  • Sudha Murthy is from North Karnataka, and she has set the stage for this book against the backdrop of her homeland. The book is divided into 14 chapters, each dedicated to an individual from her village. These distinctive personalities were part of her growing-up years in Karnataka. Murthy says, none of these people were rich, had fame or any recognition from society, yet she learnt valuable lessons from each of them. What stands out in all these personalities is their transparent minds, straightforwardness, and helpful nature, along with their unparalleled love and affection for the community.
In the book, readers encounter simple characters from a simpler time-small farmers, shopkeepers, local aunties and uncles, grandparents, cousins, and distant relatives. There is, for example, ‘Bundle Bindu,’ a handsome young man, who has a habit of exaggerating the facts but is also someone who never says no to anyone. He is also a wonderful history teacher, who inspired a love for Kannada in Murthy and made otherwise dull history lessons come alive with his eloquent oratory skills. There is ‘Jayant the Shopkeeper,’ who has no knack for business but insists on running a shop anyway, gets taken for a ride by all ends up losing everything he had. There is also ‘Hema the Woman Friday’ who’s ever willing to chip in whenever and wherever her help is required, without expecting anything in return. She taught Nali to be selfless and have a compassionate heart. Lastly, 'Lunch Box Nalini,' the author's favourite tale, is a character who appears in every story, relishing food and carrying her lunch box to gatherings.
Reading the book, one realizes that these characters mirror individuals encountered in one's own life-the helpful aunt, the unreliable uncle, the naïve businessman easily deceived, the jealous neighbour, the ever-helpful cousin, and others, each with unique qualities and valuable life lessons if one is willing to listen and observe.
In summary, "Common Yet Uncommon" is an immensely enjoyable book suitable that you enjoy in one or two sittings, preferably on a lazy Sunday afternoon, enjoyed with a cup of hot chai. The book explores the intricacies of human nature, childhood memories, and hometown connections. It also celebrates the imperfections and compassion of human beings.
