I'm an industrial design student and I choose this field because I wanted to help people in the creation process of making sustainable products. As I near graduation, I'm realizing good intentions alone are not enough... designers are often not included in the creation process. Businesses try to short cut by hiring only engineers or coders, to develop the product to functional working order and start selling immediately. The rush to be first on the market perspective adds pressure to make more short cuts, only to learn that without doing the full design thinking, businesses actually end up paying more in the long run. This needs to drastically change. We are running out of time to recover from our mistakes, our resources continue to shrink as our population grows. Being conscious of the long term effects of our everyday actions is vital to our survival. We need to incorporate design and systems thinking to everything we do.

I need a structural engineer, a land use engineer, an architect, a drain engineer, etc. What I've found is the architect has a particular kind of wall system and nothing else will do when he hasn't even considered how I want my building to be shaped, or what shape best fits the conditions of the properties that surround my property. Designers need to interview their customers several times before they go off designing something the owner might consider not within their value system. Designs have to be sufficient to pass building engineer city employees, have lawyers lined up if a variance needs to be hired. It's not a simple process of nailing a couple of pieces of wood together or welding a couple of structural steel members together.

I appreciate that they referred to the incident in Bangladesh in which almost 1200 people died when a garments factory collapsed. Social business is the key to success in the 21st century. Unfortunately, not many people realise it.

The problem is too many people believe that a slavery based system is the only way to make things work. The problem is the slave system has been in effect from the early days of what there is registry of a civilization. Capitalism simply changed the style of slavery, instead of directly threatening people and using physical force and deliberate mechanisms to make the slave work, now we have psychological schemes that make people believe that _the right thing to do_ is to be a good slave. One of the basic concepts is to switch the idea of slave-work to "career" and to "be professional". Instead of the physical punishment a lazy or rebel slave would have, now there is the psychological punishment, where the person is regarded as unworthy, valueless, despicable, deplorable, a loser, a waste of space, a self-absorbed parasite, a free loader, an enemy of society, a diseased. A '"jobless" person is not a person. And the VAST MAJORITY of people hold that type of view. Even if an individual is a helpful person, a person that actually does things that would be considered "work" if they were performed under an official contract, but there's no paycheck, the person is viewed as useless. If you simply go about helping people, doing lots of work, but has no official "career" you would be seen as a bump, a drifter, a hippie, but if you have an official job with a monthly paycheck doing NOTHING, you'd be regarded as a productive member of society. Also, in many jobs, the amount of money the person needs in order to be eligible to participate in that kind of work (social position) can be equivalent to the actual pay the person is getting, therefore the person's salary is used only to maintain her as a functional worker (basically, the money they get serves to pay for the lifestyle attached to the job position). That is the very dynamic of slavery. The slave has what is necessary to properly perform their daily functions. I'm not disputing that life quality has greatly improved to most people, and that real slavery with violent punishment was much worse and a horrible thing, but the social dynamics are still prevalent today.

CzechRiot- Very true. I think there's a growing number of people who are aware of the paradigm being pushed onto them, but unfortunately their sphere of influence is out matched by the owners of popular media. The result is that despite our numbers being high, the masses remain overexposed to a prevailing message so simplistic and misfocused that it perfectly indoctrinates us to our bondage to this broken monetary system. A system of control that each decade only seems to become more stratified and unbalanced as it tightens its grip on politics, health, culture and resources. I try and remain positive, but a part of me wondering whether democracy died a long time ago, only to be replaced with an orchestrated puppet show.

CzechRiot True, but even more surprising is that wealth gap between people is greater now than in pharaohs time. Sad, very sad. Like thousands of years of human history never existed, all this years just to get worse economically. So, my college english prof had us watch this for class, and I have to say, I appreciate this doc way more than the first one he handed us, which showed an extreme way of living in an eco-friendly fashion. THIS philosophy and understanding, THIS way of changing things for the better seems far more plausible. This seems like it can actually scale up effectively, and adapt to different geographical climates.
I'm really impressed with this piece, and have looked up each of the businesses featured and plan on looking for similar companies closer to home, because as Eric Henry stated in the video, "Buy better, buy less, buy local".
If you ever need professional voiceover for a project, and you want a young adult, feminine sound, let me know. I'd be interested in working with you.

I'm only about fifteen or so many minutes into this, but I'm digging it thus far. I especially love how it's representing my state, NC, as a state with people who are genuinely concerned about their impact on the world.
Our state has gotten a bad rap in recent news, and it's nice to see something that shows our state's residents in a more accurate light: solid, caring world citizens.

Three years later, here's a harsh reality up until now, universities/ college/ schools/ business schools (most of them) are outdated and dont actually teach you about life, let alone those debts/ loans for paying yourself the knowledge that doesnt pay off.
Profit is essential otherwise youre dead. The essence of business itself is to solve problems by earning profit/ money. But often times we just dont care the process how bad it is just to earn money.
We need to recreate the process where earning profits actually brings positive impact that solve social problems. Thats Social Entrepreneurship, thats who I wanted to be.
You need people to support you and to work together. But the pressure will be there and remain to be challenging until we can change ourselves and our own mental perception.

Our economic values must be expanded to include our impact on our world and the true value of natural resources, in addition, the very serious problem of inflation to the Dollar is what is freaking everyone out! The inability to buy your happiness is becoming farther and farther out of reach for hard working families. Even wealthy people are feeling the pinch, hence the feeling of fear pervades.

I have not seen it yet, but people dont care about the truth or reality as much as they do about entertainment. Dont take me wrong, I love me some tv shows etc. but I also watch even some things from World Economic Forum. Sometimes it feels like bunch of rich white ppl who dont care but many times you can find people who might be trying for some real solutions. But reality show > economic discussion for most ppl.

I'll be as brief as possible:
    1) a) Thank you for the doco - I appreciate the effort
    1) b) Only three segments touch on "Real Value". The rest of the doco focuses on future sustainability and Dan tries towards the end to try and tie it all in but I didn't buy it.
    2) Dan Ariely's segments are great however.
    3) As soon as that seed lady spoke, I fast forwarded it. Contributed nothing to the documentary
    4) I appreciate Dan Ariely and the rest of the people around the USA "trying" to be green. The bio fuels guy was saying he used to travel 27,000 miles a year! Taxi's I don't think travel that much. The fact that he asked his wife to pick up something from the town as opposed to driving is not being green, that's genuine common sense that seems to be not-so-common in the US.
    5) Remember USA, it's not USA., et al. The other developed coutries are already onto your "advancements" in being green.
    6) Your contribution to being green is trumped tremendously by the Asian countries that give less than a f**k about the environment. China and India have 1.2ish billion people per country compared to USA. The rivers of plastic they have going on in the Philippines for example make the toughest people on the planet weep.
There's plenty more points I wanna add but i'll leave with...
    7) The fact you want to make products locally is not an achievement. There is a documentary showing how thousands of workers had no work and their families were lining up at red cross for food hand outs. You take work from Bangladesh or Thailand and they suffer, you take it from locally, citizens suffer. There's no right or wrong.
    Solutions:
    1) Buy second hand. Why recycle it when you can sell it. Give the object a second home. I sold a gaming chair for $100 IF they took another chair I wasn't using. If they didn't want the other chair, I would increase the price of the gaming chair to $950. Sold in 4 minutes as the guy was looking for a chair for his kid and himself.
    2) Common sense: why does it nearly always seem that the US doesn't have much of it. Why would you travel by car when there's a bus stop 300 feet from your house? Do you really need 3x 40 minute showers a day?
    3) Stop buying everything. Nike released a new shoe. WOOOWW! I cannot contain my excitement *Rolls eyes*.

I totally agree on one of the comments made: buy less and good quality. I'm always shocked to see how much cheap clothing people buy only to dispose of it after a few washes. I loved the garden concept the t-shirt printing business had - what they put in they took out.

I used to view companies as "evil" in the sense that all they cared about was making a big profit ( Cough EA ) but watching this has made me come to realize that profit is not an evil thing, profit for companies is just like food for people, without it they starve and go under.
Of course there are companies that do everything they can to maximize their profits without any regard for the effects on everyone around them ( cigarette companies ) but there are companies who wish to do good in the world, But they still have to make a profit, not out of greed but out of necessity. My mind has just been fucking blown by the fact that it took me this long to figure this out!
P.S For a moment I was overwhelmed with joy at figuring this out, This was my eureka moment, but halfway through the door with my pants on my heels about to yell Eureka in the streets I realized that this is a NO FUCKING SHIT SHERLOCK moment. Oh well I grew as a person this day and I´m still proud of myself.
P.P.S Love the music in the background, Soft and soothing ( not sure if that´s redundant, me no speak da English )

If only we could stop governments from giving big multinationals our tax dollars, giving them an unfair advantage. Instead, small business should receive subsidisation as those profits tend to stay in the country and community.

The message here really applies to that scenario as well. Grass roots economics as well as grass roots community politics is the only way those changes you hope for have a fighting chance.

PRICE and VALUE are two entirely different things. Many of us are running behind money to just pay price of things they need to possess or consume. In this process, we've lost sense of VALUE and impact of price-based consumption on environment. I hope that this documentary might enlighten and awaken both consumers & manufacturers and ultimately help us in saving ourselves and earth from unrecoverable destruction.

Trust has to be given to be generated; it requires heart and is universal. Trust requires open and fair negotiation when it is broken; never completely retracted. Trust must be used to serve humanity, not as a power tool. If this is not taught well, by example to all children of communities, relationships in and around community, and families there of, become broken/divided or diluted and self oriented.

For me, this is a pretty amazing and inspiring documentary. I cannot believe that there are SO many people, in this documentary, speaking SO MUCH WISDOM; SO MUCH HUMANENES AND HUMANITY!! HOWEVER!!! I've seen absolutely NO PEOPLE OF COLOR; no African Americans, no Native Americans, no Latinos, no Asians. Progressives have been accused of being just as racist as conservatives. Is that what's going on here? Is our exclusion intentional? I truly don't know. What I DO know is that it is VERY UNFORTUNATE!!!!

    • @Nothingunderground
      @Nothingunderground  7 років тому +1

+neon arroyo This is a fair critique, but we can assure you the exclusion was not intentional. We reached out to a number of people with diverse backgrounds for this film, but many individuals declined to be interviewed. As a no budget film (the Kickstarter failed) the film reflects people who were in the local area that were willing to speak with us that we could afford to get to. We could have just not made the film. Not spent a year of our time and thousands of dollars of our own money on the project. That would have been a lot easier. Is it a flawed film. Certainly. All films are. Do we think the world is a slightly better place because it exists? Yes. Does critiquing people trying to do something, anything good, within their means make the world a better place? Encourage them to make another project? A better project? We doubt it. Might be why this is our only film.

Cos poc hate hard work, don't gaf outside themselves and enjoy all the welfare without the work or care, they claim to be all about they're own communities yet let they're people destroy any self growth or individual sovereign life ever, it's all talk about hating the hand that feeds while claiming to be supreme if its onpy they're own people, yet nowhere and nothing is done to save or prove theyew truthful since they rather continue destroying what can help them to be successful, all while driving any values for anything helpful to their people via poc who do all the right things, they wanna just rage and destroy everything that is done, invested or offered that would end they're sense of pessimistic and selfishness, look at every black ran states, everyone of them is like chop and the black community in each was destroyed and kept Dow by they're own corrupt need to ride free without true values to do anything to create better effort for even they're own races what makes you think they would enjoy true economic socialism in black run communities?? They destroy all they're own chances and let they're own suffer while those leaders steal the investments and use evil movements to destroy with a spread of more destructive angry lies that brainwash not just pic but all colours and now everywhere knows the names of thugs and its all white men to blame, look at the way they do nothing but bite the hand that feeds free government funds while knowingly they're letting they're people suffer in poverty and they, poc running both socially and politically, those people they want paying them to destroy they're own people are they're own, take a look, it's not difficult to see it's not hard, the way it's alllll about keeping free recruits held back kept down n paying all investments off the whites they tear up publucally, pay for THEM to put into communities.. They themselves hate white people but love free money off them though. What penny goes where its needed, on poverty? On poc and invested into schools education and jobs helpujbg communities thrive not struggle to survive in horrible conditions? They rather invest what the white devil gives them to help they're poverished people and been charitable to pay for, trusting they will use it for helping save they're own is stupid they rather pay people to hold they're own back and instead of helping education they focus on CRT and white genocide. They wouldn't work well here. One day that white hand that feeds will dry up and when it does, they gonna know reality... Are the real enemy is actually the same coloured skin that controlled them and forced poverty to remain while keeping true investors Al whites, to fund stupid politics agendas and crappy wasted devaluation of their ethics. Comes not from that shilkaka. Those who take will break when those who today pay tomorrow goes away. Hopefully the next generation will survive to see the enemy of their people was their own races bot capital, CAPITOLISM is what kept them going if they didn't have such corrupt crazy leaders in communities taking all funds and their money was going into places it should of all the time it's been since 70s now, they would be shocked into total in fighting till fatality, wake up think outside and if you do you be actually grateful to whitey and see who really needs to be exiled out of the communities and before they push that white xapitplist hand feeding funds just finally says enough is enough, soon maybe better than later... 🙄

@@Faerie_nuff88 Didn't bother reading your racist diatribe! This was spoken like a true wealth racist or an aspiring wealth racist. You people are predominantly (though most certainly not exclusively) White. You people wield hiring practices, on the job racial harassment, poverty, law enforcement, double standards in the justice system, etc... - to keep (you people think) Black African Americans, Native Americans, and other people of color in our places.
But G-d is on our side and, your father has been defeated. Your father is the father of lies. Your father roams around, as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Your father came to steal, kill and destroy. Your father has been defeated! White racism has been defeated! It has been defeated on a global level! It is our manifest destiny, as Black African Americans, Native Americans, and other people of color - to be on economic par with Whites. In the name of Jesus Christ, it is just a matter of time before this manifests. In the name of Jesus Christ, mark my words, it is just a matter of time!
