I was habitually late to the console launches. I didn't get the PS1 until early 1997. Soul Blade was the one I snapped up and I was busy with that one for a long time.
Never saw the original Ridge Racer in arcade form, but I remember Ridge Racer 2 being at the mall arcade, announcing its title at regular intervals during the attract mode. What I wouldn’t give to see a Ridge Racer Full Scale, but that will probably never happen. The last one in a public location, at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, was removed back around 2020 or so, and there are none left in the world that are known to be on display for public play.
I may have seen Ridge Racer at the arcades.. it's tough to say, I wasn't really into racing games at the time so I couldn't tell one from another. Now that I look back at them they were awesome!
Oh yes! Like I was saying, racers in the 1990s were really starting to look good and drive even better! The blocky polygon look was dating rather quickly, so Ridge Racer helped steer the genre in a better direction.
Damn the soundtrack is so primo in this game.. those kraftwerk samples coming in, serious stuff

I didn't get that gen. Until 1997 as well with the Sega saturn. My cousin got the ps1 when it first came out and I would always play at his house.
