If the Netflix miniseries Self Made was your introduction to Madam CJ Walker, then it was also loosely your introduction to Annie Turnbo Malone. And I have to say that neither portrayal did justice to either of those women. So in this video, I’m going to reintroduce them both to you, and go more deeply into the life of Annie Turnbo Malone, who is never discussed quite enough in my opinion.
Both women became millionaires in the 1910’s - each selling her own brand of hair care products. Both women are to be celebrated. But a lot more people are familiar with the name and story of Madam CJ Walker, who is known as the first black millionaire and the first woman to become a self-made millionaire.
Before her time, there were certainly white women who were millionaires, but it was because of inherited wealth - usually from a husband or father.
And often when the name Madam CJ Walker is getting some praise, there’s a group of people (usually who are from St Louis) angrily asking, “but what about Annie Turbo Malone?” I understand the questioning as much as I hate it. I’ll explain why a little later.
But more than anything, today, I want to honor both of them, talk about their similarities, and their differences. For example, they both married men who they basically employed. A similarity. BUT while Madam CJ Walker married a man who was a newspaper advertising salesman, and therefore could and did help her to elevate her business...Annie Turnbo Malone married a man who had been a teacher, and she elevated him to the office of President of her company.
He was not qualified to run her business in the capacity that was required of him. And when he divorced her in 1927, she paid DEARLY…which is why I say…that although a picture has been painted that calls out Madam CJ Walker as Annie Turnbo Malone’s rival, her REAL rival was her husband, Aaron Eugene Malone. Annie Turnbo was sleeping with the enemy.

What a wonderful job of telling an amazing woman's story, but telling it in such a way that inspires without tearing down!
As a woman in her 40s who immigrated to the United States, I didn't know much about either woman.
I also want to thank you for coaxing me to reach out for the stars again... even if my story may not shine as bright as someone elses or had more adversity, it is still mine, and that is something to be proud of.
Most of all, thank you for spreading this amazing woman's story and others like it. I am always encouraged by those who not only advocate and lift up but teach us how to lift each other up, as well.

I remember having heard or read about Sarah Breedlove, or Madame C.J. Walker, but not from any supposed documentary. However I do not remember having ever heard of or read about Annie Turnbo Malone. This was a lovely video. I'm very glad to have seen it. I can't help but think that Sarah Breedlove having died so younng (especially so long before the great depression and so much younger than ATM) might have tended to immortalize her. Things aren't always what they seem. Kittyhawk has put North Carolina on the map for doing something first that a New England state in all liklihood beat them to. So I'm glad you didn't make who did what first the emphasis of your video. Very, very nicely done!

I just laid down to have a snack and tuned in to this video to play in the background while I surfed the net. I know of Madam’s story, not much of Annie’s, so I’m like lemme check this out..I’m half into it until I hear your words at the end that made my ears perk up. They almost made me cry. I’m dealing with personal stuff right now that I’m on the fence about and your words struck a deep nerve. I was shoving feelings way down deep I wasn’t ready to deal with but hearing what you said made me realize I gotta make some major decisions in my life this year. I didn’t expect your informative video to be a therapy session as well but it’s the emotional boost I needed I didn’t know I needed. Thank you for that and perhaps consider doing a UA-cam motivational channel you have such a soothing voice for it.

Happy new year, Ti! Wishing you and yours the absolute best.
I think it’s weird and disrespectful that the most recent movie didn’t represent these women more accurately. The real story is just as entertaining and enlightening as the creative liberties. Not sure why the writers didn’t see it this way.
As a teen, I’d heard of Mrs. Malone, but it was more like a small caption. It would’ve been even better if we knew there were two Black women millionaires during that time instead of focusing on one. I mean, come on.
I loved the story you did on Madame C.J. Walker’s daughter, especially when you mentioned she was on a ship similar to the Titanic.

What is crazy is that there was another Black woman during the early 1900s in Atlantic City, NJ that became a millionaire selling her own hair products and ran a school. The book Boardwalk Empire, the most comprehensive history about Atlantic City talks about her in the chapter of Black Atlantic City.

I love stories like these - people coming from a less-than-advantageous background (putting it mildly) making it to the top (fame, fortune, their biggest and best goals) through hard work and in spite of social, political, and financial obstacles in their way. This is what America is supposed to be about.
I'm a white female. I think it's disgusting when one group of people discriminates against another because of superficial nonsense. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I believe in what Dr. King Jr. said about judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. I think that should apply to everyone. I've known good people and not-so-good people of many ethnic backgrounds. I wouldn't want people judging me by my appearance and I strive to always judge by what's inside.
I know some people might think having less melanin in my skin means I'm "privileged. " Gotta tell ya, my life suggests otherwise. I've been through a lot, just like lots of other people. I think instead of assuming things, we should talk to each other and find out. I know this world will never be perfect but I believe if we all work together and challenge our own individual preconceptions, we can make it a better world for everyone. 😊
