Great video!! Thank you! Another thing to keep in mind- this is advice I got from a Police officer- if you're going to spray pepper spray at someone, aim for the chest as the spray will rise and the chest is a bigger target (the head can move out of your way pretty quick), and also take note that on a windy day, it may be useless as the wind may blow the spray back at YOU. Plus in case no one has mentioned this one- hang some Christmas bells ( the smaller marble sized ones) attached to a string on the inside handle of the exterior and/or bedroom door. At least it'll alert you and give you a minute to deal with an intruder. Stay safe- there's no paranoid, just safety.

You will probably scoff at this, but I carry mini witch's bells to hang on the doorknob of my hotel! Some people believe the energy is protective, but more importantly, they make a racket, especially in the still of the night. The last thing a sneak thief wants is to draw attention to him/herself!!

My husband thinks I go too far with my safety security stuff while travelling. I like the door stopper so much better then the door wedge alarm I got to take for the rooms. It makes so much noise lol. I have seen hotel staff cleaning the glasses & cups with the dirty towels & make it look like new glasses & cups. I even take my own sealed tea bags as I find the hotel ones stale. My husband has gotten use to me bringing my teas now. I travel alone and am now old…an easy target. Unfortunately here in the UK we’re not allowed to carry mace or pepper spray…so I’ve improvised. I know I’m technically against the law, but so many people are getting attacked nowadays. I’ve got a hotel door lock, personal alarm, and motion detector light for the hotel bedroom at night. I have my Kipling everyday bag folded flat in my suitcase, and have a phone bag with all my valuables In cross body under my coat or jacket. When I’m away I have 2 phones and two purses. The fake phone and purse are in the main compartment of my bag, easy to get out and pass to a robber if he has a knife which I can’t fight against. The purse has a few pounds and coins, the phone is an obsolete iPhone which is wiped ( no ID on if) My real phone and purse are tucked away in a pocket at the back of my bag. Credit and bank card down my bra…good luck fetching them out of there eh 😂😂 I think we just have to do whatever we can to keep ourselves safe.

@@TheoryofSimple No knives allowed. Nothing that could be deemed an offensive weapon if the attacker got offended at being hurt. It’s madness over here. The victim is in the wrong if they defend themselves. I’m an ex hairdresser and know how hairspray stings if sprayed directly into the eyes, enough to give a good few seconds of an attacker having his eyes closed, so then a kick where no man wants to be kicked, and follow by a kick to the kneecap to push his knee backwards…that will stop him even walking. I was lucky my brother and Dad taught me some self defence. Loreal have a travel hairspray (gold can) which has a shaped top so you can instantly feel which way the nozzle is pointing before you get it out of your pocket or bag. I do carry a sharp camping item with me…of course being old I could have forgotten to put it back in my van 😎 and that would give an attacker a very nasty injury 🫣

My daddy always said, locks are meant for honest people. Have you seen the video where they’ve been able to break a combo lock under 10 minutes? Even the ones voted most secure. I have referred your channel to my sister who travels alone a lot on business. Again another great video. Also beware that some countries in the EU have outlawed pepper spray, like here in Denmark. I will add comments to this as I watch the video. Many people use their own sheet set for travel to use on beds if you are unsure of yucky stuff. I have OCD. When I first go into a room, I put my bags, in the shower, and check for bed bugs. Even in AirB&B. I am always walking purposeful in airports, and such. In Denmark, I carry a fake wallet when I take public transport. It has some Danish Krone, and and some membership cards. I put my real wallet in my zipper compartment.

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  2 роки тому +15

Hi there! Yes the thieves can get into anything so again you’re just trying to layer your protections to make it more difficult so that they’ll move on. The pepper spray is something that you can carry here in the United States but again everyone needs to check where they’re traveling if it’s something they’re allowed to bring. For example on traveling to China you cannot bring anything sharp. I once went to China and I had a slide rule with me and they actually took it. The bedbug issue! That is some thing that completely grosses me out! And that’s the other thing about caring a metal piece of luggage like the one I have is that you have much less chance of any bedbugs getting into that. We have to be so much more cautious these days and I don’t want to give people the impression that traveling is a hassle and not worth it because going and experiencing different things is always fun and enjoyable but you just have to be vigilant.

Putting your bags in the shower is a great idea and not too much. I've had to throw clothing and even a suitcase away after bug infestations. Anything I wear to sleep I wrap in several plastic bags before putting back into my suitcase since I have a delayed 24-48 reaction to bedbug/flea bites. Also I request a room far away from ground floor back entrances since people sometimes sneak in their flea-ridden pets at night.

Excellent video. I am so glad that you decided to do it. I am just like you when it comes to safety nothing is enough but been aware, having the tools and your valuable advises help a lot. I have traveled a lot and these type of precaution have kept me safe and at ease. I double when it comes to copies of documents and have them in different places, just in case one gets stolen I have my back up. Never ever take my passport with me, I always lock in the room safe along with addition cash and jewelry. Just like you, I was travelling by myself in London and as I was taking off my cloths to get into the shower, a man walked into my room! You have no idea how scared I got, he got studded as well because he did not anticipated that I was in the room. This was a very good hotel so is not the quality of the hotel that will expose you to people like this. All I could do was scream and get dress as quick as I could and ran to the front desk and told them and all the front desk said was "it must have been one of the maids (he was a man), getting clean towels to your room...needless to said that I stayed sitting in the lobby room the rest of the evening waiting for the morning when I was to be picked up by my airport ride to get my plane back home. This experience, has never left me, so I carry with me a door stopper with an alarm that I place on the door when I am in the room, if anyone opens that door that alarm goes off and really loud and deters the intruder right away. Thank you again for your great video full of so many tips, advises and knowledge. 💗

I keep a copy of my documents on my Google Drive so that way I have access to it on any of my devices. I also have a copy on an album in my phone. But I like to Google drive because if my phone is stolen I can use my computer or tablet to show my documents and get my information. I’ll keep my passport in the vault that I show in the video and lock it up in my room and I only take it back out when I am leaving.

I am really safety conscious but I do have to weigh up ‘what’s the most likely thing that will happen?’ So with regard to securing your room by putting that wedge in the door to stop someone coming in - I feel the more likely thing to happen is an emergency situation where someone may need to get in to give me medical care or evacuate building in case of fire (or ultimate false alarm and building check needed)

Another thing to watch out for is making sure your pepper spray is fresh. I don't know the lifespan of it but it doesn't last forever. . .years ago i had a pepperspray i carried for a long time giving me confidence .. my daughter kept insisting we spray it to see what it looks like & how far it would spray. I kept telling her no i don't want to waste it. . .finally i gave in, we went outside and i pressed the button ... out came a tiny spray sputtering pfffts about two inches away from the cannister! 😳
She laughed hysterically at my embaressment at all the time i had carried it with false confidence in it.
She got a good laugh at me,

Very good point, Brianna! Much like a fire extinguisher, it doesn’t do you any good to carry around something like that if it doesn’t work. Usually they have an expiration date on them and it’s always good to even do one short spray maybe once every few months just to make sure it works. Wasting one good spray is better than taking it and having no spray left! Also I like to use the gel rather than the spray because if there’s any wind it could blow it into your face and eyes and disable you or as the gel tends to stay in the direction that you’re pointing it.

Great detailed video. By my personal experience you are not paranoid. Decades ago I would put a piece of clear tape across the door as I left, with the Do not disturb sign on the door. Just one small piece at the top, across the door & the door jam. At a conference I was in the shower & my roommate had left for coffee. While she was gone someone came in our room & stole her handbag. We searched the hallway and even looked around the ice machine. The bag was found later under the ice machine by a worker. So if you can only access the floor your staying on with a key fob, who do you think broke in ? I've traveled the world & had similar annoying, persistent, pestering parasites follow me, so yes you just have to get ugly & carry a whistle. You are spot on re 'layers of protection'. A friend in law enforcement said people always want the fool proof way to stop criminals, but for property crime, the goals is ease of entry and exit. They will look for the easiest/less discoverable targets. If they see something that is either difficult to open (even though they can) or takes more time than they have, or is well lit (I almost always left a light on in hotel rooms, but like your alexa idea), they'll find an easier target. And he told me, there are always easier marks to find in tourist/travel areas.

Like I said in the video it’s like if a bear chasing you I just have to be faster than the other person. I just have to be more protective than the other person so that the thieves will move on. I also have to look like I am stronger or more aggressive or confident than other people so I don’t look like a mark and that is some thing that I had to learn the hard way through being attacked in broad daylight at the mall!

Spoiler alert: The zipperless ones may seem good at first glance but there is an almighty flaw with them that make them just as useless....the simple face that they use TSA approved locks. Because of this TSA aspect, there needs to be a universal standard so that the TSA agents can gain access to the luggage. This means 2 master keys opens up every luggage lock put in front of them (the built in one & the ones with the padlocks attached.) You would think that only the agents have this key but you would be wrong. Go to a certain well known auction site & you too can purchase these master keys for a few dollars.
Picture the scenario: You are on holiday, you lock up all your good stuff in the case & head out to do some sightseeing. A rogue member of staff/house-keeper enters your room, whips out their own personal copy of said key(s) & your luggage case is opened in an instant.

I carry a travel size can of hair spray. Many countries outlaw the possession or use of non-lethal self-defense sprays such as mace or pepper spray. I don’t know of any country that outlaws hairspray! It can be disorienting enough for me to make a quick getaway, and also stings if it gets into the eyes. If I find myself in a sketchy area (nighttime, deserted alley, etc.) I keep it in my hand, cap off, ready to use.

Very good video... jam packed with valuable info! Very helpful. I don't travel much anymore but my fall back was always to do my homework before I left for a trip and get to know the place I was to travel to. Try to be very vigilant of my surroundings, listen more that talk when I first get there, and always my rule was to never bring more than I could carry or grab quickly and run with if I had to, especially if I had connecting flights or tight schedules to keep and maybe somebody possibly could distract me. Oh an If I put my contact info on a luggage tag, I always put the info faced down or covered by a flap, and another on the inside of the luggage some where. That was pre fancy apple air thingos... .

One time my family checked into suite and the double door entry locking system was broken but not visibly broken. Someone could easily just push or pull both doors to bust into room. Also, there were signs (perfume odor, wet bathroom, messy towels) someone had just used the shower before we had checked in.

We have to be our own best advocate and hold people accountable for making sure that places are safe and clean. That’s why I like to review things right then to let people know my experience. And I always read the negative reviews first because I find that those are more helpful and if I see a common complaint about something that I know it’s probably something I need to avoid.

Great video! Most of your tips are spot on, however, It is ironic that you carry an Echo Dot and feature it in a security video. These are very easy to hack with a cell phone and readily available software that you can purchase online. Physical security issue? No. But anyone with a few minutes can listen in to everything going on in the immediate area, including plans, schedules, anything spoken out loud. If you truly want to be secure, you have to sacrifice some convenience for security.
I loved that you addressed personal security items, which are often overlooked. Pepper spray would be one of my first choices, however, make sure it is legal to carry at your arrival destination. It is illegal in some countries. One thing that no one will ever bat an eye at is a short (12" to 18") dog leash and a padlock. You can keep them separate in your bag, and when you arrive at your destination, attach the lock to the end of the leash and you have a personal security device that gives you a little 'stand off' room.
Security is not an issue of being 'paranoid'. There are real threats when you travel, both domestic and internationally. Even if you don't realize it, you are very easily identified as a 'tourist' and most make an easy target. Many of these security tips are great detractors, as criminals statistically look for soft targets.
Just for background sake, I am a former Military career soldier and worked for a government agency for 5 years. No secret spy stuff, but lots of security training for semi-permissive environments. I previously owned a training company, where travel security was one of the courses we were known for. Retired now and doing a lot of traveling with the family, always looking to learn something new! Thanks for the great video! I will be sharing it with a few of my acquaintances that travel for work! Thumbs up!

Regarding pepper spray, if you are traveling, carry-on, only, you are not allowed to bring pepper spray. However, you could bring it if you checked your luggage otherwise you have to try and find it at your destination. Would love to have a convo about personal self defense items you recommend for women traveling alone. Thank you so much for your feedback and truly appreciate you giving us those extra hints especially with the experience that you have.💕😊

About pepper spray... it's true that you're not supposed to take it in carry-on luggage. However, I usually only take carry-on luggage, so I don't have the option to put it in a checked bag, and I'm not 100% comfortable without pepper spray. Lots of companies make "lipstick pepper spray" which comes in a metal container like a lipstick or small spray cologne. Many times I've taken it through TSA and other security checks (stadiums, etc.) and so far, it has never been questioned. Of course I also know it might be confiscated at some point.

I take a monocular when I travel they are small, and handy if you can't make a sign in the distance. When I leave a hotel if asked I never tell the staff where I am going next . I am paranoid about someone putting something in my bags. Also when I leave a hotel .for the day, sometimes I pretend to forget something and walk back to the hotel, to see if I am being followed. When I go to the coffee shop, I will get a table where I can see the street and watch if there is anyone out of place, and also take a few random pictures with my cell phone.

I also don’t spread things around in the room; items are in bag except the items I am wearing. In case I have to vacate in a hurry I don’t need to panic. I use a little foldable shopping bag as my dirty clothes bag and then when I need to pack it up in the end I keep all of my dirty clothes together in packing cubes and then put my clean clothes together and packing cubes so that they stay separated and I can just put the clean clothes back when I get home and wash all the dirty stuff.

It seems to me that the flex safe would be a beacon that says, "valuables are here!," and that would incentivize a thief to go for it. Wouldn't it be better to appear as if you have nothing (as in the case of the beach chair)? Or keep valuables on your person or in the hotel room safe? I understand about the extra difficulty, but these days I'd think a thief could easily sashay away with a beach chair and no one would notice.
Even still, thank you for all the great ideas. That door stopper looks like a good one and easy to pack.

Hi Vic, Well I do have an interesting story about the hotel safe that I probably should’ve told in the video which was I locked my stuff in there and I couldn’t get it out and so they sent somebody up to unlock it. This happened to me three times before they found out the safe was broken and that’s when I realize that everybody in the hotel could get into that safe. Also, if you’re staying at an Airbnb they usually don’t have a safe for you to lock your things up. Like I said in the video nothing is impervious, just trying to layer your protections because thieves are opportunist looking for the easy way to get something. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Well, I need to preface this by saying that because I am partnered with the brand, they do respond to me through my email quickly that being said I’ve never had any issues with my luggage that I’ve had to contact them about. I have traveled with their suitcases for a while and they’ve held up and never had anything go wrong, but I have found for Mimmo suitcases do last a while unless they’re really abused.. the thing that breaks the most for me is the handle that’s why the large yellow one that I take as a checked bag is the one I prefer because the handle as wide as the luggage and is more stable and less apt to talking and breaking. I’ve had a few suitcases where the handles have actually broken and then they become kind of useless, but I haven’t had that happen with my Level8 suitcases.😊❤️

Luggage security. Not only for what might be taken out, but also for what might be put in. There're many stories of people, being unaware, who carry drugs across boarders; then their luggage is stolen (sometimes by violent or deadly force) once they're on the other side. God forbid you getting caught. "That's not mine officer". "I don't know how that got in there".
