    Hey, I'm literally the person that did the VFX shot for the Indy Mogul video, I'm also the person they show pulling the rope. It was a lot of fun. You can actually see the door change to a different door when it slams, that was the one thing I couldn't quite get done in time. Pretty cool to see them praise my work on this show alongside some real top level effects.

      It scarred me for years as a kid. If I was alone in a room with a CRT TV and it was turned off, I could scare myself to death thinking about it turning on, the image of the well, and the little girl crawling out of the screen. Day or night, didn't matter. The mere horror of the thought made me quake with fear. CRT televisions scared me to death for a long time. While it wasn't as good as the first one, the opening scene of the second Ring movie was just as terrifying.

    This has probably been mentioned in the comments already but fun fact about the Ring:
    In the original Japanese movie, Ringu, the actress who played Sadako (Samara in the American remake) was a kabuki trained actress. So all her unsettling, twitchy movements were actually Kabuki techniques meant to imply "monster" or "ghost." They also filmed everything she did--crawling out of the tv, shuffling out of the well, climbing, everything--backwards to give her that creepy effect. It's cool that the American remake actually kept some of those techniques for their own scenes.

    • @damienjohn
      @damienjohn 3 роки тому +9

      @@jackallenproductions As far as practical body horror goes I can't think of much in the past 10 years that hits the spot.
      "Annihilation" from Alex Garland has some great body horror moments and a lot of interesting themes. "Life" is a solid Alien/The Thing love letter but doesn't break much new ground.
      Other movies like "RAW" and "Possessor" are great but a bit too experimental for some.
      There's also an upcoming sci-fi horror from Neill Blomkamp ,"Demonic", that looks promising.
      Unfortunately the days of practical effects-heavy movies are mostly gone. Sure recent movies like "The Void" and "Harbringer Down" exist but I didn't think they were particularly good outside the creature effects.

    The 82 Thing is a million times better on every level. It was disappointing to know that they replaced all the practical effects with CGI but there were more issues to it than that. My main issue with the 2011 Thing is that it felt like the aliens weren't even trying to blend in with the group. They would always expose themselves so the 2011 lost the "suspense" that the original had. 82 Thing you're always wondering who could be "the thing" where as the 2011 version always gave that away, it just never had any tension.

    • @LLEntertainmentChannel
      @LLEntertainmentChannel 3 роки тому +72

      The fans have had theories about that. One is that The Thing exposes itself in some spots to create chaos and force them to split up. Usually, when it exposed itself, there were too many people huddled together, making it impossible to perform the imitation process.
      Another one is that people theorize that The Thing wasn't use to humans yet. It was learning their patterns. It was trying to figure out what is the best way of going about assimilating this race. So when it finally came to the camp in the '82 movie, it was a bit more experienced.

    • @ABlokeCalledDaz
      @ABlokeCalledDaz 3 роки тому +28

      That does make a little sense though, it as it feeds back into the 1982 version that the thing has realised it's got to be more cautious this time round.
      Not defending the 2011 version as the 1982 version is clearly superior. I remember watching it about 12/13 years old I think when it came ITV one night as a premiere (anyone remember Late Night Late?) recording it on VHS ,actually being afraid of something on the telly for the first time ever and then watching it all day on VHS the next day freeze framing where certain shots were just to appreciate how damn awesome it was.

That the 2011 remake actually had practicals only to be replaced with CG because the studio thought it looked too much like one of the most revered scary movies ever only serves to illustrate that the studios have no idea what they're doing. Three words: Disney Live-Action Remakes. (Maybe that's four words...)
      Indie is where it's at.

To clarify your statement, It s not blockbuster directors that suck, or indie directors that are better, it s the blockbuster industry that is rotten and indie industry that is sane. What I said about that attack has nothing to do with modern methods. If you want to make the argument that I criticized computer generated imagery, then you're the one who's wrong.
      I was only saying that it is disrespectful and unfair to put aside the craftsmanship that went into making the practical effects just because it resembles the source material too much.

      @Baxi Tabaxi The VFX artists on this channel said in this very video that the practical effects of the '82 Thing were better than the CGI in the 2011 remake and even talked about how good the discarded practical effects of the 2011 film were. They went on to say that CGI at the end of the day is a high quality "cartoon"
      The best thing would be a balance between practical and digital based on what the two methods are best at, cost effectiveness and what produces the most realistic result. Like real world fire wind, explosions, miniatures, rear projection, stunt work and squibs for blood spurts...models and prosthetics for things that are supposed to be alive and gore etc. The Transformers movies are really good at balancing practical and digital.

Not going all-in on that premise was a total mistake and I think people would have liked it more if they had kept the practical effects for that reason alone.

The filmmakers went into a great lengths to recreate the abandoned research site that we get to visit in the original movie and put a lot of effort into the practical effects too. Then the studio came, plastered CGI over everything and changed the ending too at last the second (hence why it's CGI is pretty bad if you've seen it). 1. All the “gel layer” is KY Jelly. They had buckets and buckets and buckets of KY on hand at all times.
    2. The chemicals used in the neck to make it as stretchy were HIGHLY flammable, and the flames in the frame were an actual flame lit in front of the camera (think of a large flat lighter attached to the camera). They were sincerely concerned that they’d blow up all the whole set and still did that shot.

It's a great travesty that all the hard practical work done for the 2011 version (which you showed) was effectively lost. In all honesty, Carpenter’s The Thing is just completely solid in that it shows you reality. Real blood, real pus, real green bubbles popping out of the neck, real skin ripping (well fake but still it was a real prop being ripped), real slime on the monsters, and it makes everything look real! That was what absolutely terrified me when I was younger. The Thing was my first real horror movie experience and I had nightmares for years about it!!! As I got older, I fell in LOVE with horror movies to experience the raw fear that comes with seeing people mutilated by the unknown and the beautiful little tidbits they would add to the movie that you would sometimes notice and wonder if other people saw what you saw (I.e, when Carpenter would put lights in the eyes of the people who weren’t “infected”). Also, I can’t remember which video it was, but there was a video on UA-cam that reviewed 2011’s The Thing and they made a very good point that I’ll never forget. Lighting was what truly killed the 2011 movie (not just the unrealistic CGI). The video showed that by simply staying with Carpenter’s DARKNESS of his movie, where you couldn’t see every little detail, it allowed for them to make the monsters look a lot more realistic because you couldn’t see any of the imperfections in the work. The video showed a few scenes in the 2011 movie, darkened down to where the CGI was not so “pronounced” and it looked IONS better. It helped to create a “realness factor”, that made the monsters look like they could actually be alive in our world and kill us. Which is what truly scares people. The idea that... could this be real? Could this really happen? That creates my fear. Anyway, I’m not some big reviewer, but that’s why I always enjoyed Carpenter’s version better, even if it was in the 80’s and how they could have made the 2011 version so much better by darkening their CGI so we couldn’t see all of the fakeness. Thank you for haunting my dreams for years The Thing!

      That's exactly what I was thinking when watching this. If you pay attention to the lighting of the 80s movie it's almost always edge lit with a lot in the shadows. Then you see the 2011 version with every CG monsters perfectly evenly lit and it just looks bad and not horrific at all. To me the director and cinematographer are at fault too. I really wish you guys were able to react to music videos. The Chemical Brothers' catalog of music videos are chock full of crazy shots. More specifically "Got to Keep On" and "Wide Open ft. Beck". I was very impressed with these videos. Especially "Wide Open". The whole thing seems so difficult to do, but then there was a scene with a mirror that kinda blew my mind. I highly recommend anyone to watch them and explore their other videos. They're all so different from each other. Every one of them is wild in one way or another.

      Thanks for the recommendations internet stranger. Love the Chemical Brothers and those videos are fantastic. Wide Open is just a beautiful piece of art.

    Don't forget how the music in John Carpenter's The Thing added such a dark foreboding feel to the movie. I still get chills just hearing it.

    At least for Horror movies, Practical Effects is 100% better than CGI Horror movies.

    I'd love to see a cut of the 2011 Thing with the practical effects restored - the team that did the effects tried super hard to match everything that Macready and the team from the 1981 Thing find when they arrive at the Norwegian base - the merged face corpse, the slit throat frozen blood guy in the chair, etc. It was intended to be a true prequel to the 1981 movie. But the CGI made people believe it was supposed to be a remake.

    The O.G thing is my absolute favorite horror movie and my third favorite in general.
    The 2011 remake was cool, but i personally felt cheated. When i found out what the studio did to the fx artists amd their hard work, i realized i wasn't alone.
    2011 was still a great flick and the attention to detail, bridging the gaps from preq to seq, was masterfully done.

    The producers looked at the dummies made for the new Thing remake, and said "but it doesn't look convincing from this angle. It looks all fake", or words to that effect. Missing the point entirely that the director chooses which angles to show the dummies from.

      They also said it looked "too much like something from the 80's" I'm convinced they wanted it to fail at that point.

    Glad to see you love John Carpenter's 'The Thing' as much as we do! It's a practical effects masterpiece! So much so that we're going through and recreating effects from it in our Practical FX tutorial videos!
