      It's a shame that the studio/producers didn't keep this much more violent and bleak ENDING in the movie. They Already knew it was going to get a PG Rating (a first for the POTA movies).
      What a Great Performance from Roddy McDowall!!
      VERY Underrated Actor.If you want to see another Fantastic Performance that Everybody thought he SHOULD have been Nominated for but wasn't because of Studio Politics(?!?!) then watch CLEOPATRA (1963).

      Not unusual. In that era there were films that had G ratings that are basically banned today that were celebrated. For example, in 1968 there was a film called Robby that had a G rating. It was a story of a boy who gets shipwrecked on an island and survives there with help of another native boy before both get rescued. It was a lesson in racial respect, tolerance and freedom. The film is now banned inside this country because the boys go swimming nude in many scenes. Back then that was still G rating. I recall seeing it in a theatre as a kid and thought nothing of it but today the film is banned.

    • @peterp2153
      @peterp2153 3 роки тому +3

      Different era, different philosophy on ratings, since ratings boards are always subjective and based on “community standards” which evolve over time. An otherwise unobjectionable film with some “movie violence” (fake blood, nothing graphic) could get a G. It was also the era before G became associated only with animated films intended for small children.

    I once read an interview with Richard Zanuck, the producer of the first film. He said his decision to get Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter was based on the fact that they could be depended upon to convey everything with their eyes because the Prosthetics made normal expression limited and they would have to relearn how to create realistic facial expressions. This scene drives home what he was talking about. You simply cannot take your eyes off Roddy McDowalls eyes in this scene, his eyes are saying it all. He had by this time long mastered how to use the prosthetics for Expressions also. I think Kim Hunters Shining Moment of acting through her eyes was the close up of Ziras face in the first film when Taylor first speaks.

    The novelization included this ending which depicted not only Breck's death but an orgy of killing. The books also included scenes originally intended for filming but were later dropped due to budget concerns. One scene that was to have "set up" the film concerned a gorilla who was trying to escape the city but was shot down by police in a very graphically depicted scene. It was dropped because Fox didn't want the film's tone to be established too much too soon.

    Hardly a graphic violent ending. It's not like you see his head all smashed up.

      NY OneLove it was the early 70s people were more sensitive about violence unless it was rated r

      This version of Conquest is on Blue Ray,and shown on TMC sometimes.It is much bloodier than the theatrical version.

      It would have been pretty violent for a PG rating which is what the studio wanted. This film was pretty heavily cut in order to get that rating when it came out. This included making the ending a little less downbeat.

    Totally underapperciated movie in these series of the "Ape" movies

    although the new films are far superior in terms of production and special effects, they lack two things, story writing of the highest calibre, which was integral in the original films and the mesmerising and astonishing acting of Roddy Mcdowell who not only created a whole new way of acting with Prosthetic makeup, but he became the character itself, he WAS Caesar

    It will never be recognized because of the status of the film and its genre....but I have always thought this movie and especially this scene--the way Roddy McDowell worked it is one of the best ever...Without the make-up no one would cast McDowell in this kind of role....but he was seriously misjudged for his talents... He is just great here.

    I always like the other END better- where Yoko Ono breaks up the Apes and makes Cesar go solo.

    The 60's and 70's version was the best. Roddy McDowell was the best....

    Breck was my favorite character in this film: a savvy combination of Dr. Zaius and Taylor

    • @vinvass2674
      @vinvass2674 7 років тому +3

      Exactly. Taylor and Zaius hated each other, were enemies to the end, in both of their films. Yet Breck combines them into one character. The 3rd film, Escape, was set in the NOW, although the 70s when filmed, it could be OUR now, 2017 or 2018. Conquest is set in the "near future", and that could be our future, 2030 maybe. We rooted for Cornelius and Zera in Escape, and baby Milo, before he became Casear in Conquest. We came to despise the "lousy human bastards" who Breck personifies. We want the Apes to win. We hate these aspects of ourselves and long for a better world.

    There need to be more movies with dialogue like this

      Those storytellers had "balls". Their intent was to write compelling stories, and fuck if some people would think they were too heavy or too communist, it will be heavy and communist if this makes sense to that particular story and it will not if doesn't. Now all the movies from those big studios must be "family friendly" and have the same neoliberal "woke" message all the time.

    Considering that the ending (and the beginning) was the weak point of the film, this would have tracked a lot more had they kept it in the theatrical cut.
    Shame audiences don't know what they really want.
