Nice to have another listen to this. As the noughties progressed, I fell more and more out of love with Radio 4 and I miss the voices that I enjoyed before. I came across an amusing narration by Mr Donaldson called "Anthony Blair Captain of School" by John Morrison which is rather enjoyable.
Such a distinctive voice, I remember hearing him on our GEC Starfinder III radio on top of the fridge at my mum's old house during the 1980s for Radio 4 news, I still have that radio from 1977 which still works! Thanks for doing this wonderful tribute.
Like PD I lived in both Egypt and Cyprus shortly after he did. I learnt to speak English by listening to BFPO radio and BBC radio transmissions. We had no television service. Peter Donaldson was one in a distinct line of eminent voices, of announcers like Alvar Liddell and Frank Phillips, who taught the listener how to pronounce "received English", alongside the correct grammatical syntax, as it is - or was - spoken in England, by osmosis. This tradition will soon be lost all together, which is a shame.
Wow, "received English"... pretty interesting and very very useful method to learn pronunciation and as a training method for future interpreters (to distinguish words and accents)

If 'Dom Pedro' is not in Heaven if I ever get there, I will cheerfully shuffle off to The Other Place. Truly, the Good Die Too Young.
