  • "A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity" is a free-to-view, feature-length documentary that follows a community in Australia who have come together to explore and demonstrate a simpler way to live in response to global crises. Throughout the year the group build tiny houses, plant veggie gardens, practice simple living and permaculture principles, and discover the challenges of living in community. This documentary, our very first!, was shot while we were living on the property for the entire year as part of the community. The documentary includes interviews with David Holmgren, Helena Norberg-Hodge, Nicole Foss, Ted Trainer, Graham Turner, and more.

      I am very glad that you feel better than you did and you are doing some things that you feel nourish you. I understand how the healthcare profession, with it's political game playing about workers hours and wages and top heavy bureaucracies can become such a thankless task after some years. We so easily burn out our best and brightest when they are they are the ones we should be paying to keep. We have lost out because society doesn't really need another novelist but it does desperately need experienced, intuitive senior nurses. Perhaps we should swap the remuneration scale accordingly?

    As a 68year old seeing what you are doing is so inspiring and we are living simply too. We were bought up very poor and saw it as a great benefit and bought our girls up the same way. We have always seen that there is a terrible culture of spending and consuming that’s terribly toxic. Covid is a stepping back and assessment time for the world apart from the terrible reality of inequality in sharing our resources from, us, the wealthy countries…We have elephants dancing in the room that we are not addressing. You are wonderful, more power to you all…♥️

    I think it's an important realisation that we ought not focus too much on the packaging, rather than all strive toward this model, simply recognise we can achieve exactly the same outcome by building communities based upon these principals within the burbs, urban farming, sharing and let go of the concept of competition, individual over collective. We don't need to dismantle the existing in order to refocus, repurpose and recalibrate/adjust our perceptions. While this is an inspirational documentary and I admire their resolve, to all run off in a belief we must abandon what's already around us, we simply don't. We need to change our way of life within the existing infrastructure. Imagine how abundantly adequate our existing road network could be for decades if most vehicles were simply no longer used in the current way. Streetscapes can be repurposed as collective zones for multiple uses. WE need to adjust and an end to debt slavery is imo the key. We also would benefit from demanding less and in that sense this remains intact as a wonderful example. Thinking I must overhaul my life and walk away simply discards the invested energy within that investment, passing it all onto the next sucker is more Ponzi. At some point we either won't or can't continue to work to pay the man and will no longer want the myriad consumer crap that's killing the planet and all entities upon it. The endless investment driven race to the top limits our creativity, too afraid to be judged or diminish based upon perceptions of desirability/resale/values, etc. We very much can do this and it's coming, not nearly soon enough for many if not all.

    This is sadly the truth, but we have to trust in our future, we have the power the change things, it's a question of general awerness.

I believe that raising animals for food can be/ is/ has been done in ways that are regenerative (restore ecological health) and can be incredibly healthy. Yes you do have to kill them, but torture is not a requisite. And, N.S. > Isn't living off of the waste better than creating new and more waste by participating directly?

      Coley Durham greed e.g. is when you have intense and selfish desire for something especially wealth or power. I will hardly call internet, UA-cam or electronic device for greed as this is a great source of information. Mankind has never been this well informed of what's happening in the world in the whole recorded history.

    • @carmenortiz5294
      @carmenortiz5294 7 років тому

      Get real, Coley, there is a thing called solar recharger that work with laptops among other things and Yfi technology is available to people like me. Yes, I pay $84 dollars a month for my Yfi, my land line, no limit long distance and my server which connects the two building in my property and my two computers. But that is MY ONE AND ONLY luxury item. I don't think that is even remotely greed, especially when I can watch documentaries such as this one and learn (or improve) necessary knowledge right here on UA-cam. Your anger issues, make you blind to all the possibilities out there in the internet. I even took a very useful free full course on how to turn my property into a food forest, that can make me almost self-sufficient, in case a global calamity. Use the thing on your head called brain. I bet you waste a lot more on your video games. Plus I get exercise and you don't.

      To wish something better for yourself and your family is not greed. Greed is the assumption that you have a right to squeeze everyone else to achieve your goals. It is that greed that is worshiped by, and poisons, this country.

    Wow...I'd be curious how many people would sign up to live like this for a year?? I know I would in a heart beat! But I think this is the real travesty as 99% of us will not be given the opportunity to experience this way of living. We are all - so controlled, in so many ways, and that's very sad. But yet if we all could sign up, who wanted to, and then be able to experience this way of living...Just how much would that change the world!? I give these people much credit. It takes courage to step off the hamster wheel that is this modern day life and seek a different life. To detoxify yourself from mindless consumption , endless stress, and increasing dissatisfaction with fleeting happiness is difficult. That's why most people are still chasing the dream. We may not all go live in a community like this but we can still begin to free ourselves from destructive behaviors. It just takes courage to make a start and a good plan.

    • @adambazso9207
      @adambazso9207 4 місяці тому

      I think most people don't chase any "dream". They just turn the wheel day-by-day without even thinking about the "why" and "what for". They don't think about it, not for a moment. It becomes an emotionless reflex. That's an office-job for example or 80-90 percent of all jobs available. Our ancestors would tell us not to complain or lament this situation, because we live much more comfortable and easy lifes than they did. Although this part is true, maybe with more free time didn't automatically came more meaning or the feeling of fulfilled-ness.

    I absolutely LOVED this documentary! Me and my toddler are at the point of moving into an even smaller apartment (34m2) but it has a big front and back garden and is in 30 seconds distance to the woods. It would allow me to practice permaculture in the gardens and build a tiny home in the backyard for things like meditation and my son so he can be in his bubble without me disturbing. Living smaller is sooooo rewarding and after this move we will be looking to life more rural within a community. This documentary sparks up so much! And I saw some amazing ideas for the new house and yard, but also loved every word of wisdom shared.

    One of the most refreshing aspects of your experiment is that no one is claiming to have all of the answers or having the only answer. So many communities makes it difficult to get into because you have to agree with EVERYHING in their plan or else. That attitude is not sustainable. Learning to communicate is absolutely vital. Having probationary periods for folks and workshops on communication skills is vital. Too bad we aren't finding many similar to this in the U.S.A. Australia and New Zealand seem to be so much more open to alternative housing and communities. We're evidently a pretty selfish lot here. Being older and dependent on opiates for pain control, I hope to find an answer close to a city here I have medical facilities available for my physical difficulties. Hopefully one is around.

    Hi folks, just finished watching your vid and thanks. I would like to offer a little perspective from someone that has been off grid and building and designing off grid and sustainable shelters for over 15 years. The intentional community model has rarely worked unless people are willing to put a long term commitment into it and have ownership. Homestead communities were usually made up of family that shared in ownership of the land which would be passed down through generations. My own homestead is part of a larger homestead originally owned by my grandfather.
    Your experiment lacked that ownership and commitment from what I see and a family connection is hard to develop with strangers in just a years time. I also seen a lot of contradiction in your lifestyle. No clean energy like solar and wind power and structures not well designed for long term living. Australia has a fairly mild climate and those structures would not be suitable for areas with heavy snow like my area. Your use of grid power for building your structures when you have so much sun struck me as a strong contradiction.
    I would suggest building your community center first with green energy and then allowing people to have ownership of a small parcel for a their own house and garden and a community farm where all contribute and benefit. People need space to pursue their own goals in life, start a business if desired, or be creative while also being part of and contributing to the community goal.
    You are welcome to view my channel for off grid structure ideas: ua-cam.com/users/solarcabin

      solarcabin great comments! In the book, The 5000 Year Leap, it explains that the lack of individual ownership is the reason that British settlers in America in 1600s, failed and were nearly extinct every winter for the first 8 years in Jamestown, Virginia. Once they established ownership of land and resources, the settlement thrived. It was an experiment on socialism, and it failed.

      you raise some valid points, but this does not mean the experiment was without value, not least in the questions is raises, questions which have of course been asked before but for which there is a need for repetition; they have not been fully answered yet and we need to open out our thinking and concepts to find enduring solutions in a way that the approach of "technology will fix it" does not entirely do.

    WOW! Completely blown away! Great job @HappenFilms putting this doc together! We really resonate with this message of communities beating their own drum instead of waiting for the lead of the government to do something. We're more powerful together. I'm a fit and active senior now on my own who has grown up with this simple lifestyle for most of my life. My parents moved from the city to this remote tiny town of a few hundred people to get away from the rat race in the early 1960s. They never needed to financially, but bit by bit became really self-sufficient because of our new surroundings and lack of services. You had to be able to do it yourself and helped others in the community. Everyone seemed to have some kind of skill and there was often bartering going on.
    One tiny store only for minimum groceries so we had a big garden plus we used to forage for natural bounties like mushrooms, wild berries, fish, crab, and game for fun and variety more than necessity. Fruit trees and berries were grown on the properties and I am still enjoying the fruits myself. When this pandemic hit, those in town didn't notice a difference since we were already prepared for anything already. We watched as most of those in the cities had real troubles and little knowledge on how to manage their basic needs. We are isolated and remote, so safer from the outside world and people. We are now being overrun again by those who wish to live as we do in our simple way of life. We are fortunate that there isn't any property for sale and there is a housing shortage to keep people away. I still have the extra family home my parents built and get pestered often to rent or sell it. No thanks. It baffles me that people keep asking although it is obviously not for sale. Small town, so people know who owns what and if a place is unoccupied.
    Learned all about dehydrating, canning, freezing, food preservation, and cooking foods from scratch. My parents tried many things for fun and for variety and both had skills although Dad had a prestigious job that brought us here. He finally retired from working for a company to using his knowledge to be his own boss to work seasonally. He was one of those who could fix or build anything.
    We were fortunate that we easily did without things like TV (no signal in those days). I still do not have a cell phone, but do enjoy the internet for information and entertainment. Did have satellite TV at one time, but gradually weaned off because of the crappy programming. It really is called an idiot box for a reason.
    I keep thinking that this communal living works and more people should group together to work this way. There are always those who know a lot and others will provide more manual labor, but as long as everyone does their bit, it could work. I'm really glad that I can fend for myself and can function by repairing my own equipment and providing for my needs if I need to. I have always preferred being on my own, mostly because I know people can be users if you let them. Fine helping others if only asked occasionally, but there are some who tend to only take rather than give. Glad they don't last long in this area and move on. Now we are left with like-minded people who feel the same and the riffraff has moved on. We mostly all keep to ourselves and do our own thing, but will band together in an emergency. It really is heaven and the way to live. Time to rustle up some breakfast and decide what I FEEL like doing today. Good luck in living your best life too.

I hope one day I can be involved in something like this. I feel hope knowing that people like this, people like me, exist. I'm thrilled to see that this idea is catching on and I pray that it snowballs on this planet. I don't know how to make a connection with a group like this, and wonder if I am too old. However everything I own is in my travel trailer and I am so ready to find my tribe in and live in a self sustaining/ regenerating community like this one. Have dreams... Will travel. My reservation about this film is the attempt to mix oil and water: simple living, tiny homes, and growing your own food are best done individually or by couples or (at most) family groups. Traditionally, tribes grew out of extended family groups, with natural hierarchies arising over generations.
    Trying to form a tribe from a randomly selected group of self-centred individuals who want to do everything democratically is a recipe for festering resentments and constant conflict.
    Since the project allowed bringing in outside help anyway, maybe a much smaller group could have just budgeted for a bit more outside help when necessary.
    The main thing that struck me about the project was that it was just a repeat of the hippie communes of the early seventies. They also hoped to change the world. Where are they now?
    PS I do totally sympathise with the basic premises of the project - I'm just sceptical about the commune aspects of it.

      I realize this is a year old comment, but just a thought to add. These folks were just making due as efficient as possible. To say that they would not have been able to procure the supplies needed to survive without an existing society as a source is not true.
      I certainly do not think that this is any kind of a solution for all problems. But its hard to deny the general sense of well being that returns to you living in this manner.
      I would imagine that in order to get everyone to live this way would cause great suffering. Or would be the natural start from some kind of great suffering.

    • @MelissaBrownapt215
      @MelissaBrownapt215 6 років тому +6

      I partially agree. Have a game plan and a clear purpose. Everyone knows that homesteading is feasible with varied degrees of off grid technology. As a poor person interested in homesteading, I don't stand a chance. And I don't want the discord that comes with complete egalitarianism.
      I just want us to stop exlpoiting resources so agressively and to be rid of plastics and synthetics, except where no other application can work. This told me nothing I already knew.
      Why didn't they build a greenhouse with a solar panel for warmth? Again, no planning, just a hippy documentary. No game PLAN. PLAN. PLAN.
