Im so glad i put this video up. I must say this movie and guy changed my life and perspective of jazz for life. Other people my age think its boring.....I find it intriguing.😊 rest in peace gene!!!
Thank you Very Much for posting the Movie, and I'm sure Gene Krupa is looking down Smiling 🥁🥁🥁 I've always wanted to see this movie but could never find it,and I just saw it for the first time It was Awesome ! 🥁🥁🥁🎶🎵🎶🎶
Thanks for posting this flick. I think Krupa was the best drummer ever... followed by Buddy Rich, who is also fantastic... as well as Shelly Mann. But, Gene has an edge that is unbelievable to my ear. I'm 81 years old and I still love to hear this music from my childhood, youth and young adulthood.
Saw this movie back in 74, as a young man of 14 just learning to play the drums it completely blew me away and gave me lots of inspiration to be a crazy passionate drummer (and i am) I only saw it that one time and was never shown on TV again. I have spent the last forty three years searching for this film and now thanks to you i can finally relive those old memories again! Thank you thank you thank you for posting this gem!
I'm ashamed to say as a drummer now that I'm 76 I had never seen this great movie based on the life of legendary drummer Gene Krupa.Sal Mineo did a great job playing his life Evangelist and former Leslie West Vagrants Drummer Roger Mansour
Great movie about the legendary Gene Krupa! Sal Mineo was an extraordinary actor, two times Oscar nominee. He was so into Krupas character, studied the body language as well as the drum rudiments - awesome! Also loved his work with James Dean and Natalie Wood in "Rebel without a cause". His early death in the 70s was really tragic!
Gene Krupa was a friend of mine, a great artist and a great teacher. I only wish that they would have put more effort into his musical history rather than his mistakes as a human being. Because that impacted his wife for the last 30 years. He was a musician and in my mind there was no one that could compare to his Talent. Sincerely, JW Miller 🥁
Mr. Miller, Bless you sharing & you're absolutely correct as to why must the negative be emphasized vs mostly good, clearly his talent being the good. Such is Hollywood, all drama n lack of thought for others. However, know that many do remember him despite the age difference & so treasure your beloved friends worth as a very talented good human being. Peace be with you. 😊
I have an autographed photo from the 400 club.. It was my father's. a photographer would go around the club taking photos+ an autograph with members of the band. I cherish it.
I grew up with Gene Krupa’s music resounding in my ears virtually from the day I was born and learned to appreciate his skill and artistry thanks to my father and his jazz musician brother. I was even allowed, occasionally, to use my dad’s brushes! I knew nothing of his ‘mistakes as a human being’ I just appreciated his amazing talent and still do.
This is the video that inspired John Bonham and Neil Peart Stewart Copeland and a slew of others including Buddy Rich who said of him "the inspiration for every big-name drummer in the business". He inspired me to learn jazz and swing music!
Oh -- too bad he didn't live long enough to reach his potential. Not sure he was killed by "gay haters." Much research has been done and the consensus is that he was stabbed to death by a random thug -- who was released from prison in the 90s. Which is awful, awful, awful. The thing about Sal Mineo? He wasn't afraid to be naked -- he revealed everything when he was on screen. What a talent. What a man. What a fucking tragedy.
What an awesome movie, one of kind, he and buddy Rich were just amazing. Sol Mineo was great , good looking and perfect for the part. Thank you Sol Mineo and all the Big Band Greats.
Let's not forget what else this movie showcased. A walk away from addiction and recovery of ones self. Never had to fight addiction but I salute those who have and won. Anyone who tells you people can't get side tracked by weed are full of bull. Saw friends go that way and I ran as fast as I could in the other direction. And yes, I indulged myself.
In Gene's case, I gather he got branded an "addict" for smoking one joint. Hypocritical nonsense from the government. Cannabis is a sacred herb, for a number of reasons, and is not in and of itself "addictive."
I AM WATCHING THE GENE KRUPA STORY. - FABULOUS - SAL MINEO IS SO RIGHT FOR THIS PART - DON’T KNOW (YET) about smoking weed. I KNOW IT AS (grass). MY STORY IS THAT “WEED” WAS THE HARDESR “drug” TO GIVE YP - GOD WILLING I WILL BE 34 YEARS CLEAN AND SOBER - NOW BACK TO THE MOVIE………..
I saw this movie when it first came out. I was 19 and a beginning drummer. A few years earlier I saw Krupa at a Saturday afternoon matinee in Detroit. I sat close to the stage. He was about 15 feet away playing like a wild man, chomping his gum. His drum set had blue and green sparkely glitter on the sides. A Coke cost $.25 which was a $.20 increase from usual. I was amassed! At the time I didn't think much of Sal Mineo's performance of my hero but he's OK now - I guess.
The drummer does make all the difference in a band. I'm a bass player and rely on my drummer brothers (and sisters) to be in the pocket all night. A bad drummer ruins the whole vibe. But when a band has that pocket it's almost orgasmic. Krupa had it in spades. Great old flick.
drummer here, i agree 100%. thought id share a joke that a guitarist told me. why do bands have drummers? so the bass player has someone to talk to.... hope this brings a smile!
An epic performance by Sal...he played the shit outta those drums, saw this when I was a kid, dug it, now am 70 and still dug it, great music and musicians, and Gene Krupa was the man on the skins.....
2020...the legend lives on. Our children and grandchildren, along with generations to come, need to see this. Anyone who hasn't is not enjoying life to its full potential.
Thanks for the upload. I just gave away my 78 collection of Krupa's records to a library. I came across this film serendipitously. Sal Mineo's performance was very impressive. He just just 20 when he made this film.

I am 79 ..and when I first saw Gene Krupa drumming on t.v. as a teenager..I always wanted to be a DRUMMER. You're not going to find an actor who can also play drums that well. I was watching him real close. He wasn't faking it. I think Krupa was still alive when this was made. That's pretty unusual. Most of these kinds of movies are made after someone is long gone. Thanks for the upload.
I have to correct myself. I found out that the drums that we hear in the movie were actually played by Gene Krupa and that Sal Mineo worked with Krupa for two years to be able to "fake it" nearly impeccably. For more info about Gene Krupa check out the documentary narrated by Steve Allen.
Cole Porter was alive when the biopic "Night and Day" was made in 1947 with Cary Grant. The story goes that at the film's premiere, Porter was asked how much of the film was accurate. "Oh, only about 10 percent, maybe," he said. "But who cares?? Cary Grant played me!!"
What a great story of choice. Life was not so simple back then, boy I had no idea how great he really was but I knew he was great. And Sal playing him did a Fantastic job..glad I was researching today and came across this great movie..🌈
I loved this film, the Life-Story and Acting (etc) were superb; I’d never heard of this great-musician - but he’s now in My Heart. Thank-You So Much for posting this!
I remember watching this movie when I was a little girl 👧, another movie I remember watching is the five pennies. The story about Red Nichols who was also in the Gene Krupa movie. Two great movies.
Mineo is incredible here. You can lipsync and portray a professional songbird, but it takes real talent to imitate a style as unique as Krupa's. Great music throughout, especially with Krupa himself recreating the works himself, and so good to hear Anita O'Day, Red Nichols, etc. if only for short bits. James Darren had a pretty good singing career, although I think now he's been overshadowed by so many other bigger names of his generation. But he's also had a decent tv career - I remember him especially from THE TIME TUNNEL.
James Darren "overshadowed" as a singer by his brother, Bobby. Sal was very talented, and a sad ending for his life, also. Good to see this film again, Krupa still one of the best, i believe Keith Moon took inspiration from his style.
An absolutely marvelous video about Gene Krupa's talent on drums. He was the very best years ago. This video brings back how very popular Krupa was and Sal Mineo was impressive in his role as Krupa.
Thank you for this movie. It was so sweet & moving. When I was as young as 3 & 4 years old he played his records, & he played until his 70s. I adored my father, and he gave me the same appreciation for music.
I have watched this movie hundreds of times since I met Gene Krupa in April of 1962 because of my handicap, my boss figured that if I could play drums it wouldn't touch other people to purchase drums after the drum battle with Jurupa I had the Good Fortune of doing that a couple times a year when Gene would rotate through town on tour between 1962 through 1966 it was really a great opportunity and a great education jwm.❤

Sadly due to Sal’s sexual preference he was murdered in an alleyway by gay haters ! A tragic loss for such a beautiful, talented man 🙏
No proof it was a gay hater involved in his murder. Please don't spread misinformation. He never came out as gay either and enjoyed his bisexuality up to his last years. Read the bio, do some research
This is the movie that got me started in Drummers outside of Rock. What a fantastic journey it has been. I have the movie on VHS but I need to transfer to DVD. Thanks! Krupa has always been my fav with Max Roach and Blakely as well as Rich. There are so many though...Chick Webb, thank you also :-)
What Mama couldn't get through her head was that GOD works in some very mysterious ways. Gene's vocation was behind a set of drums not leading a religious congregation in prayer.
Just a terrific movie. Loved Susan Kohner in it as well. Susan Oliver was a perfect wicked woman. Total fiction, but that's what it was all about then -- and now. Sal Mineo rocks!
Thank you for this upload. Never saw this movie before, but it's great. Sal Mineo did a brilliant performance, which also makes me wonder if he did some of the actual drumming. Great period piece highlighting the big band swing era.
I apologize and need to mention that this film is really about Sal and his drumming that tells a story. Sal is a ripper and very few drummers come close to his abilities in the 50s.
“Krupa himself played the drums on the soundtrack for the film, and for the sequences in which Mineo, as Gene, plays the drums.” - Wikipedia No one but Krupa is Krupa. 🙂
Sal did a wonderful job showcasing his drum acting ability -- especially since Gene Krupa actually played the drums for the movie. Even during the rock era, I always thought Gene Krupa was the best and most creative drummer who put on a show.
Great movie, great drummer! My husband grew up in the same neighborhood where Krupa had a house in Yonkers in the 50s and 60s and used to go over to his house to watch and listen to him practice all the time. Because of that, my husband became a fine percussionist with a great sense of rhythm as well! My husband remembers seeing Krupa playing in dives on W. 42nd St. when he had hit rock bottom and told me Krupa really looked and was pathetic towards the end. Sad ending. And very sad ending to the late great Sal Mineo's life when he was murdered at such a young age. RIP to both. Susan Kohner was very beautiful and did a great job as well along with James Darrin whom I always thought looked great in a tux...so handsome! "And the beat goes on"...Sonny and Cher. Thanks for sharing~
My mother was born in 1904 in south Chicago. Illinois She went to immaculate conception grammar school with gene krupa She said he continuously was drumming on his desk with a pencil and was hollered at by the nuns all the time
Thinking of all the instruments I have and used to play well, Guitars (about 30 of them) Keyboards (Hammond B3 with a Leslie Cabinet, Trumpet, Flutes, Mandolins, Steel Dobro, and three sets of Drums. The reason I'm telling you this? I now can only play Drums as I have MS with exception of my left foot and leg, they do not have strength to lift and therefore not well on the Hi-Hat, So I close or have them loose. Krupa was an inspiration to the likes of many great drummers.....What a Great UpLoad.....
Ave maria when I hear it I think a sinka pated beat yeah man yeah Somebody once said if you go to sleep thinking of a beat and you wake and you still thinking of a beat YOU ARE DRUMMER will Mr Kruppa Thank You Thank you for guidence and your help your eminent fan Shorty Carter
There is a clip on UA-cam: "Jammin with Gene Krupa" It shows he and Sal Mineo meeting, and an initial rehearsal for the movie. It was important that Mineo's work be closely choreographed to make it realistic, as the drumming was performed by Krupa both for the soundtrack album and the movie itself.
I saw a class picture with gene krupa and my mother a d he sat around the middle but sitting sideways looking sort of to his left His dark hair really stood out and my mother said he was awfully good looking
My, how the values of the American public have changed. Krupa was unjustly stigmatized, true, but there are many celebrities today who are admired precisely for being addicts!
Im so glad i put this video up. I must say this movie and guy changed my life and perspective of jazz for life. Other people my age think its boring.....I find it intriguing.😊 rest in peace gene!!!

Len Gasparini 😍😍
I thought Mineo was terrific in the early scene where he's explaining the origins of drumming to his dad. The look on Sal's face is great acting...

Boogie Boogie Booooogie! He opened my ears alooong time ago.
I apologize and need to mention that this film is really about Sal and his drumming that tells a story. Sal is a ripper and very few drummers come close to his abilities in the 50s.
"snow again junior, I didn't quite get your drift"....gonna have to remember that one :)
Yeah, that was a great line, right? Loved it.
Really good movie! The end was touching as well.
Eh, Not bad for a New York City kid playin' a Chi Town kid! Here's to Gene n Sal, Cheers! 😎
Wow, Sal Mineo was brilliant in this ❤
SAL WAS FANTASTIC!!!
Anita O'Day doing "memories of you" awesome.
gene krupa the first wild man of drums wat a life..!
It's crazy how 2 cast members from this film have such huge roles in Star Trek. Celia Lovsky and Susan Oliver
“Krupa himself played the drums on the soundtrack for the film, and for the sequences in which Mineo, as Gene, plays the drums.” - Wikipedia No one but Krupa is Krupa. 🙂
You can see a youtube video of them both playing drums side by by side .. sal was very goood
Go Gene Go forever. Saw him on an old Playboy After Dark episode. Hefner and the young hipsters quickly became fans.
Sal Mineo is so handsome 💓💓💓
I must say Bravo 👏🏼 he really lit 🔥 up the movie 🎥 for me ❤️
Thanks for this!!!!
Wow... I Love, The Movie... awesome cast...
So interesting to read your reply. Pretty wow!
James Darren is still handsome!
RIP James Darren, you were so handsome in this. I adored his "Let there be love" rendition in this movie (starts at 6:20)
My mother was born in 1904 in south Chicago. Illinois
She went to immaculate conception grammar school with gene krupa
She said he continuously was drumming on his desk with a pencil and was hollered at by the nuns all the time
dian kreczmer )
dian kreczmer 😳😳😳
what a cool story thanks for sharing!
Wonderful story!
Immaculate conception still there still a school ❤
I was honored to know his brother Julius Krupa❤️
Thinking of all the instruments I have and used to play well, Guitars (about 30 of them) Keyboards (Hammond B3 with a Leslie Cabinet, Trumpet, Flutes, Mandolins, Steel Dobro, and three sets of Drums. The reason I'm telling you this? I now can only play Drums as I have MS with exception of my left foot and leg, they do not have strength to lift and therefore not well on the Hi-Hat, So I close or have them loose. Krupa was an inspiration to the likes of many great drummers.....What a Great UpLoad.....
May God give you strength, brother.
New to me, thank u, I see why u like him, and music.
Gracias por subir esta película, soñaba con verla de nuevo genial!!!
Very good acting
I saw a class picture with gene krupa and my mother a d he sat around the middle but sitting sideways looking sort of to his left
His dark hair really stood out and my mother said he was awfully good looking
My, how the values of the American public have changed. Krupa was unjustly stigmatized, true, but there are many celebrities today who are admired precisely for being addicts!
