I'm loving the videos, I could tell this was a long one in the making. My favorite thing about your channel is how you explain what the proper way versus what it takes to just make it work. Not everybody has the budget or skill to do a complete 100% rebuilds.
Nice project young man, There is nothing wrong with reusing parts during a rebuild as long as they are still good and with in specs. Many people don't realize it, but when one engines were built in the factory, there are tolerance limits and everything was not always made 100% to an exact size, as long as it was in the tolerance limits it was perfectly fine and got built. I am a of a old timer compared to to you guys so I have probably seen different things over the years than how stuff is done today. Like those Rear Main Crankshaft Seals. Those ones that have the "Ears" on them are the same as pretty much any AMC ENGINE from about the mid 1960s and newer. And regardless of what a lot of people may or may not agree with, I have found personally that those seals are less prone to leaking if they are installed without any sealant, especially Silicone RTV , because it can mess with the bearing clearance. On occasion if I thought I needed sealant on one I would use aviation form a gasket liquid, and apply a very light coat of it .
I can’t argue with you on the lack of quality on replacement lifters. My 95 K2500 5.7 ran 300K quiet as a mouse so when one head cracked I decided to spare no expense and purchased the “best “ parts that money could buy for a complete rebuild. What I have learned is that most liters regardless of brand are coming out of the same Wuhan factories. If I were to do it again I’d put the original lifters back in my engine even though they had 300K miles on them. They were in excellent condition.
my dad used to hill climb race in 80's with a cj5 named SIX PACK. him and a friend took a 4 barrel intake, cut it into 7 pieces then welded back up to fit his inline 6cyl race motor. it was around 300hp. he was 2nd place in the east coast. that jeep was wicked fast out running big blocks but one big block jeep he could never beat. he also ran 112 octane for the jeep.
Hey dex I had issues with cams as well. I ended up buying a reground through Delta cam 50 bucks. They also regrind lifters or sell you new ones. With their grind on them, you won't have any issues with your cam going flat.
I agree 100% with reusing lifters if they aren't damaged. There's a much better chance aftermarket lifters quickly fail. I prefer a stone hone because it will reveal low spots. My Buick factory service manual suggests using an undersize bearing shell to adjust clearance.
Video like this just makes me want to keep my ole' Jeep. My XJ is #151 that rolled off the assembly line in Nov 1984. Got a 2.5L mated to a T4 (not AX4) from the factory. NP207J, AMC 35 rear axle, Dana 30 front axle. When they first started building these things, they just threw whatever parts they had around into em.
I appreciate the hell outta these videos. My jeep I’ve been playing with busted the #2 piston. Tried for a in-frame, quick rebuild and found someone has already done so before me, not so well either. now I know I’m at the point of doing exactly this. Definitely gonna be paying my machinist well 🤣
You may be my new favorite channel. I’ve owned 15:48 my TJ for a little less than a year. Since it has the 4.0, I’m following you closely. One thing I did at my first oil change was to change was to switch to a Motorcraft FL-1A filter. Good idea????
That spring in the oil pump is the High Pressure reg spring. If you want more pressure add a shim washer at the bottom of the spring. Use Rotela oil for cam break in oil it has a good amount of zinc for lifter break in. Most Shell Rotella engine oils, including T6 5W-40 Full Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil, contain approximately 1200 ppm of zinc which will benefit older and high-performance engines.
Great video - sorry for the late comment/question.....new subscriber. I always like to see as much detail as possible but that's just me. Maybe you could do a "one time" video showing some step-by-step and let everyone know it has more detailed information on it. That way the experienced crowd knows what to expect. It looked like you removed the head with the intake still bolted on. As a newbie to Jeeps, I didn't realize that was a possibility. I'm now looking around for or a video with some more information on that. I need to check out possible lifter noises on my 4.0. Many thanks for taking the time to show your work! It really helps us "part timers". 🙂
Hey ive been to your brothers machine shop, and bought a rebuilt 4.0 cherokee head off him a few years ago .got home put the head on my engine and the engine still runs like new .old one had a crack between the valves .i drove over 2 hours to buy it from bg ky .didnt get too stop at ur junkyard .are u still selling parts ? I love my cherokee had it over 12 years now .
Love this type stuff btw man , realtime :) . Ever thought of doing vid on types of steal and maybe how to go from a molten inget piece steal to creating a viking sword hehe
Great video could you do one on like all the symptoms you can get from a head gasket or heater core my heater core clogged and caused pressure in my system and it pushed all the coolant out bypassed the heater core no more issues
i use the telescoping magnet tool that's $3.99 at harbor freight to pull out lifters. same diameter, can push or use magnet to pull. lifetime warranty on the tool as well. ...and yeah, fuck crank bearings. paid the shop that cleaned/honed my long block to do that. /96 ZJ
Have an 01 wj with head gasket and piston slap surprise! What piston do you usually use in your refresh/rebuilds? Don’t need a hot rod just looking to get it moving again. Ps love the videos!
Hey Dex enjoy watching your videos; great content. I'm building a 93 4.0L and after washing the block it has surface rust on the Lifter bore. In this video you mention the same thing, how did you clean the rust off? Thank you in advance and keep making good videos.
I agree, new parts from China have flaws, that's why the video of the nice jeep with rebuilt engines double firing on #1 cylinder could be bad cam lobe 😅
can you make a video about how youd set up a completely fresh beater cherokee? theres one sitting down the street from me thats just begging to hit rev limiter and bounce off trees
Magnet for lifters😂 I did a rebuild and reused my old lifters I took them all apart, cleaned them really good and reinstalled them They are really quiet I ordered aftermarket ones and after checking them out i decided not to use them, they looked cheap (they were melling) i just didnt trust them
i have an 04 grand cherokee wish i had the $ to make it all new but better i like the body style but it kind of narrow though i wanna lower it and put wider wheels on it looking for ideas i wanna black out the wheels w/ baby moons w/ jeep logo?
I run one on LPG (basically propane but with butane mixed in during winter) in the UK. It's perfectly do-able with the right kit but economically it depends totally on fuel prices in your area.
reface the lifters. easy; White grease, you gotta be kidding, never use any grease that is not soluble in engine oil, cant tell what you used but Bob Glidden blew up many Fords using the wrong grease to assemble motors, then he learned, looks like way too much deck clearance but budget pistons would keep that top ring away from the ridge which if touching would be disastrous. That jeep head and piston likes tight deck clearance like .030 put sealer on front head bolt it goes to water
For the love of God, slow down the camera movements. You're good at explaining things, but when it's pointed at you then cut to a part and less than a half second back to you, it's hard to see and process what you're talking about.
Two brothers living the dream working on one of the best most reliable engines made!

Glad you like them! I think that does seperate me voicing my personal opinion instead of what is politically correct.

That storage is like heaven for somebody that blows up engines😂
Thanks for sharing Dex, Always a pleasure sitting down to watch your videos
Thanks for teasing us again with the 5.0L Stroker build.😁👍👍💪
It’s coming. I’m learning too 😬

Same scenario here… same truck too. Parts are junk now

More long videos in the future please. This was a good one.
Always holds my attention. You do a great instructional or brush up vid for us that need it. Thank you👍
Thanks 👍
I wish I had the time and an extra jeep to take out a block and redo it! This looks awesome
My grandfather would use a piece of heavy grit sandpaper and get the perfect crosshatch on his cylinders. Ain't tried it myself

Crocs with socks for the win 😂.
Is that a friends engine room. Or family. You got a awesome property and shop. Those jeeps are a gold mine you got
My brother runs a engine machine shop. It has AC 😎

I ran that stuff on my 97 XJ and it stopped the ticking noise after shutting off the engine.
I recently got the head redone but i also need the block redone, any tips on a short block 5 speed transmission?
When is this jeep getting done?? That thing looks awesome!!! It has factory spare tire holder

The video I’m editing at this moment says maybe one day I’ll do a full uncut of every step of a rebuild 😑 maybe I’ll add it to the list for yall.
Love your rebuilding
Hey ive been to your brothers machine shop, and bought a rebuilt 4.0 cherokee head off him a few years ago .got home put the head on my engine and the engine still runs like new .old one had a crack between the valves .i drove over 2 hours to buy it from bg ky .didnt get too stop at ur junkyard .are u still selling parts ? Sweet. It was actually my head. He just rebuild and sells them. Yeah I’m about to busy for one person but I’m trying.
Man #1 cylinder intake rocker is overpressuerized like I've never seen. That's some crazy oil pressure coming up that push rod.
I’ve seen the oil up drive lock up and strip the gear on the bottom of the drive a few times.
Hey man Just subscribed look forward to watching a lot more of your content keep it up🤟
How much would it cost to get a complete motor that been gone through. Maybe a little hop up. How much do you think it costs me to build a 4.0
This is just a great channel!
Just subscribed after watching a few of your videos. You do a great job documenting your work with a video. When is the follow up video coming out?
Love this type stuff btw man , realtime :) . Ever thought of doing vid on types of steal and maybe how to go from a molten inget piece steal to creating a viking sword hehe

Is your secondary job selling appliances?
Have an 01 wj with head gasket and piston slap surprise! What piston do you usually use in your refresh/rebuilds? Don’t need a hot rod just looking to get it moving again. Ps love the videos!
lol what’s with all the appliances with your blocks?!
I have a 1998 XJ with 240,000 and looking for a new motor. If I bring it out can you do it?
Hey Dex enjoy watching your videos; great content. I'm building a 93 4.0L and after washing the block it has surface rust on the Lifter bore. In this video you mention the same thing, how did you clean the rust off? Thank you in advance and keep making good videos.
Dex, not sure if you know it or not but u are really good at filming
i was scared reading that but thank you much, i feel ive got alot to learn but who knows
I agree, new parts from China have flaws, that's why the video of the nice jeep with rebuilt engines double firing on #1 cylinder could be bad cam lobe 😅
Any substantive difference between the 4.0 and the 4.2? 83 Eagle 4.2 5spd.
Everything is a hammer when you dont give a fuh.
I have a 98 TJ 4.0 with 190k miles. Just a street Jeep. Nothing fancy. Quite a bit of rocker noise. Runs decent. Refresh with new head? Or Stroker?
Looks just like my old 4.6 2v that was overhead to death
can you make a video about how youd set up a completely fresh beater cherokee? theres one sitting down the street from me thats just begging to hit rev limiter and bounce off trees

Hey, what do you get out of the 04WJ crank sensors

Do you sell parts to public looking for a computer for a 98 grand Cherokee
I do but have to buy that new. 96-98 ZJs
Thanks for the reply maybe look you up in future on some other stuff body wise
@@thomasballew7876 I had my computer refreshed. Driver board went out. Now my Voltage Regulator is going bad. You can get the computer refurbished.
Do you sell refreshed blocks?
i have an 04 grand cherokee wish i had the $ to make it all new but better i like the body style but it kind of narrow though i wanna lower it and put wider wheels on it looking for ideas i wanna black out the wheels w/ baby moons w/ jeep logo?
Does the Krylon and Rustoleum hold up on a block as well as the fancier stuff with ceramic, etc?
Any chance you know the thread on 1991 old drain plug bought 2 at parts store both wrong size
AERA HAS A VERY GOOD MANUAL ON ENGINE MACHINING
29:50
Have y’all ever thought of running the trail rigs on propane? Or is it not worth it?
I run one on LPG (basically propane but with butane mixed in during winter) in the UK. It's perfectly do-able with the right kit but economically it depends totally on fuel prices in your area.
Melling makes tools to install pickup screens.
How many miles do you think you’d get out of the motor if it was used as a DD with this type of rebuild style?
I was led to believe the oil guage doesn't do anything cept tell you it has pressure etc? just like a switch on n off . sorta a dummy light to extent
where are you located?
Will you do a full over view of your daily driver WJ?
the blue one ??
Love the content. Being a jeep guy myself. But there's a excessive amount of ads
Is a 4" ball hone the right size? Are they hard to get?
Any American made good new parts?
When you cut the crank , doesnt it take off the hardening material etc ? not sure how really works tho
check out my mint 99 , still has factory undercoating on it , my wifes daily
I've taken apart two 258's nothing that bad.
Hi there, my engine just failed. In your professional opinion should I rebuild it or buy a use one.

Would there be any chance you’d be willing to let me buy some parts from your cherokees and you ship them to me?
hahahahaha nice rebuild man! :D
Pittsburgh pro, lifter removal/ratchet 😂
Will it run?
???
Hey heres what i think, if it was my jeep, i'd 100% go with what you thought was best. 😂🎉
Did u ever get your heat and air fixed ?
Naw I want it fixed. Nobody works anymore.
selling any refurbed motors?
Wasn’t even trying but sold out!!
Starved of oil
Whats your thoughts on a 1991 laredo cherokee near mint ? thats what I have atm . I mean do you like them etc or whats your fav year ? ty

I'm from Wisconsin and would love to come buy a jeep from you sometime for me and my son to build..something clean.
Buy the compressor and I’ll fix your 5 ton for a decent XJ.
Or a good 4.0/ax15 to swap my yj
Just pull another 4.0l.....you have 700 jeeps bud
Buy a lifter removal tool ! their only 30 bucks....
No China!
Loud noises
Just helping your algorithm plus Stephen corral is funny

Four months into UA-cam channel. I’m not a professional
