JuVaughn Harrison's historic long jump wows announcers -- eventually
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 бер 2021
- JuVaughn Harrison caught the commentators, and the rest of the world, off guard with his eventual winning jump of 27 ft, 8 3/4 inches. The jump gave him individual national titles in the high jump and long jump, setting a record for best one day high jump/long jump in world history. Watch the full replay here.

The title is wrong. He never "wows" the commentators even with his record-breaking jump. Sheesh. Good thing JuVaughn's jump was measured with an objective ruler and not their subjective opinion.
It’s because the were focusing on technique.
The reason for the hate from these announcers is that they are both racist just like the dude from Oklahoma when the girls basketball team took a knee.
That is a good comment.
dont they literally say "WoW!"?
@@mm6461 not everything stems from racism
Is there anyone else who has been world class in both the long jump and the high jump? Dude is unreal.
How tall is he anyways? He made Matt Boling look like a little person!

A WL jump "did not look that good." - according to the commentators.
Ever watched Matthew Boling? He looks god awful on the track... but he still wins. Michael Johnson ran pretty damn ugly as well.
His technique did not look great.
Yes they are referring to his form and technique. If he can get those type of results with poor form, imagine what he could get with better technique.... thats what the commentators are implying. Dont make something bigger out of nothing.
@@avidadolares or it could also be telling us that the "better technique" is not the best or least something that's not suitable for him. Before Dick Fosbury all high jumpers used the straddle method and now everyone does the Fosbury flop. It could just be bad technique and maybe he can even improve even further with good technique. I'm certainly not an expert on this field, but it's something to consider at least.

Absolutely. First, he claims he does not stretch his legs in the sandbox. That's the opposite of this athlete does 0:38. Then you can clearly see the jump is way past the 26 feet mark, like by a food and a half. Sports commentators tend to make the most fact defying remarks, and that is because they feel compelled to talk all the time, this supposedly being the measure of how knowledgeable they are.
@@sorellman The commentators and the athlete would all three get in a huddle and vote you off the island. You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.
It looked impressive right from the landing to me. He was well beyond the 26' mark. He didn't need to stretch that far, and risk marking the sand with his backside, because he jumped that far.
This is the proper response. To STTTRRREEEETTTCCCHHHH out the legs would throw your upper body back and possibly result in a shorter jump. Form ISN'T everything.
@@ripvanrevs well form kind of is everything. It would just be incorrect form to do something which makes you jump less far
@Todd m I'm actually an expert on Olympic long jumps; I've watched several of them.
Agreed. I can kind of see what the announcers were talking about, the stretch wasn't as drastic as you usually want, but when the actual jump launches you that far you don't need to strain heh

I've listened to Ato and he had better excitement than this guy and that medal winning decathlete that they have a track named after. I'm so mad I don't even wanna use their names.
Yeah, they ran well, but their announcing is poor at best.
Listen to the same Olympic Ann's world championship commentating in the American version and then the English (British) version then the Kewi version where they have a complete noob announce sometimes.
The Americans are dry, get their commentating wrong the most, ignore athletes not on their sheet of paper, and are plain out the laziest guys out there. And they have a team of people that whisper to them. How can that be that bad?

Has anyone ever done this well on both jumping events? I don't think so
I had to calculate how many inches that equates to in total and then convert it to metres so I could get a comparative sense of the size of this jump (as all our UK and European competition coverage uses metres/centimeters). 8m45cm. That would have won the Olympic Gold medal in the last 3 Olympics.

8.45 m is the 22= longest indoor jump in history. Look at the quality of athlete ahead of him in the all time indoor list: Lewis (12 jumps of 8.45m or longer), Pedrosa (5 jumps longer than 8.45) , Echevarria, Emmiyan - some of the longest outdoor jumpers in history.
Harrison has the potential to be at least an 8.60m jumper outdoors probably longer.

Dwight Stone has been an announcer for over 30 years for track and field. With that said I want to believe they were criticizing his landing because the take off was great, height and distance were huge. The finer touches to his technique could make him easily a 28 foot or more jumper. He is young so it is entirely possible.
These announcers blow
Commentators are wrong, the only objective in landing a longjump is to get your hips as far forward in your center of body mass. The "legs stretched out" thing is a JV concept that just looks nice. He is using a technique where you let your legs slide out sideways so your hips can land further in the sand.
