The Story of the popular boy's toys by Palitoy.
Action Man was originally produced and sold in the United Kingdom and Australia by Palitoy Ltd of Coalville, Leicestershire from 1966 until 1984 (Palitoy also offered sub-licences to various toy manufacturers in various markets).
The figure and accessories were originally based on the Hasbro (US) 1964 G.I. Joe figure (for 1966-1969 production). Hasbro's G.I. Joe figure was patented in 1966.[1] Even the specific method of attaching the appendages was patented as a "Connection for Use in Toy Figures".The first Action Man figures were Action Soldier, Action Sailor and Action Pilot. All were available in the four original hair colours: Blonde, Auburn, Brown and Black. They were accompanied by outfits depicting United States Forces of WWII and the Korean War. In later years, the figures and accompanying uniforms and accessories would reflect the forces of the United Kingdom rather than the USA. Action Man was subsequently reintroduced in 1993, based on the G.I. Joe Hall of Fame figure of that time.

It was OPEC that really killed action man. Palitoy had the licence to produce star wars. Why didn't they produce star wars action man? Price of oil was so high in the early 80s that plastic was at a premium and you could get 4 or 5 star wars figures for 1 action man. Sad.

Original Palitoy Action man started 1966 and 100% discontinued in 1985. Hasbro brought him back in 1992 and was discontinued in 2006.
The same year Modellers loft got the licence from hasbro and released a huge selection of 40th Anniversary reproduction Action Man figures and unform sets from the 66-85 Palitoy line.
2016 saw the licence get taken by Art & Science who released a small selection of 50th Anniversary figures and also released an actual new line of Action Man figures to toy stores in 2018, unfortunately they were a bit disappointing!

Boys of Britain haven't abandoned us!
I guess as a Russian born, South African raised female I am the exception but my 1970s Action Man is special to me. Battered and missing his hands he is the most precious toy in my collection. I got him second hand and well loved. He is retired now, on a wine farm with a new Barbie friend. Having well earned rest but still getting an odd itch to get back into action.

Action Man deserves a Victoria Cross. Dudes been through millions of battles, on land, sea, space, air and wherever the kid owner's imaginations took them. He even did Judo and Football in his time off, and like an old soldier, he will never die.
    LONG LIVE ACTION MAN!

I am this action man.... an unwanted toy, thats not gonna sit around waiting to be recycled. I felt this story. The confusion, the desire to persevere, the aspect of being a man out of his time n place, but one still with a mission to complete..., the disenchantment.... n finally the hope, triumph n pride. This video is a masterwork of stop motion, voice acting, pop culture history and emotional rollercoasting. Bravo. Cheers from NY USA :)

Don’t know why this suddenly showed up in my recommended videos in 2023 but what a treat.
It brought back a wave of nostalgia for this eternal man child born in 58.
My best friend and I both had collections though his was definitely better than mine, complete with jeep and bearded frogman.
We used to set up really elaborate forts and scenarios and borrow my dads 120 camera and slides of the action, truly living up to the name. Not too bad for 10 year olds!
Watching your film I can hear the tune and words of the action man tv advert, not even thought about this for nearly 50 years, it went something like:
    Action man is here,
    Action man is there,
On land and sea and in the air,
    You’ll find him everywhere.
Brave and fearless, he’s a fighter,
    No assignment ever troubles him.
    Action man is here,
    Action man is there.

Christmas 1967 and I unwrapped a 1st edition Tommy Gunn. Still have him, he's highly collectable and thanks to ebay he's getting all the bits of kit that I wanted but we couldn't afford back then. I would spend hours with my mates and their 'Action Men' creating scenarios by rigging up zip wires with string or attaching them to home made parachutes and then dropping them from a bedroom window. They were happy days in the world of a young boys imagination.

Star Wars didn't kill Action Man, Palitoy was marketing Action Man and Star Wars and found itself in competition with itself!
Eventually the fashion headed towards smaller figures and a greater range of vehicles and accessories at a cheaper price.
Sad, but true. Action Man isn't dead, he's just enjoying a comfortable retirement with his loved ones, those who grew up with him...

Great video, loved it, I was a kid in the sixties and early seventies and loved these things, shame they are not around today in affordable prices, I have got a few of the 40th and 50th for my grandson, you could make your imagination run wild with these figures, unlike the computer game generation of today.

Funny you should say about computer games now with kids. I used to play outside with my action man In armoured vehicles. Great days & memories. Glad you liked the video.

The first one my parents bought me was Crime buster and Raid (I don't remember raid, I think my dog might have ate it) I was 4 years old, I played with him so much I ended up having a collection of like 14 action men ;]

Now there is a new generation of boys playing with action man, I bought one a year ago in its box, it was made in 1996 so not the original, I sent it to my little cousin after we watched a Netflix documentary on popular toys and he became excited.
(I had already posted a comment telling this story but my grammar was so tragic I had to delete it.)
