KSP: Back to the GENESIS of these SSTOs...

  • In a somewhat spur of the moment event, I decided to visit my roots, and recreate the VERY FIRST SSTO I ever built in KSP, eight years ago in November 2014. I built this using a single screenshot as the reference, and I think the design holds up pretty well! This was definitely a fun mission to carry out :)

    My SSTOs all fall under the category of "Single Stage To Ocean". I could never get the hang of atmospheric aircraft. I was pretty decent at rocketry though. This video inspired me to look at my early KSP screenshots. I realised that Matt was telling the truth about how to git gud at KSP. The words "What was I thinking?!" escaped me more than once.

    To be fair to younger Matt, this SSTO was build in Kerbins ancient geological age known as KSP beta, when Kerbin's atmosphere was way soupier than it is today, and planes had to fight much harder against the sound barrier. A mild case of excessive sea level thrust is a common trait for fossils from this era.

    • @MattLowne
      @MattLowne  Рік тому +29

      In the same vein though, SSTOs were ridiculously easy to build with the intake spam exploit, so I guess it's swings and roundabouts ;D

      While the soup- o -sphere made drag a... drag? It also provided alot more lift, so it was easier to get up into the thin air "on the wing" and make your speed run up high... especially with air hogging exploits

    I personally got into SSTO building quite early, thanks to your videos featuring so many of them! The first SSTO I built was quite special, because after seeing all that examples and guides I wanted to make something that would pop. So what I made was a liquid-fuel-only SSTO to LKO, using Whiplash and NERV engines only! It did require a lot of tweaking and testing, but I think I got it on the day after the day I committed myself to the goal.
    Anyway, this all happened thanks to your videos; I really cannot understate how much your designs inspired me. Thank you.

    The secret to SSTOs that unlocked the door to reusable glory was that you need to fly close to the ocean to build up speed before pulling up to shoot yourself into orbit. I just kept trying to fly into space and failing. I figured it out while messing with a supersonic test plane I built by flying as close as I could to the ocean as fast as I could. I started to go so fast that I needed to pull up to slow down, unless I wanted to burn up. Instead the vehicle ascended like a kite catching a gust of October air and left the atmosphere. Man KSP is fun.

    I've played hundreds of hours of KSP and yet I never really got the hang of the planes. Always found the wing construction a pain in the behind, and hate that you have to use a million pieces if you want to build slightly larger aircraft, which then either disintegrate in the air or are impossible to steer because the available control surfaces are too small. Truly hope KSP2's air/spaceplane system will offer a better experience that allows for more complex designs
