R.T.E were still broadcasting in black and white' up until 1976. The Late Late Show was the last program to change over.

The best broadcaster in the English speaking world. Absolutely no one could touch him and we will never see the likes of him ever again. Light years ahead of Johnny Carson, Terry Wogan, Michael Parkinson and Letterman (although Letterman is a different generation where comics started to host shows). If Gay went to the U.S in the 1970s, he would have ruled the world. Look who we have now.. that humourless poser of a weasel Tubridy.
I know Irish people who weren’t fond of Gaybo, but as a Yank I feel what he did was so much better than any of our talk show hosts except maybe Dick Cavett.

This was Gay Byrne at the height of his career in Ireland . He was fluent and engaging and brilliant as a broadcaster but most importantly he knew to gauge the difference between the trivial and the deadly serious when dealing with guests or topics. He definitely lost some of this knack by the 90s as we saw with the Annie Murphy and Gerry Adams interviews. We don't have a voice like this anymore in broadcasting. Thanks as always for posting these memories .

This was 1976 so Gay and the audience were laughing and being amused by the antics and social morés of people in Ireland in 1936, so 40 years previous. A youthful Gay here. He really was the king of Irish television. R.T.E should repeat some of these old Late Late Shows. It is interesting' that this was the first season in colour. R.T.E were still broadcasting in black and white' up until 1976. The Late Late Show was the last program to change over.
RTE started colour television properly in 1971, but it took them until 1976 before they bothered to kit out their largest studio - Studio 1 at the time for colour. Money was always a problem for them.

Interesting to watch Gay Byrne talk about Irish radio, when in his later years he admitted that his mother, father and their family very rarely listened to Radio Eireann, and always tuned into BBC Radio, either the BBC Home Service or the BBC Light Programme. As BBC Radio was largely available to all of Ireland, as radio signals travelled much far than TV did.
Same with the late and great Sir Terry Wogan him and his family listed to BBC Radio Light and Home Service and Radio Luxembourg
@@richardsharpe2966 Radio Eireann was just far too conservative and a company which was so controlled by the state and government, it was awful. Also, the amount of programming offered was a dribble. Rationing ended after the war in Ireland, but even by 1969, RTE Radio was still rationed. Even up until 1969 RTE Radio closed down between 3 and 5pm every day.
