    Peter Tork... introduced The Buffalo Springfield at Monterey Pop, rubbed elbows with the hippest musicians, and an extremely talented multi instrumentalist. Way cool.

    Having Jimi Hendrix open for The Monkees is like having Metallica open for the Backstreet Boys, but it gave notoriety to both artists, if they had Simon & Garfunkel open instead, I don't know if the response would have been the same.

    Yeah, its a different time period. Many people couldnt understand Hendrix on any level. It was that far ahead of its time. The act was so advanced that the very first American that actually understood him was David Crosby. Not even Steven Stills could actually grasp how good Hendrix was. It was Crosby that clued in the the elite acts of the time that this guy could possibly be one of the worlds greatest musicians. As time went on even Crosby was amazed at how far advanced Hendrix was as a guitar player let alone a concept artist. Crosby was a genius in his own right and had a whole lot of validity behind what he said. Paul McCartney had already confirmed this guy was the real deal and to beware of what was coming next from him, but it was Crosby that had to explain Hendrix was capable of anything musically, and much more.

      MAYBE MUSICIANS had some confusion about Hendrix but I never heard a peep about it, and I don't recall any of us who went to his shows being anything other than accepting what he was doing very naturally. For the times, with everything else going on--acidy-experimentally--progrock, and all the topsy-turvy-ness etc etc his playing just fit in with all the other craziness (not to take anything away from him).

    I think Jimi Hendrix was too deep for teenybopper Monkee fans, but both would recover from the disaster. Jimi Hendrix would go on to be an accomplished guitarist & The Monkees would go on to become beloved actor-musicians.

    One of the first songs I learned on guitar was "Different Drum", a song Peter wrote. I also saw Jimi Hendrix.
    I can understand what Peter says about pyrotechnic rock, when Jimi only burned his guitar once in America,
    and once in England. That was Paul McCartney in England bringing Jimi in England to Monterey as the first
    American appearance of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. I'm sure Peter was busy bein'a Monkey and learned later.

    The truth is Hendrix played the same act in New York clubs and nobody gave a shit about him. His career was floundering. Then Chas Chandler brought him to England and he became a sensation. On his return to America at the Monterrey Pop Festival he became a star.
    Same act, nothing changed, go figure.

    • @hazor777
      @hazor777 6 років тому +7

      Bullshiiiiiiittttt ...... it was NOT the "same act" - what a stupid assessment on your part.
      Hendrix was well liked amongst his peers , but at that time when he was in in NY the mainstream trend was not what he was getting into - but the musician peers of his were . His going to England was bc Chandler saw what was happening w/trends there : which was an explosion of interests in American Blues - which Hendrix was already an afficionado & ...well, basically a master of. So, in England he was seen as AUTHENTIC , and exploded bc of it . Shortly thereafter, the whole British Blues explosion AND psychedelica (the 2nd "invasion" into America) happened , and Chandler knew it was ripe to ride the "wave" , starting w/ Monterey . Also, The Experience was not with Hendrix in NY BEFORE he left for England, so that negates your point as well - and yes, they had a lot to do with his early success , even he knew that .

    So coy back then.
    You know that at some point Jimi said something to the effect of, "Fuck this tour! Fuck these teeny boppers! And fuck you Monkees for getting me on this!"
    And yeah, he definitely flipped off a thousand teenage girls who were screaming for the monkees while he was just trying to blow some minds with his music. No doubt.
    Still, kudos to whomever thought that was a good idea lol.

    Supposedly Hendrix gave the finger to the audience in Raleigh NC. It’s understandable though because he was opening for a ‘teenybopper’ group with white teenage girls who were scared of this black guy playing loud noise. It was a good idea until they put the tour into action.
