Only one thing better than a Holmes 750.....that's two Holmes 750s...did a lot of work with an old 750 on the back of a 1976 KW back in the day! Now every job is a ROTATOR JOB!!
I love the fact when you ask your helper for a shovel for yourself that he brought one for himself as well without telling him to help you! that's a good man!
Never had my boss "ask" me do you mind doing this or that. He usually said go do this or go do that... From what I have seen from your videos you are the kind of boss I always wanted to have but didn't. You show respect no matter what the situation is or who you are dealing with be it either employee or customer. Yessir you are the boss I never had...
I agree 100% Johnny. You never see a boss this involved in his own company anymore. From what I have seen he is the nicest man you could meet. This man deserved my subscription.
We still have an old 74 White cabover with an old Holmes split boom not sure what model but we use it on a regular basis to pull stuck farm tractors and equipment everyone around us run those huge tri axle rotator trucks and many of them won't touch stuck farm tractors and equipment because the are usually no place near a road or hard surface and they are afraid to go out in fields with their trucks. We take our old White out where others won't go, we also have and old 5 ton military tank recovery unit for when we get the old White stuck.
Im so glad you posted this video. I have been trying to find one of a 750 in action. I have a 1982 on a Ford L9000. We are cleaning it up and getting it ready for the road. I am originally from Atlanta and Spider Wrecker had a fleet of 750s. My dad always said they were the best. In about 1980, we bought 2 from the Navy in CA, they were on junk International chassis. We drove my 1979 GMC Astro out to get them, it was summer and there was no working AC. We never re-chassised them and I guess he sold them to an operator somewhere. fast forward 10 years and we bought one from the bankruptcy of Eastern Airlines, we re-chassied that one to a GMC Brigadier and ran it all over the southeast. Fast forward to today, at 60 I am on my third career in Aberdeen WA, putting together a heavy truck towing operation with an old 750. the adventure continues. Maybe I should post videos too.
Mr Hal this one reason why I like your channel so much better. The other wrecker channels all have painted chains that look like they’ve never been used, brand new straps and 3/4 million dollar rotators they are scared to get dirty...meanwhile your snatching them out with an old rusty Freightshaker and a piece of rusty floor grate and talking about the old days. If it keeps on raining down here y’all are gonna be mighty busy the next few weeks. Be safe and make that money!
I love those old trucks. My first truck was a Chevy 3500 with a homes 480 on the back, my second truck was a international with a home 750 just like that one. They don't break down like the new trucks all the computers and such. You can pull until something snaps lol.
Great video, I run my whole business with 22 plus year old equipment. So nice to see the older equipment still in use. I think the truck was older than Shane.
love them holmes bodies! i got started by my grandad with a 1946 dodge w5 that was shop built for ideal bread company....... had a flat head 6 and purred like singer sewing machine......

Watching this one really brought back some old memories of my first split boom experience it was a Holmes 600 on a single axle White road tractor we lengthen to fit the wrecker body. I split the booms and picked a full-size car out of a stone wall drain ditch it had flown into. I picked the car up on one side and the front of our small wrecker counter balancing the other side and drove away from the ditch without even a scratch. I really enjoy watching you and your crew you guys are the best and really down to earth crew I’ve found, God Bless you all and stay safe
now thats a real heavy duty old time wrecker have not seen one in Rhode Island in about 15yrs the last time i seen a old holmes was mounted on a mac body cab and chassey pulling out a 18 wheeler out of a snow bank on interstate I-95 during a nasty snow storm thank you for the great video looking forward to the next one as always keep safe and god bless
I like everything about that old holmes but not a fan of the mouse trap brake switch! 750 is on my bucket list of wreckers to own. Awesome truck and video!
used to ride on a rotation wrecker when I was 16 a chevrolet with holmes 500 split boom.. loved how fast you could put it back together and get gone. cut my teeth on recovery then, and in the Army...

At first I thought it was going to be a dead pull. Turned out very good with the stuck truck with the power assist. Nice recovery. Always nice to have someone to help drive the stuck vehicle out that cooperates and doesn’t work against you
Excellent video and great old iron!! Back in the days there were many wrecker manufacturers and Holmes was ' The Cat's Meow ' . You're a very respectful young man!!!
Love watching an old rig still in use. That old 750 is stronger than some of the trucks today if you know how to rig them. My great grandfather had a dump truck from the 1800s. It had solid steel wheels with paddles, no tires. To dump the bed you had a handle crank. Two giant gears between the bed and the cab. You had to crank the handle to raise and lower the bed.
When I started out towing the Holmes split boom was and still is the recovery king. We did a lot of recoveries with our Holmes This brings back a lot of memories
I really enjoyed seeing this I forgot about the old equipment cuz you don't get to see it anymore it's nice seeing that it's being used still take care and have a good day God bless
Another great job with the original rotarer. There were several in my part of the country in the 70s and 80s. Had a propane has truck sink in a gravel road 1 hook on the truck and other swung around tied 2 a tree wrecker was completely off the ground swinging like a hamick walked me right out. Loved the comments about your dad.Mine got a heck of a education some were when I was between 14 and 22 at that time I didn't think he knowed anything.
That was nice sometimes old school works best it keeps you humble hopefully one day you'll be able to restore yours like Jammie Davis is doing. Thanks for the share and hard work never hurt anyone I was turning wrenches with my dad around the age of 7 that knowledge has served me well over the past 46 yrs since I started helping him in the garage

Great to see a Holmes twin boom at work, love to see more of that old truck in action when you can. I’m a real fan of your channel, keep up the great work, thanks Phil
What he’s calling a “landing mat” got its name from a WW2 invention, the Marston Mat, which were invented as a way to build landing strips for military aircraft on soft ground in a matter of hours instead of weeks. The originals were steel mats slightly narrower and twice as long as what’s shown here that were made to interlock to each other and were of a different construction, originals being made of solid steel sheets that had holes punched into them to save weight and aid in them settling on soft ground and ribs stamped in to add stability. Army units found in addition to being good for their intended purpose they also made great traction aids for wheeled vehicles on soft ground, you could lay them out in the nastiest of swampy mud or soft sand and drive trucks, trailers and jeeps right over them. After the war there was such a huge surplus Americans bought them and used them for everything from fencing to walkways to what you see these fellas doing with them. They were so popular the name “landing mat” stuck and is still used today to describe steel mats used for building roads and recovering vehicles over and on soft ground.
Mr JR My father was a farmer and he believed in these. It is amazing how they help vehicles climb out of holes. We appreciate you watching our videos and commenting. Stay safe
Roll off driver here. Here's a good trick to keep in the back of your mind when dealing with a stuck roll off. When the bed is raised, the end of the rails and the tail roller will hit the ground and lift the back of the truck. If you can find something to put on the ground as a base, you can jack up the back of the truck by raising the bed. You can change drive tires without a jack, or in this case, lift the drives out of the hole. When I get stuck I usually do that, and fill the hole in with lumber scraps or masonry scrap. As often as not, I just drive out.
Nice work utilizing the Holmes 750 bed as it was built to do and that's a great idea with the " landing mat " ! Sure made a big difference after you fellers got the wheels cleaned out and ramp shoveled out . Keep up the great work !
That’s old school towing. Worked for a Texaco gas station that was AAA towing and they had a Holmes split boom. Never got to use it but in its day it was the wrecker to have.
Loved seeing old technology working. Definitely deserves a refurb and see it again. Loved the hi-tec brake lock just needs a hole drilled in the brake pad.
Mr. Hal I'm glad you videoed this recovery so people can see the equipment that was the main front line wreckers of the old day's. Several company's still use the 750, 800 and the 1801 as their front line equipment. I still say the 750 was extremly under rated at only 25 Ton. People don't realize having a 750 is just money in the bank. Nice recovery guy's, be safe and always remember your safety is the most important factor on any tow or recovery.
We had a 750 on a 80 Mack. If you've never owned one then you really can't appreciate hydraulics. Then again back then there were only two kinds of wreckers. Holmes and H & M. (home-made) Another fine job.
My friends own a 1.5 ton 1956 GMC with Holmes wrecker that he had modified the wrecker right winch that was at a lower gear to haul in heavier recoveries. Harold Lemay also modified the brakes for air assist for air brake action. It is stored at the family museum at Lemay Family Collection at Marymount just south of Tacoma WA.
Drove Holmes 750 Wrecker for the Boston Fire Department Motor Squad as a Motor Squad Firefighter , great unit . It was mounted on International Harvester Severe Service Chassis .🇺🇸🚒🇺🇸
That was cool - thanks for the video. A local towing outfit here used to have several of those Holmes wreckers, I think back in the late 1970's. They also had a bigger version of the Holmes, or maybe it was another brand, I don't know. It was on an Oshkosh looking truck with 2 steering axles. It might even still be in their yard. With a good operator those Holmes trucks could do some amazing heavy work, plus they weren't so long and huge like modern recovery trucks.
My old man had a bunch of 750s and 600s. I'm only 42 but grew up in businesses and I remember in early 2000s the old man sold a couple wreckers real quick and didn't have replacements but we still had the old 86 W900 with 750 on it and I ran that for a few months and did alot of shit with that old trk that just sat and sat for probly 10 yrs with minimal attention paid to her but when it came time to go, she fired and dragged whatever you wanted. Loaded log trks, loaded tri axles, tractor trailers and on and on. Just a little more work with bumpers and stuff but she did the job. Love to have another cuz I hated when the old man sold that old wrecker. Also like the brake pedal holder haha!! We always cut off a piece of pvc and jam in between bottom of dash but whatever works how bout it. Thanks for the post.
We had a flipper toggle air valve on the back of my 750 Kenworth 1975 coe, it was a duel Function nutral, and air on top of the-spring to push harder on the spring cans slack adjusters s cams, you know if you needed the brakes locked , and the other position would free up the brakes , I use that function way more to move the truck in to position when hooked up with under reach Zack, it was mounted on the drivers side at the bottom of the back of the tow bed, below the two manual winch controls , I had to some times let my booms down to get them to lock back easier, oh yes it all pays the same , loll, nice job 👍 thanks BigAl California.

Mr Jeff thanks for the tip. I have used that trick in a rollback but didn't think about it with a roll off. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Nice work utilizing the Holmes 750 bed as it was built to do and that's a great idea with the " landing mat " !
Sure made a big difference after you fellers got the wheels cleaned out and ramp shoveled out .
Keep up the great work !
Crane and rigging. Thanks and thank you for watching our channel. Stay safe
That’s old school towing. Worked for a Texaco gas station that was AAA towing and they had a Holmes split boom. Never got to use it but in its day it was the wrecker to have.
Mr Flyerbob1 yes sir it was. Thanks for watching and stay safe
good to see the split boom working-- technology has come a long way and spoiled us on this new equipment
bidia1965 yes sir it has
Thanks for watching and stay safe
Loved seeing old technology working. Definitely deserves a refurb and see it again. Loved the hi-tec brake lock just needs a hole drilled in the brake pad.
Mr Phillip that's a good idea. Thanks for watching and stay safe
It looks like an old line wrecker car. Good job👍👍👍
Thanks and thanks for watching. Stay safe
Mr Dan thank you sir. We really appreciate you watching and commenting. Stay safe
Really like your content and channel. I like all the different things you guys do
Mr Aaron I appreciate that. Thanks for watching and stay safe
That old truck would look awesome with a little TLC I hope it happens someday. Good recovery there.
Mr Tom It will. Thanks for watching and stay safe
I was hoping to see that wrecker setting on a stately old Mack. Your dad sounded like a good man.
Mr James he is. Thanks for watching and stay safe
You as well.
I wish I could like this video more than once! Great job, I love your channel. Stay safe out there!
Steel fist We appreciate that. Thanks for watching and stay safe
We had a 750 on a 80 Mack. If you've never owned one then you really can't appreciate hydraulics.
Then again back then there were only two kinds of wreckers. Holmes and H & M. (home-made)
Another fine job.
Mr Chester thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe
I like the simplicity of that wrecker design.
Most motorsport thanks for watching our channel and stay safe
My friends own a 1.5 ton 1956 GMC with Holmes wrecker that he had modified the wrecker right winch that was at a lower gear to haul in heavier recoveries. Harold Lemay also modified the brakes for air assist for air brake action. It is stored at the family museum at Lemay Family Collection at Marymount just south of Tacoma WA.
Mr Colin thanks for watching and stay safe
that old truck is amazing luv it
Mr Leon thanks and thanks for viewing. Stay safe

Good video ,that old Holmes is still a Hoss and those Cat engines run forever if you keep em serviced 👍
Mr Cliff Thanks and thanks for watching. Stay safe
Mr John thanks for watching and stay safe
@@SumterWrecker Thanks. Here's a picture of them showing off 45 years ago. Kind of like Miller does now.

Mr John that is a cool picture. Thanks for sending the link. Stay safe
Mr Kramer That's the same with this old truck. She only runs once in while but always gets it done. Thanks for watching and stay safe
the old Holmes tree !

Mr Al wish I had something like that. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Good job guys I look forward to seeing more videos with your old truck older is always better
Mr Terry thanks and thank you for watching. Stay safe
Now that's old school, brings back the old days in the old field. Everything was chain drive and pens. Like watching old iron.
Mr Dennis thanks and thank you for watching. Stay safe
@@SumterWrecker i would had let the boom down so the cable wouldn't move up while on the tree while pulling
Mr John that was our next option. Thanks for watching and stay safe
