Hi Fil: Love your show! Buck and I have been friends since college. He and his wife remain close to this day. Remember him in our apartment (1967) drinking coffee, reading Road and Track magazine, and practicing full fret-board riffs as if in a trance, an indelible memory. He is still one of the great rock guitarists! I enjoy your interaction with him. It is clear that you admire his virtuosity.
@@stevenwilkinson1265 Hi Steven: That's true. We co-wrote "Golden Age of Leather," and "Mirrors." Buck also independently recorded "Dawn of the Living Dead," another collab, with two sidemen, Red and the Black. We've been friends for 58 years.
What is amazing about BOC and Buck Dharma in particular, is that they've been playing their "classic" songs for over 40 years, but Buck brings different touches to his guitar parts every time.
Buck Dharma possibly the most underrated guitar player from the 70's. Could play circles around a lot of the better known players. Plus BOC had a huge variety of styles they played. Should be in Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Favorite Band of all time, favorite Guitarist/Vocalist of all time... great interview. Their new album blows me away with the creativity and freshness. You have to see Buck Dharma live in concert to truly appreciate his talent. (12 times for me) ... a fan for 45 years.
Fil what a great interview with a true legend. Buck Dharma in my humble opinion is the most underrated guitarist and so much more ... BOC was my first live concert in Leeds in 1979 on their Mirrors tour and loved the band since, very impressed with TSR and the contribution of Richie to the whole project. It was clear how much Buck enjoyed the interview too, genuine smiles from the Legend throughout. Warm regards from Jakarta Indonesia
That was fantastic, I’ve loved this band so much since 1972 and saw them about 30 times. Buck is an Icon and a truly original player. Very rarely can you immediately recognize a guitarist, Buck is one of those rare cases.
was fortunate enough to see BLUE OYSTER CULT and DEEP PURPLE in the early '70's. BOC opened for Alice Cooper, and I don't think I ever saw a better opening act. AC was so far out, he didn't have to worry about a great opener. never saw, before or since, a band that scraped their fretboards together. what a sound. thank you, FIL! I was very excited to see this interview.
"E.T.I." -- great little space boogie. "Take Me Away" -- for the Sci-Fi aficionado in all of us. "Astronomy" inspired me to start writing again. Thanks a million, Buck Dharma and the rest of B.O.C.! Thanks, Fil!
Very good interview. Buck seemed to enjoy it. I am glad you were fortunate to interview a legend like Buck Dharma. Perhaps, he was the "Agent of Fortune". :-)
GREAT interview ! Don Roser aka Buck Dharma is a legend and still rockin in 2021 ! I saw BOC live in the 70's and again in the 80's and they always put on a blistering show. Huge wall of sound. Eric Bloom with his Stun Guitar in the 70's was killer (Laser on the guitar) - Cities On Flame.
Man, this was a great surprise! Top album recently from BOC, and its great hearing Buck's banter about it here. Great chat and craic from you both. I still think that one of Buck's best moments is the live rendition of "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", from '81. Theres a video you gotta see on YT. An absolute must see- a reaction would be insane! 😃👍🤘 Mid song, the defiant march through the ice cool, frayed frontlines suddenly take a brilliant ascent upwards to the starlight, as the drums rev up, and Buck blasts off his fretboard. Series of rocket boosted tremelo picked notes blaze across the sky and for the next coupla minutes, all you can do is sit back, close yer eyes and take it all in. Its bloody fantastic. Tanks again for this cool conversation.
This was awesome! Love to hear the pros talk, "behind the scenes," stuff. And whow...BOC AND Deep Purple? That would be epic! Keep up the great content, Fil!
Thanks for this -- have had it bookmarked for months! I saw BOC every year from 1973 - 1981 and several times in the 90s and since. The amazing thing is Buck actually got better!
Great interview, Fil! BOC has been a favorite of mine since forever, used to see them in NJ and NYC as Soft White Underbelly. Absolutely love the new album. Congrats to Richie, his talents really show through on this release. Look forward to seeing the guys back on the road, where they kill it everytime.
Saw BOC on their tour supporting their first album in the summer of '72. Great show, been a huge fan for, well, 49 years! The first three albums have never left my personal top 20 over all the decades since. But the new album stands tall, enjoying every bit of it.
I agree w/ ALL comments re: Buck being WAY underrated 🎸 TASTEFUL, melodic-just Genius! I’ve seen B.O.C. 4 times incl. Red Rocks Amphitheatre 1980-ish GREAT Live Band 👍 My FAVORITE U.S. Band all time Thanks Eric,Don,Allan,Al & Joe!!
Enjoyed the conversation. The great thing about BOC is that Buck (and Eric) are articulate. The new album is very listenable and enjoyable which for some bands nowadays you can never take for granted. Look forward to seeing them live again.
Ok, Fil, so you're great at everything. (A born talk-show host!) The actual interview was so engaging---even someone as tech-impaired as I enjoyed it. And it brought home that musicians now have to be experts on, not only their instruments, but also the latest sound equipment. Staggering! Would love to see more interviews, along with your other appearances.
Outstanding work Fil! Can't thank you enough for this interview with Buck Dharma. Just as I always thought Buck would be, a nice guy, graciously answering your questions and ready to speak favourably about his bandmates. Have you seen Buck"s guitar tutorials on his own UA-cam channel? BOC have found an excellent new member in Richie Castellano who besides being an excellent musician, has a good grip on modern recording, audio and visual technology. (Have you seen his Band Geeks cover of the Yes classic "Roundabout", with each band member playing in isolation? Well worth a look). Liking what Buck said about he and Richie as "two lead guitars". The Blue Oyster Cult move on in their own inimitable way and "The Symbol Remains" forever. Buck's son Zeke did some co-writing with his dad on the new album. I wonder if the BOC will always be around, with new like-minded members playing the songs from the band's beginning and carrying their music forward (like Kraftwerk who now have only one original member and say they are not a band but a "movement")? I hope that we see BOC back on these shores in the not too distant future. BOC for the RRHoF? I think 2021 is the band's 50th year (not including their Soft White Underbelly/Stalk Forest Group incarnations) so maybe it's time. Thank you again Fil for your work on getting this interview with Buck Dharma to UA-cam. Stay safe and well.
Great interview! I remember seeing the BOC on a Sunday night in a BAD neighborhood in Oakland. Place called the Omni Theater. We had just seen Pink Floyd like the previous month. The Crowd was VERY responsive that night and the Band responded in kind. Halfway through, my wife leaned over to my ear and said “Pink Who?” One of many phenomenal shows of the 46 (and holding) shows I’ve seen with the BOC. First saw them in Cincinnati Gardens in 73? Opening for Rod Stewart and REO Speedwagon. I was so impressed I’ve gone and seen them every chance I got. I sure hope to see them perform the new stuff, because it’s phenomenal. Cheers!
As a person, for sure Buck is way better than Blackmore. I prefer BOC and Buck Dharma any day to anything Deep Purple has ever done. BOC always had better songs and they were a lot freer than all the giants and egomaniacs in Purple (with the exception of Ian Paice and Roger Glover).
I 1st saw Mr. Roeser with Soft White Underbelly in the summer of 1968. I have been privileged to speak with him over the years since. He is such a sweetheart, and truly engages you in conversation.
@@cybertaiga9534 I got to interact with Ritchie a few months before he left Deep Purple the 1st time. He actually thanked me for asking a couple of intelligent questions. Part of it is, he does not think he's good enough, and he's also a perfectionist.
Definitely getting the album! I had no idea a new cut was out but now that I know it, I'm in! Thanks for sharing this Fil and I might add you are pretty good at interviewing.
You won't regret it. If you are a Cult fan, you'll love it! If you aren't a Cult fan, you will be after the first play through. This album is one of the best of their catalog.
Wow, you got to chat with Buck Dharma and Frank Marino! Two of the great underrated guitarists of the classic rock era. BOC is one of my favorite bands. Congrats and very cool!
Fil, I just listened to your interviewing Buck on Patreon; I had to listen again! You did a fantastic job with this. It was interesting to hear both of you speak about the recording processes during COVID-e.g. using interfaces, Pro Tools, etc. Some criticism: “How come they didn’t spend a lot of money?”-as if that’s thats so bad LOL. I heard you mention being “old school”-I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all; I’ve been told that I’m that. Overall, this was amazing to listen to and great advice from Buck given. Many many thanks Fil!
This is a great album. I’ve loved BOC since I first heard them. Own all their albums. Buck has some of the best phrasing of any guitar player. Super underrated!
One of the times I got to talk with Mr. Roeser was at a place called "Night Town" in Destin, Florida back in 1986 on the "Club Ninja" tour. We had a chat about the then new technology of digital recording and CDs. I am not really surprised he has kept up with technology related to music.
Great interview, Fil! Been a huge BOC fan since the 70s, and Buck has been one of my most important influences both as a guitarist and vocalist. It helps that he is an absolute class act to go with his incredible talent.
wow! awesome!!! Got to see BOC at the Thunderbird Motel ! Back in like late 90's .... only like 500 people (max seating was like 350 ) ....was insane...got listen to them form front row for almost entire show !! (bio ya know). Love BOC fan from 1981 in 7th grade.
You are adorable, affable and intelligent. What a combination. I just stumbled on to your channel, and I will be coming back often. BUCK DHARMA!!! Criminally underrated guitarist. Thank you very much for this interview. It is about time some one recognized him. God knows the RRHOF won't ever. So it's up to us. My comment below was somehow scrambled up and I don't want to take up more room by trying to fix it. I am struck by the incredible array of artists you have included. Patsy Cline? John Fogerty, wow! Love it.

Albert and Joe Bouchard also put out new albums in 2020 and Albert makes a guest appearance in one of the videos from "The Symbol Remains". 2021 might be a great year, maybe, if we get past COVID. P.S. Albert plays cowbell. XD
As a BOC fan for 42 years I wasn't even sure a new album was a good idea in 2020 ... it's a really strong 8/10 with nearly every song being at least good.
On your knees or on your feet is one of the best live albums. I was lucky enough to see them perform 5 times prior to their don't fear the reaper album. The most I've seen any band play.
It's been my favourite of their's since getting my album during '70's high school...my 1st live show was summer '77, Utopia opened, sharing BOC's lasers. We lucked out with row 3 floor seats...seen them about a dozen times over the decades, always a great live group❗ Like many veteran '70's fans will tell you, it's the initial Black & Blue triptych & it's double live testament, that are the chosen recordings‼️ Regardless, "The Symbol Remains" is proof the Oyster Boys aren't just a nostalgia act, living off of past laurels...a really great record❗👍
It was great to see Fil light up as he spoke with Buck. We are so far removed from the days when hard rock was a mainstream staple that even guitar oriented bands are harder to find nowadays and it’s not uncommon to find bands that don’t even have a guitarist. It was fascinating to hear Buck talk about their recording process and having the same sound engineer for several decades. Which raises the question, what are “bedroom” bands of today who produce and mix everything on their computers missing from their sound that a conventional studio produced and mixed recording provide?
So nice to hear a musician talk to a musician! The answers to your questions gave a lot of insight to the whole new COVID process. I'll be sure to check their album out!
Nice interview. The new album is incredibly good, check out their 3 new videos on UA-cam done in quarantine and produced by Richie Castellano. The Alchemist song and vid is awesome, based on HP Lovecraft’s tale of the same name, I think it has the most BOC DNA and is true to their roots!
Great interview! I've always thought Buck Dharma was criminally under-rated and underappreciated, but never in my opinion! He always manages to compliment the song, not dominate it. Thank you, Fil!
Buck I'm so GLAD you and the band are healthy! You shredder you!!! "With six million albums to his credit in just two short years, my good friend... HERE'S BUCKY!" That's the way it goes. It's ROCK 'n ROLL!! LOL
Weird. My son was here tonight. I was just telling him when I saw Blue Oyster Cult in October of 1981 in Chicago. Then I come upstairs to go to bed and here is Buck Dharma.
You really need to interview Albert Bouchard. He was an integral member of BOC and cowrote a lot of the songs in their heyday. He just redid the Imaginos album and it sounds great.
Saw BOC in 1977 at the Commack Arena L.I., N.Y. Styx, BOC, and the J.Guiles Band. This is the same arena that Frampton recorded parts of the Comes Alive album. Also saw BOC on New Years Eve 1978 at the Nassau Colosseum. Leslie West, BOC, and Kiss. More cow bell!
great interview! the legend buck dharma! Boc has been in my top 3 all time favorite bands since they were Soft White Underbelly and Stallk Forrest Group!! yea i am that old! ahahaha
Yes Fil i'd love to see you analyse Buck's piece (with Rick Downey's great drum backing) on Veteran live in October 1981 .. just how hard was it to get that right on the night ? One of the finest on film for me all time ...
@@stevenwilkinson1265 I agree with you. Not sure if the movie chose the song or the song was made for the movie “Heavy Metal” but for some reason this song doesn’t get the accolades as other BOC hits. I’m thinking the latter.
I bought "On Your Feet or On Your Knees" in 1975 after hearing a couple of BOC cuts at a drunken college party. Never looked back, these guys are the real deal, on tour forever.
"All killer, no filler" !!! Love it!!! Happy BOC is still out there making music. The Alchemist is great 🎸 Look forward to your other segments with Buck. What a bummer that musicians can't go out and play live because of Covid." Let's all pray , that the pandemic will go away, so our musician friends, can come out to play" ☮️
Excellent chat. I hope the concert can go ahead in October. That would be so great! Totally live music deprived here, as I’m sure most of you are, and it really sucks.
BOC has ALWAYS made GREAT, low-budget videos for their songs. Usually a bunch of people standing around some burning oil barrels and gutted cars. Surrounded by half destroyed buildings. I guess I'll see you, dancing in the ruins tonight. Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
How can you not love Buck? The dude is one of the greatest guitarists in Rock history, yet is humble and friendly.

We lucked out with row 3 floor seats...seen them about a dozen times over the decades, always a great live group❗
Like many veteran '70's fans will tell you, it's the initial Black & Blue triptych & it's double live testament, that are the chosen recordings‼️
Regardless, "The Symbol Remains" is proof the Oyster Boys aren't just a nostalgia act, living off of past laurels...a really great record❗👍
Awesome job interviewing Buck, Fil!
Very interesting musicians tech talk!
I will have to check out their new album!
✌♥️🤘😊
So nice to hear a musician talk to a musician! The answers to your questions gave a lot of insight to the whole new COVID process. I'll be sure to check their album out!
Love the new album !
The new record is no BS, it's very, very, good, as good as anything they've done..
Nice interview. The new album is incredibly good, check out their 3 new videos on UA-cam done in quarantine and produced by Richie Castellano. The Alchemist song and vid is awesome, based on HP Lovecraft’s tale of the same name, I think it has the most BOC DNA and is true to their roots!
thanks Fil very excited to see the show on the 28th in Orlando this month, hope to hear the alchemist. Hosanna the wait is almost over.
Star struck again! Buck and BOC. "The Symbol Remains" is tasty and I loved the rock mix. Godzilla reference sure was sweet.
BOC 🙌🏽
Great interview 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks, Buck & Fil! 🖤🤘🏽
Just clicked over to listen to it, and, DAY-UM!
SHEER AWESOMENESS!
B.O.C. Forever!
You really need to interview Albert Bouchard. He was an integral member of BOC and cowrote a lot of the songs in their heyday. He just redid the Imaginos album and it sounds great.
Yes great album. BOC enhanced by the creativity of Albert, never really the depth to them after he left but still produced some magnificent material.
Odd how they slightly recaptured their magic post Albert with Imaginos, which was originally an Albert solo album.
Fil, thank you so much for this!! Buck is a huge influence and you asked everything I wanted to ask!!
Hey Fil! I've been a BOC fan since high school ... This was back when Cities were on flame with rock and roll! Great interview, thanks :-)
great interview! the legend buck dharma! Boc has been in my top 3 all time favorite bands since they were Soft White Underbelly and Stallk Forrest Group!! yea i am that old! ahahaha
YAY!! Usually I am the soul of patience, but I was getting impatient for this!
@@corilia9529 Also me!
Yep!
@@corilia9529 Hi Cori! 😉😊
Seen them from 1978 to 2020 too many times to count. Then came a new album after 20 years. Wow
Blue Oyster Cult - “Veterans of The Psychic Wars” Live 1981 is Buck at his finest. This was very interesting, BOC & DP together would be a great show.
This tune is one of those songs that really shows itself at extreme decibel levels.

I bought "On Your Feet or On Your Knees" in 1975 after hearing a couple of BOC cuts at a drunken college party. Never looked back, these guys are the real deal, on tour forever.
This is a far-out interview Fil. nice to hear Buck Dharma and You chatting
Thanks Fil and Buck for doing this. stay safe guys! 😷
Its a very good album , sounds like old BOC, I thought it was great .
@Gerald H *Bouchard
Great new album from BOC 🤟
"All killer, no filler" !!! Love it!!! Happy BOC is still out there making music. The Alchemist is great 🎸 Look forward to your other segments with Buck. What a bummer that musicians can't go out and play live because of Covid." Let's all pray , that the pandemic will go away, so our musician friends, can come out to play" ☮️
BOC and Deep Purple.....that will be an awesome show! Good job Fil! You asked great questions. I wasn't bored. I hope you do more interviews.
This was good Fil! Listening to musicians so interesting. Thanks for sharing with us.
I love Mr. Roeser. Such a Talent, but such (as my Jewish great grandfather might say) an edel mensch...a Noble Man.
Definitely can't wait to see them live again! Thx for this Fil!
