The number one reason I know I can trust you is because of the impeccable shirt choice 👌
absolutely :D
@@FellowFilmmaker Yep--first thing I noticed. Between your Phineas and Ferb, and Tom's Aquabats, I believe you two have given me renewed hope in the future. (And I'm a legit card-carrying AARP member with four grandkids.) You made the old man smile today!
happy to hear that! :D
This is so frustrating, and I'm sorry you felt like you needed to speak on this. I think there's a really, REALLY deep disconnect between what UA-camrs (or any professional content creator on any platform) actually have to do to maintain their value in the market -- ESPECIALLY in tech reviews -- and what those creators get for "free."
I got offered a job at a local record shop a few years back because I made a couple videos they liked, and they wanted me to "make videos" one day a week and fill their website orders the other four days a week. I had to respectfully point out that the videos I made that got me in that room in the first place took 30 hours to make, and that's after leveraging industry connections I'd spent a career to build ... and then I politely declined their offer.
People are weird about trust. Nobody wants to have their trust broken, but they don't want to do the bare minimum to understand an industry of reviewers and creators they are supposedly putting so much trust in. These folks really out here thinking UA-camrs put in years (sometimes decades) of work just so they can get a $300 action camera or whatever. That's insane.
Also, FWIW, you already know you're out here doin' your best and kickin' ass. Please don't let these people change you.
I follow your channel regularly for anything new related to filmmaking gear or tips! You keep rocking! 🔥
Awesome! Thank you!
I'm not a filmmaking channel at all and I have gained so much insight from this video about how to grow on this platform from watching this. Thank you so much! I started this as a hobby, recently a couple of my videos hit the 20-40k views and I gained a couple of thousand subscribers however I don't "turn up regularly" as you put it but I've discovered there is an audience out there for my stuff, from next week I plan to release regular and weekly content. I found your page today while looking at reviews of lighting and I have a camera on the way - I think you're perfectly valid in everything you say and as someone who is just starting out and who has ambition for this channel I really appriciate this video. Thanks again!
I'm glad this could help you out!
I was considering talking more around all the things I've learned in growing on the platform and making it balanced and healthy.... think you'd be interested in seeing that sort of thing?
Great video! On a completely separate topic I'd just lke to compliment you how natural you are talking to the camera - 20 minutes anad no edits! Huge props
I remember the time you did an hour+ long stream about it!
nice! :D Thanks for watching this one too
Doofenshmirtz Evil inc. love it. I have been following you for a number of years and as professional documentarian for over fifteen years and an indie filmmaker for over twenty five, I find you to be the most ethical and honest you filmmaker / UA-camr that I follow. I have bought gear that you have reviewed and have never once regretted that purchase. I can not say the same thing about a handful of others. Of course content creators should be paid for what they do. You provide a vital service and I have never thought of you as a "shill"" for anyone. Your integrity is beyond reproach. My channel Is tiny and I really just create videos for myself and anyone who is interested in Doc filmmaking. That takes a lot of work, I could not even imagine doing that full time. You keep being you and we will keep watching and listening. After all you are my "Fellow Filmmaker".
I'm happy to hear that :) Thanks for sharing
also, great to see a fellow p+f fan
You're a refreshing and original voice. I am not worried, do what you need and enjoy yourself.
thanks!
You don't have to justify anything... People will complain anyway. Do your stuff and that's it! 👍
that's fair :D
I loved and learned so much from your product video course on Tomorrow’s Filmmakers! I believe you’re a wonderful, kind-hearted lady with a passion for helping people. Just always remember to hold fast to those good principles like kindness while never losing your foundation, embracing the *beautiful* child of God originally designed and created you to be. ❤
I ve been following your channel for a few years and you always present information in a factual manner. You give us info related to real life situations which is what we need. Great channel and straight answers. I can tell when information is biaised and it is not the case here. Keep up the goiod work. Jean
Literally just watched your livestream about this topic about a day ago, and when it comes to your question... my answer is YES I believe we can trust you. Your down to earth style and passion for what you talk about is what made me want to subscribe and follow your journey. 😊🙏🏻
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing :D
Really good point about purchase bias, Heather. Can you trust a reviewer? I think you can - based on the creator who provides a balanced, honest, and ethical review. Disclosures matter. I trust your reviews!
appreciate the input!
A pragmatic opinion?! in 2024?!?! How dare you! also have to give props for the shirt!
lol :) its an awesome shirt
Just like in reality, my trust in people comes from gut feeling and common sense. In the videographer arena there are a number of prominent channels that have crossed my red line. They push equipment with all kinds of tactics probably without realizing that they are damaging their own reputation. In my opinion it happens because of the competition and mainly because they have disconnected from the real world of people who make a living outside from social networks. In reality, no one needs to buy new software or equipment every two days or two months. This is true for any field, including photography. Honestly, I only watched the first five minutes because for me you're fine and legit, you never crossed the line.
Thank you for talking about it. There is a lot of malice out there and bandwagoning so dont feel disheartened. Keep doing what youre doing and the audience will find your work ❤
:) I appreciate it
In my experience, you have been one of the most reliable and unbiased reviewers on UA-cam. I think that’s one of the reasons I’ve stuck around for so long. Fun fact: I was eating an apple as you were saying you don’t like apples. :b
well thanks!
As a producer myself, I trust more indie and smaller channels like yours because UA-cam isn't your main income and you actually run real world productions to know what really works. Peter Mckinnon makes youtube videos for a living, his success means he doesn't actually get his hand dirty and run things through its paces.
Fair point :)
Great video.
When it comes to " Greedy UA-camrs " YOU are The Absolute Last person / channel / brand that I think about . You create QUALITY
happy to hear that
Thanks for sharing!! ✌
Thanks for watching!
Your shirt is everything ❤❤❤🎉🎉
thank you! :D lol
I wouldn't worry about it; the fact you take the time out to manage the brand's expectations versus your own moral obligations to your audience puts you ahead of a good many reviewers, in my opinion. Paid reviews are a good thing for brands, creators, audiences and dare we say it UA-cam. I am more likely to buy a product you have recommended because I know you have taken the timeout to review it and manage the brand expectations. Perhaps more work needs to be done to help educate audiences on what a paid review means so they can truly appreciate the value of paid / unpaid /gifted review content. Would seem the kind of thing YT could actually help out with and do more to support creators of all Channel Models with
You are reliable because you add worthwhile criticism that can be unflattering to the product…. [I recall the negative video about those low cost pancake lights-ha ha.] The problem with gear reviewers is that favorable bias is implied when you agree to get gear free. Because if you create a bad review after receiving free gear-future gear from that brand for reviews will abruptly end. Brands realize they can use YT creators for very cheap advertising. Hopefully if you agree to a review you have the sincere belief the brand is quality to begin with…. But viewers are becoming more sophisticated and aware of implied bias. Authenticity is becoming much more important…. But viewers sincerely want detailed information on new products-and there are many specialty products out there. I think comparative reviews between competing products are the most helpful, and are the least biased (and you regularly do these-thank you).
Thanks for taking the time to share, I appreciate it
Nothing wrong with your integrity, just keep doing what you are doing... it's great¬
Thank you, I will
Hey, as a film producer-director, cinematographer, and a graduate-level film professor at a major school, I hear you and appreciate your content. Keep up the good work. Don't mind the nonsense out there, and YES, get all the money you can from your content. Producing quality content is not easy and takes a lot of work-sometimes sweat, blood, and tears. As you said, it is a business that can be conducted honestly while being profitable. If the audience wants free access, they should be aware that someone has to pay for it. If they don't like that idea, they should start financing the creators themselves, just like they do when they pay for Netflix, MAX, HULU, etc. I wonder how much pro bono work they have been doing for the community lately?
excellent question :D I think that in my head occasionally lol
Perry the platypus 🤯🙀
😆
I enjoy you and the channel and realize it's a business. If you like it, keep doing it and I will keep watching.
That said I have specific pet peeve that doesn't apply to you. I am a professional photographer and really tired of some UA-camrs (whom I do think are honest enough) pushing low end cameras. Here's an example. A camera meant to fill that roughly $1000 to $1500 price range that "does everything." These cameras are meant to get you into an ecosystem, then get them to buy better lenses and upgrade. They are generally all around cameras that can create greate results, but are crippled in some way that makes using the product much less enjoyable. Here is what I mean. Camera X has a great AF system, but a low resolution, dark viewfinder or poor back screen. Yes, I can get great photos with it with some skill (and maybe better glass), but it really isn't fun, especially if you know the difference. I wish UA-camrs would stop pushing these products to unsuspecting beginners who will either defend their purchase "because they can get great images" or feel disappointed when they realize there is a much more usable camera for literally a small amount more. I always tell people in this space to buy last year's model of the better camera used. I briefly explain to them why, which is obvious- they get a capable camera that is much more enjoyable to use and not crippled in some critical way.
Vendors would hate me if I was a UA-camr for giving that advice.
BTW, I am not against niche cameras that are only good at one specific set of things because they aren't sold like Swiss army knives. Also, I think most UA-camrs I follow (including you) do an excellent job of explaining these types of products.
I like your thoughts and the way you are looking at this angle. I do not see any problem while paid to create any content and give “honest” reviews, providing both pros and cons of the product. Why someone will give his personal time to create a free content? Everyone cannot do only “charity” work. He/she should expect to be rewarded. This is great that there is no subscription fee, if i paid a subscription fee, well then i as a customer can demand things. Any way, i trust you.
Great point :)
good video!
Thanks!
I wouldn't watch you if I could not trust you. BTW, if you are giving away toothpicks I would be thrilled to get one.
good to hear
Uuuhh, YES!
:D thanks!
First ❤ ur work dont worry. Look I will just say this.
I don't care what a creator who reviews things does. Except in the following cases.
(1) When they are bias to a brand in a review instead of having integrity and reviewing fairly (like apple bias reviewers who shun samsung phones, who are so scared of apple blacklisting them to things which fyi apple does, and others do as geraldundone said). And fyi some of these reviewers who are bias aren't even independent they work for big companies like the verge etc
(2) when someone does a review where they hide some cons or drawbacks of a product, and mention small drawbacks to please the company
Now to fair, if a youtuber says: This is a preview, this is a first look then I don't care be bias, please the overlords. But if you put the word review, under any circumstances it better be authentic and through and doesn't hide truths
I consider your reviews as previews, with good cons still. But bot through like "gaffer and gaffer" or "Gerald undone"
But hey that isn't you or your channel so i don't judge u or care or cancel culture u etc
Keep being you, it's fine. Ignore the trolls and the haters
They are just jealous ur successful and amazing and so talented.
Wish you tremendous happiness and success❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing :)
@@FellowFilmmaker I am honored u read my comment and replied. I mean it ur amazing ignore the haters. Wish u more success
Thank you! glad to have you here on the channel
Are youtubers greedy? More like are viewers naive...
Honestly this whole shebacle was really unnecessary. Maybe helpful to the younger audience like kids, but adults should already know the skit.
YT = A lot of effort/time > Doing it is a JOB (hence revenue) > Hence needing regular content/videos and viewers > Hence needing additional funding such as brand payment or sponsorships > Hence a review of the product that is WORTH airtime and in order to keep GOOD relations (for future products/content) there will be some level of professionalism where pros and cons are put eloquently across the viewer.
THE END.
good point :)
Hey Ferb, I know what we are going to do today....
lol, yes!
I do trust you
I appreciate that :D thanks
