The Franco-Prussian war. Also known as: the only war where Germany fought France without necessarily moving through Belgium.
Bruh 😂
And because that, she would have to move through Belgium in the next 2 wars. 😂

0:18 did they just use the blitzkrieg?
Lol
@@matthewishere9900 its only in WW2
blitzkrieg is when distraction (mostly refugees) block the supply line of defending troops, after that opening
is made the enemy troops advance through and and encircle defending troops, this is done multiple times in the same battles until the defending troops retreat or surrender
only used by germans in ww2 im pretty sure
also, what you called a blitzkrieg is actually just your average capital encirclement which has been done many times in history, its made to encircle the capitals supplies so once it gets weaker it can be occupied
@@carkitten67 This is wrong, blitzkrieg is literally just fast war. it was used by Napoleon in the napoleonic wars, by the germans here, in ww1 and in ww2, though it was inneficient here and in ww1 because of supply issues and no fast way to move troops. You are right when saying that that was an encirclement and siege, but the germans did hurry to get to paris after capturing napoleon the thirs, thus making it blitzkrieg.
The little dot in southern Alsace is Belfort, the city remained unconquered thanks to the heroic defense of Denfert-Rochereau. The lion of Belfort was sculplted by Bartholdi (Statue of liberty) to commemorate this heroic defense !
The resistance convinced the Germans to let southern Alsace French, today "territoire de Belfort" belongs to the region Bourgogne-Franche-comté while being historically Alsace.
Only for it to be ceded after the war!
@@ash_11117 The territory of Belfort wasn't ceded to Germany (not in 1871 at least)

A poorly known fact about this war is that everything could have ended far less painfully for France if negotiations had started when Napoleon III surrendered on September 2d, 1870, at Sedan (see 00:15). Wilhelm and Bismarck would still have proclaimed the German Empire (but not in Versailles), and the German territorial claims would have been far smaller than Alsace-Lorraine.
But, on September 4th, a revolution happened in Paris, instoring the (Third) Republic. And the new regime, putting the responsability of the defeat on the fallen 2nd French Empire (and it was obviously true), decided to fight on, against all odds. And it did not end well.
So, two French regimes were defeated in one war.
Negotiations couldn’t happen because by August 1870 Napoleon III was literally a nobody, he had no role commanding the army and the French empire had a regency already. He only stayed in his army by this point to motivate soldiers and because he felt he would be cowardly had he returned to Paris
@@fahoodie1852 : there was no regency from September 4th, because there was a Republican revolution in Paris ! And there was the problem : Republican thought that the Prussians were fighting against the Bonaparte regime, not France (so, if the Bonaparte fell, so there would be peace at no cost for France, would'nt it ?). They were mistaking a little bit. Starting the negotiations from September 4th (or 2d or 3rd if there had been no revolution) would have been the only reasonable decision.
Amazing!
Nice video.

Italy casually annexing the Papal States in the background
Where
@@Directed2212 It's not shown in the video.
During this time, Italy was finishing its own unification process and pretty much the only thing left was Rome, which they wanted because, given its historical importance, it was planned for it to be the capital. The problem was Napoleon III had taken the Pope under his protection and so Italy couldn't attack Rome without declaring war on France, something they definitely didn't want to do.
This war forced Napoleon III to move his troops away from Rome and focus his army on Germany, effectively removing the Pope's protection and allowing Italy to annex Rome and what was left of the Papal States.
@@Gabriel-ip6me Well, it actually is shown in the video, although without flags. You can see at 0:20 (September 20th, 1870) the Papal-Italian border at Lazio disappear.

France really has to stop declaring war on germany
Make searches on google and you will understand that even if France didn't declare the war, Prussia would have declared it instead. Why? Because they wanted the Franco-Prussia war to happen in order to use France as a common enemy for both Prussia and the south countries/regions that Prussia wished to unify with. Napoleon III who was ruling France at that time was against wars, he say it numerous times, the most known one was in a speech at Bordeaux the 9 october 1952: "Empire is peace" etc... If France declared the war it is because of a lot of factors: The first one and the most important one, a France hate was growing in Prussia (common enemy etc...) and the country was arming itself, the exact same scenario already happened a few years ago during the Austro-Prussian war so France knew they would be attacked soon enough, but unfortunately they were not ready for it. The second reason is the pressure Prussia was putting on them due to Spain's elections where a Prussian very close to the Prussia's king was a candidate, if he would have won the election France would have 0 chances to win considering they would be attacked on 2 borders. The last reason is called the "Ems dispatch", it is a telegram sent by Prussia to deliberately make french people scared and angry, this is what pushed France's ministers to force Napoleon III declaring the war, which was perfect for Prussia who could make themselves pose as the victim attacked by supposed brutal french.
Napoleon III was also extremely ill (he will die 2 years after the war from his illness), he only wanted France to progress in its industrial revolution (it was the second industrial power at that time after UK) and wanted to stay peaceful and diplomatic, like he successfully did for years.
@@Oyou20 why did France attack the german states during the napoleonic wars, during the 30 years war, and many more wars etc.
@@Oyou20 Bruh, he literally attacked mexico and tried to annex it and attacked russia and attacked north algeria, etc..... Is that how you define "wanted to stay peaceful and diplomatic"?!!!
@@cqpp During the 30 years war, Germans themselves were fighting each others lol. Also I don't have time to explain you each war, use Google.
@@deserteffect1001 He said "the Empire is peace" mostly to reassure the French, who remembered the last empire as a time of constant war. However the invasion of Mexico, Crimea or Korea couldn't harm the French. A war against Germany, a neighboring country could.

Prussia be like : STRONK
So for a few months Germany didn’t own Alsace-Loraine?
I wonder how things would turn out if prussia didn't take elsaß, if Bismarck treated france much like he treated Austria after the austro prussian war.
Well a weaker Germany I'd say. One main reason for kaiser willeim wanting Alsace was that prussia didnt trust the southern states to protect the border against France
December 1st 1870: (France) "Hey, stop it"
December 2nd 1870: (Prussia) "No, I don't think I will"
I don't know much about the history of France and Napoleon but did the Prussian empire defeat them?
In the end, yes. Together with its allies, but it took multiple attempts and a dumb move from napoleon

I still don't understand why the french army collapsed so quickly
It wasn’t efficiently commanded, lacked effective leadership, inferior artillery and was besieged in many battles.
@@Nolan51_ he didn’t, he actually tried to de escalate the situation and already felt he was going to lose in the very beginning. He was already dying at the time
3 reasons:
1. The Prussian army was larger. Significantly larger. This because of Prussia's highly militarized society and Germany's considerably larger population when compared to France.
2. Prussia had extremely competent commanders. France had a bunch of lazy incompetents that for decades had been living off of the glory and prestige achieved during the Napoleonic wars.
3. The Republicans (France's leftwing party) had been actively sabotaging Napoleon's attempts to strengthen the army, hoping precisely for this outcome.
@@Gabriel-ip6me copied and pasted comment
@@Gabriel-ip6me Almost everything is wrong, 1. The Prussian army was not outnumbered, together with southern Germany it was slightly outnumbered at the beginning of the war, and by the end of the war the French had raised almost 500,000 more 2. Prussia had strong generals, but Wurttemberg and Bavaria often got in the way with their interference. And to say that France had weak generals is nonsense, they had vast experience from the wars in North Africa to the wars in Russia, as well as vast experience from the wars with Austria before that
3.The Left Wing was quiet enough before Napoleon was taken prisoner, they similarly did not want the French to be defeated and lose their major power status.
