It’s my philosophy why bullets won’t be replaced by lasers and plasma in the future, cause for the obvious reasons of Lasers needing a huge battery and needing sustained pulses to do any damage, and plasma dissipating once it leaves a barrel making it useless. Most space guns require handwaving to work in scifi thats just how it is. Meanwhile bullets deliver many times the kinetic energy at a fraction of the cost and can be amplified, aka bigger gun, or just do what Terrans do in starcraft and make a railgun machinegun.
Yup if we figure out small but powerful batteries then gauss and rail weapons will become more viable. Mind you lack of rare Earth metals will likely be an issue.

Simply because when the round penetrates it would need to go though the covenant shielding which the wraith has. This would lead to it shattering from just hitting the shield and let's say it gets though. Due to the vehicle being all rounded. Might kill the turret gunner but the driver would still be alive. Shrapnel has less of a penetrating effect. Meanwhile reason why APHE is used in service is because when the round penetrates its going to go though the shield, that explosive filler though is going to basically force the vehicle to implode. Since the explosive mass has no where to go and cannot expand because of the covenant shielding.

dito, that thing is in essence the what if you took a Railgun, and a SRS-99 series sniper rifle and put them together. and it's been canonically used by the most badass Sgt Major. ever.
The Halo 4 Railgun has quite a low muzzle velocity from what I remember. Its really designed as a short to medium range weapon, sort of ranges you'd use an Assault Rifle at. One time when me and a friend were messing around on Forge, I fired the Railgun at a distant cliff on the other side of the map and the round took a good few seconds to hit. It took long enough for me to reload, zoom in and see the round mid air for a couple of seconds. I guess they really dialed up the muzzle velocity for Halo 5, because that Azolai video shows that's got some speed to it.

I like Halo armory designs. It would be cool if you could cover the weapons in Titanfall 2 as well the designs in that game was very cool and I liked their designs and how it felt like in game. The Titanfall 2 armory you could call it.
Probably one of the few weapons Halo 4 introduced that I actually like, to be honest. As for the next Armory vid, I put my vote in for (one of) the many varieties of Shade turret.
Just to get 2 shots off without the sound wave reaching your target justifies the mach 11 velocity. Longer ranges or slower rounds may shift the time for each shot, but at less than 500 yard ranges, the speed of sound gives you very little time for the round to hit, to sight, and then discharge. Obviously at ranges beyond a half mile you've got a reasonable amount of time even with conventional rifles, but unless the round is fast, there isnt any 'walking the shot', much less knowing if your first shot missed before taking the second shot.
I wish they would have included the M90 Mk.1 Shotgun and SAW in Infinite as unlockable weapons that can be upgraded as the power from the Mk.1 would come in handy in dealing with certain bosses and the firepower from the SAW would help a lot from getting swarmed
Best thing I liked in Halo 4 - you can rearm the railgun with those little green supply crates. Sniper's and rockets - power toys basically all you see is all you get - always used to use them, until I found out, you can resupply the rail gun - so it is now my weapon of choice - pick off at a distance, reload, repeat. That little fact changed me from never using it at all, to being the first thing I look for.
I believe theyre using the term recoilless rifle in the classification sense, rather than the literal one. Example, the m1 and m2 bazookas are recoiless rifles by military classification.
Can you do something on ancient human weapons? There may not be enough information for a long video but I would be interested in a short summary of all we know about them and their design.
I think a better example of how strong the rail gun would be is that the 30 mm round from an A-10 warthog has 149,546 foot pounds of energy, meaning the rail gun has about roughly 6.5 times more energy than that. So tbh I don’t think it should have too much trouble with any ground vehicles barring things like scarabs. Granted I know the numbers you came up with aren’t 100% accurate because we don’t have the official data and that covenant nanolaminate is some serious stuff, but the point remains.
There’s literally no reason for the projectile to carry high explosives (I’m not even sure that could work with something moving that fast)… but the rule of cool’s will must be done
I mean there are reasons to have explosive tipped Gauss Shots. Armor penetration followed by internal explosions for Vehicles, bunkerbusting, Orbital Bombardment, Ship to Ship Combat etc. Where a normal Guass shot may not work, nearly a Davy Crockett mini nuke on top of it could do serious damage and very much be useful

You’d use it as a sniper more than anything. But again, we’re playing augmented, 7ft, armored super soldiers, who regularly shoot infantry with guns designed to killing heavy vehicles and aircraft. Forerunner Armor and higher end Covenant armor that can withstand direct plasma and even direct nuclear assault may need a bit of extra punch to get a guaranteed kill on vehicles. Also this is the same Universe where a Handheld Nuke destroying a full ship is possible (for note the smallest EL Nuclear devices were still Jeep mounted 500 Ton yield Davy Crockett that even the warhead is larger than Chiefs torso). Having explosive tipped Guass rounds (also Explosives can arm faster than Mach 11, or just make it a dummy explosion with a RPG styled primer so it doesn't detonate until the nose cap has folded in backwards) again may very well be useful

Nothing that dense (and it would be dense) would be able to be worn by infantry, AND still have the ability to stop a slug moving at hyper velocity. If forerunner armor was that strong, they would have never lost to the flood, and we wouldn’t be able to kill Prometheans without power weapons. A lot of something’s durability in Halo comes down to whether or not it has shields. Covenant ships have strong armor, but Super MACs make it irrelevant. That goes for everything short of a carrier. Hell, the ground cannon at the end of Reach one shot a Battlecruiser because it’s shields were down. And even the smallest of nukes would absolutely be terrifying in space combat

I feel like a better way of calculating the velocity would be to have an estimation of the energy available in the cartridge powering the shot. From that we should be able to calculated a fast can a round of this mass be accelerated by an EM field and with that amount of energy available to power the field. We know the size of the involved battery, and at this point we have a good idea of the battery technologies the unsc uses, so this seems possible to me.
Think of it less as an explosive filler and more as a bursting charge. Humans can survive having a surprisingly large number of holes poked completely through them, as long as none intersect with anything particularly vital, and it can be assumed that the same applies to the larger, more durable Covenant species. Which is to say that through and throughs, as would be expected of a solid slug, are less than ideal for anti-personnel work. Put a small explosive charge in the slug that will fragment it just as it passes through the target's body armor, though, and it will dump the entirety of its kinetic energy into their soft, squishy flesh. Or in simpler terms, it's a hyper velocity hollow point.
1. The recoil from a rail gun pushes out against the rails. 2. You could not fire on more than one person before they heard the sound of the gun because the bullet is super sonic and the would be pretty loud.
I'm disappointed they used the old 'rail guns need a split barrel' trope. Totally unrealistic; it'd wind up looking like Elmer Fudd's shotgun after Buggs stuffs a carrot in it.
@@tristanbackup2536 the problem is, rail guns work by directing a force perpendicular to the projectile (and barrel). That force would be pushing those two booms apart, and it's quite a bit of force. That thing would come apart in your hands, and it's unlikely that would be a pleasant experience.

I'm pretty sure using an explosive round would decrease the actual effectiveness of the weapon. If anything you would want to use a tungsten or depleted uranium hollow point type of round to ensure effective transfer of energy to the target...
They need to give that engineer from Halo 3 ODST this gun. He/She/It/They could probably figure it out. And his old buddy Buck will probably be the first one to test it out. If Buck and the rest of Fire Team Phoenix is still alive

Personally I like the rail guns; especially the ones that fire ultra dense limb exploding ultra hot emping projectiles aka Plasma weapon XD

A recoil less rifle generally means a weapon that has no equipment for the absorption of recoil and not a rifle that has recoil.

1. The recoil from a rail gun pushes out against the rails. 2. You could not fire on more than one person before they heard the sound of the gun because the bullet is super sonic and the would be pretty loud.
Nice take on the rail gun. Think you coud make one of the MA5K? As it was a favoured weapon of unsc special forces.

The railgun is probably my favorite weapon in concept but I’m terrible using it in game 🙃

I'm disappointed they used the old 'rail guns need a split barrel' trope. Totally unrealistic; it'd wind up looking like Elmer Fudd's shotgun after Buggs stuffs a carrot in it.

It's to keep it cool as in lower temperatures.
@@tristanbackup2536 the problem is, rail guns work by directing a force perpendicular to the projectile (and barrel). That force would be pushing those two booms apart, and it's quite a bit of force. That thing would come apart in your hands, and it's unlikely that would be a pleasant experience.

@@tristanbackup2536 the pinch force required to accelerate a 170g projectile to Mach 11 is going to push two unconnected booms apart, regardless of what they're made from, without some sort of tethering.

I'm pretty sure using an explosive round would decrease the actual effectiveness of the weapon.
If anything you would want to use a tungsten or depleted uranium hollow point type of round to ensure effective transfer of energy to the target...

They need to give that engineer from Halo 3 ODST this gun. He/She/It/They could probably figure it out. And his old buddy Buck will probably be the first one to test it out. If Buck and the rest of Fire Team Phoenix is still alive
