The Gumball Rally is a 1976 film about a coast-to-coast road race. It was inspired by the actual Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash run held by Brock Yates that inspired several other movies, like Cannonball with David Carradine, also from 1976. The main difference is while Cannonball is an action film, The Gumball Rally is a comedy, just like the later series of Cannonball movies starring Burt Reynolds and many others. The Gumball Rally is often considered better and less infantile[citation needed] compared to the later, star-studded exploitations of The Cannonball Run, which even copied the running gags of the police man chasing the racers through the whole USA. Though Gumball Rally's entire premise is copied from the actual cross country race the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash which was created and organized by Brock Yates who wrote the script for The Cannonball Run film.
The Gumball Rally stars Raul Julia, Michael Sarrazin, Norman Burton, Gary Busey, John Durran, Tim McIntire, and Susan Flannery, and was directed and co-written by Chuck Bail.

Yeah, the "cars" sounded like their real world counter parts would have sounded. So the Cobra has a 427 FE, the Chevy van seems to have a 454, the Porsche sounds like a Porsche and the Ferrari sounds awesome. It looks like they used a lot of John Frankenheimer's filming techniques which only make it better.

Yeah, or close by a V8 ? !! But the start seen, it has the synthesized sound of the cody coyote from hardcastle and mccormack but at least some other parts, are the pure V 12 :):) Not sure, if you've ever watched hardcatle and mccormack..Also the lamborghini countache from the cannonball run, uses that same synthesized sound and sometimes the LEGIT V 12 sound...Just saying😇🙃

IT is the only movie of its kind that the sounds recorded were the actual engine sounds. All movies of its type like all of the Cannonball, and Gone in sixty seconds were dubbed in later. The shot of New York in the morning with the engines humming is priceless.

It's just amazing. They used that sound in a bunch of movies and TV shows after this movie. They dubbed it for the Countach in the Cannonball Run, the Coyote in Hardcastle and McCormick, the gold Ferrari in a chase in Riptide, the Ferrari girl in National Lampoon and several more. It seems that the master recording was made for Gumball of an actual Ferrari 365 and dubbed in as needed in this movie. And afterward Hollywood used the sounds in all the other shows

Pure automotive bliss. Love the Daytona blasting pass the cop at high speed and "it's gonna be a nice day" remark. The sounds of those cars at speed and from distance in the city is marvelous. It got even better after this clip ends and the Cobra is racing through the tunnel. The producers of this film really understood the thrill of speed and performance and perhaps captured it in a way never done before or since in cinema. There were movies with bigger car stunts etc but has any film better captured the performance car experience like this and while seeing the actors?

There are lots. There are more well known ones like the original Mad Max movie which has some awesome cars, chase scenes, bikes, and crashes, Vanishing Point (original), Bullitt, Italian Job, Death Race (2008), The Seven Up's, Italian Job, Rush, Fear is the Key, Duel. There are loads. My recommendation is Sorcerer (1977) Its not a car movie. Its about driving trucks, but its an absolutely awesome movie from start to finish.

      Hi bro
Madmax is ok, but I don't know if is a car movie. Are cars without brands, in a post apocalyptic place.
Bullit is great, but is not a car movie. Have that chase between the Charger and the Mustang, but nothing more. Basically is a police case. Like the French Connection.
Italian Job. Both are awesome both, but I prefer the gumball Rally. I love Minis (I have a classic) but the Daytona, Cobra, SL, Porsche Targa of Gumball Rally are even better.
Death Race I didn't watched yet, the same with Seven Ups and Sorcerer
Rush and Ford Vs Ferrari are fantastic, but are about profesional races.
I love the Gumball Rally cars. Not other movie use that king of cars. The 356 spyder used in the movie, is Original. Not a replica like in Miami Vice.
      Cheers man

Hi, mate. I guess there really is no such thing as the "best" car movie. Its all just personal preference at the end of the day.
The cars in the original Mad Max movie are real world brands of car. They have body kits/modifications, but they are still recognizable as the original cars. The Ford Falcon is an epic looking car. I don't like Mad Max Fury Road as the cars are too far fetched.
Another favourite car movie of mine is Redline. Its an animated film, but its cool as hell. Check out the Trailer for it on youtube if you haven't seen it. Its something different. I think it took them a long time to create it.

She did in fact crash. :(
Quickly then replaced with another Daytona Spyder. The Cobra was smacked around abit, too. Notice the smashed front-end in some scenes during the "river-race." The original Daytona is now at the Petersen Museum, in Los Angeles. Quick side-note. I saw that Daytona at the 1983 Concours d'Elegance, license plates read: "Gumball" (She fetched $100,000 at an auction.) But today - priceless.

@carbonfootprintmyass April 1976(?) article on "the making of the Gumball Rally" stated that the Camaro started with a 400HP race engine that wasn't broken in. It blew up. A few other engines were used that also blew. Finally, to wrap filming, they needed the last shots of the car. A crew member suggested they rent a Camaro from Hertz or Avis and "borrow" the engine. They did, wrapped filming, reinstalled the engine into the rental and returned the car.

Several years ago, I read that, except for the crash scenes, the actors insisted and were allowed to do all the driving, including blasting through Manhattan.
There was also a rumor that the Jaguar XKE was supposed to finish third in the original movie draft. But because of the trash Lucas electrical system in the Jaguars of that era, they really couldn't get the car to run, and no other XKEs were available on short notice, so the script was altered during filming.

The younger girl in the yellow jacket in the Porsche is so cute! She's def turned on by the start of her first gumball, and Franco behind her she def has sensory overload!

I owned two Jaguar XKE V12’s, and that sound trying to crank was unfortunately all to familiar. When he said it’s a nice design, I wish it ran, he definitely wasn’t kidding. An absolutely beautiful car, but the biggest piece of junk on the highway. They are only reliable if you have a rollback following you everywhere you go.

Gumball Rally is my father's Chuck Bail film and he took the time to record all the motors, revs, etc I still have the Gumball Rally trophy full of gumballs. I'm not a movie memorabilia collector. If anyone interested in it for collection or clubhouse contact me and let's talk.

Gumball Rally is SO much better than Cannonball Run, a miserable train wreck of a movie.

Dean and Sammy in the Ferrari made it somewhat passable. But yes, it rather sucked over all!
