That's honestly something I noticed as of late. Modern kid's meal toys have somehow gotten even cheaper and lazier in their design than ones from the 90's and 2000's. Older ones probably weren't great either, but they at least had some kind of gimmick that made them fun (I always got very excited seeing Transformers toys at McDonalds), but these are somehow more basic in their function, and so visually boring.
Oh yeah, especially the Transformers Animated McDonald's toys. I remember having a couple Optimus Primes back in the day, and I always thought they were the coolest toy of the bunch because they actually transformed into a pretty convincing truck, not gonna lie.

As a kid in the 90's, one of my favorite kid's meal toys were these transformer aliens that turned into McDonald's food items. I also had a McDonalds burger where, when you opened it, under the bun was a clear dome with McDonalds characters moving around. It was fully mechanical and winds up when you close the bun-lid. I wonder if I can find it anywhere…
omg i loved the transformers toys, they were so fun to be fair girls mcdonalds toys have always been boring and sucked, i almost always got boy toys unless the girl toys were something i was into like littlest pet shop because the boy toys always had some sort of cool gimmick

Who also remembers the controversial Burger King pokemon toys that KILLED 2 children and almost killed another. However, there are a ton of videos talking about this killer PokeBall toy and is also the main reason why all PokeBall toys have both sides attached.
Remember when McDonald's used to give out those Nintendo Mario challenge toys back in 2006? Just when the Wii was coming out and the DS was a huge hit.
On the links awakening toy, i think the "cart" is supposed to be like the wooden box you ride on in the rapids ride, but the toy itself is very underwhelming 😅

At least the Splatoon one and the Mario Kart one could be fun if your sibling got the same toy (which is pretty common), as you could challenge each other to launch the squid the furthest or have a classic 1v1 race, entertaining enough while eating. Also I think the Luigi toy is meant to be a slide whistle? Though it probably doesn't work as it should. XD

Burger King toys have been underwhelming for 10 years now. I remember getting the SpongeBob set in 2011 and I thought they were the coolest things ever. Nowadays there is little to no creativity or effort in these kind of toys
The hands down best Burger King toys I've seen in the past decade were the Slugterra ones back in like... 2014/2015? They were honestly decent quality even though they didn't do anything and I went out of my way to collect all of them because they make cool display pieces.
Okay let me just fix these 1 moment with just the first idea I can think of, because they clearly didn't even try : *Splatoon* : Hmm, how about a rolling stamp? Comes with Ink pad. Just just the roller on the ink pad hodling the squid at an angle and then use the paper provided and roll in a direction. It'll leave little ink splat prints as you drag the squid along; like it's moving along the ink or leaping out of it. *Luigi* : the ghost is on the end of a bendy wire (or bent plastic tube) and it goes through and out luigi's backpack. The gimmic is you twist the tube at the back and because the wire/plastic stream out the end is all wavy, it looks like it's sucking the ghost up and it's trying to get away. (Think of The Real Ghostbusters toys). Or for a simpler version, add the ghost on the end of a string and a motor inside luigi; you pull the ghost and it slowly goes back to the end of the vacuum. (Like the Mc Donalds Mulan toy with chen, po and that other guy running; which means that can actually do it because it already existed.) *Legend of Zelda* : This one is easy. Link is on top of a spinning top. You rev it up and he spins with his sword sticking out. *Animal Crossing* : Seriously? This is so bad I'm surprised it didn't get stationary leaves and an isabelle pen; but okay here goes... You get an animal crossing character (doesn't matter which) and when you shake it; it makes a sound similar to they do in the game. Pretty much those silly shaking noises toys that sound like they giggle. *Mario Kart* : Tbh it's not bad. If I could change it though, I'd just make the wheels spin; nothing beats a pull-back feature. *Mario Maker* : Not bad for a mario toy but mario maker? Nah man it needs to feel like you're building a level. So how about a mario maker toy (can be one solie lump) and some mario-themed blocks and platforms, so you can BUILD the level you play on. Just something as simple as building blocks would work! These are literally the first ideas that came to mind and I'm sure they're not that good. But it's better than a wobbly platform and a 2d cutout of link -.-
All great ideas, as much as I love the idea of the first one I think it needs to be mess free in case children are eating in the restaurant and playing there. Don't want kids inking up tables. Lord how I would love a splatoon stamp though...
I have the Link's Awakening toy and I actually kept it because I found it cute since I got the reference. It's supposed to be him on the little "plank boat" in the river ride minigame. The toy itself isn't the greatest most entertaining thing but I instantly knew what it was after I saw it rides along at a bumpy wave like pattern. I think it has a slightly neat collectability factor to it, but that's just my opinion.
For sure fast food toys of the past few years have been very lame compared to older toys. I think because now it's more of a gimmick and just a thing they do for sales rather than something they were more invested in promoting. I think the pokemon 20th anniversary packs were the only cool toys I've seen from fast food for the past few years(and maybe the small beanie babies)
While I don't know for sure, I have a feeling the Luigi's Mansion whistle was supposed to be a slide whistle, where you blow in it, pull & push the ghost to change the tune.

I usually don't like being an old person, but I'm glad I grew up back in the days when fast food kids meal toys had at least some thought and quality put into them. If I was a kid and received any of these, I think I would never want to eat at a fast food restaurant ever again 💀
You indirectly reminded me that at some fast food restaurant back long ago, I forget which one, but they sold to you Pokemon cards literally made out of gold itself. I don't remember what happened to mine, a Poliwhirl one, but I faintly recall losing it at some point, so I no longer have that slate of gold of a Pokemon card
The Wendy's Chain chomp toy was the holy grail to me as a kid. Took it to the Christian academy and was the envy of everyone. See, the Wendy's at my house sold out pretty fast. And nobody had one.
I hope one day when my stories get green lit into shows and a fast food tie in comes into play, that I’m there 100% in the design process and I’m coming up with all the ideas for what the toys look and do. We’re really live in a sad period where there’s very little vision in what’s being created and that’s genuinely sad. OH it took me quite a second to realize what the Zelda one was! I haven't beaten the game yet It's not a cart it's more like a raft, It's from the waterfall section of the game, towards the side you can okay a raft game to collect heart pieces and money and junk and it goes reeaalllyyy slow most times.

Mario ones seem to get a better deal every now and again you get good Nintendo licensed toys like how Pokemon get actual figures that fire, light up and move, but then you get crappy toys like literal disc shooters that suck. no kid wants disc shooters that barely go an inch and most of the toys are worthless because you get a card. i seriously have a Mario toy from like a year or two ago and while it's meant to sound like it's hopping on blocks or getting coins: mine is busted and it's just ear piercing screeches of death. they look better but aren't better.

There’s so many options and they went with b o a r d Heck, link has a horse in breath of the wild, which is for the switch. Why didn’t they use that? And all these are just off the top of my head too, not that hard to think of
Sometimes these places will have kids meal toys that are basically scaled down regular figures, typically with the only articulation being moving the arms up and down. Those were always my favorite when I was a kid.

When I worked at Burger King I would only put working/non broken toys in the kids bags and my manager would get so mad that I wasn’t using all of them 😅 Also if the store manager wasn’t around I always overfilled fries for every order 😬

The reason the Wii U "toys" are so hard to find is because they aren't actually toys, Nintendo just started giving away their backstock of Wii Us with kids meals to open warehouse space for the Switch

When I worked at Burger King I would only put working/non broken toys in the kids bags and my manager would get so mad that I wasn’t using all of them 😅
Also if the store manager wasn’t around I always overfilled fries for every order 😬

The reason the Wii U "toys" are so hard to find is because they aren't actually toys, Nintendo just started giving away their backstock of Wii Us with kids meals to open warehouse space for the Switch

i think the luigi mansion 3 toy is ment to be a moving whistle.. where u blow the whistle and drag the ghost back and forth and it makes diffrent pitches XD
