- Опубліковано 26 тра 2016
- We're finally getting back to Project Tetanus. This week I'll show you how to pull a front Dana 30 Axle assembly out of an XJ Cherokee. The process is the same for all Comanche pickups as well. This is in preparation for my Rough Country Lift install. That install will be coming in a later video. Thanks for watching!

Just did this on my parts Jeep last week, Great Video!
Thank you. This video was well put together. I'll be checking out more.
Nice work. The unvarnished detail is appreciated.
With the spring compressors, jack up the axle on the side you're doing so that way it pre-compresses the springs, then stick the spring compressors on and lower the jack slowly to put tension onto the compressors, then if you're lucky like me you won't have to tighten the compressors much at all and the spring will fall right out!
Good idea
Thanks Tyler! Good to seeTetanus is getting some attention. ;)
Great info in this vid, thanks!
Can't wait to work on my 89MJ
Really like you videos great information thank you. Keep em comming
could you post a list of tools needed to remove the front axle
Keep up the good work!!! ;)
is there a video on the new axle going in?
Much more patient than I would have been. I would have broke out the flame wrench and had that axle off in about 10 minutes.
You guys should do a video of how to convert a 2wd xj to a 4wd.that would be great.
I would, but I don't have any 2-wheel drive jeeps...
It would be pretty easy if you're at all mechanically inclined. 2WD and 4WD XJs are identical besides the tranny, transfer case, and axle. All the bolt holes are still there
I remember I had to use the MacPherson compressors on my 04 f150. Man was that a pain in the ass, dangerous too because there wasn't enough room for the pin to slide over the spring due to thickness.
I have a 2000 TJ drum brakes all around D30 Front D44 Rear... I want to swap axles to have Disk Brakes all around... What TJ model can I do this with? I want to do a hot swap I dont want to weld anything.
do you have a link to the how to lock the front axle?
Is that two big holes in the front of the oil pan
Just a word of advice... if you want to save the steering connections (pitman arm, for example), loosen the castle nut a fair bit, BUT leave it on, so that when the joint breaks free, it wont fall to the ground; it will 'catch' on the nut.
Good idea!
For the lower control arm mount, just buy an aftermarket one. They are way stronger, and are made to be easy to position and weld
Ya, that's what I'm planning to do. No sense in reinstalling the weak factory mounts.
Hi Tyler, got a question for you, would you know what it takes to swap the rear axel from a 2000 XJ sport to a 98TJ? I know the XJ has leafs on it, but do you think its worth the trouble? to get the 8.25 in the TJ? Or would it be better to just go and get a ford 8.8?
Skl1cent Not worth it. If you're going through the trouble of swapping just go all the way
What I did on mine was put my old steering knuckle on the newer axle
why are holes in the oil pan?
I've got an 87 Comanche Pioneer Metric Ton Dana 44 Trak loc 3.73 towing ratios. Are all the early Dana 30 front axles 27 spline?? And did they ever make a Dana44 front axle that's swappable?? What do we find one on?? Thanks Dandahermit. Totally subbed watching all you Bleepers constantly. Also wanna drop my underslung 44 under the springs. Should net bout 6" lift. Dan aye?
So what are they talking about when they say Dana 30 HEavy Duty?? Dandahermit
any advice on removing lower control arm bolts from the body? I cant even get them to turn with week of pb blasting, torch and big breaker bar. will cutting them off be my only option?
if the "hot" wrench wont take them off, you're probably going to have to cut them...Sorry!
which side do you have the breaker bar on? inside or outside? the nut is on the inside or middle of the vehicle and that is where the breaker bar should be. you need a box wrench for the left/driver side
yeah everyone says the d30 discos are garbage, i would love to have one so i could weld the spiders and you can convert the disconnect to cable actuated. basically a selectable locking front axle for dirt cheap.
Guinelle1 Any write ups on this? Never considered that
Also, another thing; the hubs ARE different between old/new dana 30 axles. I cant remember the cut off, but the hubs are slightly different, so you should grab a set of rotors for the axle being swapped in.
Yes, they were smaller on the old axles. My 92 has the bigger flanges but I'm not sure what year was the cut-off either. Best to grab the discs off the donor axle.
Wow...👍
There appears to be a gigantic hole in your oil pan. Hopefully you're aware of that...
those lower control arm nuts spinning is almost a guarantee... i just made a couple letter P shaped pieces of out of 1/8 plate i believe maybe 14 guage and welded them to the nut assembly and threw a cheater bar onto that while hitting the bolt head with an impact gun.. im sure a regular nut welded would work i dont remember why i didnt do that might have been a reason
Can you use a pickle fork on those pitman arms
I just had to say something. Is that a couple holes in your oil pan?
Yes it is...Good Eye! Go watch the introduction to Project Tetanus and I talk about the holes in the oil pan. That whole motor is going away to make room for the 4.0 out of the 99 wrecked Cherokee. Should be some fun videos come out of that.
i think i remember him saying it had a blown engine when he got it
i was distracted by that also!! :-D
Hi I write from Mexico, I don't know English sorry.. but I need help please ... I have a Comanche truck 1990 2wd and I want swap 4x4.. it's possible do that white parts of a Cherokee zj.
Sure, except maybe for the shift linkage.
BleepinJeep thanks man..... what do you think if I install a Dana 30 front axel And np 231 transfer case, I have a Dana 35 axel rear. And I have one ax15 2wd.. but I don't have the adapter housing for 4x4.. it's possible change ax15 2wd to 4x4?
Does my 1999 XJ have that 3 axle thing?
No, the 99 will have the 1-piece axle already.
Does anyone know if bleepin jeep has a how to replace axle pinion seal video?
I don't remember if Matt did one already, but I have to replace the pinion seal on my dana 44. It won't be really soon but I will be making a video on it.
+Tyler Bleepinjeep thanks really glad these kind of videos exist.
this is the closest I have on that at the 9 minute mark: ua-cam.com/video/R24wh8DNXnc/v-deo.html
Is there holes in your oil pan or do I need glasses ?
yup...big gaping engine-killing holes. That's why this engine is getting replaced. Previous owner killed it :(
Pitman arm = PAIN IN A$$ when you can't get to the top side.
Something I learned from my ZJ.... spray PB blaster on everything the night before.
Thanks but no thanks. I don't internet date. Maybe you should work on your pick-up line.
Will you even run a sway bar
Yes, Tetanus will be a daily driver so I'll need the stability on the road.
+Tyler Bleepinjeep I run no sway bars on my 2000 Cherokee, everyone has their opinion on the subject, and my expireance is the jeep drives smoother, it does sway a bit in tight turns, but other than that it's fine, no death wobble
is it just me or that was a rat sniffing in that body panel hole where he was hanging that caliper lol
I saw that too. Right around 17:18
Hahaha! It's an elm seed caught in a cob web. We get a snow storm blizzard of Chinese elm seeds every spring.
got a lil hole on that oil pan
Ya'll be careful with those coil spring compressors.
I hate them. Feels like winding up a grenade every time I use them.
There a hole in your oil pan😂 just letting you know
i had to stop watching once the spring compressors came out...
Ya, I hate using them. Feels like a time bomb ready to go off in your face.
+Tyler Bleepinjeep i have always just unbolted the uppers while having a Jack hold the axle close to ride height, loosen the lower arms and let the axle down then unbolt and go
