This is exactly what happened. All the writers are very immature and all their "insights" into human behavior has been mediated through simplistic entertainment tropes that they've mistaken for actual representation of real life.
@@elongatedmanforever1252 Everything I hear about “toxic masculinity” basically boils down to being a plain old insensitive jerkwad, traits that no one associated with masculinity besides the biggest assholes. I wouldnt have much of an issue with it if there was a contrasting “positive masculinity”, but there isn’t, I wonder why that is. The entire concept seems to just be a ginormous strawman against males and manhood.
The writers of this show have such a 2D perspective of the concept of "masculinity", it's actually hilarious. They seem to connect "masculinity" to negative traits like "arrogance", "narcissism", or "meanness" when those are just negative *human* traits that can be applied to both men & women equally. These writers probably think that the concept of "femininity" involves being "weak" or "overtly girly" (wearing make up & frilly dresses, etc.) There are all kinds of masculinity just like there are all kinds of femininity. Like, the wrath of a mother whose child is in danger? That's badass feminity right there. The writers have such a narrow view of both concepts, if you ask me.
So toxic masculinity is generally defined as the things you mentioned. Arrogance due to either overconfidence in ones ability since a "real man can do x on their own" or a "real man doesn't need help". Narcissism isnt too connected with it last i checked and as for meaness again not too connected other then casual sexism but to clarify masculinity in of itself is perfectly fine but there are aspects that can get twisted and become toxic. Granted all of this gender stuff is cultural and ultimately would be arbitrary if it wasnt for the culture. I dont believe any of it has a strong basis in reality
What you describe is called toxic masculinity. It exists and is more common than people think. The problem here is that the writers think that its the only way of being masculine, resulting in this show being completely out of touch with reality and the complexities of being a man.
@@diamondminer5459 You could do that for both genders. Lol Some men suck at writing women, and some women suck at writing men. There's nothing to do with gender. They're just shit at writing

I don't get what was the message they were trying to show here. Blonde dude acts all high around the girl = she has a crush on him. Blonde dudes praises the girl and admits he learned his lesson, showing he's actually a nice dude = girl lost interest.
Literally none of what he said or did indicated learning a lesson. They went out of their way to make him insufferable and stupid and incapable of growing or learning anything. THAT was the message.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it kind of sounds like he's really shallow or maybe even insincere and didn't even really mean it, he just sees girls as people to flirt with and not see them as real people, that's probably why Rose got mad. :p
@@indigowendigo8165 as cliché as he's made to be, at 2:40 he shows a tiny bit of character development, going from an "all talk" dude to someone actually reconizing her abilities, still in his smug way of seeing things, even admitting that he has to grow and learn in some aspects. I thought it was legit a good message, as people can change and be better. Then, just like she ramdonly thought she loved him, the girl doesn't like him anymore, the dude is physically hurt and his growth meant nothing, becoming comical relief that was pushed to the side lines. That was disappointing. Tl;dr: the characters in this show have flutuating emotions that just lead to wasted potential.
Ironically enough, the male characters are far more interesting than the female characters. Their additudes implied that people have high expectations for them but the society that they live in is constantly bringing them down and reminding them of their mistakes and insecurities. Thus putting them on the wrong path or becoming full on villains.
Fr real at least Steven universe gave the villain characters a redemption arch These writers just create mini villains without building on their personalities and behavior to show WHY they are assholes would give us an idea if they are the grinch or judge doom One is a victim of circumstance The other plain in it for the joy of seeing others suffer

This is fucking sad. Blondie sings genuine praises about Rosemary to everyone and everyone hates him for some reason. Also breaking his foot is justified and laughed off cause, he was a little smug before.
All while Sage has been a complete misandrist this whole episode and it's actually brushed off and later used for Snapdragon's personal growth instead of her own. Because, apparently, it's fine for girls to be horrible. But guys deserve a broken foot, even when they're admitting they were being a jerk.
@@MRauTObt He's still basically punished for taking that step forward. Meanwhile, Sage is a sexist ass throughout this entire episode and it's never called out. She even makes Snapdragon cry and it's used for HIS character growth, not hers.
@@MRauTObt He did sound smug, but that's only because not only did Rosemary snap at him completely out of nowhere, but probably because smug is the only way he knows how to talk and is okay to talk. Which actually made his praises by the end seem more genuine, that he spoke it in his own understanding and not immediately a 180 from his initial thinking.
Maybe I'm wrong, but Snapdragon's dad and brother's "toxic masculinity" wasn't all that bad. It seemed more like he wanted his son to be able to stand up for himself moreso than "be a man". It wouldn't be any different than if I had a mom tell me I need to learn how to cook and sew to be self-sufficient and have a sister make fun of me for not knowing how to walk in heels.
Exactly, like, they could have at least been accurate with how toxic masculinity originates and what it truly is. Snapdragon's past didn't really say much about harmful or forced lessons and rather seemed that her dad just wanted to help?? I'm not sure
@@spectralLane Did he already change pronouns? Gonna have to use male since the creators straight up left it ambiguous. But yeah, I agree with the other comment, Snapdragon doesn't even seem trans, he just seems like a guy who just so happens to be feminine and like feminine things. Liking feminine things doesn't equal completely being female.
@@poijnve3912 That's a shame. He could've been great representation of a young boy being comfortable with his own skin. It would've been interesting to see, and instead expand on the already trans character as to why he became trans via learning about Rosemary's mother's past.

Aaster is surprisingly cute, like a himbo with no seriously bad intentions. They were clearly meant to be displaying the stereotypes of a 'bad man' but I'm honestly not annoyed at all, he's like a kid, and he _is_ just a kid, so not only do I find him entertaining but reasonable within his actions. Sure, we still don't know why he's acting like this, (though it's probably through enabling. And you'd think the people around him getting annoyed and faking their friendliness towards him is justified for feeling that, yet surprise surprise, that's actually another form of enabling), but he clearly has no malicious intentions and just wants to impress her. He can get petty, as seen by the end, but if you're suddenly going to snap at me right after you kept willfully agreeing with me, then I'd be confused and petty too. Again, he's just a kid, let him grow as a person and don't punish him physically for trying to learn that lesson.
I honestly found Snap's bully (Cal...?) to be worse but Aster/Astrid was more annoyingly funny, but if neither of them get character development and more seasons come out, then I don't really care either way, their still pretty two-dimensional. :p
From clips and reviews, I've seen he doesn't really seem like as bad a guy as the show makes him out to be. Like yeah, he was kinda cocky and overconfident but he's not evil. Hell, I don't even think he was actively going out of his way to be like that, it's just how he is. Also in a lot of these clips, other than maybe the compass thing and that's kinda pushing it, it almost is like he's looking out for Rosemary or just trying to impress her, that's not inherently a bad thing, a lot of younger kids try to do that when they have a crush on someone. Also in the climbing scene, he actually compliments her basically telling her "good catch" and yeah he calls her "Sprout" or whatever that sounded less derogatory toward her and more of just a nickname cuz she is actually shorter than him. Idk why I'm analyzing this so damn much I don't even watch this fucking show.
Honestly he was giving me Leo vibes tbh. Idk why they tried so hard to make him seem selfish. He did like rosemary though? That’s why he was bragging and boasting. Just like every single Leo guy I met 😂
Honestly, it just looks like Aster was trying too hard to impress a cute girl. Maybe he normally is great at stuff, but he got nervous and tried masking it.
To be fair, while she was still going gaga over him, she actually agreed with him that her name was Rhubarb, so "Are you sure?" makes sense in context.
@@Troublethecat but taken out of context it looks like it was written by someone who's terribly sleep deprived and desperately needs to show that a character is mean but they suck at writing dialogues
What if Snapdragon was more “””feminine””” while still being male? I feel like that’s a better message, showing that there are many different flavors of gender expression…
The problem is that the creators clearly didn't give a #$#@$ about anything but saying that "transgenders are cool and EVERYONE should be one!" Notice that the ONLY "good" males just happen to ALL be "trans"....as if the say anyone wanting to be male or keep their testies is INHERENTLY toxic and HOPELESSLY evil. The writing team seemed determined to railroad Snapdragon. And in twitter they confirmed he would transition in season 2...because there can be NOT good guys in this series. NONE.
If you want a good female protagonist, don't make it that the men are less powerfull than her, make strong opposition. Opposition that would make her train to be stronger.
That's what I didn't like about Captain Marvel. There's nothing wrong with a protagonist being strong, but if they're stronger than all the antagonists, then there's no sense of tension or conflict.
all this advise is true but missing a critical element. The show was written by a staff who consider "diversity" to be "all (white) women in the writer's room" (the creator himself doesn't count or is considered a woman...and never corrected his staff on that commercial.....go figure). Their take on "good female protagonists" is FAR different from the norm or any standard you care to use. They played by their own rules and gave zero #$@#$ what anyone else would think, instead determined to silence all criticism by screaming "misogyny!"
I honestly don't think it's that deep. He's just pretty, blonde and blue eyed and happens to be an asshole. There are other white males in the show who aren't caricatures.
@@suitnuggerat1123 Literally any man that isn't portrayed as gay, beta, femboy, trans, or colored is treated like a bigot, and idiot, or a sleaze. And that was definitely the intentions of the writers.
@@JWeb66 That's not true. Cal is dark-skinned and an asshole, Slime Boy is white and a good guy. (and I don't care what Kate Leth said on twitter shut up!)
Bro do you even know what the people who work on this show look like? They definitely never gotten male attention in their lives Buncha whales with neon hair lmao

1:54 - Actually, there _is_ a condition where your heart could be at the right side. And I'm a little surprised he didn't know since from the adrenaline, wouldn't he sense the intensity of his heart beats from his left side? Seems to me he's actually telling the truth and sensed that his heart beat was from the right as he might've had the condition, and assumed the heart must be at the right lol
Honestly... Aster's not the biggest misogynist, he's just prideful. He says "nice looking out" when Rosemary helps him. He has a lot of pride as shown in the swinging axe scene, but Parnell (shown as a good male character) jumped off into the misty void as well (though this was done as a "my life sucks" joke I think...) He keeps calling her Rhubarb because she didn't bother correcting her (due to infatuation) until she was at her wits end and then she angrily corrects him saying her name's Rosemary. I'm an angry girl too, so I might've been frustrated too, but the frustration is more in myself for not correcting him. But yeah being angry at people who don't deserve it isn't good. He undermines Rosemary, but I see that more as "I'm a prideful and strong guy who has to prove his worth to cute girls" instead of "I'm a misogynistic asshole who thinks women can't do things". Given I didn't see the whole scene, but from my perspective, Aster's end where he's impressed with Rosemary, then Rosemary implies she doesn't want to hang out with him anymore, then him calling her stuck up comes out of nowhere. If they wanted him to be a toxic male, they should've had him ask her our and her say no then have him throw a tantrum or something. I know it's a magical show, but that doesn't mean "Write the people characters as stupidly as possible". There's too many leaps of logic.
No, the better way of making him an asshole, is asking her out, she says yes and he ghosts her for another. That would make more sense. The first one you suggested should be used on a guy she DOESN'T find attractive, for that happens more often than not.
High guardian spice is breaking barriers by having the only implied trans women character beat the shit out of someone for making them feel insecure. Truly ground breaking and defying stereotypes A+ 10/10

Snapdragon overreacted. Just make clever retorts, like -Huh. Seems like you can't stop thinking about the sight of me. -What? Upset your your little mermaid wifey was just pretend? -You didn't seem to hate it at first. What was that lame pickup line you used? -I'm sure you'll get along with the mermaids, too. How many do you plan on proposing to? -Me, a girl? Ha, you wish. Edit: Imagining a back and forth argument instead of what happened, I can picture that episode focusing on them as a side story. They are distracted arguing and get separated from the group. Classic "enemies turned to bros" trope begins, and by the end of the episode they actually understand each other. Given their different personalities, they could balance each other out nicely and assist in character growth. Edit 2: Heck, why not bring Aster into this? After Aster gets his foot crushed while everyone laughs, Snap could intervene and help Aster with his foot, since he challenged Sage's misandry in that episode. That could show that part of what sets Snapdragon apart is his empathy, which could get Sage thinking about how she might've been wrong about men. Amaryllis, being Snapdragon's friend, would probably dial down her bullying of Aster, and Aster would become their himbo friend. Aster's reaction towards Snap in the mermaid costume would be a foil to Cal's after Amaryllis drives him away: Aster could mistake Snapdragon for a girl, but then when he realizes it's actually Snapdragon he could laugh it off and tell him he looks way too good in that costume. Then he could walk off with some other people, maybe with his parting words being something like telling Snap to introduce his sister, if he has one. This would still make Snap insecure, but Amaryllis could point out it was a compliment and use it to prove Cal was just a weirdo for reacting the way he did. That would give Amaryllis a reason to stop worrying about Snap's insecurity bc she would think it was all patched up now. THEN would come the "let's go smash stuff until you feel better" line.
I think one of the most important lessons any kid can learn growing up is how to clap back in a given situation. Snapdragon was never taught this valuable life lesson💀
Some thoughts: 0:01 That perspective though. That's awful. I love how teachers in HGA just assign inexperienced kids dangerous tasks without any actual assistance or guidance, therefore perpetually endangering them but teaching them nothing. How do you use a compass to solve a maze? Pretty sure that's not how mazes work. Astor basically admits he judged Rosemary on her looks and learned to try to do better THEN gets punished by Parsley and the teacher. How dare he learn his lesson on his own! Speaking of Parsley - she threw her hammer behind her and it landed on Astor's foot. Astor. Who is standing next to her. Also, gotta love how Rosemary - who is a total meathead normally - becomes super competent just for this episode. 3:31 That flame is dangerously close to that web decoration and we later learn they have to rely on firefighters to put out fires at this MAGICAL SCHOOL. 4:13 The ring just vanishes. They could have had him drop it in surprise, but that would take effort. Why are Snapdragon's pupils white? (I know I know "Oh my God! You can't just ask someone why their pupils are white!") I love how Sage's hat keeps changing size between frames. "Your wrist is broken" How do you know just by looking at it from several feet away?????
@@rashan141 What's worse is that Sage acts completely sexist throughout this same episode, and it's never addressed. She pretty much says she hates men - and no one seems to care. And she tells Snapdragon that girl friendships are closer by default than guy friendships and, instead of her learning that she's wrong and growing as a character, her speech is used for Snapdragon's character growth regarding his questioning his gender identity. This whole episode has a "girls are all automatically right" overtone that just doesn't sit right with me.

Aster is so weirdly written the more I think of him. He's clearly one of those "over confident himbo wannabe ladies man" types of characters as written by a misandrist, but he never really acts in a way that justifies the amount of hostility the others show him at the end of the episode. He definitely didn't do anything to deserve Parsley dropping her hammer on his foot.
Ah yes, Aster was immediately attacked for realising his lack of performance and skill and oathing to improve. Because that's how people should be treated right?
Granted some people can see that as him trying to look good in front of people (which only shows even more of how much these writers hate men 😑). However, I think he's actually trying to improve and admit how cool Rose was but in a flawed manner being the himbo stereotype that he is. Heck, he even came close to getting her name right (Rose-barb).
The teacher laughing at Aster as Parsley intentionally broke his foot right in front of him...WTF kind of teacher is he?!? Aster needs to have his parents sue the shit out of High Guardian Academy for that.
The thing that really kills me is when she was like "My name is Rosemary" and the dude was like "Are you sure?" Like if they wanted to just portray him as a condescending asshole who refuses to call her by her actual name they could have had him respond with "whatever" but I refuse to believe any real human being would be dumb enough to suggest that someone else doesn't know their own name.
A teacher literally intentionally poisoned her entire class and told them if they didn't make an antidote for it they'd die. The faculty later sends all these undertrained students into a dangerous cave with zero guidance and shames the one kid smart enough to freak out and say this is bullshit. This school clearly doesn't care for the safety of the students.
The way the guy fell was slightly *SLIGHTLY* funny. He literally looks at Rosemary (Thats her name right?) with a dumbass smile and did an “OH SHIT” face once gravity decided to do its thing.

Better idea- when the purple guy finds out Snapdragon is the mermaid, he starts getting flustered because it turns out that he’s got a crush on him, but he’s very nervous about being open about his bisexuality/pansexuality, so he tries hiding it by afterwards picking on him. I can't imagine any professional writer saw this characterization and thought it was a good idea not only do you make them a bizarre combination of bravado and incompetence But according to the rules of of the story and setting with the specific characterization they were given they shouldn't have been allowed into the school in the first place so they only ever materialize and dematerialize in accordance with when they need to be taken down a peg
They could actually give aster some character, all of this facade of him being amazing could just be a mask to hide his insecurities, and when rosemary confronts him about it instead of just folding aster could have gotten angry, which would be a more appropriate emotion and reaction, and have an argument with rosemary, after which they both develop a competitive enemies relationship, in one of those fights aster gets hurt by something rosemary said about him, and just leaves, rosemary would feel guilty and would go say sorry to him, after which they talk a little about their past, and slowly, they would go from enemies to being good friends, with aster opening up more to rosemary about his family issues, they could have made him quite likable and give him his own arc, but unfortunately that didn't happen
For real, that's what I would've imagine they're relationship would be, it's like, his boasting seems so much like he's trying to make himself look good at other people, most of the time, people do that to mask their insecurities, in genuinely shocked they didn't go with that route
I imagine that once they become friend, they would be the dumb and fun duo who often do dares and rope themselves in troubles for comedic reason, requiring a third character to pull them out of the situation

Parsley: *drops hammer on Aster's foot* "Whoops! ;D" Teacher: "Haha, that's what you get white devil!" Seriously, I've seen douchebags in shows get their karma, but this was just done so poorly and bad. Aster didn't even really say anything warranting a "We need to talk" from the teacher, compared to having his foot possibly fractured. Gotta love characters solely being made to be a verbal, physical, and social punching bag for the writer. It's like I'm reading DeviantArt stories created by edgey teenagers all over again.
I can not express to you how exhausted I am of the “arrogant guy lies about how good he is at X to impress a girl and then immediately fails at doing X” trope it’s so tiresome and cringeworthy
You know in shows like RWBY and Steven Universe which have all female leads and/or feminist themes they at least have good male characters. This show just hates men and treats masculinity in general as some horrible thing that needs to be destroyed. Considering the track records of the creators, it doesn't surprise me.
Toxic masculinity is referring to the idea that men have to be stone cold, emotionless beefy super humans who never cry and get what they want (especially women) Which is harmful to both men and women
When people talk about toxic masculenity they don't say that all types of masculenity is toxic. They talk about the type of masculenity that prevents men from crying or showing emotions, or that they can't be victoms, or is basicly one of the things behind why sexist men are sexist towards women. If your type of masculenity includs being kind, lovebly, and open about your emotions then, that's just a type of masculanity that is not toxic.
Snapdragon’s story was so stupid, were we supposed to feel bad for that. His dad clearly wants him to stand up for himself and his brother just said “you sound like a girl”, what about it?
It maybe a shocker but honestly just don't like anyone in this show, including Snapdragon due to more of the actions of the characters themselves, is either dumb or animalistic with their apparent voices of reasoning just sounding like excuses.. maybe because I was grown up as a "hard ass" but there are a lot of holes that make the scenes become none sense. For example: When Young Snapdragon was running away from his older brother with his rabbit. Why was he running away from him? Was his brother going to kill the rabbit? Was his brother just teasing with Snap and don't know any better ? Where was the father beforehand ? Was Snap going run to his father (what a normal kid would do) from this ? Why didn't Snap just push his brother away (is literally the least violent thing you could do in this situation)? At that point is basically everyone's fault that Snap has some childhood trauma from being feminine which I don't like and having Cale as a tool, a massive prick to be used for getting Snap over the edge to violence so he can talk about his issues is just scummy towards the writers, once is fine but twice, especiallysince Snap would know ahead of time to tell the professor if he can change boats but apparently did not too ??? Why can't any of this be natural at all ????
I hate with a capital 'H' when they try to show how strong and capable women are by making the men around them incapable morons, in a funny way it's actually kinda sexist, sends a message that a woman can only be more capable than a man when the man is well someone like Link (Astor).
Have someone notice that they draw Snapdragon's hips waaaaaay to curvy and delicate when he's sitting on the boat but when he stands up he's suddenly super skinny? This show can't even use well their own desing models
One of the problems with High Guardian Spice is that the School/City doesn't feel like a lived in world. It feels like a setpiece for "That Happened" Tumblr stories where everyone claps at the end. Why does Rosemary not know what a Transgendered person is? How come Snap Dragon doesn't know what transition magic is? In a world where people can use magic to become animals, not knowing you can change your gender is odd. Is the world of HGS worse than what we see, possibly. But that's not what we SEE. Take Cal who tries to be transphobic to Snapdragon. Only Cal is transphobic. Everyone claps and stands up for our crossdressing mermaid. Similarly, Caraway is a well respected professor with positive character traits like being transgendered or being transgendered, and who could forget being transgendered. He never faces any blowback for being transgendered even though the voice is a dead giveaway. Not even from Cal. It's like the show is a safespace so the characters never face any real conflict. The only characters who cause problems in this show are one-dimensional jerks who don't last more than an episode. Our characters never have to grow or learn anything to overcome conflict. They're innately good or already know what to do so they can be a symbol of "Girl Power". This is most evident with Aster and Rosemary. Aster is a smug jerk and haughty, hyping up his awesomness...but he's really a goofball and klutz. But so is Rosemary. She's been a goofball and klutz the entire series up to this point. All of a sudden Rosemary's klutziness is nowhere to be seen and she is extremely competent, even pulling Aster up one handed, all so she can put Aster in his place for being a toxic male. What did Rosemary learn the entire episode? Nothing beyond don't fall for idiots. Instead Rosemary exists to teach Aster (and the male audience) that girls rule and you need to deal with it. And then everyone claps when Parsley throws her hammer. Aster could've been a skilled but klutzy guy Rosemary had to overcome...an actual explanation for his haughtiness. Aster and Rosemary could've been goofball rivals who learn from one another and even respect each other as rivals at the end. He could've been a positive (recurring?) male character. Because he's a setpiece for toxic males this doesn't happen.
"It's like the show is a safespace so the characters never face any real conflict." I couldn't say it better ! That's, for me at least, the biggest turn off when I get into a fictionnal story. Very unfortunately, golden people like you, who take time to write contructive criticism won't be heard by the author, who just block everyone that don't completely love the show unconditionally.

Writers: How do we make the women in this show strong and empowered? -Hmm, we could make them brave, with an interesting backstory, friendly and empathetic writers: no, no, no, it is better to make them totally flat, and make men become louts and brainless brutes! we have it!
I always find myself coming back to watch this, because it’s so unbelievable that I always remind myself that this is actually how most women think men act. It’s baffling, I’m not a human made of flesh and blood, i as a man am an enemy, an obstacle to be surpassed. Misandry at its finest
In defence of that statement, it doesn't necessarily mean ACTUAL reality, but more like the artist's reality. And in that case that statement would be absolutely right, because no way in hell that this god-awful writing reflects the real world in any single way lmao
So because they didn't know how to write Good Man characters, they decided to make most of the men either stupid or rude, like those are men's traits And 3:19 what a prick! He had no bad intentions
I think my biggest issue with the characters in this show is that when one of the girls has unlikable traits, they're written realistically and are given redeeming qualities and moments(Amaryllis, Thyme, etc.) but every flawed male character is either given no redeeming qualities like Cal or is just a punching bag like Aster. Also he literally never appears after this episode lol
There’s nothing wrong with having a character that’s like this. It becomes a problem when every male character is written like this just to show “men bad toxic and bad grrr” and then after they make their point they completely dismiss the characters.
The weird thing is that the only non toxic male characters are gone in five seconds too. Any more MAJOR male characters that aren't toxic are frame as backstory character development for the main character or barely there at all. The only non toxic males have been married in this show.. and even that is not a guarentee due to amarylis (Purple haired girl) backstory.
Okay but... not gonna lie, cutting out that last bit where he calls Rosemary stuck up and she complains about him, I actually think Rosemary and Aster would be cute together with a bit of development. Like, seeing Aster tense up on instinct when Rosemary started taking charge, followed by him singing her praises to a whole crowd of people is actually really adorable??? Like, he's a bit confused but he's got the spirit. I dunno, I just think there's a lot of character development potential, with Rosemary learning to stop judging a book by the cover and see him as more than just a pretty face and an overconfident, annoying attitude, and Aster going from "woah she's cute" to "woah she's cute AND SHE CAN KICK MY ASS" and learning to cooperate with her.
why does it feel like most of these clips just enable the idea that violence against men is good, just because they hurt your feelings? vice versa and itd be seen as so messed up to harm a ditzy, boastful girl and for the teacher to approve, yet its 100% seen as a funny haha moment here??
Why don't they just make them choke down some of that transition potion and live as a woman for a month as an 'object lesson'? That trans-potion idea is under-appreciated for how self-defeating it is to the show's agenda. Btw, does this show remind you of the 1980s 'Dungeons & Dragons' cartoon?
Wouldn’t be the first time the incompetent and irresponsible teachers at this academy would magically transform their students against their will Would rather watch all 3 seasons of the D&D cartoon than 3 episodes of this crap
Lol, it would actually have been cool to see an episode where all the students are gender-swapped. Then they'd learn to appreciate the way they were but also empathize with the opposite sex. It could have done wonders for helping cure Sage's misandry, as well as Cal's misogyny. It could have also led to Snap either embracing his femboy side, or questioning whether he felt more comfortable as a male or a female.
@@jonquilgemstone That's just it, if such a potion was available people would do it all the time, particularly in medieval-ish fantasy settings like in the show. For example, during war time, you'd transition females to males who have better muscle mass for fighting. During times of starvation, you'd transition males to female because females require fewer calories. If you thought a male/female body benefitted you in other ways, like for your job, you'd use it there too. Plus, they have shapeshifters in the show, which makes wearing a different body than yours at birth even more mundane. Like so much of the show, they really didn't think it through.
@@guygadbois3010 the whole idea of the potion was to just show that it was easier to transition and it didn’t need to be met with harsh criticism. If there was a potion that made females as strong as men it could be effective in a show that tries to prove women to be more capable than men. It’s not that easy to transition in real life and because the show tries to push a real world agenda is it not that easy or usable in the show. That’s why the purple guy freaks out when snapdragon is a mermaid because guys can’t effectively change their genders in the real world and not the show
@@MustacheDLuffy Though I would say that the reason people keep rewriting and seeing these characters in a different light is because they are effectively... Highschoolers. Highschoolers are toxic, mean, abusive, and their hormones are out of control. The Purple haired guy is definitely someone who thinks that and has probably been raised to think "Men are men, Women are women, Men aren't pretty, women are, Get a girl, you gotta get a girl. Be a ladies man." All of those in repeated succession are toxic ideas. And him not being able to handle a feminine man is proof that his upbringing and his homelife didn't prepare him for a bigger city. and he might even be spoiled too. But they don't learn a lesson, they can't be used to make the other characters learn a lesson either. ITs just "Look this man is bad he is bad he is very bad because he is a man and all STRAIGHT men are assholes." Snap dragon, An effeminette teenager, and someone more in tune with his emotions... Is to become a transgender female because "Real men aren't in touch with their feelings. You're different from other men because you have feelings. You can't relate to a girl because you don't have the same chromosomes. So why not become a girl" is basically his character arch to boot. Also to answer the initial question of the potion.. Just make it not a plot point of a magic potion, make it more dangerous and needing to be handled by a professional or even talk to people about how their are dangerous but nessesary options that The headmaster needed to undergo for the sake of him needing to be the gender he needs to be. The potion is a quick solution but undermines the core aspects of the plight those in transition and those associated with being trans go through. There is soo much more involved. and the show washes it away with a potion. I am not trans nor do I speak for trans people. this is just something I have collected from different comments and videos.
I'm having trouble seeing the connection between the behaviour of both characters', and their gender... They just seem to me like textbook narcissists.
That are some traits associated with traditional masculinity that are toxic and lead to negative outcomes. For example crying and being touch with one’s feelings is seen as a feminine thing
@@Love-yp2fj people who created the term toxic masculinity are people who watched to any rom coms, and can't fathom that maybe, just maybe, men are in touch with their feelings but have different ways of expressing them then women?

man, a lot of men aren't like that, really, I think there's no reason to hate men, just don't submit. seriously, the concept of "feminism" of the creators of this series is horrible, there is a huge difference between wanting equal rights for all and rights for only one gender, which is what they are trying to convey, now I understand why so many men hate feminism , because of this bullshit message that the creators of this series want to convey. who agrees with me, leave a like:
It’s like they based all their ideas of toxic masculinity on cartoon bullies rather than on real human behavior
This is exactly what happened. All the writers are very immature and all their "insights" into human behavior has been mediated through simplistic entertainment tropes that they've mistaken for actual representation of real life.
That's why toxic masculinity is false, because human behavior has to do with the person's actions not their masculine traits.
I don't believe in toxic masculinity, there's just toxic people in this world

Me too
@@elongatedmanforever1252 Everything I hear about “toxic masculinity” basically boils down to being a plain old insensitive jerkwad, traits that no one associated with masculinity besides the biggest assholes.
Probably the writers (and artist) behind this show has parental loveless behavior
@@EmperorZelos while absolutely refusing to acknowledge that misandry is also a thing, and it's NOT the same as feminism.

He keeps calling her Rhubarb because she didn't bother correcting her (due to infatuation) until she was at her wits end and then she angrily corrects him saying her name's Rosemary.

Man does nothing but humiliate himself and they end it with physical violence against him. Psychotic writers

I can't imagine any professional writer saw this characterization and thought it was a good idea not only do you make them a bizarre combination of bravado and incompetence
But according to the rules of of the story and setting with the specific characterization they were given they shouldn't have been allowed into the school in the first place so they only ever materialize and dematerialize in accordance with when they need to be taken down a peg

You know in shows like RWBY and Steven Universe which have all female leads and/or feminist themes they at least have good male characters. This show just hates men and treats masculinity in general as some horrible thing that needs to be destroyed. Considering the track records of the creators, it doesn't surprise me.
There's no such a thing as toxic masculanity, it's only the human that toxic, not the masculanity.
Mistaking toxic behavior for masculinity is what toxic masculinity is
Toxic masculinity is referring to the idea that men have to be stone cold, emotionless beefy super humans who never cry and get what they want (especially women)
Which is harmful to both men and women
💯
When people talk about toxic masculenity they don't say that all types of masculenity is toxic. They talk about the type of masculenity that prevents men from crying or showing emotions, or that they can't be victoms, or is basicly one of the things behind why sexist men are sexist towards women. If your type of masculenity includs being kind, lovebly, and open about your emotions then, that's just a type of masculanity that is not toxic.
Snapdragon’s story was so stupid, were we supposed to feel bad for that. His dad clearly wants him to stand up for himself and his brother just said “you sound like a girl”, what about it?
If you're white, cis, heterosexual and male, you're an antagonist in this universe.
Because naturalism doesn't compute with the people who made this
I hate with a capital 'H' when they try to show how strong and capable women are by making the men around them incapable morons, in a funny way it's actually kinda sexist, sends a message that a woman can only be more capable than a man when the man is well someone like Link (Astor).
Have someone notice that they draw Snapdragon's hips waaaaaay to curvy and delicate when he's sitting on the boat but when he stands up he's suddenly super skinny? This show can't even use well their own desing models

‘SNABDRAGIN STAP’
"It's like the show is a safespace so the characters never face any real conflict."
I couldn't say it better ! That's, for me at least, the biggest turn off when I get into a fictionnal story.
Very unfortunately, golden people like you, who take time to write contructive criticism won't be heard by the author, who just block everyone that don't completely love the show unconditionally.
3:20 seriously? Dropping a hammer on someones foot is ridiculous. Sure he may have been a little arrogant but you don't just do THAT- The only thing this show represents is misandry

Writers: How do we make the women in this show strong and empowered?
-Hmm, we could make them brave, with an interesting backstory, friendly and empathetic
writers: no, no, no, it is better to make them totally flat, and make men become louts and brainless brutes! we have it!
I always find myself coming back to watch this, because it’s so unbelievable that I always remind myself that this is actually how most women think men act. It’s baffling, I’m not a human made of flesh and blood, i as a man am an enemy, an obstacle to be surpassed. Misandry at its finest
They say art reflects reality, this show is one of the reasons why I don’t believe that
In defence of that statement, it doesn't necessarily mean ACTUAL reality, but more like the artist's reality.
And in that case that statement would be absolutely right, because no way in hell that this god-awful writing reflects the real world in any single way lmao
So because they didn't know how to write Good Man characters, they decided to make most of the men either stupid or rude, like those are men's traits
And 3:19 what a prick! He had no bad intentions
I hate these people so much oh my god
okay but why is the blonde dude literally more interesting than the actual main character in all the scenes they're all together
like he's stupid, rude, and talks like a himbo Cali beach boy, i love him. hate the show tho, but I'd take him.
His parents probably took him back home after hammer incident and cited the school
Poor blonde dude. Apologizes and people still hate him.
I know he's supposed to be unlikable, but he kinda just came off as a socially awkward himbo to me
I love how their idea of toxic masculinity is every disney movie jock character
Wouldn’t be the first time the incompetent and irresponsible teachers at this academy would magically transform their students against their will
Would rather watch all 3 seasons of the D&D cartoon than 3 episodes of this crap

“Toxic masculinity” is an oxymoron. Masculinity is a positive trait; so if someone is acting toxic, then they aren’t masculine.
