1000 BHP is not so outlandish a claim as it seems, I think the media guy misinterpreted Renault as saying that thier Engine had 1000 BHP, but what they probably said was, thier Power Unit has a 1000 BHP. That includes ICE + ERS, and with the ERS providing 160 BHP, the V6 Turbo would only have to be around 840 BHP, which lines up with estimates anyway. It's still a funny interview, but I think it's a bit unfair to meme on them so hard over this.
Like many high-powered drag race cars, they don't actually do the final fine tuning on the dyno. The final fine tuning adjustments are done at the track, so the "I don't know how much power it's really producing in race/qualifying trim" is usually true.

Yes, amazing engine, BUT it was in an era where horsepower figures meant something as that could make the difference. Nowadays, it's not about power, it's about tires and fuel consumption. If you'd put today's tires on those cars, then the 1986 season would see totally different winners and as such history would have went down a whole different path. It's sad that that's the world we live in, but F1 is not about the most powerful engines. As long as Pirelli stays in F1, and we don't get tire rules back like they should, F1 is handicapped.
@@manoahvanderwolf3259 Tyres and fuel have always been an issue in Formula 1 though. The issue for me today is that all the drivers have to do is just sit there and steer. There's no technique anymore, its all controlled by technology. Even in the '80s drivers had to work hard to keep the cars on the track. Tbh, Formula E is a much more exciting format and way closer racing not dominated by just one or two teams.
Um no? That engine only made around 1300-1400 in theory and only did so for around 2 laps 🤣. I’m sick of ppl talking about that shit car like it meant anything. Power is easy to make but power within rules is another story
Not sure. I think they don't know exactly how much it has but surely they have a great guess. I mean, the engine / PU gets tweaked for every track so the numbers may vary.
It actually boils down to the fuel flow limit and the levels of efficiency possible. The current technology and the fuel limit kinda dictates the power you can generate. Sure, if they had some phenomenal reduction of internal friction and all that which noone else has figured out, but it's why the teams are in a reasonable ballpark of each other in that respect. The package as a whole matters so much more than the singular piece
I guess by how many rpm the engine can reach, you mean at what rpm does the peak torque happen, that's called T-N curve characteristic. If the peak torque appears too late, the acceleration might not be linear.
Considering that Daniel qualified and finished in P4 and the fastest lap in SPA, they may be close to that figure and it bods well for the next race at Monza with fewer curves and a more power demanding circuit, Daniel may have a shot at the final step on the podium. I wonder what tattoo he has chosen for Cyril.
I'm no expert but I would guess that any of the engines could produce 1 1000 horsepower if they were set up in a certain way. From what I understand the various engine modes allow them to choose their horsepower in balance with engine life and reliability. If I'm right it doesn't really mean very much to say a certain engine has a fixed horsepower output.
I think its possible for Hot Laps/qualifying - the engines approach 1000 hp output - including full deployment of hybrid power - but you are correct depending on the setting(s) power output changes.
I tune my own engines for street and race. I understand what they are saying. While Dyno tuning has its advantages, it's not critical in racing especially if you are producing dozens of units and selling it to several F1 teams...the No.1 importance is reliability and consistency, given that F1 rules are so precise and limited in scope you will see cars that look similar and engines that output very similar. No. 2 priority is drivability given the kinds of racing and track conditions, and No. 3 is tuning for strategy (hence the different engine codes during the race itself)
horsepower figure is meaningless for an F1 car. Because you measure HP on a Dyno whilst the things that make an F1 car fast is having maximum grip, braking and excellent handling which are all largely governed by downforce and aerodynamics. To have an accurate meaningful comparison of the usable power each car has you would have to go through complex charts of wind tunnel data and tyre comparisons at different temperatures and wetness.
With the constant changing of engine mode and hybrid output I wouldn't be very surprised if the drivers really don't know. It is not like road cars where you can just look it up, or maybe chiptune it and do a dyno and keep it like that.
In the early turbo era f1 cars could almost reach 1400hp with little to no restrictions on usage. Nowadays it’s all a bit of a mess with the regulations etc… not to mention the V6, which I don’t dislike for being a V6 (Ford gt and r35 are amazing cars with them) but just for the sound and way they have to make the power. F1 cars have always been considered pinnacle of racing and +Mega-cars suggesting (like the koenigsegg Agera RS - first road legal production mega car) they’re capable of making at least 1 mega watt of power by having 1 hp for every 1 KG of weight. Which isn’t hard for an f1 to have that power/weight ratio. This means a F1 car should be able to produce at least the same amount of power as it’s weight, which as of 2021 the minimum is 752kg so (752hp), ERS is limited to 163hp for 33.3s per lap. The most powerful f1 engine is ferraris stated at between 1050-1100 HP, which means for a power figure for the highest car the engines themselves for Ferrari would be rated at 1037hp. Obviously no one but them know for sure and even they keep it hush between themselves but that seems like reasonable figure considering all we do know.
2019 Renault: we have 1000hp in our engine and it's almost as good as any engine! 2019 Ferrari: HAHAHA!!! 2020 Ferrari: how do you get 1000hp legally please?
*People start to forget stuff when they talking about horsepower* they thinking about petrol engines... so that means bigger turbo’s/engine block/bigger filters... But formula 1 start to upgrade their cars more powerful by electric modifications, just like their new system KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). It converts brake energy into electric energy (energies battery) en when they start accelerating, the electric energy will convert into mechanical energy (electric to magnetic to mechanical). And a electric motor boost has no physical limit, more electrons (electric current) means a stronger magnetic field, so the rotor will be rotate faster... So, maybe Renault found a better way to use that device better and faster...
Merc paddock engineers dont know exactly because it will vary hugely all the time, they might roughly know, but not exactly. Improvements through the season, one of who knows how many engine mappings, current wear on that power unit, track / air conditions. It’s not not a simple question. I suppose they could say, well it runs at 1000hp for 30 seconds before disintegrating on our dyno back at the shop.
What benefit is it knowing this metric in performance of F1? There are far more variables at play when it comes to sheer performance on a track. All engines are 1.6l turbo hybrid, what is the possible variance in output power? I would think it's a narrow window.
Im assuming they meant 1000bhp from the ice alone? It was already stated in 2015 that Mercedes and Ferrari both had 1100bhp with the ice and mgu-k combined

That includes ICE + ERS, and with the ERS providing 160 BHP, the V6 Turbo would only have to be around 840 BHP, which lines up with estimates anyway. It's still a funny interview, but I think it's a bit unfair to meme on them so hard over this.
I miss these press conferences :(
When the girl you like enters the room...
Like many high-powered drag race cars, they don't actually do the final fine tuning on the dyno. The final fine tuning adjustments are done at the track, so the "I don't know how much power it's really producing in race/qualifying trim" is usually true.
The Way Max Laughed At Valtteri...He Knows He’s Talking Shit, they Both know the Power, Definitely. Lewis is a horrible Liar. Valtteri not so much but he stumbled Since Max Asked straight up. I wonder what they are hiding...
What does it matter if they are lying about what they know. If it’s team confidentiality they don’t have to tell anyone
Misterdogg Channel it doesn’t matter, I never said it did. It’s just funny how Renault Speaks Out But The Mercedes Boys straight up lied instead of denying anything.
If they don’t know they don’t know even if they have less bhp than Renault or even Honda they still have a better car proven on track
@@formulalance8822 i don't think they lied. it's not unheard of that the driver doesn't know anything about the car. Räikkönen never cares, he just drives. and maybe Valtteri asked from an engineer who doesn't know the power, maybe an transmission engineer. maybe some people know the power (Max maybe knew?), but it's not common knowledge?
Max was like "can you tell me".. when bottas seem like he had answers
This is why I like Verstappen he is straight forward not hiding his true thoughts truly wears his heart on his sleeve

1986 Brabham BMW: Hold my beer!
I really thought that Max would say something relative to the past years about the engine, but what he said is even more funnier than I imagined.
The irony now of the awful reliability in the redbull engines and underpowered merc engines isn't lost on me.
😂😂😂
Still both above Alpine in constructors, so...
It never was about the reliability with Renault, so your point is kinda weak. Red Bull definitely has the more powerful Engine.
still scoring higher than renault.

Legend has it that engineer also told Valtteri that the earth is infact flat and he had intercourse with a mermaid near Brighton
Bottas and Hamilton are lying. Drivers love to know all the specs of a car. They just dont want to reveal it.
No way you noticed that mate, you have a 1000iq? It's amazing how you figured that out.
@@andygamer12 If I look at the comment section, it seems there are people with IQ of 1.5, hence I mentioned it.
Not sure. I think they don't know exactly how much it has but surely they have a great guess. I mean, the engine / PU gets tweaked for every track so the numbers may vary.
Boy keep the competition in mind,if they reveal the specs that would mean they just gave away some of their team intelligence
0:42 Lewis thinking about Horsepower
1000hp can easily be made but is it reliable, how much rpm does it make, tq is also important, what does it weight
That's probably why the Renault engines cause so many DNF's the Renault and McLaren the engine worth shit if it isn't reliable
RPM is regulated by FIA
It actually boils down to the fuel flow limit and the levels of efficiency possible. The current technology and the fuel limit kinda dictates the power you can generate. Sure, if they had some phenomenal reduction of internal friction and all that which noone else has figured out, but it's why the teams are in a reasonable ballpark of each other in that respect. The package as a whole matters so much more than the singular piece
I guess by how many rpm the engine can reach, you mean at what rpm does the peak torque happen, that's called T-N curve characteristic. If the peak torque appears too late, the acceleration might not be linear.
Imagine Bottas ending with "They said they don't know how much horsepower but we are pretty sure we have more that 20 BHP"
I didn't know Hamilton was enjoying press conferences that much 0:41 :)
Hahahaha 🤣
I was hoping Valterri was gonna say 'Around 300 .. give or take'
Even if their engine has 1000 BHP, it'll catch fire half way through the race, so no worries.
This comment aged didn't age to well
I'm no expert but I would guess that any of the engines could produce 1 1000 horsepower if they were set up in a certain way.
Cyril Abiteboule- “we have ONE MILLION HORSEPOWER!” (says it like Dr.Evil and puts his pinky to his mouth.)
this was the smartest answer from Max
Like what he says at the Mexican grand prix

@@circourt3250 hey I'm just quoting Max 😂
@@circourt3250 1 race.. still have an awesome bad car..
Why do you think Daniel is running away..
1400 hp with toluene, only in qualifiers, and a half season life.
2019 Renault: we have 1000hp in our engine and it's almost as good as any engine!
2019 Ferrari: HAHAHA!!!
2020 Ferrari: how do you get 1000hp legally please?
More like how you get 800hp legally???
Max Verstappen and RB are complaining about the drivability about the Honda engine. Can’t lie: I enjoy this after their McLaren and Renault bashing.
Exactly

He can hardly keep a straight face... he knows it isn't.
*People start to forget stuff when they talking about horsepower*
they thinking about petrol engines... so that means bigger turbo’s/engine block/bigger filters...
Renault: we have 1000BHP.
Ferrari: thats cute.

Lewis with the joke of the day. Everyone's engines close to each other.
The first thing that drivers ask at the launch event is the engine specs.
This a shame Botta wasn't number one at merc this year, he would be p1
Merc paddock engineers dont know exactly because it will vary hugely all the time, they might roughly know, but not exactly.
Improvements through the season, one of who knows how many engine mappings, current wear on that power unit, track / air conditions.
It’s not not a simple question. I suppose they could say, well it runs at 1000hp for 30 seconds before disintegrating on our dyno back at the shop.
Highly unlikely but 64 laps for 5 races is the reason they aren’t dyno queens. If you can’t make 809hp for 5 races we have a problem.
I love Max’s reaction the most
What benefit is it knowing this metric in performance of F1?
There are far more variables at play when it comes to sheer performance on a track.
All engines are 1.6l turbo hybrid, what is the possible variance in output power? I would think it's a narrow window.
It's all about the full package boys!!. Let's get that 7 lewis. Well done MERCEDES
@Elon Musk The slight sense of arrogance and the strong sense of loyalty, maybe?
Im assuming they meant 1000bhp from the ice alone? It was already stated in 2015 that Mercedes and Ferrari both had 1100bhp with the ice and mgu-k combined
