Claudette Colbert was a true star! Never a bad movie. She had a unique quality, maybe it was the voice that made her so mesmerizing, as her overall look and style never changed. She was old Hollywood at it's best. Born to be on the Silver Screen.
I was thinking in one of the scenes with her unconscious how truly beautiful she was. What a complexion. Amazing in some ways when you consider the limited selections in lighting effects back then. Kudos to those responsible for this type of effect.

I couldn’t agree more that these black-and-white Classics are incredible. I’ve tapped into many of them now on my iPad and I am thoroughly enjoying them I used to be a movie go at the cinema or theater when I was younger but movies have really changed a lot lost my interest in so many of them yes, of course from time to time there are some good ones that come out, but these black and whites cannot be compared to those films. love the actors actresses of these classics
I agree. I'm hooked on them. And I've rediscovered one of the greatest actors who ever lived, Charles Laughton. He makes the others, famous actors, stars whereas he's a genius actor.

Nice acting, and a good story plot. I thought Ms. Colbert, Mr. Ameche, and Mr. Cummings played their parts extremely well. Great actors as they, never disappoint. And I was good to see "Perry Mason" as the Police Detective.
I have watched this movie at least 10x. Claudette always give her all, be it comedy,drama,noir. Her eyes have so much depth, expression,emotion and passion. Thank you for posting!😊
I am 68, and I remember what was concidered "Traveling Clothes". No one woukd have dreamed of stepping outside their front door ( or even stay around the house) the way the majority of people dress 2day)...even the Ho-bo's living along the railroad tracks dressed better.
@leilal8053....Remember when people would "dress up" to go to church and to go to a major league baseball game or go to the movies? Look at some old T.V. footage of major league baseball games from the 40's & 50's and probably into the 60's. The men mostly wore suits and they all wore nice hats...no baseball hats... and the ladies wore dresses. And yes, even going to the grocery store we put on clean clothes and looked decent. Oh, yes...how many movies have we watched where even the hobo's wore some kind of coat and a tie...they still had a little bit of class...!! Not so today....civility is non-existent in so many places. Sad...real sad.
Oh la. How my sisters and I dressed up for flights! Plus a menu: steak or chicken. In porcelain plates. With real cutlery. And a hot towel before and after. In COACH.
I agree and I say it all the time. My daily dressing would be pointed directly at WW2 era and when I go out everyday to Walmart, Aldi's, corner store ...anywhere I am always dressed . In other words, I look as if I walked out of the 1940s daily and folks look surprised. Folks give comments like "are you going to church, you look so dressed up?". I tell them, this is how I dress everyday. Folks now of days wanna be in pajamas all day some. And if they dress , they consider that work clothes or "dressing up". I am 37 and I can't fathom just walking out with pajamas.

@@sohara....RD Laing was very, very good in his time. Too good in 1 way. My little sister read my books that were written by him, and she has been faking mental illness ever since. To some extent this constant act has caused her to actually believe it all and develope a truly warped mind, and she used it to torture my dad for 50 years. But I watched her develope her act, so I knew what her influences were. Of course she always did have psychopathic and manipulative tendencies, but in watching her develope this act, it was very easy to see what was influenced by what. It all started with my dad falsely accusing my mum of being schizophrenic, so of course I started reading up on that. And my sister has being faking it ever since, but just the parts that suit her, when they suit her. Otherwise she is fine. She's just extraordinarily selfish and greedy, and as entitled as can be. She manipulated hundreds of thousands of $ from my dad. But Laing had an understanding that was ahead of his time. I imagine he is gone now, but he has my respect for bringing clarity to the public at a time when nobody else I'm aware of had done so. There was only Reich, Freud, and Freud's protege, whose name escapes me at the moment, even though he's very well known. Reich and Freud were both full of crazy ideas, and Freud's protege had a few too. So Laing was a real breath of fresh air. Some truth at last! He helped me a lot in learning to understand my dysfunctional family, and he brought the public's understanding of mental illness ahead by huge leaps and bounds. I believe he influenced a great many people, doctors and lay people.
I've always adored Claudette Colbert as a fantastic actress, and she was sooo pretty! I liked Bob Cummings, Don Ameche, and Raymond Burr was so young and good-looking in his pre-Perry Mason days! (I think he was still quite attractive when he was on the Perry Mason shows, too, however!) Great film!!! Love it!!!

Never cared that much for Don ameche but very affective in this always liked Robert Cummings in every movie I've seen him in and of course Bob Cummings show I've always liked Raymond Burr good actor as a bad guy in earlier movies and of course Perry Mason always a VC very attractive man he had those big expressive penetrating eyes most striking

What an outstanding movie! The acting is also great, as well as the costumes and the story. Thanks for uploading this movie and thanks for the good quality! Also, all three main actors are quite suitable for such roles. Watching Miss Brooks in the role of the lover was a pleasure. Three words to describe the movie - creative, exciting and dramatic. For the fans who enjoy such films, I would recommend 'The Lost Moment' (1947)!
I don't know what it is that makes this movie so enjoyable. The characters and dialogue are compelling and the costumes and scenery are wonderful as well. I didn't expect to enjoy this so much. Everyone is comparing it unfavorable to Gaslight but this one is actually more entertaining.
I thought so too….great variety of eccentric characters…loved the subtle unexpected humor woven through. This is one I will be watching often . These old black and whites are so good for insomniacs

@@michaelward9880 Burr was never a big star in any area. He was only a mediocre actor. Very dead pan in every role. Noir was only used in the first of a double bill, to fill space before the real movie that everyone really went to see, and most noirs were crap. The only ones that survived were the very best ones, and they are still nowhere near as good. Their budgets were always low, so everything about them was second class, including some of the acting. That's what distinguished A and B movies. Some crime movies that are really noirs are being called noir now. But noirs were always B+W and did not often have the biggest stars like Claudette Colbert and this male star that plays her husband. For that reason I would not class this as a noir, but rather as a mystery film. There were many very good actors who never managed to reach the A list, or reached it later. A lot of people who had very small roles were actually excellent actors, but they were not highly paid or treated well. And inexplicably there were some terrible actors who did make it to the A list status. (There was no actual official list. That's just a euphemism.) Most actors were type cast and only ever played 1 kind of role. To some extent that still happens unless the actor really works at finding roles with a difference, like Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt have done. But with that, there are inevitably some of their projects that are deemed to be "flops". Burr was lucky, he was able to work a lot because cops and villains were ubiquitous in the crime films that made up the first films in the double bills that every theatre used. It was sort of a "2 for the price of 1" thing. So he worked a lot, and even had 2 long running tv shows that gave him a lot of exposure. He even got a chance on those tv shows to stretch a little bit more, but that still doesn't make him a big star. (In 1 he was a lawyer, and in the other he was a wheelchair bound detective.) Edit: I checked Wikipedia, and I have to modify my opinion. He won a fair number of Emmys and Golden Globes, and had a LOT of nominations for a great many more. His 2 main TV shows were both almost 10 years long, and he was in a LOT of stage plays, noirs, and TV movies. He worked very steadily for his whole life until his death. He was also considered extremely kind and generous by everyone who ever knew him, and he donated TONS of time and money to many good causes. So I can see why some people would consider him a big star, and after all, there is no hard line between who is a star and a big star, so it's a matter of opinion. IMHO, he's still not a big star, because of the type of rut he was cast in, and the resulting lack of breadth and depth of his roles. And because of the lack of recognition of him now. However as I said, whether or not somebody is a "big" star is a matter of opinion. I concede he was a star. But a "big" one? I guess we all have to decide that for ourselves. My opinion of him as a person is very much uplifted by the Wikipedia article! I like him a lot now as a person. And I encourage people to go and read it. It certainly was an eye opener, and my respect for Burr has grown a lot.

Well, it IS a different world in way too many respects and it’s definitely NOT all to the good. Generally speaking people owned much less clothing than many do today. The fact that people consider today’s styles for traveling much more comfortable they are frankly utterly without what then would have been referred to as anything that could qualify as ‘stylish’. Unless of course one is wealthy. Not only have we discarded style, we have become boorish and rude in our public behavior because too many feel entitled to do so. In their minds personal ‘freedom’ allows them to be whatever they chose to be in ANY setting. I think when Rosalind Russell commented at the point in her life where she had observed that humanity was losing it’s sensibility, generally speaking, and that ‘grace’ would disappear she was sadly visionary. What have we ‘allowed’ ourselves to become?
First of all, people in the industrial world are fatter than people right after WWII, so those clothes would not look good on them even if they tried, and would indeed be less comfy. I never wore high heels for instance. And then there's the amount of people: people are generally unhappy because of all the noise, the dirt and the trouble in the world. Workers can be easily replaced, employers are unappreciative and people generally feel worthless. Reduce the number of people and things will change, individuals count again.

Claudette Colbert only made black and white films because she photographed so well in them and - she felt - poorly in colour . After she made Parrish in colour she retired. She appeared in only more production - on TV - over 25 years later.
I far prefer color. No exceptions. The people who claim B+W is better are just pretentious. Color does so much more to give the picture detail, texture, and depth. In 1 word, reality. B+W always looks flat as a pancake and it lacks so much! That's why B+W is rarely ever used now.

I've seen Gaslight at least a dozen times. One of my favorite movies. You have to see how she gets back at him near the end. " are you suggesting this is a knife I hold in my hand? Are you mad my husband?" . Oooo I get the goosebumps just thinking about that scene!
Raymond Burr sometimes known for playing a heavy but turned out to be a fine lawyer as Perry Mason. I always remember him as the white haired killer in Rear Window.

Doctors endorsed them, that should tell you something. Additional though they added more than tobacco in cigs, hundreds of other chemical ingredients which were never disclosed until the late 1980s- 1990s
It’s weird to me that anyone could think inhaling smoke into ur lungs was good for u. They must have known how pollution and smog caused serious illness even back then. The doctors knew, they must have been paid off.

Wow, what a film. Interestingly, this is the second movie from that era I've seen in this past week where the husband is trying to make the woman out to be crazy so he can get away from her. How horrible.
Seriously this ending had me hooked🙌 It all felt like that 1944 movie Gaslight. The narcissistic husband making his wife believe she is crazy by playing mind games with her and getting others agree to tell her the same.
Not so surprising when you see and perhaps immediately recognize the actors. Some who later made more comedies than dramas should perhaps have stuck to drama as they are very believable in this film.
Robert Cummings gives such a smooth performance here.

I remember being a little girl getting dressed up to go eat with my grandparents. The men all had hats and top coats. These movies bring me joy.

Also, all three main actors are quite suitable for such roles. Watching Miss Brooks in the role of the lover was a pleasure. Three words to describe the movie - creative, exciting and dramatic. For the fans who enjoy such films, I would recommend 'The Lost Moment' (1947)!

I don't know what it is that makes this movie so enjoyable. The characters and dialogue are compelling and the costumes and scenery are wonderful as well. I didn't expect to enjoy this so much. Everyone is comparing it unfavorable to Gaslight but this one is actually more entertaining.
I thought so too….great variety of eccentric characters…loved the subtle unexpected humor woven through. This is one I will be watching often . These old black and whites are so good for insomniacs

@@michaelward9880 Burr was never a big star in any area. He was only a mediocre actor. Very dead pan in every role. Noir was only used in the first of a double bill, to fill space before the real movie that everyone really went to see, and most noirs were crap. The only ones that survived were the very best ones, and they are still nowhere near as good.
Their budgets were always low, so everything about them was second class, including some of the acting. That's what distinguished A and B movies. Some crime movies that are really noirs are being called noir now. But noirs were always B+W and did not often have the biggest stars like Claudette Colbert and this male star that plays her husband. For that reason I would not class this as a noir, but rather as a mystery film.
There were many very good actors who never managed to reach the A list, or reached it later. A lot of people who had very small roles were actually excellent actors, but they were not highly paid or treated well. And inexplicably there were some terrible actors who did make it to the A list status. (There was no actual official list. That's just a euphemism.) Most actors were type cast and only ever played 1 kind of role. To some extent that still happens unless the actor really works at finding roles with a difference, like Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt have done. But with that, there are inevitably some of their projects that are deemed to be "flops".
Burr was lucky, he was able to work a lot because cops and villains were ubiquitous in the crime films that made up the first films in the double bills that every theatre used. It was sort of a "2 for the price of 1" thing. So he worked a lot, and even had 2 long running tv shows that gave him a lot of exposure. He even got a chance on those tv shows to stretch a little bit more, but that still doesn't make him a big star. (In 1 he was a lawyer, and in the other he was a wheelchair bound detective.)
Edit: I checked Wikipedia, and I have to modify my opinion. He won a fair number of Emmys and Golden Globes, and had a LOT of nominations for a great many more. His 2 main TV shows were both almost 10 years long, and he was in a LOT of stage plays, noirs, and TV movies. He worked very steadily for his whole life until his death. He was also considered extremely kind and generous by everyone who ever knew him, and he donated TONS of time and money to many good causes.
So I can see why some people would consider him a big star, and after all, there is no hard line between who is a star and a big star, so it's a matter of opinion. IMHO, he's still not a big star, because of the type of rut he was cast in, and the resulting lack of breadth and depth of his roles. And because of the lack of recognition of him now. However as I said, whether or not somebody is a "big" star is a matter of opinion. I concede he was a star. But a "big" one? I guess we all have to decide that for ourselves.
My opinion of him as a person is very much uplifted by the Wikipedia article! I like him a lot now as a person. And I encourage people to go and read it. It certainly was an eye opener, and my respect for Burr has grown a lot.

Well, it IS a different world in way too many respects and it’s definitely NOT all to the good. Generally speaking people owned much less clothing than many do today. The fact that people consider today’s styles for traveling much more comfortable they are frankly utterly without what then would have been referred to as anything that could qualify as ‘stylish’. Unless of course one is wealthy. Not only have we discarded style, we have become boorish and rude in our public behavior because too many feel entitled to do so. In their minds personal ‘freedom’ allows them to be whatever they chose to be in ANY setting. I think when Rosalind Russell commented at the point in her life where she had observed that humanity was losing it’s sensibility, generally speaking, and that ‘grace’ would disappear she was sadly visionary. What have we ‘allowed’ ourselves to become?
First of all, people in the industrial world are fatter than people right after WWII, so those clothes would not look good on them even if they tried, and would indeed be less comfy. I never wore high heels for instance.
And then there's the amount of people: people are generally unhappy because of all the noise, the dirt and the trouble in the world. Workers can be easily replaced, employers are unappreciative and people generally feel worthless. Reduce the number of people and things will change, individuals count again.
Good movie. I dont know these actors as this is an old movie, but her friend's brother (Robert Cummings) is very attractive and charming.

Allison, oh Alllison, ooohhhh Allison. Good movie, don't make them like this anymore. A few minutes in and don't miss color at all. Black and white is part of the charm of these films. I'm going to get some more popcorn and watch this again.
Claudette Colbert only made black and white films because she photographed so well in them and - she felt - poorly in colour . After she made Parrish in colour she retired. She appeared in only more production - on TV - over 25 years later.
I far prefer color. No exceptions. The people who claim B+W is better are just pretentious. Color does so much more to give the picture detail, texture, and depth. In 1 word, reality. B+W always looks flat as a pancake and it lacks so much! That's why B+W is rarely ever used now.

Not so surprising when you see and perhaps immediately recognize the actors. Some who later made more comedies than dramas should perhaps have stuck to drama as they are very believable in this film.
