Younger people, there's always a vast amount of amazing older music you haven't heard. Older people, there's incredible music being made by young people today if you half try to look. Everyone, run up that hill and find it.
Kate Bush going omega-viral with Gen Z and being canonized as global icon in 2022 is one of the few shining rays of hope in a world that seems to be in freefall.
It was the first thing my sister (58) and I (55) talked about when seeing eachother after a month 😁
What?? She wasn’t canonized. It was her one song that was overplayed in Stranger Things S4, & after that. I wish you were right, but unfortunately that’s not what happened

Bush is a retired once popular/current cult icon without a major label deal, relevant primarily to the generation that grew up with her. Then in 2022, she was #1 in 18 countries - a level of enduring power & perpetual relevance generally only achievable by The Beatles or Queen. Kate Bush, cult icon, is now among that canon of rare artists who can endure beyond their time with equal or greater impact.

b. Bush owns 100% of the copyright & her masters under her private company. She's the recipient of the publishing profit - but that's not the point - the point is that her status & sales power aren't buoyed by the multimillion backing of a major label or publishing holding. That any artist's relevance & sales power can remain undiminished through the decades on the merit of the music alone is the point. A level rarely achieved among a very small club.
You glossed over "The Dreaming," but for anyone interested in more of her catalogue, you must listen to this masterpiece of an album. It is amazing from the first song to the last.
Great album! Admittedly, not very accessible to the uninitiated fan but definitely a work of art; a masterpiece in it's own right. I didn't listen to it often but when I did, I listened to all of it. I don't tend to listen to music much any more but when I did, I wore out a couple copies of Hounds of Love and The Sensual World.
Still my top record of all time.

RUnning Up That Hill is a great song, but there is a lot more to Kate Bush than that one hit. She has many masterpieces --- from her debut album in 1978 to her latest studio album in 2011 (and there is more to come) - and her 2016 live release "Before The Dawn" is absolutely incredible. There is practically nothing that she does that is not brilliant. Her catalog is rich and deep and her music is always different, compelling, and innovative. A truly artistic and creative genius on the level of David Bowie and Peter Gabriel.
I've always liked "The Big Sky", "The Sensual World", "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" for example - I never understood the exaggerated emphasis on "Running Up that Hill" there are so many great ones...

The relentless, driving, hypnotic percussion throughout the entire song is what makes this such a compelling track imo. It's tribal and grabs the attention, with such great lyrics and vocals you can't deny how much of a powerful song it is
Kate Bush is an absolute genius. Her willingness to experiment and use new technologies is very inspiring. Also looking forward to Polyphonic Magazine!! Still have my music magazine collection. Pictures and information from smaller artists sounds so cool! I’ve definitely gotta get on Nebula now, I’ve put it off too long.

when i graduated highschool in 2014, my mentor, the sound guy for our theater gave me dozens of albums on a USB drive. from Queens Of The Stone age to Marillion, with Spoon and Weezer mixed in. There was one he pointed out, "I got this album when I went off to college, just like you are now. It meant a lot to me then and I hope it helps you like it helped me." It was The Whole Story by Kate Bush. While the standout to me was Cloudbusting in her library, Her music helped me in ways I never thought it could. she's a perfect artist and i love how much attention she's getting.[
There's also an element of just how perfectly the song slots into the plot there. It really was a masterpiece of scoring a scene using pre-existing pop music. Almost like they chose the song and wrote the plot around it.

It's literally a shrek 2 moment
It's obvious to tell that she added string sections to create a special version for the producers to use. In other words, she collaborated with them as opposed to just allowing them to use her tune. I know that she would have never allowed others to modify her music without her hands-on involvement. At least I would be shocked if I were mistaken.
Don't Give Up with Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel is like the shining beacon of a beautiful track
I first saw the music video on a VH1 80's themed program sometime around 2005. Both the video and song were unlike usual 80's video and even unlike any modern video. It just hit different.
Us Kate Bush fans have been saying for years that despite her success and fame she is underrated, because she deserves to be famous on the level of Bowie or Madonna, she is your fav artists fav artist, everyone from Johnny Rotten to Big Boi sing her praises. It pains me how many of my friends knew Florence and the Machine, but not Kate Bush, an obvious influence.
So this revival is a wonderful thing, well deserved! I strongly recommend new fans check out some other songs like *Hounds of Love, Big Sky, Cloudbusting, or Be Kind To My Mistakes*
Kate Bush is a singular talent and a true musical genius that's inspired countless artists in the last 40 years. I'm so pleased her music is getting a resurgence with the younger generation because she deserves it.

My dad put the song on a mix tape he made for me in 1985... I loved the song and fell in love with her again in the 90s and devoured all her albums. She is an incredible artist, timeless and awesome.
I fell in love with this song and Bush's music in general back in the 80s. It's awesome that new people are being exposed to her genius. I only wish she didn't have terrible stage fright. There are a handful of artists I would go to ridiculous lengths to see live. She is at the very top of that list.
She also won't fly. That's why she's never done an American tour. She's only been over here once in the mid-'70s when she took a ship here and back.
She tends to be a bit more private than a lot of her well-known peers. But that's fine by me.

She has been asked about stage fright and denied it, stating that she felt the reason she never performed live was because she preferred to make a [stage play production] out of it, rather than just simply perform the songs. She found it to be quite a lot of work when she did it and reckons she was hesitant to take the steps required to do it often enough to make a habit of it. Ideally, she would have like to make a habit of it but just simply didn't...

I ditched an Old English class in university to buy this album/cassette. I sometimes do not listen to this for ages, then put it on repeat. I estimate it probably averages out to once a day since its release. only Diva by Annie Lennox matches it for repetition... Kate makes me feel supported for ambitions, and Diva makes me feel loved
I am so happy that Kate Bush is finally got the recognition she rightfully deserves. And as a music fan who was a fan of her's then, I am not the only man who had a huge crush on her

Kate is an incredible musician, author, and person....and deserves all the praise she so richly receives!
I fell in love with Kate Bush in 1983 when I saw the video for Sat In Your Lap (it was the drums). I had purchased all her other albums by the time Hounds of Love was released. It is almost impossible to describe the feeling of excitement (even nervous excitement) I felt dropping the needle on Hounds of Love for the first time. I was a "what journey are you going to take me on this time?" experience, and what an experience. I am so happy she is finally getting the recognition she deserves.
Even though I don't believe that Kate would care, I still have to ask the obvious question: why isn't Kate Bush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
(There are a million answers, but I wonder if any of them are justifiable.)
She's been nominated three times - the most recent was this year. I would say that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame missed a huge promotional opportunity, with the resurgence of her music, by passing up inducting her this year. For instance, they could have inducted her instead of Carly Simon - I really enjoy Simon's music, but I would say that Kate Bush is a far more unique, creative, innovative musician, artist and songwriter - she is theater. And, one could argue that she was the OG in terms of where artists like Madonna, Lady Gaga, etc. got their aesthetic. To me, she is the female David Bowie. We will see next year.
@@Purplenpinkk I think nominees are voted on by the public. In 2022, she ranked 10 out of 17 nominees (we voted for her every day the polls were open). If nominated again, perhaps this recent resurgence is the push she needs to finally be inducted.
@@vincijuju Actually, the public gets to vote, but it is also up to the RRHOF to determine who gets inducted. They have a few elements they consider to induct. I think the top 5 or so voted on by the public usually get in, but then the committee picks a few from those beyond the five. So, they could have honored her with the induction instead of Carly Simon or Lionel Richie - they didn't make the top 5. I hope she gets in next year.
My sister discovered her music in College through her Scottish teacher then I rediscovered her through Stranger Things though I had remembered vaguely the time my sister listened to her beautiful and entrancing music. Running up that Hill(A deal with God) is only one of many amazing works she has created. I am a writer too so anything she creates inspires me.
I would say reaching #3 in America in 2022, in a country she never really had much success, is more remarkable
This song makes me first think of Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker from Wrestlemania 26…both that and it’s use in Stranger Things give me pure chills.

I first found the song thru Placebo's version, the VHS style music video. Took a few listens to adjust and get how great the original was, and my god it's a masterpiece
That's how I found it. I'm definitely more partial to placebo's version. I take nothing away from Kate bush, it is great. But Brian Molko sings it the way it should've been from the start, in my opinion. Makes it intimate. Like you and your lover in bed and they whisper in your ear

Kate Bush is such a great artist! I really hope that this new resurgence doesn't end on running up that hill. I'm not saying that other songs from her catalog should go to the top but that young people will go and discover the other songs. I adore Babushka for example. I also hope that the song doesn't gets so overplayed that in a year or two no one can stand it, and with TikTok that's certainly a possibility.
I agree that Running Up That Hill should not be the only song that new fans listen to. Her catalog is filled with so many amazing songs worth exploring. She's a brilliantly unique singer & songwriter.
Babooshka actually got really popular on tiktok for a while last year, almost as a herald of things to come 😂
Kate Bush will always remain one of music’s most unique and special artists. Her artwork is truly nothing short of genius and I doubt there will be anything quite like it again.

In terms of expression, I think the song's chorus resonates because it's meant to be something like a plead. The chords literally go higher and higher as she sings creating a sort of tension and I think a lot of us nowadays just wanna shout and let it all out because what's going on lately
Personally, I like Wuthering Heights better; but good for her on this most peculiar achievement.
The synts in the song really remind me much more of modern 80s nostalgia than the synths and electronic drums used in a lot of other 80s hits like Sussudio

Running up that Hill, has been a amazing song in the goth scene. I haven't seen Stranger Things season 3 yet. Though the first time I heard Running up that Hill for the first time in 2010. A roommate at the time was listening to it on the computer with the speakers on. That's when I started listening to it.
I think everything by Kate Bush is timeless. You can play the albums in any order and you wouldn't really know that wasn't the chronological order unless you already knew. 😉 I think this is one of the reasons I can listen to it at a kid many years ago, and why I recently saw my friends 11 year old son streaming a Kate bush playlist. Yes, Stranger Things introduced people to her, but one show is not the reason they keep coming back IMHO.
Not quite sure about that. I think you can tell the first album is the first. Her voice deepens and mellows as the albums progress, and the soundscape gets much more complex.
@@philipheath3307 Sure, production values have changed over the years, but some of this would be less noticeable if you were listening to remastered versions. Some people do "back to basics" releases throughout their career, so even then it could have been a "stylistic choice", if you didn't know different. I'm not sure if she still has the range she had in her youth, but I still feel like they are all timeless.

First, great with the magazine.
Second, I was in year 10 (11th grade, 14-15) when I first heard of Kate Bush. I read Wuthering Heights for the first time, and a teacher told me that someone did a song and music video based on that. That person was Kate Bush, an 18 year old aspiring dancer who decided to do exactly that (as in sing and dance). That was a profound moment in my life. From then on I heard Babushka, Running Up That Hill, her duet with Peter Gabriel (the music video to that is one to watch), and you get the idea. Living in South London myself (at least an hour away from the district she was born in) it really does instill a sense of belonging, also being a Dutch-born Yorkshirean-Londoner with West African blood in him, so it makes things a lot more simple for me personally.
Kate Bush is so great she is amazing. She is my fav artist with Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, David Bowie. She has so many great albums my fav is probably The Dreaming of Hounds of Love

i have beeen a massive fan for years now, and will be signing up.
In fact this is the firs time I will be signing up for a individual streamer, because I feel that you pull what is inside my head in terms of musical, and cultural understanding, and put it into incredibly eloquent words, and give the emotions that one feels a more grounded, and hollistic sentiment.
I hope in my small way I isnpire you to dig deeper into this thing that connects us all in your very outside way, but understand how important it its for people like you to express this truth that we all feel, but is not nessarily reflected in record sales, or any other weird metric.
The movements that need to be reveived, or just apprecation for the genuine, and intrinsic value that older music has built, and influenced our modern, flash by night culture, and how we need to get back to this less prosaic, original, and true way of being.
I would love to have endless chats to you about this whole thing, but knowing you are out there doing it for us all, it makes me really happy. Peace.

I found this song a few years ago on Spotify, by chance. I saved it in my favorites list because it seemed super fresh, but I never realized that it was such an old song. It sounded very current to me. When I heard it on Stranger Things I was a little taken aback, because it seemed to me that they had made a mistake using a "new" song in a series set in the 80s. When I found out how old Running Up That Hill was I was very surprised.
I agree, Curiosity Stream and the attached Nebula service are absolutely worth their money. I'm into it since last year and is the best available. 👌
Just as a side note, mastering the Fairlight CMI was not an easy task, there was no GUI just text and it required a programming approach to get anything out of it. Also it's price was astronomical. AFIK included was an engineer though that you could book if you got stuck. Nevertheless, hats off to Kate.

The first time I heard that song was when I watching a queer show called Pose which was also set in the late 80s to mid 1990s and liked it but during the beginning of the panini I watched documentaries on certain artists and found out about Kate Bush and that she was the artist of that song.As time went by I liked it and her discography even more.It is crazy how despite not being a mega 80s star here in the states like MJ,Prince,or Madonna,she was able to reenter the charts again and again and connect through many generations including mine.It is so surreal to see a 30 year old song be on mainstream radio amongst a sea of 2-3 minute viral hits.
Edit:I did not know This woman's work was made by her originally.I heard the Maxwell cover first and didn't know until now holy shit.

I started a new job in January of1992 and one of my new co-workers absolutely LOVED Kate Bush and "Running Up That Hill". So I heard it quite a lot. And I wonder where that woman (the Kate Bush fan, not Kate Bush herself) is now...is she aware of the lasting impact the song has had...has she seen this video (as well as ones on the same topic by Produce Like A Pro, David Bennett Piano, Trash Theory, and probably a hell of a lot of others)

TMS Skits Long time Bush fans don't need to make claims and join clubs. Sharing their knowledge of Kate and her associates on UA-cam makes it blatantly obvious who and what they are. For instance, how many casual fans would know that Kate appeared on track 2 (The Seer) and track 5 (Eiledon) on Side 1 of Scottish band Big Country's album "The Seer"? I know, because I've got everything she ever recorded on vinyl. I've proved it without even mentioning this song OR Stranger Things OR any club.
This is why music should be cyclical like fashion... I've never heard of this song until Stranger Things

I had literally never heard of Kate Bush or this song until Trash Theory did a video about her like 2 years ago. I’m 41. She was just never on either of my parents’ radar. My dad liked Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, The Beatles, and Led Zepplin 🤷♂️

I discovered her through Peter Gabriel. I heard her on Don't Give Up from So and had to find out more. I quickly acquired her entire library at the time and have bought everything she has released over the years.

Even though she was out of the limelight for a very long time, I can't think of another artist that has been so present in my life. Her music is so powerful that it endures her not being present in the media.
She has a very loyal fanbase. And her concerts in 2014, after decades not life performing, left many people disappointed, not being able to get one of the far to little tickets.

@@wouterkoops9024 Because for some reason, Kate never really had much success outside the UK/Europe until Stranger things. Certainly not in the USA where she barely even counts as a one hit wonder. Where as here in the UK, certainly among music nerds and people my age, she's a national treasure.

My theory: We're in a 80s nostalgia trip and we're trying to replicate the past. But Kate Bush is such a unique figure that it can not be replicated, the original can be the only one. Plus, Stranger Things made a push so people would listen to it, but the people made it stuck around

I grew up listening to Kate Bush due to my parents and I’ve always loved RUTH but wow stranger things has given that song such a new meaning and I’ll always think of that scene when listening to it. I’m glad more people outside of the UK are beginning to listen to her

Whenever I write songs all I think is “what would polyphonic say?”
It's interested how most people, even the people who like the newer pop music, still really like older music, but we don't see many new bands or artists get big when they make those older styles of music. Not like how they used to at least.

In the UK Kate Bush's fame never went away, she has always been considered a musical genius in her homeland.
For people like me, who began listening to Kate Bush as a teenager in the early 80s after seeing her on MTV here in the U.S., I would argue that her power is definitely enduring. Once you understand and appreciate her artistry, you never forget Kate Bush.
Younger Generation here: I knew about Kate Bush before that overhyped lame Netflix show since she has inspired so many other great artists like Tori Amos or Eivør. Also, Bush is some much more than just "Running up that Hiil".
