intact. Ajax has been very consistent for years now, Benfica much less so. There is no reason why Benfica can not do the same thing or Porto for that matter. But let's be clear here, what Benfica is doing now is already worthy of lots of respect, they punch above their weight very often and it's great to see such underdogs do well.
For those mentioning Ajax, Benfica is affected much more than them. They don’t even win the Portuguese league anymore as a result. Plus, Ajax isn't even the 2nd most affected; it's Porto. Portugal is the biggest talent hub in world football; no one else comes close. Some people mistake it's the Dutch league, but they're not comparable. As shown on the video on teams most affected, the Portugal league has four clubs with a total balance of over 1.5b, whilst the Dutch league only has one club, Ajax, with a total balance of 350m. We lose squads worth of talent every year, not a few players. If not for our population size Portugal league would have been a powerhouse; Unfortunately, that's not the case.
The situation is different because Portugal has Brazil and has Spain as a neighbour while Netherlands have Belgium as Neighbour. Portugal can get players from its ex-colony Brazil but Netherlands can't get much from Suriname or Indonesia. That's why, but it's also a curse for these Portuguese teams, they are not as formidable as Ajax.
Unless teams can build a dynasty of young players with low wages, like Ajax in 2019, it's hard to think we'll see any Nottingham Forests winning the UCL again
@@janarichter7928 there's 2 leicester city signed players in that team and 1 from the opposition team. It near impossible to Pull a Nottingham forest but not the exactly impossible considering clubs like leicester have enough scouting web to search for talents.
@@r3zaful it would actually be quite easy for Nottingham to win again. Just get a sugar daddy and spend 300m each transfer period until something happens.
@@r3zaful Yes, Leicester could have more of a chace to build a dynasty, like in 2015/16 season; but even then, it was a combination of them being good (81 points) and everyone else being bad (2nd place Arsenal with only 71 points). Big clubs have created a situation where rich clubs become richer and poor clubs, poorer, so that the surprise factor of our beloved sport is put in jeopardy.
As a benfica fan it’s very heartbreaking to see the top players always going away. And it creates a constant cycle of the roster, and it becomes impossible to create a solid team. But besides all the financial pressures, the players want to move the more prestigious leagues, like England, and it’s hard to hold them against their will. Even in spite of all the talent we may have , teams from little countries such Portugal, have no chance. The system ensures that only teams from big leagues may win the CL.
Just to clarify, Ederson played for Benfica's U17 squad in 2009/10, he was then loaned to Rio Ave for 2 seasons and then came back to play for Benfica's B squad and senior squads between 2015 and 2017. He played for Benfica's U17, U19, B and senior sides, he's an academy player.

@@abhaydeepsingh3368 and then don't be fulled by the money they say its profit, because it is not, most of the money goes to shareholders and agents since it is a public company with shares. @@abhaydeepsingh3368 I don’t know neither, but you can assume that they spend a lot in marketing, much more than the other 3 clubs in Portugal, the most known ones, and that gives them good results in the sense that they are very well known world wide. But the fact they are a public company in the stock market they have to get to stain numbers in the balance sheet, so for that reason in terms of sale looks like they make to much money, but the work that was made and spent was huge so the money that really matters is not the so big of a deal. But all of this was an extra point that I was saying about the justification from the other guy, if all clubs kept their best players we would not have a market and all be good or one of the best teams of the world. It’s a lame excuse for the poor performance.

This is unfortunately a growing trend with smaller clubs. They get worse and worse slices of the money pie every single year compared to the big clubs so they need to sell their better players. Lots of smaller clubs in the big leagues suffer from this as well, they get a few good players and instead of building a squad they sell them. The worst part is, even if the club's directive wanted to keep them, they risk the players themselves wanting to "upgrade" to bigger clubs and either not playing or waiting out for their contract to end. So in a way they're forced to sell their best players, because otherwise they might lose them for nothing. Money has ruined the passion for playing for your club

tbf with the Portuguese league staying competitive in both Europe and in the league itself, there should be greater revenue to come from tv rights. Portugal is already starting to pull ahead of the French league and if Germany isn't careful, they could start falling behind the Portuguese league as well. Although I would say the Portuguese league could probably do with cash injections to the smaller clubs and sorting the TV revenue a bit better if they want to capitalise on this chance.
Yeah that maybe right but France and Germany have a lot more people that watch their leagues in their countries. Portugal will never match up the same broadcasting deals. Only la Liga and Premier League have a big international presence that results in bigger revenue. We'll never match up with our small population. It's just how it is
@@RodrigoroRex Ah yeah that is true, but I do also think that should the Portuguese league get to a certain level, they could definitely start packaging international tv deals better than the French and German leagues, which may still not result in the same amount of viewership, could amount to more money, as it would be a tv deal to various different countries at more value. Also tbf if they can take advantage of Brazilian viewership, then those numbers could shoot up more.

+ in Portugal, we have a crazy tax concerning wages. If a player wins 2.5M€ per month the club pays the same in tax so it actually costs 5M€ to the club. That's one of the reasons they can't afford to hold on to players.
Dortmund is actually a recent player of this strategy. They weren't even no. 2 or as dominant before Klopp I think. Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke, Monchengladbach were way stronger.
The key is really in striking a balance between the business side and the results side. Benfica fans have made peace with signing strong names fit for boosting shirt sales like Vertonghen, Otamendi and Weigl that are great to talk about but don't really deliver consistently as they once did. Obviously the fans would love for Benfica to be a strong European contender but the strategy has been for money making and not for glory. Their former president always promised great European runs and always failed to deliver still people would elect him to new terms. Until recently management didn't really seem that interested in Europe and coach Jorge Jesus disregarded the European competitions because he knew that most people are realistic and would prefer to be domestic champions than to have a quarter or semi final loss and risk losing it all. Benfica's president left because he is under fiscal investigation leaving his vice president in office. He then called elections and won but really the plan seems to be the same for now, only time will tell if he has enough charisma to change deeply set mentalities within the club. And also, as with Porto, the "profit" is heavily diluted when you account for the sums delivered to the many agents, scouts, youth teams and others involved in the transfers. It's a very dirty game of monopoly leaving us, the fans, in despair and the bosses with heavy pockets full of money.
@@franciscooliveira3449não muda.
Great video 👌 just one thing wrong. Benfica and Porto don't have a low income because of small population. It's because of the clubs structure where fans vote for who they want as president and so, there is little incentive for investors to put large amounts of money in the club because no matter how much they put, they'll never have control of the club
at Benfica we have a terrible problem which is called mismanagement. We have mediocre players earning ludicrous wages and also sign a boatload of bad players for 4/5M€ annually, money which could be put together to buy better players or pay higher wages
Comparative advantage means that nations trapped into specializing in agriculture are condemned to perpetual poverty, as agriculture is dependent on land, a finite non-increasing natural resource. This is one way that the global north keeps the global south in perpetual debt and poverty. This isn't even getting into how comparative advantage assumed that labor and capital aren't mobile, which hasn't been the case for centuries.
Crazy how you were able to tie Benfica and Porto topping the transfers profit charts all the way back to the Portuguese colonization of Brazil. 😂 Top work though!
Another big problem for teams like Benfica and Porto is that half of the salary from the players is taxes so is very hard to keep up with teams from nethersland or teams from the top 5 For exemple: Benfica whanted Mario Gotze from PSV. But in the dutchland he wages 3mil+ and is totally impossible to a portuguese team get to this numbers because 3millions clean is equal to 6millions gross Portugal is a very hard market but even like that Benfica and Porto manage to be strong teams in Europe
I was playing a lot of football manager since 2002. when you asked who makes the most, I was thinking of Ajax first then Portugal clubs, Sporting used to be the top but then I remembered how Benfica sells the top players, mainly strikers ever since like 2005ish.
One thing that’s important to mention Benfica still belongs to the people, the fans While clubs like Chelsea and ManCity are owned by multimillionaire companies that get to decide everything without consulting the fans In doing this, Benfica retains the values from its foundation “the club of the people”, and that os way more valuable than any empty international trophy Clubs like Psg, United, etc.. will slowly lose their identity, they’ll all be the same in 50 years because they’re all owned by the same type of people that are competing against each other They’ll be just another company and they’ll lose their fan base as a result of that lack of identity And that’s when clubs like Benfica, Ajax, Porto… will be on top of the world Because they’ll be only actual clubs left
As I saw another user suggest a video topic, I hope you won't mind me suggesting one too: "What is the legacy of the Heysel disaster / the European ban on English clubs?" I recently heard it suggested that, without access to European football with its glamour & revenue, the top English clubs (the so-called "Big five" of their day: Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton) decided they needed to elevate England's top league into a "super league" of sorts by making it more exclusive (cutting the number of clubs) & giving it a much more glamorous American-style TV presentation. The "Premier League" was born, replacing what was previously simply "The English First Division". UEFA took note of its increased popularity & adapted the European Cup into the Champions League. Maybe this is just English propaganda though! If it's of interest, the Wikipedia page "Foundation of the Premier League" has more details!

At the 1:47 mark, you gave OL in France Lille Logo. Unsure if your able to correct that but just thought I would bring it your teams attention. Despite that, great content as always
I think there is a major factor coming soon to football that might break this cycle. Teams like Benfica and Porto are forced to sell their best players because they can't generate the necessary revenue through the other 3 conventional sources (tickets, sponsers and broadcasting), mainly due to the relatively small portuguese fanbase. But if the inevitable superleague comes around and these clubs start playing a lot more consistently on the European stage, suddently their market becomes the whole of Europe instead of just Portugal, and all 3 of these sources will skyrocket. It will depend on how the tournment will be setup, but it is inevitable that a superleague will come in the next few years, and it might be the trigger that these teams need to break the cycle.
Oh yes my Benfica & still the most it can do is reach the quarter finals in the UCL! Basically Benfica Porto Sporting and the portuguese league in general is like we usually say in Portugal the football school of Europe - we get young promising players still developing their game and then when they reach the desired point we sell them for a big profit so we can bring more players and train them and sell them for a lot more and the cicle continues. Still UCL finals still continues to be a forbidden fruit although conquered but long time ago.
Benfica (and others like ajax and porto) will probably continue like this for several years because the other clubs mainly in England have several investors for example abromvich(i know he's already sold the chealsea is just an example) Speaking of investors, Red bull has already thought about buying a club in Portugal, Desportivo Aves I just hope that in the future we can see other clubs from other countries being UCL champions e.g. Benfica, Ajax and Red Bull Salzburg
Benfica has to pay their debt in order to be able to keep players for longer and pay a better wage. That was my main beef with Luis Felipe Vieira (former president of the club), he was showing profits but he never tackeld the club's debt seriously. Benfica needs to run on profit and no debt in order to compete in Europe, untill then it will have to always sell players in order to pay their debts.
Small suggestion, maybe next time try to focus more on the 3 big clubs in Portugal instead of only talking about Benfica. Yes, they are the ones to sell their players for the highest price, but this trend of selling academy players actually started in Sporting and is practised by all three clubs. Sporting and Porto also do this but usually players leave the league for a much smaller price. Examples of this are Luis Diaz or Bruno Fernandes, both captains, won the best player of the league award, but João Felix was sold for much more money despite not having a huge influence on the team. Porto and Sporting sell might even sell more players in terms of quantity, but in terms of price I have to give it to Benfica (Sporting supporter btw).

I remember seeing a link to a skill share course you studied to learn how to make videos, but now I can't find it 😢
Football structure so different compared to other major sports with a hard salary cap. Like it or not, it sucks for some small budget teams because they literally have zero chance to land top tier talent in their prime and win major championships trophies
And people still say the Portuguese League is crap. Yes, it's not a particularly exciting one, but Portuguese clubs are extremely resourceful (just look at 01:38, there's 4 Portuguese clubs in the top 10.) It's true these clubs are highly leveraged, but again, there's no billionaire sheiks behind them.
I think Argentinian players are more profitbale for Benfica than Brazilians tho. Yes theres more brasilians in Portugal but Benfica has a lot of sucess with Argentina players like Di Maria, Gaitan, Garay, Salvio, Enzo Peres , Saviola and now Enzo Fernandez
People really need to respect the Portuguese league. These clubs could hold onto the talent they develop and become European champions, but they have a strategy that profits them and gives us some of the best players we see playing today!
It's crazy to think the only people who really won the Neymar to psg deal is Liverpool 🤣, it's also impressive to think Liverpool really built a great consistent team from signing 99% of their players from midtable and relegated teams, that is really impressive, and the two players they bought for alot of money still turned out great. Liverpool run their club really well 👏
Fact is Barcelona are in a deeply dangerous financial situation, they are borrowing future earnings to fund these deals, which means they are heavily reliant on winning la liga AND the champions league probably for the next 2 or 3 years straight in order to actually pay for these transfers. Any less than that will bring them into further financial debt and honestly I can see Barcelona no longer being a football club in the next 8 - 10 years. Please can you make a video what will happen with Barcelona FC?
Thats my club! Its a long game that will eventually work in their advantage. Slowly starting to have former well trained academy players throughout the league, raising the level of the league. Centralized TV rights will benefit all clubs in the league in a few years making them all more competitive.A Portuguese club will certainly win a European Trophy in the next 5 years
In the long term Benfica benefits from this strategy because it uses its funds on improving infrastructure and buying more talent while remaining under fan control. So in 20 years we will see.

That's what they did between 1960 to 1990
For those mentioning Ajax, Benfica is affected much more than them. If not for our population size Portugal league would have been a powerhouse; Unfortunately, that's not the case.
what if the premeira liga joined with La Liga
@@jk-gb4et then no Portuguese team would ever win the league, they already wanted to do that, not worth it
@@ThePindar but if they did they would have more global fans (ppl watching La Liga) so they could become better with higher wages
@@jk-gb4et I remember when porto won the league 5x in a row, there were talks about them playing in Spain
Unless teams can build a dynasty of young players with low wages, like Ajax in 2019, it's hard to think we'll see any Nottingham Forests winning the UCL again
Then they'll be raided by big clubs buying their players and offering more money than they can afford.
We saw Chelsea last year
@@janarichter7928 there's 2 leicester city signed players in that team and 1 from the opposition team.

@@akioo9495 the thing he wants to say is they'll get to keep many if not all of their top players which were sold over the years. So this would have made them a pretty good team.
@@abhaydeepsingh3368 the same for porto and sporting that's a so bar justification to back up bad performance from the club. if pot kept all the top players they as well could be one of the best, same for sporting if they kept Ronaldo... lol
the excuses are so funny, the money is first in this football era
@@abhaydeepsingh3368 and then don't be fulled by the money they say its profit, because it is not, most of the money goes to shareholders and agents since it is a public company with shares. So they spend too much money on marketing and it works since they are the most known club from Portugal in the world. so with all of that its normal for the money they can put their players because of contracts that are not ending, so the other clubs have to negotiate, (ex: Holland was ending is a contract so that's why he was cheap and Nunez no)
@@henrikapturs oh i actually did not how they didn't properly reinvest the money from the sales.
It’s a lame excuse for the poor performance.
watching as a benfica supporter hurts 😔
Why? The future is for clubs like Benfica, dordmund, Ajax because they play the long game.
@@warrioroffpeace3673 How much debt Ajax or Dortmund have? That´s the issue here in Portugal. You´re selling 100M€ players (or 40 like Vitinha or Fábio Vieira or Nuno Mendes) and yet you have 1. huge debts and 2. having to ask for loans with big yields (more debt...) to pay running costs. Porto was even under FFP rules and had to postpone the payment of bonds that they´ll pay with...more bonds (or well, what´s left from the sales after agent cuts and so on).

That's the sad truth Benfica doesn't have oil money and billionaire owners like prem and other clubs have benfica it's from fans, they also don't have big TV rights because they play in a smaller league that's why they sell that's why that they are not the team they used to be, they are still good but it is not enough considering the history of the club the same goes for Ajax and others Football has changed on a bad way where only 💵 matters but i hope not only as a Benfica fan but also as a football fan that one day this will change again so that historical clubs like Benfica and Ajax can come back as european giants and fight for Champions league titles but to be honest i don't think it will happen anytime soon unfortunately 😔
Great video as always Atheletic....Because I live in Amsterdam I would add that Ajax is in the same situation..unfortunately. They have to sell a few of their best players at the end of each season. Therefore they rebuild and have a new team every couple of seasons. Unfortunately that means it's hard to keep reaching the UCL finals...But I guess you already knew that :)
What I don’t get is why clubs don’t look at the outside player wagers like the board. Ajax board earns far more then the players and what do they do? Absolutely nothing…
Besides I’m surprised that clubs don’t invest their money in order to have more future capital.
@@warrioroffpeace3673 What do you mean with 'outside player wagers'? I don't know what that is. Also not sure how the salary Edwin van der Saar (Ajax CEO) is. that's quite confidential. Besides there are expenses like the technical staff... I'm sure Erik ten Hag had a pretty good salary. Ajax and Benfica do invest the money in their respective academies...so I don't understand why do you say that they don't do nothing with that money
As a non-european football fan, I only view Ajax as kind of like a supplier of players to the europe big clubs. Plus almost all the 18/19 Ajax golden generation is sold off to a bigger clubs
@@ghaz7211 Indeed that generation is almost completely sold to other clubs, apart from Dusan Tadic. Unfortunately this is the business side of football that they operate in...and they have to sell them. They don't really have an option

When a rich club throws 100+m on a world class player's transfer, the ripple effects caused end up hindering the progress not only of the selling club but the other clubs the selling club may raid, and going down the same pyramid.

Great video though, showing why Benfica has one of if not the best academy in the world but nowadays don't usually go that far... although this season has been quite good
Benficas greatest trick was to make Darwin Nunez look like a decent striker worth forking cash out for.
tbf with the Portuguese league staying competitive in both Europe and in the league itself, there should be greater revenue to come from tv rights.
@@joshbrown2217 the thing is the french don't have good international deals. The one before the current broken contract was about 80m euros for the whole world excluding France when for the epl is more than 1 billion. So ridiculously low
@@Knys Well yeah that's my point, the Portuguese leagues could easily take advantage of that. technically they had pulled in front of France of being a top 5 league, although unsure if that was still the case when messi joined.
Benfica and Porto are 1st and 2nd for most profit in transfers. Sporting is 8th, Braga is 10th. Thats insane how 4 Portuguese teams are in the top 10. But they are also the 4 teams that completely dominate the league. That goes to show how much is relied on Player sales in Portugal

As a Portuguese resident I really enjoyed watching this video, thanks for making this 🇵🇹❤️
"Brazil and Portugal have complicated history " this channel should be paid each video is masterpiece salute from Brasil
Surprising that Dortmund wasn't on that list..!!
Great video 👌 just one thing wrong. Benfica and Porto don't have a low income because of small population. It's because of the clubs structure where fans vote for who they want as president and so, there is little incentive for investors to put large amounts of money in the club because no matter how much they put, they'll never have control of the club
The fact is: I am from Brazil and I live in Portugal.

This video is aimed at *you* 😄
at Benfica we have a terrible problem which is called mismanagement.

Its called the middle income trap.

Another big problem for teams like Benfica and Porto is that half of the salary from the players is taxes so is very hard to keep up with teams from nethersland or teams from the top 5
For exemple: Benfica whanted Mario Gotze from PSV. But in the dutchland he wages 3mil+ and is totally impossible to a portuguese team get to this numbers because 3millions clean is equal to 6millions gross
Portugal is a very hard market but even like that Benfica and Porto manage to be strong teams in Europe
I was playing a lot of football manager since 2002. when you asked who makes the most, I was thinking of Ajax first then Portugal clubs, Sporting used to be the top but then I remembered how Benfica sells the top players, mainly strikers ever since like 2005ish.
One thing that’s important to mention
Benfica still belongs to the people, the fans
While clubs like Chelsea and ManCity are owned by multimillionaire companies that get to decide everything without consulting the fans
In doing this, Benfica retains the values from its foundation “the club of the people”, and that os way more valuable than any empty international trophy
Clubs like Psg, United, etc.. will slowly lose their identity, they’ll all be the same in 50 years because they’re all owned by the same type of people that are competing against each other
They’ll be just another company and they’ll lose their fan base as a result of that lack of identity
And that’s when clubs like Benfica, Ajax, Porto… will be on top of the world
Because they’ll be only actual clubs left
very well explained

As I saw another user suggest a video topic, I hope you won't mind me suggesting one too: "What is the legacy of the Heysel disaster / the European ban on English clubs?"
I recently heard it suggested that, without access to European football with its glamour & revenue, the top English clubs (the so-called "Big five" of their day: Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton) decided they needed to elevate England's top league into a "super league" of sorts by making it more exclusive (cutting the number of clubs) & giving it a much more glamorous American-style TV presentation.

Thank you for making a comprehensive explanation of the transfer market. My only critique is that Lyon and Lille have the same logo in 1:38.
Eu aprecio bastante o esforço :) Obrigado, Athletic Interest e parabéns pelo vídeo incrível
Benfica (and others like ajax and porto) will probably continue like this for several years because the other clubs mainly in England have several investors for example abromvich(i know he's already sold the chealsea is just an example)

Ederson was in Benfica youth academy but then got released
Some things money can’t buy, like passionate fans. That’s the best asset of the club. 🦅👹

People really need to respect the Portuguese league. These clubs could hold onto the talent they develop and become European champions, but they have a strategy that profits them and gives us some of the best players we see playing today!
I feel like this is also the case for Ajax and Dortmund as well, but at a slightly different scale and different circumstances.
Mas Porto as well
They can take a billion dollar loan to be paid in 15 years so, numbers obv may not be right but focus on the idea 😂

Liverpool run their club really well 👏
I've heard Klopp is a mastermind at finding players
Centralized TV rights will benefit all clubs in the league in a few years making them all more competitive.A Portuguese club will certainly win a European Trophy in the next 5 years
The 3 big clubs have been doing that for a long time already.
Centralized tv rights is a very complex topic, let’s wait and see what happens.
Great analysis!
