I have never heard of Mary Seacole before today and now I can only ask, Florence WHO?? That lady discriminated against Mother Seacole due to her race, and then made a show of donating to Mary's poverty fund once they had returned home. This woman should be a cultural icon! Yup! When people are complaining about "historical accuracy" when it comes to the skintone of elves, dwarves, hobbits and mermaids....... you know their problem is nothing to do with actual history. All "historical drama" is essentially fantasy especially if the source is fiction, and IMO there is zero justification for excluding an entire group of actors from genre roles based solely on their skintone.
Agreed. A common complaint these days "Why are Romans/vikings/greeks black...it's not historical!" If we're going for we should be asking why are they always talking with British accents? People hate having their biases questioned though. 😊

I both agree and disagree. Multiple skin tones, sure. Bringing in other cultures and melding them in, refreshing. If it’s in a purely historical drama that doesn’t use actual historical individuals and replace whatever race they are with another. Love your videos Lindsay. Just wanted to add that historically Yoruba was, and still is a tribe and language, not a place or village. So Sarah was not “born in Yoruba”, she was born in Oke Odan, which was one of the many Yoruba speaking villages/lands that existed. Additionally, saying at 3:55 that “His parents were also from Yoruba” is also incorrect.
Yoruba are not they one of the missing Tribes of Israel. There is a video done last year, where a Jewish Rabbi officially said they are the ancient Hebrews. The Yoruba were not asking for his permission 😅. They know their history or are at present now learning who they truly are.

It's nice how some of these families who suddenly had Black children or grandchildren they never expected to have, they were still pleasant to them. Like, a white British 1800s Grandpa sharing his passion for music with his illegitimate Black grandson is just nice. Sometimes it takes a reminder that there's always been decent people around.
I really do hope that school teachers show history like this to their students. You don't have to be royal to be a history-maker, but my gosh these individuals are worthy of note!

However, I should inform you that as you said in 1:10, Yoruba isn't a place. It's actually a people, made up of different subgroups and ethnicities. Oke-Odan as you mentioned is her birth home is probably an earlier form of Eba- Odan, which later became Ibadan, capital city of Oyo State. Which means she was probably a princess of the Oyo Empire. My relative Jacob Jenkins Roberts, was a weathy man from the Roberts family of Virgina, a free black family spread out from Norfolk to Williamsburg to St. Petersburg. He was a part of the movement to bring Black slaves back to Africa (the outcome is controversial). This ended up in the creation of Liberia. He is the namesake of the Airport and he was the first president - an American - of Liberia. His wife, Jane, also from a free black family and from Virginia, lived her later years in London, after his death. She is buried in Highgate Cemetary in London.

Sarah Rector would make a great story. Her father was enslaved, she was given land in Oklahoma. They found oil on her land and she became so insanely wealthy that even though she was black and indigenous, her race was legally changed to white.

I have never heard of Mary Seacole before today and now I can only ask, Florence WHO?? That lady discriminated against Mother Seacole due to her race, and then made a show of donating to Mary's poverty fund once they had returned home. This woman should be a cultural icon! All "historical drama" is essentially fantasy especially if the source is fiction, and IMO there is zero justification for excluding an entire group of actors from genre roles based solely on their skintone.

Love your videos Lindsay. Just wanted to add that historically Yoruba was, and still is a tribe and language, not a place or village. So Sarah was not “born in Yoruba”, she was born in Oke Odan, which was one of the many Yoruba speaking villages/lands that existed.
Additionally, saying at 3:55 that “His parents were also from Yoruba” is also incorrect.

It's nice how some of these families who suddenly had Black children or grandchildren they never expected to have, they were still pleasant to them. Around B.C. 1500 Europe had gradually changed from an all - Black populous inhabitant to a multi -racial continent. Every European nation prior to the presence of whites was ruled by the indigenous Africans, who were called Moors, meaning BLACK or NEGRO.
History has proven that Europe was once occupied by a black skinned people, who brought the concept of religion, government, King , Queen, agriculture, medicine, science, and fine arts to the continent. Cromwell's intention was to obliterate the DARK -SKINNED noble families of Europe, and to annihilate the NEGRO STEWART DYNASTY!

Unfortunately, many people do not study history and are unaware of how many people of color and significance traveled to or were born in Europe- actually there are too many to fit in to just one video! Hi Lindsay. Love your videos. Thank you for including not 1, but 2, prominent Yoruba people, both royalty, as some sources say Aina and her husband were children of Chiefs or Kings. However, I should inform you that as you said in 1:10, Yoruba isn't a place. It's actually a people, made up of different subgroups and ethnicities. Oke-Odan as you mentioned is her birth home is probably an earlier form of Eba- Odan, which later became Ibadan, capital city of Oyo State. Which means she was probably a princess of the Oyo Empire. There was no place called Yoruba. We are a people, and not a place.

My relative Jacob Jenkins Roberts, was a weathy man from the Roberts family of Virgina, a free black family spread out from Norfolk to Williamsburg to St. Petersburg. He was a part of the movement to bring Black slaves back to Africa (the outcome is controversial). This ended up in the creation of Liberia. He is the namesake of the Airport and he was the first president - an American - of Liberia. His wife, Jane, also from a free black family and from Virginia, lived her later years in London, after his death. She is buried in Highgate Cemetary in London.
