  • It's not as bad as it could be. Our tow hitch worked loose. We did not have the tools to fix it.
We work the problem, developed a solution, visited the Walmart, and continue north to the Quebec city area.

I’m the one that had trouble undo in the passenger seat on my Spyder F3. Well, I took off the trunk and run a big screwdriver to the area where it is locked and I ended up breaking the plastic that holds everything but it works I fixed it.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Oh no ...was Dudley Dooright there and the lady in black lol. We watch a UA-camr called Mike a scavenger and it is amazing what he pulls out of the trash to scrap. And it's only metal stuff but the waist is ridiculous. We see them everywhere in the US. They are growing in numbers for sure. At the French Thousand Trails in Pompano Beach they all had Can-Ams. I've lost plenty of organs driving around America. Harbor Freight will have the channel locks. We love trains. Good job John you saved the day. Love the AirBnB. Another great video.

That's a scary adventure, I had a similar incident awhile back on a logging road in Nothern Ontario. When the ball actually detached from the hitch while I was towing a boat into a lake. Never to be seen again. Thankfully I always bring a spare and tools otherwise it would have been a days drive back to the main road without the boat.
I am certainly glad yours was caught in good time without a major incident. GREAT INFORMATIVE POST !!!

The have a wrench for the hitch ball sized for the ball and an adjustable wrench can be used for the nut. An option you can use is red threadlocker to assure the nut will not work loose.

Glad you averted a more serious problem, had that tow ball come completely loose. One other item I would personally carry would be a spare drive belt and all tools necessary to replace it. One well placed stone could easily leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, also far, far away from a spare part.

I noticed when you put the ball into your hitch that the shank ( threaded part of ball) had a lot of play in the hole. You may need a ball with a larger shank.

Glad you caught that in time.We bought our Spyder used with a Freedom trailer. But never used it for the first year. but my trailer hitch was loose so I just tightened it up to the spec and never thought about it then when the recall came out for the front sprocket, I took it in and had that done and the dealer said I didn’t have any adjusting blocks to adjust the ax, very interesting never had a problem with my belt misalignment but anyway, we got that all taken care of but for sure do you want to check everything before you have the problem take care.

Thank goodness it was "not as bad" as the breakdown on Rt 66 last year! So glad you could get it fixed yourself! It's always a great feeling to be able to get yourself out of jam and not disrupting your trip. Well, I certainly learned something. I have an annual maintenance routine for my Mini Mate trailer, as well as a pre-tow routine to verify the trailer is secure, but I have never included a check of the hitch ball nut. This video is a valuable lesson, so thank you, John 😁👍

Hi John and Miriam, thank you for sharing your adventures with us. If I can make a suggestion, a heavy duty spring washer between the nut and the tow bar would
most certainly prevent the tow bar from loosening up. I discovered this when the same thing happened to me whilst towing a boat some years ago.
    Greetings from OZ

John, the wrench you used is fine for the moment, those hitch ball nuts need to be torqued to a specific poundage. Have a shop do that for you, auto body, motor cycle, any shop where a specific torque is needed. They have the tools needed. I have a hitch for my 2700# camper that needed the hitch ball tightened to 600#. Tool cost $800, body shop did it for $20.

Loctite and a pipe wrench or adjustable jaw wrench to hold the top. When you get home you can drill a hole through the bolt below the nut and put a cotter pin in it or goober up the threads or give it a tack weld. Plus you didn’t tighten that near tight enough… you need a 3’ long pipe on that wrench…
