    Wow, this does look old. While the other ships look like passenger ships that also transport cargo, this feels like a cargo ship with a passenger area. Nice video!

      Because it's a cargo oriented passenger ferry, it carries more cargo than pax. This is why it doesn't have much passenger capacity and the amenities aren't that impressive.

    Again and again, I'm so impressed with these old ships, everything looks clean and tidy. The open deck is surprisingly rusty for a Japanese ship though. We foreigners tend to think Japanese is godly on keeping things look like new.
    Also finally we get to see the inside of the trucks/cars loading dock. Been curious how it looks.

      Probably in a few months time this ship will be out of service/retired and sold to foreign shipping lines or shipbreakers for scrapping. I guess it would be the company's decision to just keep the ferry in minimum running condition to serve truckers rather than spend money on renovating the ship's aesthetics for few passengers' luxury since the COVID pandemic have put a strain on passenger income.

    • @kentvesser9484

      I guess a lot of cosmetic maintenance is being postponed as these ferries look so empty that they must be losing money even if the hold is full of trucks.

    As a Navy man, seeing that rust made me want to say something mean. I don't understand why they would let that get that bad. 160 trucks and 62 passenger vehicles explains why they're not concerned about the passengers - that's a LOT of money just hauling vehicles. Very interesting trip, thanks.

    • @dlewis9760
      @dlewis9760 2 роки тому +17

      Most likely as a Navy man, you were detailed to scrape and paint to keep you busy if not doing your official job. My father was in WWII. In the Navy, in the Pacific. His job was island invasion landing craft. That actually took up very little of his time. He spent a lot of the war in tents on islands or in Hawaii. But, when on a ship, his main weapons were a paint scrapper, paint and a brush. A bit expensive to keep it up like that. My guess is every so often, they take this out of service and go to town on painting.

      Nowadays, though, they have sanders that could strip that down in an hour or two, and they could have a base coat on within a total of 3-4 hrs. (Just that first area). What I suspect is that that ship is going to be taken out of service soon, maybe even scrapped. If so, that would explain why they didn't want to invest any time, expense or manpower on maintenance.

    • @robkelly9258
      @robkelly9258 2 роки тому +15

      Yeah to make money you have to be full most of the time, probably why they let its condition slip.... there is no reason to employ staff etc to open a resaurant if there are only like 60 passengers.... the vending machines do that job. Sure maybe 20 of them would like sit down and have a fresh meal etc but then it is not viable to keep a kitchen crew employed on there, a lot of food will be wasted etc.

The NROTC students in the class were wearing a camouflage pattern of blues and greys (I think since abandoned), and the professor asked if any of them knew why those colors were chosen. I love how Oarai has embraced their connection to the anime series Girls und Panzer. I even read that when the movie was premiering they dressed up one of the tower blocks, which was undergoing repairs at the time, with graphic awnings so that it looked like it had been damaged the way it was in the film. I think I also heard somwhere that the old diesel railcars that serve Oarai were due to be replaced by newer trains, but after they appeared in Girls und Panzer people fell in love with them so much that the local railway decided to refurbish and keep them.
    As for the ship, she certainly looks like an old rustbucket, surprisingly poor condition considering she's only 20 years old; that's not exactly new, but there are many ships far older than that still in service. Still, the interior looked alright, if rather dated and tattered in a few places. It may not exactly be first class deluxe travel, but for a reduced ticket cost it wouldn't be bad. And an added bonus for practically having the ship to yourself, no one to disturb you in the bath and such.

    I went on an Alaska cruise on the Oosterdam, and one of my favorite discoveries was the vent from the pastry kitchen It was fun to stand on deck and just smell the baking very early in the morning. And being on that kind of a cruise I wasn't even very hungry.
    I was shocked by all that rust. I suspect they are planning to replace it soon. The Alaska Marine Highway has a ferry still in active service that was built in 1963. It's the closest thing in the USA to the Japanese ferry system, and it's not very close. It's actually run by the state as a substitute for highways. There's not really enough business for a for profit system to work, but it's essential for the state to succeed.

    These old Japanese ferries either get sold to Greece, where they are given a very big refit and are made nice and new again, or they go to Indonesia or the Philippines, where they get even worse. This is clearly a ship that the owner is no longer bothering to maintain because they don't care anymore.

    This one looked like an interesting journey. Really fell in line with what would be in my head for 'The Working Man's Ferry' sort of thing. Somewhere I'd be more likely to run into a long haul driver than anyone else, someone used to long hours of nothing but the road and quick stops for a bite to eat. Thank you for the video, it was a different view of the ferry life.

    Well, there, now you and by extension your viewers know what the car hold area looks like.
    Just based on the path up from the car hold, the ferry looks bare bones as far as interesting things.
    Aomori? Something mountain?
    And, you spent that trip napping about as much as my roommate.

    2:45 i didnt know Baumkuchen is famous in Japan.. Its a traditional German product. Youll find it during christmas times in the stores. Literally translates to "treecake" because it has many many small layers, like the grow rings of a tree

      Baumkuchen is one of the most famous cakes here in Japan. The first baumkuchen in Japan was baked in 1919, by a German confectioner Karl Ueheim.
      Today, in addition to the long-established German brands, you can enjoy Baumkuchen from many of Japan's own specialty stores.

    I would enjoy this ferry more than others I suspect. I would have been all over that ship as much as allowed exploring. Thank you for the video. One more thing, if they can cook for crew they should cook a little extra for passengers. That's the only thing I thought. Dang! Smells so good, can't have it lol

    They probably cooked for the truck drivers and the staff curry. But since the ship is old and no regular passengers, the passenger kitchen stays closed.
