You read into the visuals what probably most of us did early on as well with the possible references to the bombings, the reference to the monochrome firework in the lyrics ... and the fact Su-metal is a native of Hiroshima.
But then there is the mention of Ragnarok in the lyrics as well - and maybe the tree in the visuals is the tree of life from Norse mythology rather than the tree in Hiroshima (which I was told is actually quite straight and not twisted like this one).
Also the song was released, I think this was right - forgive me if I'm wrong - on the anniversary of the fire bombing of Tokyo which also killed over 100k people.
So rather than being a specific reference to any one event it seems more likely the song is more generally about how awful things can get, but there will come a time that ends and colour will return.
"No matter how long the night
    The morning will arrive"
if you watch the lyrics again the desire to imagine colour gets more ambitious, hopeful or optimistic with each verse:
First verse - "....What colour can we imagine the night sky?"
Second verse - ".... Imagine the night sky in rainbow colours"
Third verse - ".... we will Illuminate the world in rainbow colours"🌈
and of course at the end they leave us with that coloured picture. "Just smile".
There are two more versions of this song and they are different enough that each of them merits and deserves its own reaction.
First you have the piano version on The First Take channel.
Next the live performance at PIA MM arena, BABYMETAL Begins, Clear Night .... that is particularly special.

Great reaction , their was 160 trees that survived the Hiroshima bombing and still thrive today .
The people of Hiroshima started to clear up the damage and rebuild there city almost immediately to what is a beautiful thriving city today .
Although i think the song has a more positive message about overcoming tragic events .

The message of this song is one of "hope," of wanting to Illuminate the world in rainbow colors.
This video reminds me of many things, but what you feel is up to you. But if you think of Hiroshima, the rain falling on this umbrella is called "black rain" and it is radioactive and horrible.
However, what I want you to know is that Hiroshima is a very beautiful and peaceful city today, and the people of Hiroshima should wish to "light up the world with peaceful rainbow colors". The people of Hiroshima welcome people from any country in the world. I feel that SUMETAL, who grew up in such an environment, sings cheerfully, wanting to connect with people of the world in peace.

I got exactly what you did from the visuals of this video, although you were immediately on top of many details that for me only came out in discussions and a bit of research. The tree starting with H you were thinking of was the _Hibakujumoku:_ "a Japanese term for a tree that survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945" (not a single tree or type of tree per se). The Oleander became Hiroshima's official flower due to its vitality. Apart from the visuals of this official video, there's no denying that there's something significant going on with the lyrics when they invoke Ragnarok, the catastrophic ending of the world before it is completely reborn.

It's funny. Most people think of the bombing because of this video and think this is a somber song. Su was confused when she heard this. As she saw this as an uplifting song. I think it's simply beautiful. She sounds beautiful. 🤘🦊🤘

The only uplifting/bright thing in Monochrome is Su’s vocals. The melodies, feel, sound, rhythm, music video, and yes also the lyrics to some extent, are all dark

The lyrics to this song still puzzle me. I didn't even notice it at first, but when some people mentioned the bomb references, it seemed obvious. But then Su (who was born in Hiroshima) mentioned in an interview, that she was surprised at people's interpretation, as it seemed a rather light-hearted song to her. So now I'm totally confused.

    • @kirariniwa3948

The song is undoubtedly a reference to the atomic bombs, what many people misinterpreted, which surprised Suzuka, is that they said that the song is sad, when that is not the purpose of the song at all. Monochrome is a song with the intention of bringing joy and hope to people, if you are going through a difficult time, Monochrome teaches you to have hope that good things will always come back, and even if you see everything without colors, we can always imagine together how Everything would look full of colors, and with that mentality, everything will probably be full of colors in the future, only to begin with we need to desire it. It undoubtedly refers to what happened in Hiroshima, but what dismays Sumetal is that fans see the song as something "depressive" when it is not at all that.
Monochrome is not depressive or sad, it is a light-hearted song. At the end of the video we see everything with beautiful colors :)

great content Zach-Metal, to my knowledge, not one single BABYMETAL song is about just one thing, there is always some ambiguity at play, on purpose to keep us guessing, they can be as deep as Pink Floyd and as heavy as SLAYER, and everything in between. and that's why they are my favorite band of all time. btw, you should checkout Monochrome Live, it's beautiful.

Good history knowledge on your part. About umbrella falling from the sky, I interpreted it as a warning that rain will comes down soon, and that maybe reference to American aircraft literally dropping thousands of leaflet warning civilians to evacuate before bomb dropped.

YT has tightened their rules and are very inconsistent, and they don't care. Does the CR bother you that much? Your knowledge of Hiroshima is excellent.
It is difficult even for Japanese to imagine oleander in that video.
One small detail: the rain after the bomb was not acid rain, but large drops of rain with the consistency of heavy oil, which is radioactive fallout. This rain caused secondary damage. The Japanese people shudder with fear at the mere mention of "black rain.
Babymetal does not give correct answers in most cases. They intentionally leave a lot of ambiguity to allow for a variety of interpretations.
So I will tell you my speculation.
The song seems to be a response to the war between Russia and Ukraine at the time. I think they intentionally wanted to show their anti-war intentions by mixing it with the image of Hiroshima.
They once applied an interpretation of the black rain of Hiroshima to the opening of the song "No Rain, No Rainbow". I was surprised that the love ballad turned out to feel like a requiem. And I believe that the requiem for Hiroshima is once and for all over with that.
And I felt another interpretation in the other version of The 1st Take.
This take was taken just before Momometal joined the band, and it is sung by Su and Moa.
But three mysterious little girls come out just to hold hands.
Then the lyric "The Bright Star" is supposed to be about Yui.
Yui is gone, officially signaling the end of an era when the three of them were good friends.

I really like how you try to understand the meaning behind the video and song. Next you gotta check out two of the best all female Japanese Rock/Metal bands in Band Maid (I suggest Domination live) and Nemophila (I suggest Adabana or OIRAN live).

Great reaction, and kudos on picking up on all these elements! Babymetal always runs with theme of death and rebirth, and they are really good at letting the audience interpret their music individually.
Ultimately I think this song is about hope in the face of a major tragedy. Smile, and look forward to a new day filled with rainbow colors. 🌈
Babymetal has experienced loss as well: Yui’s exit in 2018 due to health (original member of 8 years, she’s like family), and the untimely passing of Kami band’s guitarist Mikio in 2018.
    Live version is best: ua-cam.com/video/2bQo7L7I3_o/v-deo.htmlsi=O3mxUjRa7tsbW3M6
The Clear Night (Apr 2023) performance was symbolic as it’s Momoko’s first as official 3rd member. She’s worked hard as a backup since 2019 to earn that spot left by Yui, and it was a very heartfelt moment when Su and Moa motioned Momo to join them hand in hand, welcoming her into the family 🙏🥹.
    Look forward to more! 🤘🦊🤘🦊
