I LOVE that you bring up Reddit comments that are so confidently incorrect. It's a good reminder that even if someone SOUNDS like they know what they're talking about, you shouldn't blindly believe them. Reddit is chock-full of pseudo experts like this and it's very easy to be mislead.

I have three PhDs in internet sociology and I can confirm that the bulk of Reddit assertions are willful confabulations. Source: trust me.
My cousin entered a photo of an eagle lifting a lamb out of a farm field to a wildlife photography contest. They received terrible backlash from people calling it fake, claiming that the resolutions for the sheep and eagle were different, they could tell by the pixels and lighting that it is altered, etc etc. Straight up criticisms of dishonesty. Not only have I seen the full sequence of 12 or so photos taken of the event, I also know she sucks at photoshop. People are very willing to hate.
To be fair, the people you should really blame are the people who actually do fake viral videos. People being over-skeptical is almost always a result from having their trust betrayed by liars.

This reminds me, once driving down to my parents' house a hawk dove into the side of the road and flew off right in front of me with some small rodent in its claws. I was amazed by how clear the silhouette was and how much I could parse in the instant it must have taken. I've run into situations a lot where I try to take a photo of something and only then notice how much my brain was compensating. Sense of scale for large trees, or ignoring the surface reflections for fish in a pond, stuff like that.
@@adamsbja Yeah, the brain does Insane "post processing" of what we see, we can compare it to a smartphone, with their relatively bad quality cameras and the software doing a huge job, our eyes aren't anywhere near as sharp as that of an eagle, hawk or whatever, but thx to our big brains we can still see the world in a decent quality, the compromise is our pretty bad "input lag", the world we see is about 50 ms in the past, but its not a big deal since our brain can also compensate the delay and predict movement of things

That first bear one is completely flawless, not even like a real bear merged with something else, but all in the same shot flawless. That's definitely a tame bear.

First thing I noticed is the size of the bear. A grizzly (or at least one old enough to hunt) should be at least twice that size. In addition, you can hear the guy make a noise in slow motion but nothing from the bear who would be huffing and puffing like crazy.
If the first one was actually CG it's the best I've ever seen in my life.. I still can't tell.

Mad respect to you for mentioning CD here. I have actually found him a few months before you did the first VFX artists react together and had been binge-watching his videos, and to this day I'm astonished about the production quality of this basically one-man-channel, he's like the LockPickingLawyer, you can watch any video and wouldn't know if it was released yesterday or 6 years ago, because production quality has been so high and consistent throughout all those years.
And he goes waaay back as well, like maybe pre-2010. He's the grand-daddy of vfx channels.

Something I think would be interesting is if you do a series where people can send in videos they made (obviously fake) and you point out the flaws and technical issues that keep it from being believable. That would be really neat to watch, and could help a lot of VFX students and hobbyists improve their skills in the field.

@@4Sandrix there is no way the the drone pilot would be able to get an identical shot the second day, there would always be differences between flying one day and another, the only way that would be possible, would be if they towed out a camera crane in the forest, or a robotic camera arm on a dolly track, but I don't think they would bother doing that, as it would cost alot, and would just not be worth it, like they said in the video, its just a trained bear.
I work with bears at a wildlife rescue, they are creatures i know like to play making the first clip very possible if you had it well raised and was trained... and also you probably wouldn't outrun one if you actually had it chasing you
That I think is the biggest tell. When you look at 4-legged animals average and top speeds they can easily catch up to most humans. If they were being chased, I think it would end quickly.
Reminds me of videos of cheetahs 'hunting' dumb tourists getting out of cars. You would KNOW if a cheetah is serious about eating you because it would be outrunning Usain Bolt. If they trot over to you like a horse they are just being curious. They're not the sort of animal to randomly bite you either. I can confidently say this because in my work at a wildlife rehabilitation centre these completely wild cheetahs would happily come invesitage your scent while you pick up their poop.

Right? My thoughts were, 'You're not outrunning a bear, and this bear seems to be trotting along pretty casually. the only situation where you might see that is it there's cubs & she's just trying to scare you off vs attacking." This is definitely real but it's also very likely staged.
Maybe its just me but something about how bears move in real life is amazingly specific, just how fast they move for something their size, in addition to how the muscle, fat and, fur ripple just feels unique from most other animals and I feel like that makes animation of a bear that much harder than literally any other animal

Same with skills. I've seen way too many videos of people doing some amazing things, only for some wiseguy to take a dump on it, calling it fake or saying, Yeah I can do that if I try it a billion times 😂

this is the most casual use of orange and teal i've ever seen on a youtube video and honestly pretty f ing nice
(Animal Science degree here) It is hard to tell based on just a few seconds of footage, but I'd have to assume the person 'running' from the bear is probably the trainer. The bear's run looks more like a leisurely jog compared to its top speed, which is WAY faster than that. If the bear really wanted to harm the guy, its head would be down & it'd be digging more aggressively into the ground with each step. Generally speaking its body language is more playful than aggressive.
Yes, it's more of a casual jog than chasing down prey.

And bears can outrun humans. Running straight away from a bear is the first thing you are told not to do. Some of them can run up to 35 mph, and running makes them think you are prey.

Snopes has changed their conclusion to the video to *true.* The producer (Dima Smirnov) has contacted them to clarify the origin of the video. The bears name is Tom. He is trained by humans from birth.
The only thing he has changed was the sound of the video, because of the problems drones can cause recording audio.

Snopes apparently received an email with proof that the drone shot was real. It was a trained bear named Tom. Snopes changed their article to True a couple days before CC posted this video (but ofc after they had produced it).
So a nobody out fact check a fact checker? Not a good look.

Yeah I hate those people.theyre everywhere too. "Playing an instrument doesnt take any talent. I could do that easily" etc.
So many things are "easy" according to people who are completely incapable of doing them. Back in the day, I'd hear people disparaging realist artists (painters) as not being true artists because "anyone could do that" and "if you want a realistic rendering, you might as well just take a photograph" - because, y'know, photography's not art either and anyone can do it easily.
And of course, they're never going to put their money where their mouths are and actually *demonstrate* how "easy" these things are because - you know - such easy things are "beneath them" so you just have to take their word for it...
I admit before properly studying art i used to have those thoughts too, that photog has "cheats" because you can take a lot of photos, that digital art is easy because you have unlimited erasures, etc. But after going through art school and being exposed to almost every discipline (including music design and even fashion!) I was shown my place to say the least. And while i don't necessarily want people to get humiliated, i do think some need to get humbled quite a bit.

Love the educational angle you start taking with your latest vids. Way to go! Schools should start using them to educate Media Literacy. Especially in times of "Fake News" and digital "reproducability" (is that even a word?).
You also need to take into account that most bears can easily outrun humans, which is why you’re not supposed to run away from a bear if it attacks

@@J33zas If you can't scare the bear away by yelling and raising your arms to make yourself look bigger, then you drop to the ground, play dead, and try to protect your vitals. If you manage to stay silent and still throughout the mauling, the bear might lose interest and leave. That's your best and only play.
When you see claims like "It could be done in an hour on a potato!" You should try to replicate the shot in an hour on your worst computer just to show what that amount of effort would actually look like when done by a professional, let alone some random internet denizen.

those who claim it can be done in hour are the type of guys who take an hour to spawn a sphere, a.k.a those who haven't touched a VFX software in their life.

Iv been watching a lot of corridor crew visual artist reacts (fight scenes breakdown) and it has changed my taste and perspective in movie fight scenes completely, the moment i see mutiple cuts between actor's/stuntmen's moves, it literally just makes me lose interest. After reaction videos of fight scenes breakdown from you guys, i love and appreciate long shots that consists of well practiced fight choreography executed during the entire scene, and also keeping viewers clear ideas of who is throwing punches and kicks, who is in which direction, from what angle did the fight action start and where its heading.
Seeing a bunch of cuts in fight scenes throws me off the focus and there is just confusion along with the realisation that the fights were not interesting at all, and it seemed like a high speed action but its just camera work.

I am a veteran guide (rookie year '96) in Bristol Bay AK, and have had more than my share of bear encounters. (I ran into Timothy Treadwell on the Katmai coast before he was killed- yeah, Grizzly Man.) Real experience with real bears helps. I completely agree with the assessment of the videos- the first one has a bear that moves like a bear- often it takes a moment for the back end to catch up to the front end when they get distracted. By itself makes V1 real.
The guy was running with a hand in a pocket. If you're running for your life you would not do that. My bet is that they are friends. Other issue is that the guy looked back at the bear when he had the drone right in front of him... those things buzz pretty loud, your attention would draw right into it. Dunno. Seems like the only thing added was the sound.
@@Leongon Video is staged, but not CGI. A lot of other comments are talking about the use of a trained bear and how based on the way the bear is moving it's not actually aggressively chasing, more so this was likely the bear's handler taking it for a run and they decided to get some cool drone footage.
@@Leongon The whole video doesn't make sense. Guy running casually? Drone just happens to fly by in the exact moment? No information on the entire video about why, who or what? Yeah, it is staged, 99.99%, but I'm not a bear expert to claim how well bears can be trained to act in this way (fake chase?). Great shot though, I just wish people would be more upfront about what their videos actually contain, since this stuff tends to spread like wild fires. Hint: Don't run away from a bear and don't climb a tree, unless you know this particular breed of bears doesn't climb trees, I guess. At least that's what I learned...you can't outrun a bear, you can't fight a bear, you can't escape a bear. You just move away slowly without turning your back and play dead and hope for the best if it comes after you. But maybe that's already outdated info...thank god there are no bears in my country ... only stupid boars that I have also never seen ... luckily.
@@Diree No bears in my country either, but I know Black Bears are the ones that are ridiculously good at climbing trees, which seems to be the one in that video. Also pretty much any animal can be friendly and go for a job with you if you raised it or managed to befriend it and understand their body language to know when they don't want you close. There are shark experts that can tell when a wild one is coming close from pure curiosity and when is hunting, and they do enjoy being pet, so the guy being friends with that bear is actually the simplest explanation ;D
No doubt the bear is real but the bear isn't acting like a wild bear.
Don't have any experience with video effects, but I do have experience with bears (veterinarian at a wildlife sanctuary that houses a few). Given that the bear is jogging and not running full out after the person, that the bear can be distracted by the drone vs having single-minded focus on the thing that it supposedly wants to murder, and the fact that, after slowing down/stopping as the drone flies by, it looks back the direction it was going and then starts jogging again in a motion very similar to a dog being called back to the owner during a game of fetch vs just wandering off once it is distracted enough to stop charging all makes it highly suspicious that the video is faked via a trained bear. Also, there is my personal bugaboo with this type of supposed "real life caught on drone" videos: The drone just HAPPENS to swoop cinematically in on a random person running away from a "charging" bear; action already in progress.
Oh yeah it was totally a trained bear and owner being shot for cool video purposes, the guy didnt look remotely scared, he looked back like you do when you're play-chasing with a pet, I dont think they mean its "real raw wild footage" they just mean it aint vfx
your right, the snopes artical that said it was fake was updated 4 days ago and has proof it's real. the guy showed the full video unedited with proof the bear was trained. BTW the bears name is Tom

Also, this is a rather "small" bear, compared to a full size black bear, a grizzly or even a brown bear. This could very well be a youngling black bear, hand fed and trained - it just would behave like a dog. And just like a dog, you stand no chance to outrun one of them - they get very, very fast. If this bear wants to catch you, its gotta catch you.
Good on them for calling out ''fake sceptics'' who are just sceptical about absolutely everything and think they are smart because of it.

Since discovering the Crew, I have started to look at movies and shows in an entirely different light. I feel I can enjoy them way more now knowing so much more about digital and practical effects, stunts, and animation. It's entirely possible that there are many others who are experiencing the exact same thing. You guys have had a very "special effect" on the entire world of cinema. ;)
Sadly "plots" are still bland. To the point you can predict beginning middle and end of 95% of all movies lol. Even ones that are supposed to "make you think"

90% of other comedies "Person/Persons have issue with other character or situation and go out of their way to gain/complete or accomplish said thing" Most comedies have a stupid person that everyone doubts but they accomplish the task out of sheer stern commitment.
Romances - Either love life that is bad, shit goes down female/male have or get close to having an affair/breaking up. Isolation without anyone both people realize how much they miss each other, events happen they see the pros in each other again back together. Happy ending
Action - Badass/Multiple badasses Boom boom action plot, guy or guys set out to win some shit somehow some way, battles, (action is pretty self explanatory)
I can keep rollin but theres too many genres/subgenres to lay out but you get the point. They really do follow all the same plots. Humans don't lack creativity but Humans don't like change, and majority of the average joe likes to keep things the same, they much rather prefer to watch the same shit. (Programs/Programming) Literally lol. So many subliminal shit that is so low key within shows/movies too to program societal ideologies. Have you ever tried to talk on the phone with someone whos watching TV at the same time? They literally zone out and cant speak lol.

@@acidpoptart4270 These are movies that came out just last year and do not conform to known tropes and cliches: Lamb, Zola, Judas and the black Messiah, Spencer, Pig and The Power of the Dog and these are just the ones i've seen. There's also petite maman and Titane which i've not seen yet

About shadows, I'd like to challenge the Corridor Crew to setup a few real examples of lights and objects and see when shadows really overlap instead of only merging. Maybe Wren could make one of his awesome nerdy science videos exploring this and actually produce real examples of overlapping shadows. This would help to better educate viewers of how light really works, I think.
Another thing, funny how Captain Disillusion in his first video in 2007 used this "merging shadow" argument to help debunk the penguin slap clip. Maybe Corridor could try to replicate a real set inspired on that and use real light sources to determine if they can or can not make shadows overlap instead of only merging.
Shadow can be over lapped under certain conditions, which atleast need two light sources of different wavelength.

Super common in some parts of South Africa. Some golf courses are on river deltas or incorporated into marshland because you get the greenest grass with the least irrigation there. The crocs just love the nice ponds scattered across the course, and they get plenty of food from the large birds like ducks that live there.

Everytime I watch one of your videos I realize how much larger vfx is than I thought. Like I think it's massive and then there motes. You talk about multiple types of motion blur, scattering of light in snow vs other objects, shadows being replaced, the king kong bit about the feedback loop. There's just so much. Always interesting.
Love this new Debunk show, espacially with people moving in and out of screen, making short comments, it is a wonderful idea in my opinion even if it was clearly not intentional.

These guys have the most powerful eyes and brains to look at the most smallest little details and explain which is CG or real life.

Its all about what you are trained to do. They are CG artists, their job is to focus on the small details to make a believable shot. My job as an architect has me analyzing the design and materials of every building I enter. My sister is a biologist and she cant walk 10 feet without identifying a plant or insect next to the path. You naturally focus on what youve trained to focus on. Nothing about powerful brain or eyes, just practiced
When you work in the industry you train your brain to think like that
They're absolutely on point with their observations borne from experience. There are instances however, where common sense should alert us to staged video - for example, the girl skiing down the mountain seemingly oblivipus to a chasing bear would certainly have been using the forward facing camera of her smartphone in order to ensure she was properly in the frame. That's how you do selfies. Thus she would certainly have noticed the bear. No FX XP needed!

Love that you guys touched on the Dunning-Kruger effect. Before I started watching your videos, I definitely fell under it's effect when it came to VFX. But I feel well versed enough now after watching all of your breakdown/debunk videos, that I know, there is so much I don't know. And I not only see the skill you guys have for VFX, but also the artistry. Always look forward to my saturdays and sundays for your videos. Amazing stuff.

This is just a tip for those into 3D animation: [WARNING this was self-learned/realized so apologies if I'm wrong on some bits]
You should always keep in mind the difference between FRAME LENGTH and FRAME RATE, especially how they relate to video length.
As you are animating frames keep in mind the default 24FPS (at least for blender), if your frame length is 48 the video length would be 2 seconds. However if you were to only have an animation with 24 frames, with each FRAME keyed (for UlTrA sMoOtH boiiii!!) Also keep in mind that your animation might be too short for the buffer to read all frames before playing resulting in freezing/broken frames).
If however you have a super simple animation that's 45 frames, I would recommend using 30FPS for export (to appease the number gods for the P E R F E C T 1.5 second video length), with a keyed distance at every 5th FRAME (unless you like suffering you can do EVERY FRAME but this is NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!.)
Anyway that's my self-discovered tip.

I tried to make a pixar-like character in the 3D modelling 101 class I took in college.
It was really really hard. The model took days. The texture mapping was impossible. I seriously lost my mind and it still looked terrible.
And then rigging and animating it was the most difficult part.
People are so dumb. God damn.
Even if you had a pre built bear that you bought, the animation alone would have taken ages. And that's not even taking into account the environment and the camera/perspective change.

there's this thing called animation software helping you with your animation, all you gotta do is move a part to the next position it should move to and the software will handle all the frames up until that point, then you just go back and edit anything that moves wrong lol

@@ToneSherpa it actually DOES look pretty decent if you do it right and not just lazily throw it together, you DO still have to do stuff manually, but the software can help you do it faster, i myself am just far too lazy to do that even tho it's really quite simple, it only looks bad if you DON'T go back and correct what the automatic framing did wrong, don't say something if you have no dang clue what the heck you are talking about lol

Maybe I’m stupid, but I watched the latest episode of the Book of Boba Fett and learning that Luke’s voice was completely artificial was insane. The deep fake was also very well done and my first thought was “oooh, 20 years from now this is gunna be tough”

All bear chase videos are fake, because if you were actually being chased by a bear, you wouldn't be filming it. If you did, it'd catch you. Same for most staged videos. So there's really nothing to debunk or confirm, so much as just analyze and critique, the point Wren makes at the end of the video.

The first thing that popped into my mind seeing that first video was "must be one of those trained bears". It's not a crazy idea, there's a lot of people that live with trained wild animals. Bears, wolves, leopards, tigers.
I do some VFX myself and those people saying „nowadays it isńt that hard you can do it on a shitty laptop easily“ make me SO ANGRY. I literally spend days on a few second video to make it look right and those people have the audacity to say something like this. Thanks corridor crew for those very enlightening videos!
Thank you for this. The only thing I wasn't totally sure on when i first viewed it was the snow. It kinda looked like wet pack, but the bear clearly kicks up dry pack when he stops (but that's totally possible if it had snowed twice with both types). There also isn't enough to go on in that brief shot to say 100% what it is.
And yes, I am aware Snopes was apparently contacted by the pilot to say it was a trained bear.
I don't know if I could handle the thought of some kid in his room being that good at VFX. Haha

I think it's also worth pointing out that the scene from The Revenant is made for a movie, so has different expectations and priorities than a "live" bear chase. The bear scene in The Revenant needs to be unrealistic to a degree. Without the polish, the larger than life motions, and the control over the scene, it would too easily become unreadable to the audience and lose the story of the fight/attack. The "live" bear chases are looking to simulate reality, so are hampered by that polish and control, as they add a level of unreality to what should be a far less controlled and far more chaotic scene.
tldr: Suspension of disbelief is necessary and expected in film, but detrimental to live/real footage.
I think the animators in the Revenant scene are hamstrung by the fact that (SPOILERS) the bear has to lose the fight. I'm pretty sure a bear that size would have made short work of DiCaprio.
My favorite bear joke is two mates are hiking through the woods and they come across a grizzly bear who chases them both up a tree. As they sit and the bear is getting closer, the branch is sounding ready to break. One of the friends takes off his hiking boots and puts on his spare sneakers and his friend turns around and says "You must be crazy. Do you honestly think you can outrun a bear?" to which the mate says "No, I just need to outrun you."

You Should do the Bear attack scene in “The Edge” it was made in 1997 and is very supervising how well made it is
