I was like you where I disliked the BRZ/86 because it was slower than the V6 Camry but the soul of the 86 isn’t about straight line performance. The 86 is exactly what people mean when they say “slow car fast” it’s meant to go around a track.
There are plenty of videos on UA-cam where the 86 loses in a straight line but then beats that same car around a track. It’s a platform built to remind people of the original 86 that was cruising through the mountains in Japan.

These are the types of complaints made by people that only know how to drive in a straight line. The entire concept of a lightweight sports car seems to be lost. The mustang is a boat that handles like shit. The elantra is a FWD sedan that is not even moderately similar. The only real competition its the MX5, which the BRZ beats in every measurable way except weight. But factor in the back seats and slightly added function and that makes sense. As an owner of the 22 BRZ I will admit that in normal street driving conditions it feels about average and could use some more power. Put it on a race track (not a straight line, a real race track) and the car will destroy most cars you can think of, even at much higher price tags. I will be adding a supercharger when they are available and for under $40k nothing will touch the car for power\weight ratio.

I figured I couldn't lose with the same chassis and more powerful engine, but honestly it was a step down because of the 300+ pound weight gain. It's an xdrive, so that might be part of the problem - all the extra weight up front in addition to the engine. Yes, it's boring. Great commuter, sticks like glue in the corners, thrilling for the 5 seconds it takes to get to very illegal speeds in a straight. But it just feels heavy ALL the time, and I only average 23mpg (all city) when I drive like a grandma. Less than 200 miles to a tank if I thrash it, but thrashing it isn't fun like it was in the 228i. I had the base brakes on the 228i (no track handling package), and the first time I had to do an emergency stop in the M240 with M brakes, I was appalled at how inferior it was to the 228. I haven't driven a rwd M240, would like to try it - maybe turn-in would be better. There are some things about the BMW that I'll miss, like the seats and steering wheel, which are amazing. Not to mention getting down into the weeds of features like the Mustang not coming with a limited slip diff without the performance package, etc. Totally different cars, it's like wondering why an Elise is so expensive. Whining about it being loud is missing the point, it's easy to add power, very hard to add LIGHTNESS, FFS the even removed the metal from the front inner fenders, instead relying on the plastic fender liners to keep crap out of the engine bay!
Also, anyone that says it would be better with a turbo doesn't drive hard enough. Driving on the edge, an NA (or supercharged) motor is far easier to deal with. Transient lag from a turbo just ruins the car, that's why you see so many people get rid of them after throwing a turbo on them. Some things you will get over the impressive Ecoboost: handling, engagement, manual purity, fun, reliability. The reason it's not totally different from the previous gen (you know the multi car of the year awarded vehicle), is that they really didn't have to address much besides the torque dip and tech. Why doesn't it have a turbo? Because the Supra exists and they don't want this to cost $5k-$10k more. Why get a BRZ when you could get a used Mustang V8? Why get a GT when you could get a used M3. I have ordered this exact car/colour/trans.
All the tests I have seen , totally disagree with your new v old comparison.
In Australia a second hand Mustang is $15k+
and a new one $30k+ over a new BRZ.
    That's the 5.0.
You don't buy a car made in the USA unless it has the V8.
I don't care what the HP figures say, you just don't go there.
As for room, infotainment and all that other BS?
It's a sports car, rear wheel drive, balanced, light and a
design with these pure concepts in mind.
Not a drag car, people mover or front wheel drive "practical" hatchback.
The BRZ is like a healthy, athletic, petite, Japanese super model and
a Mustang is like a Tattooed ,Coke guzzling, donut munching,
overweight American pole dancer with bolt ons.
Now, I know which one I would prefer to drive hard!😉
I have no doubt I will be happy with my choice.

I actually can have a say in this because I've crossed shopped and test drove all these different vehicles.
Last year I was trading in my 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata GT. And I actually drove the BRZ first then the EcoBoost mustang. I think here in Canada the pricing is huge. First is insurance cost, here in BC at least to drive the mustang EcoBoost cost $1000 dollars per year more than the BRZ. Second the lease rates for ford is about 5.49 was their lowest, while the brz offered me 1.9 percent no brainer. Then is the interior, to get around the same price as my brz sport tech model, the mustang doesn't even offer a touch screen, the dials look old, and the stick shift feels really heavy compare to the brz. While I really like the power and the space of the mustang, the brz just feels a lot like my mx5, with more comfortable seats, more room and I did squeeze my friends back in there at a pinch, best part is it can fit in my short garage where the mustang is too big. For me at least when I compared the two cars MSRP the mustang is about $2000 more than the BRZ. But to get it similarly equipped with the 100A package, the insurance, the lease rates, it would've costed me another 8 thousand dollars. Plus the parts for wheels and tires are a lot cheaper on the brz. So no they're not in the same price bracket, the mustang cost a lot more to own over the course of 3 years.

So as an American leaving the world of Ford, wrong. I'm buying a 2022 BRZ after almost 15 years of ford over 3 different models. I want reliability, Ford is really slipping when it comes to quality with constant choices in changing rather than refining. I want nimble quick, gas efficient (compared) over a v8 which is what I'm currently leaving. I've heard nothing but bad things about new Fords. Exact opposite from Subaru currently. They are working with Toyota, and they are still leading name in market resale value and reliably. I'm gonna love this sports car for years and sell it for far more than the Mustang. Not to mention I hear horror stories about Ford warranty and getting them to have time or willingness to fix problems. Again exact opposite from Subaru. And no I live in Colorado my BRZ will have heated seats and I appreciate that fact, your assuming I live in a warmer climate, or that this won't be a daily.

I have a 2009 300c 5.7l eagle hemi I have drove for over 100k and have replaced a lot of the parts myself very easy to work on and very reliable other than 20mpg average. I have also owned a 350z as well which at one point I had the 300c and 350z in my garage which was a great pair to have.
Gas mileage of the rt would be 19-25 but can use 87octane and I drive 90% hwy daily to work...big comfy...v8 noise but what people fail to look at is maintenance cost and consumables, tires, brakes, rotors and with all the weight/torque tires/brakes take a beating.
The brz have reported 27+ mpg on the highway but takes premium fuel only and where I live is +1.00$ on average over 87 but the differential cost is substantially mitigated in mpg/cost vs hemi.
Tires are cheaper and Im sure brakes last a lot longer within reason due too its low weight.
This guy mentioned a mustang...they get well under 20mpg and for 30-35grand your getting one with 30-60k miles already on it. The hemi reliability is proven the 2.4l boxer is questionable. My 300c has almost 200k and minimal repairs needed I wouldnt doubt it wouldnt make it another 50k before engine or trans quits.
Its a toss up honestly for me...Ill have to drive it and see.

One thing that I don't think is fair in this comparison to more up market cars is the value of the brands you are considering. Ford Ecoboost, Hyundai N, and Volkswagen GTI in lowly trims are comparable in price but I wouldn't want to own one of their cars a decade down the line. Toyotas and Subarus are priced at the top of their categories and this is a category no other brand is in. I agree that I'm not interested in a naturally aspirated four cylinder sports car, but the ecoboost mustangs, N vehicles, and performance golfs are competing in line with the upcoming GR Corolla and the WRX not the Subaru BRZ/GR86.

  • @wheeze_86
    @wheeze_86 Рік тому

You completely forgot the mustang is literally half a ton heavier making it about half a second faster in the quarter mile while the brz will smoke it around a corner due to the better handling and lighter weight. You also mentioned the interior was better in the mustang, which I would have to disagree, the brz has 5 cupholders(so you doing have to use the one right behind the shifter), the same size screen, has like 10 buttons on the wheel and dash whereas the mustang has like 30 buttons, making for a much more cluttered look. You said there shouldnt be a turbo, but engineering explained has a great video going over the exact specs and math as to why adding a turbo wouldnt do much. I could see an argument for a supercharger but this car was also meant to be tinkered with; if you have extra money, buy the turbo, otherwise poorer people can still enjoy the car. And if you need so much space why are you shopping for a brand new coupe? Also the automatic mustang doesnt have paddle shifters or a manual mode whereas the brz does. Also noticed you were wrong about the civic having more horsepower, the 2022 si makes 200, which is less than 228. The civic does make more torque, but is slower in both straight line and corners than the brz. Also is a FR sedan. Would have been much better to compare the BRZ to the miata or a nissan Z as those markets directly overlap with the brz. The mustang basically just appeals to straight line speed (0.4s btw) and american brand loyalty compared to the japanese ones and would be a much better comparison to compare the mustang with other american muscle cars.

Most car enthusiasts view this as a true sports car. It sounds like you just concentrate with only straight line performance and larger sized cars. I doubt you push your cars around corners hard often. It's then where you can feel just how fun a small, lightweight, tossable rwd car can be. I've not driven an Ecoboost but a 2019 5.0. it felt numb and heavy pushing through corners.
