I think as Sig has gotten older, he's coming to realize even more than he already does, just how easily families can be devastated should something happen on the Bering Sea. If the Northwestern happened to go down, somehow, with Sig, Mandy, her husband, and Edgar/Norman onboard, that'd wipe out most of the Hansen family in one go and one of the few remaining members would have to grow up telling people why half their family just all died one day.
Im sure when he saw the ice he instantly went to the Scandies Rose, one of the safest boats in the fleet going down to ice with father and son on board.
Sig has lost two very dear friends when crab boats have gone down in the last 4-5 years. As you age, and as you see things happen, you gain the understanding that what you think is "immortality", and the idea "it will never happen to me" are illusions, that you can no longer afford.

The Bering Sea cares not of your family and will swallow you down, Captain Sig knows that. There comes a time when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child.
Every baby needs the mother in his or her immediate vicinity, especially in the first year of life. This is very important for the development of the child but is grossly underestimated nowadays. The grandfather sensed what was good for the child and it's also better for his daughter.

Capt Sig has always been my favorite. How he handles situations bad and good.
Thanks captain obvious

Sig has lost two very dear friends when crab boats have gone down in the last 4-5 years. As you age, and as you see things happen, you gain the understanding that what you think is "immortality", and the idea "it will never happen to me" are illusions, that you can no longer afford.
Sig did the right thing. And Mandy deep down knows that and so does the crew. If they were lost at sea, the baby would have no mother OR father. Good call by Sig.

important to note this was just as good for sig as it was for mandy and the baby, sig already had a massive heart attack so he really doesn't need that added pressure and stress. Tough call to make but it's for the better for both of them.
Like he said, he wouldnt have said it years ago, but Scandies Rose, Destination, loss of Phil, his own medical issues.. also the fact that he is grandfather and has his daughter and son in law on one boat..

Sig did the right thing!!! He's in charge and responsible for everything that goes on that boat good or bad - doesn't matter. His daughter with at baby at home has no business being on a boat in those kind of conditions. Like Sig says, if the boat goes down than who is going to be there for the baby! Best point that I ever heard Sig make, and I've watched many of the Deadliest Catch Shows. Family and safety comes first - always!! Sig is a caring father and does not want anything to happen to Mandy and her husband, and I think Sig just knew what he had to do. Tough decisions have to be made in life but in the end it was the right decision - and that is what matters!!!!!
The Bering Sea cares not of your family and will swallow you down, Captain Sig knows that.
There comes a time when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child.
