Late to the game, but i bought a Kenner 12 inch Luke doll several years back. The top portion had the same issue as your diving suit. It has juice stains and other marks. What i did was to dunk the top in lukewarm water with oxy clean in a mason jar. I was nto sure if it would work and it did a marvelous job. The Tunic was ultra clean, the stains had come off. The only thing that oxy clean did badly was to discolor the printed with ink sticker inside the tunic but since it was inside it was no big deal. I also gave the body as good wash with same solution and it did clean it up nicely.
I always enjoy your videos, Dave. I cleaned and restored my set of Kiss Megos. My favourite part is always the cleaning of the costumes. It’s funny how much dirt are in these 40-50 year old clothes.
As a kid I had a footlocker dedicated to Joe.bits and preserving them. Collected a lot of figures kids thought were broken. Had about 70 figures collected from garage sales and trading. And yes G.I. JOE taught me to sew.
My 60's deep sea diving suit was very badly stained. I mixed four parts of luke warm water to one of household bleach and then soaked the costume in it for 20 minutes, rinsed very thoroughly in cold water. It restored it beautifully.
I took all of my Deep Sea Diver suits and gloves, and soaked them in tea for an hour. The suits look like the real ones, and I like the look. I'm keeping mine with no plans to sell.
Instead of the oxy, try peroxide creme. It's what hairdressers use. You can get it in different percentages of strength. Available cheaply from hairdresser supply shops. Also great for retro brighting
The main ingredient in OXY 10 is benzoyl peroxide so you could save money by using cheaper versions as there are lots of creams that also have benzoyl peroxide as their main component. Some may possibly be slightly stronger.
Everytime I see these Deepsea divers I think of that episode of Sea Hunt where the Deepsea divers hate the scuba divers and Mike needs to begrudgingly save one from a deadly fate I love that show I'm sure it helped in selling these guys too. The Gi Joe scuba diver was basically an unofficial Mike Nelson action figure.
Thanks! Make videos that you would enjoy yourself and just keep going. There is no right or wrong way to make videos. And very few get any sort of overnight success. It's taken me 10 years.
From what I remember, the diving suit had a rubber coating on the inside, and I remember over time, that this use to leave a white power on the figure. I have mine in the loft somewhere, will see if I can find it.
I'm not sure if it's to ingrained, but you can remove permanent marker ink from smooth surfaces by scribbling over it with a dry marker, leaving it for a minute, or so and then wiping it off.
Good job as usual, David. I got a bit worried about the rusty metal parts... Thought you were going to submerge them in vinegar! For glueing the hands, maybe silicone adhesive would work better? I'm always partial as to not use superglue, as it doesn't stay flexible after it has dried and I guess the hands could come off because of that.
How nice and curious it is. I have recently taken the same Gi Joe deep sea adventure to restore in pretty much the same state. Both hands completely destroyed and one foot and lower leg missing. The head is just kind of dirty, white diving suit yellowish and stained and diving gear complete and in a decent state. Unfortunately the missing parts are not available because the only Brazilan Gi Joes were produced in the so called muscle body. This old body model was never sold in large scale here. I'm doing my best to adjust these newer model parts such as hands and legs but they are considerably different. I think it will be nice in the end because most body is not visible when dressed up. I want to make it is at least poseble and steady to put it in display. Thanks.
Nicely done! You may have trouble removing the stains from the suit if it's a synthetic. I did have a favourite white poly cotton t-shirt of mine that ended up with some mold spots on it after it was left in the bottom of a plastic garbage bag when I moved house. I soaked the shirt in a bucket of hot water with a couple of capfuls of 'Vanish Napi-San Oxy Action Crystal White' (That's the Australian brand) for a few hours. I had to repeat the soak/heavy machine wash process 4 times but the shirt came totally clean on the 4th wash. Note that I exceeded the amount of powder and soak time recommendations and it hasn't damaged the shirt. I had this G.I.Joe equivalent set back in the 60s/70s. From memory it was bundled with and inflatable raft, a treasure chest, and a plastic Octopus. I used to have him diving in our swimming pool, and I remember running out of breath trying to blow air through the pipe into the helmet. It was a really well made set with the metal weights for the boots and the weightbelt. Lots of happy memories.
actual action man’s divers suit just came today I was cleaning it there’s like these brown spots on the glove and suit and a layer and some thing it felt very leathery it was all crackling and peeling in bad condition but I don’t know what these brown spots are on his suit
The steradent tables...can they be used on other action man clothing or just white outfits? Also what elastic did you buy, 5mm bungee cord, or Hats and craft cord?
Never put a fuzz head in water. If I'm not mistaken then the glue that holds the hair to his head is water soluble. So if you put the head in water hair then the hair will fall out as I've come to learn in the 70's at the cost of some of my beloved Action Men. ;-)
They are fine in water. Would be a bad design if they weren't. Not sure what happened to yours. They were designed to be used anywhere, and came with many underwater outfits. Mine got dunked in the bath all the time.
@Toy Palloi: Thanks for the info. Maybe we simply "played too hard" w/ Action Man in the swimming pool then. Good to know that I can easily put my flock heads in water to clean 'm. P.S. Love these vids. Might get me a Facebook account to join discussions or to ask advice. :-)
Try nail varnish remover for the ink or even spray deodorant we used it on train seats 💺 and also on cars 🚙 🚘 🚗. Also nail varnish remover is good for removing curry and chilli stains. As is hydrogen peroxide
Hi, could you tell me the type of the strong elastic you used in this restoration, inside the action man to hold the body parts together? I can't get to a haberdashery, so I will have to order the elastic online. Obviously I don't want to end up with some elastic that isn't strong enough. Thanks
I have a blue pants talking commander and the metal spring has come unwound where by the pull string is completely extended. Is there anyway to rewind the metal spring?
Holy Diver,or stinky diver;) . Looks like this guy's had a run-in with some squid ink and judging from the elastic he's been wearing those weights a little too long.
Try ammonia soaked cotton swabs on the mustache. It might work out okay. There's also an ink cleaner solution used to clean ink from technical pens that might prove helpful. That's worth a try, I'd think.
Never had one as old as him only the blue pants later versions as I got my first one for my 8th birthday in ‘81. I’ve recently picked one up with the assault craft vehicle and he needs restringing. What thickness elastic would you recommend?
great job, done a few of these myself. Try using a dog brush on the hair (hook type), was dubious first time I used one but they're great for reviving flock.
I loved my action man a a kid, and this afternoon my dad found him In his attic, he Is In such good condition although I will restore his hair when I get the chance as he Is a little bald considering his age lol
hey toy poloi you can get the original hands and other parts for that figure at cotswoldcollectibles.com he also has the outfit set too you should check it out...I also collect G.I.Joe's and Action man figures.....oh by the way he also carries the original heads too
I also tried Oxi 10 cream and like you found the results unsatisfactory. Also avoid ethymal antiseptic toothpaste it has a similar bleaching agent, but again the results can be disappointing against some ink stains and marker pen. The best results I've had are sunlight and hydrogen peroxide. Hopefully you'll have some trick or other in mind so poor Action Man doesn't look like Hitler any more lol, good luck. ;-)
Damian Jones I used benzol peroxide on a moulded face Jedi Luke and it took a few days to get all the ink splodges off. It's a slow, laborious process but worth the end result
didn't get a shout out for the tip on the 3mm elastic! :( I'd have that head re-flocked with a beard to cover that stain! expensive for only 1 head but your other head looks like it could do with a re-flock itself so you could save on p&p or maybe you could do a re-flock of your own?

I find these resources very helpful. Keep up the good work. In Canada and the US he is still give GI Joe.
That’s so cool! I was worried it would be too hard if any of my Joes ever broke apart but I think I can handle it!
never been an action man fan but I love to see them restored, will be good to see the end result
You what!?!
As a kid I had a footlocker dedicated to Joe.bits and preserving them. Collected a lot of figures kids thought were broken. Had about 70 figures collected from garage sales and trading. And yes G.I. JOE taught me to sew.
From the ink moustache I think we can all guess which nation the kid decided that action man was representing in battle...
Liofa herr schickelgruber after a boxing match maybe
I got tired of waiting for him to mention the clear hitler-stache so I came down here and yup, first comment 😁
I know where you're Goering with these puns. It's not Reich that you should be making these jokes.
He's clearly Action Chaplin
First Picture, it was a real garbage... The last was a real collection... Well done Sir!
My 60's deep sea diving suit was very badly stained. I mixed four parts of luke warm water to one of household bleach and then soaked the costume in it for 20 minutes, rinsed very thoroughly in cold water. It restored it beautifully.

What an awesome video!!! Thks this really gave me ideas. Can’t wait to explore one!! 😂😂 repair
Thanks. I have quite a few action man projects on the channel.

Very talented. Thank you. Which recent strategy is your favourite for YT channel growth?
Thanks! Make videos that you would enjoy yourself and just keep going. There is no right or wrong way to make videos. And very few get any sort of overnight success. It's taken me 10 years.
Is the suit still rubberised Twill? I had one of these in about 1968/9, and it was definitely rubberised.
From what I remember, the diving suit had a rubber coating on the inside, and I remember over time, that this use to leave a white power on the figure. I have mine in the loft somewhere, will see if I can find it.
Action Man had a bad case of THE BENDS in this restoration!
I'm not sure if it's to ingrained, but you can remove permanent marker ink from smooth surfaces by scribbling over it with a dry marker, leaving it for a minute, or so and then wiping it off.

Must be an old one, the late 70s early 80s ones we had as kids, had blue underpants on!
It is, late 60s to mid 70s
@@TristenTheArgonian with the gripping hands and flock early mid 70's

Oxy works better in the summer or in hot temperatures, putting the head in the dashboard of your car on a sunny day will really get the ink out
Not a fan of Action Man but still great and interesting to watch.
The diver's name is Randall Raymond Chaplin; the Great Great Grandson of the immortal comic, Charlie Chaplin!
seriously??? I didn't know that?! Thanks 4 thee info, buddy!!! 💯🤔😁👌🏼
awesome I wonder if that fix will work on my ones hands whats the link to the site you got the replacment hands from ?
+tycondrius fitz They can be found cheapest on eBay.

THATS A SAD ..NOT SO ACTION MAN! Great info tho! THANK YOU!!!❤

Have you ever used paint thinners for removing ink , good chance it would work
+Retro Fusion I would expect them to damage the plastic as they are quite strong solvents.
almost certainly would, not worth the risk!
The steradent tables...can they be used on other action man clothing or just white outfits?
Also what elastic did you buy, 5mm bungee cord, or Hats and craft cord?
I've never tried them on anything but white fabric. I just bought craft elastic from my local fabric shop. Cheers
You've done an amazing Job. Glad you managed to restore his head as well. Do you sell the toy polloi t shirts. For action man
Thanks. The shirts are just for the Action Guys you see in my videos here and on TP2.
@@toypolloi do you have any for sale my action man was asking.

I remember being about 6/7yrs old and I had the deep sea divers action man and I lost him in the canal...all that came back was his helmet.
That sucks
Look into. Jase Marshell's FLOPPY JOE RE-STRING KIT at Marshall Made Collectables.
GOOD JOB!!!!
Oxy10 and sunshine repeated over several days worked for me on an ink moustache - best leaving until the summer in the UK
Awesome concentrate Spray cleaner will do it mixed with some laundry detergent!!!!
If you would be so kind as to tell me where to purchase the hands for the action man they look great and I love your channel
Sure thing. Ebay. Just search for Action Man 40th Hands and they will come up. Cheers
Try nail varnish remover for the ink or even spray deodorant we used it on train seats 💺 and also on cars 🚙 🚘 🚗. Also nail varnish remover is good for removing curry and chilli stains. As is hydrogen peroxide
Nail varnish remover damages the plastic, so I would not suggest using that. I will try the other two and see what happens. Cheers

3 or 4mm round elastic will work.
I have a blue pants talking commander and the metal spring has come unwound where by the pull string is completely extended. Is there anyway to rewind the metal spring?
You'll need to find a replacement spring to fix that. Cheers
Could you do videos where you show how to make uniforms

Thanks Dave, another interesting video.
Thanks Ant. More to come on this chap soon.
I enjoy the Action Man stuff immensely. Big fan of 1:6 scale toys so this is right up my street..
+Good'ol Antny There are more action man videos to come. Filming some at the moment.

even though im an expert AM restorer myself, i cant wait an longer for part 2 of this video, now hurry it up mr polloi! ;)
Next weekend. This weekend is the second part of the Geekforce falcon as voted for by my twitter and Facebook followers.
well at least that's something to look forward to in the meantime!
Regarding the elastic cord; as I always say, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!
Use vinegar or C.L.R. on the rust
I loved my action man a a kid, and this afternoon my dad found him In his attic, he Is In such good condition although I will restore his hair when I get the chance as he Is a little bald considering his age lol
I had the deep sea diver as a kid, dont remember any action men other than eagle eyes though
is this a rare toy from the 30s?
Has anyone tried a product called "Goo-Gone" made from orange oil? Also, what about the dollar store product "Awesome"?
Look like he was going for the full shave jk lol
Would you sale some gi. Joe close.
I grant that tape probably works better, but have you ever considered a lint roller for cleaning action men?
Have you ever restored a Darth Vader carrying case
+J Koyne Yes. Do a search it will come up.
hey toy poloi you can get the original hands and other parts for that figure at cotswoldcollectibles.com he also has the outfit set too you should check it out...I also collect G.I.Joe's and Action man figures.....oh by the way he also carries the original heads too
Use thick bleach and water in the sink to clean oufit
Wow. With all the sowing and cleaning you'll make a great wife someday. Lol
+Shannon Helton Thanks :) Nothing wrong with having good sewing and cleaning skills.

Hi
A drop of super glue on the ends of the elastic will keep them from fraying apart.
Thanks. Good tip.
You can get out the Rusty peaces wir lemonjuice.
