Our Cathy is a magnificent athlete and a great person. So much pressure. An easy win as she glided effortlessly past the also rans. Our best moment in sport in my opinion. What an example she is for everyone and, especially, her fellow aborigines. Cathy is much loved and admired. Humility abundant from this world champion. She said she felt inferior as a kid. As she showed it is what is inside that matters. Everybody looks up to Cathy and adores her manner. There`s something about Cathy Freeman.
A recent vote by readers of The Guardian saw this easily declared as Australia's Greatest Sporting Moment. Was there any every doubt? Cathy was a great champion, and was and remains a truly wonderful person.
Perhaps my television was turned up louder than my computer. However, I remember the crowd just about blew the roof off the stadium in that final 50 metres.
If you listen to this in Full HD with good headphones (FF 4 mins on: ua-cam.com/video/KBjuhq__XPk/v-deo.html) it DOES sound like the roof was about to blow.

One of the greatest individual feats by an Australian athlete at any point in history. Have a look at the sheer relief on her face when she crosses the line. The weight of a nation was on her. Marvellous stuff
Understandably couldn’t get a ticket (attended for her semi), so went to Darling Harbour. Big screens in the open, thousands & thousands of people. From the moment the gun went the entire crowd yelled and screamed as if that was powering Cathy. The exhortations, screaming and yelling went for the 40 seconds of the race, then an eruption of simultaneous joy from many thousands when she won. Was looking for this with Bruce commentary... already commented on this 5 years ago... awk... like the guy too much maybe... great memories again watching this!!
Still gives me goosebumps
Man another beutyful win from Cath and a great call out to Bruce two magnificent Aussies wow what a combo makes you proud to be a Aussie ❤️🇦🇺
I get goose bumps every time I watch this
Our Cathy is a magnificent athlete and a great person.
WOW.. I watched it live and it was WOW…and it still is…WOW..
A recent vote by readers of The Guardian saw this easily declared as Australia's Greatest Sporting Moment. Was there any every doubt? Cathy was a great champion, and was and remains a truly wonderful person.
Bruce is the greatest sports caller of all time
Kris Mannix Couldn't agree more
Kris Mannix Absolutely
Won't be calling the boxing anytime soon, sport's commentator that doesn't rate boxing.
Wouldn't say the greatest of all time, could be in the top 20 in Australia, but his voice and over the top excitement and whining kill it for me,,.
Deliberately searched for the Aussie commentary. Loved hearing the crowd's cheering lift at 0:53 and then again at 0:56.
Still gets me all these years later
Perhaps my television was turned up louder than my computer. However, I remember the crowd just about blew the roof off the stadium in that final 50 metres.
If you listen to this in Full HD with good headphones (FF 4 mins on: ua-cam.com/video/KBjuhq__XPk/v-deo.html) it DOES sound like the roof was about to blow.
"What a relief" - Raelene Boyle
Definitely one of the best moments in Australia sport. At that time i was in Sydney at circular key watching Cathy run on the big screen memories right there.
Still gives you goosebumps watching this
A race that cannot be erased from my memory...
Thank you so much Cathie. I was working in Timor during the Olympics l had a cheap short wave radio and I was lucky enough to hear you win. I was working in a Catholic institution at the time and they thought I’d gone mad with my jubilation
You made the whole of Australia SO proud. My heart still bursts with pride
Do You realise you are one in 7 billion to make us so proud to be Australian
May you have a long and happy life. You should have gone into politics and advanced our cause. You clearly had the potential
With much love
Pone in7billion
Cathy was perfect. I will never forget… Bruce was amazing …. Their best commentary to a perfect race. Aussie heroes both but Cathy rocks. Am proud to an Australian…. Cathy please run for PM
Goosebumps every time! The whole country loves Cathy so much ❤
Our Cathy did us all proud Champion then Champion in 2023.
I was at that race and was screaming my lungs crazy for Cathy! So emotional. And I’m a kiwi!!!!
One of the greatest individual feats by an Australian athlete at any point in history. Have a look at the sheer relief on her face when she crosses the line. The weight of a nation was on her. Marvellous stuff
Still brings tears to the eyes. What a run, what a race call
2021 and was yelling Go Cathy Go Cathy just like On The Day , Fantastic !
One of the great sporting moments in my life, even if not at the actual stadium.
To hear the roar of 100,000 Australians cheering Cathy all the way home, still gives me goosebumps and chills of joy. What a night.
I cried like a baby watching this......its phenomenal!!!!!
Brings a tear to my eye every time I watch this!!!
I can remember watching shouting in my lounge room like it was yesterday me and my wife, memorable moment
Every time I watch this race I cry, I never forget that year that day in Sydney 2000 the call of Bruce Mcavaney reverberates in my ear " what a legend what a champion
