  • I was originally going to release this video around November 9th and it was much shorter. But, what can I say? I love Halo 2 and it deserves the best. In this video I look back on the game that started it all for me, specifically the campaign and how it's story is still one of my all-time favourites ever in gaming, the influences that might've sparked it's creation and the massive impact it's had over a decade since it released. Nostalgia is inbound.
Also, chuck me a follow on Twitter! You wouldn't... You're way scared @LaperLarden.

Halo 2 was where the Halo franchise went from being a self-contained sci-fi game to being an epic to rival that of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. The universe in general is expanded so much upon in Halo 2, with massive factions that backstab and fight each other over ancient superweapons for the literal fate of the universe, with our main protagonists at the center of it all going through their own personal stories of questioning and redemption. The only other game that really come close to the same vibe of literally playing an epic is maybe Half Life 2 considering Anti-Citizen One and onward.

Halo 2 is definitely the game that made 12 year old me realize video games could be so much more than just a game. I was so happy to finally convince my mom to get an ‘M’ game. But soon after I got very sick and missed the next 7 months of middle school. It was a painful experience, physically, mentally, and emotionally, and day to day life was genuinely traumatizing. This was early 2005, so there was no UA-cam, no streaming shows, and reading hurt my eyes at that time, as did basically any real source of light. Basically, I had very little to look forward to when I woke up in the morning and a lot to dread. The short time I could play Halo 2 in my darkened living room each day meant the world to me, for most the same reasons as you described so well. I could play it then talk about the characters with my family because it was a real story not some BS campaign so many shooters throw together. When my friends would visit after school, we’d play multiplayer. I was a screenlooker, admittedly, but I was going through hell so I sometimes got away with it. And the music… This comment would be an essay if I fully explained how much Marty’s music means to me to this day. Halo 2 is far and away the most nostalgic I could ever be for any piece of media and I couldn’t be happier to have such strong memories about such an amazing game.

Been playing Halo since 2001; I'm an OG fan. Halo 2 is still the greatest in the series for me. I think Halo 2 is still the golden standard in shooter campaigns and can even make the argument that it's the golden standard of storytelling for all gaming genres. It really became the Star Wars of the gaming space and changed the way the public viewed gaming back in the day. It's impact was that strong. I'm fanboying but idgaf lol the GOAT for me.

but as time went on and my brother and I completed our 2nd, our 3rd, our 4th playthroughs, the Arbiter's storyline started appealing more & more to the point where I'm almost as-attached to his character as I am to Chief's.

I have odd feelings when it comes to Halo 2. They are my earliest memories of experiencing Halo, but they're also linked to a great tragedy in my life. My earlier, most vivid memories were of the Malta being destroyed. As a kid, it was so dark and terrifying, I felt helpless in the face of such death. It was chilling, it was technically amazing. I never owned an Xbox, it was only until I was old enough to be able to save at least little bit of money at the age of 13 that I managed to buy and Xbox 360 and finally owned a halo game (Halo 3).
So I only got to play Halo 2 at a friend's house, his name was Quincy. I had abusive parents, he was an orphan(he was raised by his grandmother, his parents died as junkies). We were both troubled kids and were sent to a special school for the violent, out of control kids. But we were close and I would come over once in a while to hang out and play video games, most notably Halo 2. I never finished it at his place though, it would be years later (after the release of Halo 3) that I finally finished Halo 2. As we grew older, we went our seperate ways and lost contact with each other. It would be years later when I was 18, that I would learn that he died.
When I was told by a person I met by chance in the subway (we went to the same school for troubled children), he had been dead for a year and a half. I had decided at a certain point that I wanted more out of life than just violence and anger and I tried to make something of myself (I was one of two out of 22 children that was allowed to go to a "normal" school after surviving that one. 31 years old now, failed miserably) but he fell into the world of drugs and gang bullshit. He got shot at the age of sixteen with two bullets in the neck and apparently his last words were: "I got shot? Is it real?" That shook my life. Taught me death and how close it really is. Taught me reality. Taught me truth. Tore me down a spiral of depression where I debated the utility of empathy.
I am a father now (sadly, still an alcoholic since the age of 22) and have a wife and we recently played Halo 2 on my PC through Nucleus COOP but playing Halo 2 brings back the memories. Memories of Quincy and the tragedy of his life. I'm honestly tearing up as I write this. But thankfully, I can still enjoy Halo 2 and I can't wait to have my son witness the destruction of the Malta, as fucked up as that sounds, determined to make sure he never gets lost as we did. Also, I'm dutch and this all happened in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

While I may never had experienced the revelation on what the halo rings actually did, the horror of encountering the Flood for the first time in 343 Guilty Spark, or even the heart pounding escape in the final mission, Halo 2 cemented itself as my favorite game in the series of all time, hell cementing the series as my all time favorite in gaming.

Thank you for providing a great retrospective on a classic like Halo 2!
During my childhood, I got this game with my Crystal limited edition original Xbox back in late 2004. Had an absolute blast playing this game. I never got to experience the online component of this game, only played coop/local multi with friends when they came over, so I played this game's single-player a lot.
I have such vivid memories of this game and they purely came from the campaign itself. Seeing the journeys of both the Master Chief and Arbiter in this game, for me will always remain one of the best campaign experiences in any game. Outskirts/Metropolis I would always spend hours on, replaying them to see if I could find something new to do, like finding a new shortcut or killing a specific group of enemies a different way. More specifically, at the end of the Metropolis level I would always see if I could aggro the elites in the Scarab into pulling out there swords.
Then a massive swing after Metropolis hits us. Instead of playing the Master Chief, we are playing as this elite we have seen in the introduction cutscene to Halo 2. I won't lie, as a kid I was always scared in playing the Arbiter missions, mainly because most of his missions you are playing alone, and mostly against really terrifying enemies such as a flood, or the rebel elite faction (I always thought these guys looked super freaky). Most of the first half to Master Chiefs campaign you play alongside with help with either marines or ODST soldiers, its not until pretty much one mission in High Charity we are pretty much alone for the whole mission playing as Chief. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed Arbiter's campaign, and really like how you end the game playing as Arbiter.
My favorite moments of Halo 2's campaign are definitely late game, either on Chiefs' journey in Delta Halo/Regret and Arbiter Uprising/Great Journey. I think those two missions which directly continue the journey of our two main characters are two of the best experiences in the game. Playing as Chief and playing alongside the ODSTs in Delta Halo was a fantastic experience, and I would always do my best to try and keep all my marine help alive for their missions. In Regret, I would always bring the marines as best as I could on the gondola and even to try and fight Regret at the end but man those two missions look absolutely phenomenal. The game itself looks amazing, and like you said has many backdrops which look fantastic but seeing the way the world of Delta Halo is crafted is simply amazing. When I got around to playing the remake I was in absolute awe seeing the underwater sections of Regret because we could never really see what was truly down there amidst the ruins.
I will always treasure this game, and for me still remains the best Halo game ever made. Nostalgia or not, this game still holds up and I can always pick it up and replay it. The only other shooters that I can do that with now, is Call Of Duty Black Ops 1 and the original Modern Warfare 2, and those games came out years later on a different generation of consoles. Halo 2 is and still remains one of the best shooters ever made and the story is one of the best stories in a shooter of its time.

We played through halos reach through four on old faithful 360 but we didn't have halo 2. And I remember that day when me and my dad went and bought it. As I get older and older, I’ve realized just how incredible Halo 2 is, and how big of an impact it had on who I am and what I love. Everything you said in your video I agree with 100%. I started with Halo 1 in same way.. That Christmas I got an Xbox with a duke controller.
We rode out bikes down the street with an Xbox in our School bags. Going to friends houses to system link Halo 1. When 2 came out we were still doing the same.
Everyone still had dial up. So I eventually worked out how to bridge our laptop to the Xbox and got Xbox live going. Red or yellow connection was standard but I was always going back for more.
Really appreciate your Australian take on Halo. Being from the same country makes it so much more relatable.
Can't wait for the next one. 👍👍 Also thanks to Marty, otherwise I would have missed every upload!

'Revolutionary' is the only real way to describe Halo 2's impact on gaming after CE. Creating a more intriguing campaign and introducing online matchmaking to the world are perhaps its most important aspects.
That being said, it's not perfect (no game ever is). I feel like the campaign could've been even better if there were a few more missions to help expand the characters more. There was also the main problem with how the sandbox functioned in multiplayer. The BR ended up vastly overshadowing the rest of the weapons and button combos broke the game more than helped it at times (although there is something to be said about it creating a skill gap).
Still, it ended up being a solid middle game of a trilogy in both campaign and multiplayer compared to Halo 5 (which, imo, holds up really well in multiplayer but falls flat in the campaign).
Btw, are you a fan of 'Rise of the Spartans'? I recognized the track at 11:55 as being from Arbiter617's perhaps most important work

That track was originally used in the Halo Legends anime short called the Duel, but you're right, I definitely lowkey associate it with Rise of the Spartans as well. Used to love that series when I was a kid.

The past few years have treated us with excellent analyses on series, movies and videogames. I’m looking forward to more of your channel. Great video! By the way, what is the song that plays at the start of the “I know what the ladies like section”? It’s obviously a cover and sounds really good. (Nvm, got it. It’s the Sacred Icon Suite 2 from Halo Legends)

I could talk about the menu of Halo 2 for weeks. I wish we had the original main menu and the H2 era Bungie logo popping in MCC edition. If you ever run into a mate or an acquaintance who has not been introduced to Halo 2 (heretic), I would highly recommend asking them what they think of the OG Xbox menu before playing the game, and then asking the same question after they've completed the campaign. That is, if you still have a functioning OG Xbox (I need to repair mine).
It is difficult to phrase it, but this menu is not just a vehicle for storytelling. It also sets the setting and asks questions of the player (with its superb blend of audio and visuals) and challenges their expectations, and not like Star Wars the Last Jedi. It already hints that this game might not just be another "run and shoot" stereotypical FPS, like it was discussed in the video. However, once you've played the game, the menu can fill a different purpose. It amplifies the emotional weight of the story and adds that somber touch that is alluded to in this video. In a way, it allows you to digest what you just experienced in a rather unique way.
I think it's safe to say that very few games have been able to innovate like this with their menu screens and do it so successfully. It is an excellent case-study, although I have to admit I am hopelessly biased. And I do have to mention Call of Duty Black Ops in the same breath regarding innovative main menus, but that's for different reasons and an entirely different story. I genuinely wonder if they took some inspiration from Halo for that.
Excellent video btw, sorry for the rant. I am genuinely at a loss for words how few games today are able to tell a story as well the games of this era. I do not want loot boxes, skins or emotes, I want stories that are interactive and immersive.

That's pretty neat how Halo 2 was your first Halo game because it was the same with me. At the time I didn't own an Xbox but my uncle did who had Halo 2 and it too blew my mind with everything you said and also because it was what introduced to online multiplayer. Beforehand I didn't know that existed 😅. I also didn't play Halo CE, and wouldn't until the MCC, but I did like how Halo 2 was very friendly to new players with how the story catches you up in the opening cinematics.

Funny how everyone seems to have been introduced to Halo by a friend/family. Mine was combat evolved in 2002 by my cousin at a video arcade. I vividly remember the system link match we played on blood gulch and needing more. That convinced me to save up money by mowing lawns and buy an Xbox. So my hype level was through the roof when halo 2 was announced.

Another excellent video, great job man. Superb writing and pacing once again. Honestly have 0 criticism for this one, it did everything it needed to do and did it well. I specifically liked how you brought up that triangle of characters dynamic. I never thought of including Tartarus when thinking about the character development of Halo 2, so after hearing your explanation it made me understand more how deep Halo 2's writing can be. Also glad to report I didn't get distracted by the VHS effect this time lol, glad you toned it back a bit (whether intentional or not) but still kept your 80's VHS vibe.

Personally, I think 343's art direction could never stand up to classic Bungie. Key to this is their handling of the Anniversary graphics in the flood missions. I also consider the Flood with rockets and shotguns just as dangerous as the Jackal Snipers, if not more. Aside from my personal gripes, I am in agreement. Halo 2 is probably the best game in the series.

    • @TheRedKing247
      @TheRedKing247 2 роки тому

Their art direction in the flood levels was fantastic, what are you smoking? Are you confusing what Saber Interactive did with HCEA with Halo 2 Anniversary?

Then clearly, you didn't notice the most obvious one: the glass floor should have fog in it while the heretics fight the flood, but in anniversary graphics, that fog is gone, ditching the mystery that was intentional with the original game.

    • @LilRick96
      @LilRick96 Рік тому

@@cakeboss4194 that's how I was introduced to the flood, since Halo 2 was my first halo. At 7 years old, that scene through the glass floor where you cannot see the flood due to the fog. Hearing only their screams, gurgling, punching and swiping. While hearing the heretics gun fire and screams as they are getting slaughtered set the horror aspect up perfectly. You can't see shit, but the fear was instilled immediately in me but I would keep resetting the checkpoint to watch it over and over again. Halo 2 did the flood the best in the series for me. The atmosphere, they were the most aggressive and fast as hell and were legit the most creepy. So seeing H2A take away the horror atmosphere was a major let down and neutered the experience

First time I played Halo was in 2019, on MCC. Played through all titles over a couple of months, and as I somewhat immersed myself in the fandom I was surprised to see that Halo 3 seemed to be the favorite child. In my view, then and now, Halo 2 stands head and shoulders over all the other games in the franchise. Maybe the multiplayer isn't as good as some of the other titles, but my gosh the story is so much better than all the rest.
