It would've been an honor to meet this gentleman in person...I go back to his videos from time to time. Carter Hall may seem simple to some but I've come to enjoy it. Matches you left a great impression on this old man...I certainly miss you. REST IN PEACE!
Don't be embarrassed about smoking Carter Hall. Be proud to smoke it. It's a classic. It's all about what you like. Who cares about how much you paid for it. I have smoked a lot of tobacco. I have found that price and status mean nothing most of the time. The drug store blends are just as good, and sometimes better than the fancy popular stuff. I smoke all the otc's regularly. I smoke them more than anything else. So do a lot of other guys. No need to be embarrassed.
Hey matches this was the first video I saw of yours! I will be smoking that vintage Carter Hall we spoke about in your honor. Thank you for your kindness. You will be missed. Rest easy man.
I want to thank you John for all your help with helping me find my tastes and pipe style preference. You told me to start with this blend and the blend that is my all day smoke now, Prince Albert. I will always be in your debt with your knowledge and your suggestions with helping with this lifestyle we love so much. I miss our Sunday chats on my success on finding my blends. John, I miss you in general. Our Friday nights without your live stream just isn't the same. I know you are up there in heaven with Danny Shore smoking your Haunted Bookshop and shooting the breeze. We are all carrying on your pipe smoking legacy down here.
Smoking it as I'm writing this. Got to share. I thought I had tamped down too hard when I got down the last quarter of my cob. I set the pipe and let cool. Just relit and brother, the smoke was sweet and creamy with a brownie note. Also noticed that the pipe didn't overheat and the smoke kept going. One thing I notice about OTCs is that the pipe needs to be thoroughly cleaned before smoking them. I use a plumber's brush to clean out the bowl. Then I'll wash the stem and run a bristle pipe cleaner through it and the air hole. Next a q-tip to clean the chamber and wipe out any excess in the bowl. Once I dried out Carter Hall and crushed it down slightly, it brought out all the flavors. Better than expected. Happy smoking, everyone.
Great video John, Wow I cant believe your weather, looks like spring. Classic pipe and blend combo you have there. I have always enjoyed Carter hall, consistent flavour and never disappointed. It has been a while since I had any. Hope your having a great weekend. Regards Mark
Miss Matches…with that said, I was never one to shy away from codger blends BECAUSE of this man. Early on, the first few years of my pipe smoking journey, I tried to pick up the fancier blends and rarely smoked the codger blends. But the more I watched guys like Matches860, Eric the Blue collar pipe smoker, or even Artful Codger, I started to realize that sometimes simpler, relaxing, familiar smokes can provide some of the most satisfying smokes. And now codger blends are constantly on my rotation.
Nice review John ! Carter Hall and Dr.Grabow pipes are like you said "American Classics". I'm actually smoking some Carter Hall as i type in one of my old Frank Medico pipes. I do have a large collection of old Dr.Grabow, Kaywoodies, KBB Yello Boles and Frank Medico pipes and all have seen many bowls of Carter Hall among other OTCs as well . One of my favorite smokes is to get a tub of Carter Hall ( i prefer the tubs as i think the tobacco is better in them for some reason ) and then mix in about 20% maduro cigar leaf . Let it sit for about three days and MAN OH MAN is it a great smoke!
And thank you for making these videos; they're a huge service to the community. Unfortunately, the only OTC that I can find locally is good ol' Prince Albert, unless I'm not looking hard enough. I love Prince Albert tobacco; very nutty and coco-ish. NEVER be embarrassed for smoking one of the great OTC blends. What would pipes be without tobacco, except for another piece of heritage, lost to the winds of "change". Keep up the great work.
I've got that same pipe - the first pipe I bought almost 30 years ago. I've burned it out but repaired it with activated charcoal mixed into plaster. You'd never know and it still smokes great today. Also CH is my everyday pipe tobacco. I love it.
I have fallen in love with Carter Hall after tolerating Captain Black. I really enjoy it, much more than any Cavendish I've smoked. At least, I enjoy it more than any of the tobacco that I've smoked here recently. Thank you for your inspiration and your stories of your journey in pipe smoking.
Hey John. Always enjoy lookin back on your relaxing and light-hearted videos-just you, a good pipe and some good baccy telling a story and sharing a smoke in a quiet undistracted setting. I always looked forward to weekend evenings when I was finally able to find the time to sit and relax and have a quiet pipe and listen to your funny and folksy tales. You’ve gone in a somewhat different direction now with more people, more distractions, more technology and longer “live” videos that I seldom have the time to sit thru or enjoy quite as much. I hope when the weather breaks and you can escape to your favorite quiet outdoor spot and let me/us enjoy that quiet intimate smoke again with you and listen to another fun story that you’ll do just that. Keep the faith brother and thanks for doing what you do! 👍 Tony K-Buffalo NY.
Yeah, I actually prefer to do videos outside while enjoying the pipe and my surroundings even though the popularity of live streaming beats the videos. You should see more videos as the weather improves!
Great video Zippo860! Congrats on 6,500 subs! Enjoying your videos today in the background as I work, but seeing as I had missed this when it first came out, I thought I'd say hi!
Excellent video Matches as always. So peaceful and while watching you enjoy that Carter Hall, I was picturing older times, perhaps better times when things were more relaxed. Not only with life itself, but also when people could enjoy their pipe, cigar, anywhere in public and nobody complained. Have a great weekend.
I just picked up my first box of this and have to say it grows on you. The simplicity I think is where it really shines. I've heard a few other ytpc reviewers say that the alcohol is extremely strong when you open the pouch and it's upfront and in your face- however I really had to search on mine to find it. To me it was a very mellow, pleasing, light chocolate, non-cig smell [heard that too] blend that definitely will be worked into my rotation. My only complaint was that while it burns very cool smoke wise, it burns extremely quickly. Comparitively I usually get about 45-60 mins per bowl of other burley blends, this was at 30 mins. Aside from that I think it wouod be great with some age where it could develop some more of the deeper chocolate notes that come naturally from the burley. I will certainly be stashing a few boxes away and try them at 5yrs, 10yrs, and 15 and see how it develops with some age. At $5 a pouch you really can't go wrong throwing some on the shelf to see how it develops.
As a newbie and as per your suggestion I added this to my rotation. All I can say is that months later it is my favorite so far and always my go to. Cheers, Matches! BTW, we love your videos outside!
There are very few who don't like Carter Hall and many keep some on hand all the time. I'm hoping life will settle down a bit to get out for a video, especially since the weather should be cooler as well.
Dead on review ! Glad to see there are other pipe smokers out there beside myself that still appreciate the codger blends. Yes i admit most codgers arent as good as they were as 40 to 50 years ago but there are some. Carter Hall is one of them , always liked it. You mentioned Edgeworth, Hearth and Home makes a blend called Classic Burley Kake, i would love to see you do a review on it. You would also like the blend its very good with notes of cocoa, rum, and anise. Keep on piping brother of the briar !
+Vince Sun I did get Classic Burley Kake and thoroughly enjoyed it. Regarding the old blends, you are so right...the ingredients have been changed too often so there is a loss there, but CH still tastes good to me.
Nice review matches! Carter in a cob is great as well! It’s been a few years since I had carter hall but I got some today and I really do enjoy it. A very nice easy going well behaved blend!!
Got sent some of this a couple of years ago from a friend in the states, it was nice, but a lot different to the over the counter blends we get in England, one thing that did get me thinking is how in all that's holy is it possible to only have the pouch very loosely closed, forget about it for over a year and a half, find it and then be utterly amazed at the fact it still has the same amount of moisture???? Either way nice smoke for when I wanted a smoke, and just get on with things
today is my first day into the hobby and i picked this little carter hall box up for 2.77$ and its my first smoke ever out of a traditional pipe. Well, traditional looking cause its a cheap chinese Jimbah pipe from the gas station just to experiment with. I obviously need to upgrade on the pipe but the carter hall, I like it. I'm already loving the hobby itself, so many things to know, especially as a fan of tobacco. good video man
I get chocolate in the Carter Hall tin note for sure, and I think I taste it every once in a while when retrohailing, but I get more of a cedar note than a chocolate when smoking. I really do love the brand. I don't think what a tobacco costs matters... you just have to ask, "do I enjoy it". I like a lot of the more expensive tobaccos too, but something like Lane 1-Q, Carter Hall, and Peter Stokkebye PS24 Noughat really hit the spot more often than not. I have several cogers in my rotation, too.
my grandfather smoked Carter Hall. The smell of his tobacco was one of my favorite childhood aromas. I decided to take up pipe smoking because of him. Unfortunately he got rid of all his old pipes when he gave up smoking about 10 years ago due to health issues. Kind of wish i had told him i would like to have his pipes, i'm sure he would have given them to me.
Hay that pipe is still looking good, I'm glad your taking good care of it. I was just going through my pipe tobaccos because I was putting a package together for a fellow YTPC member and I came across my pouch of Carter Hall, after watching your video I might revisit this blend and do a VR to this video...if I have your permission of course...lol
+PipeLeisure The Grabow has become a great friend, usually standing in when my all day pipe becomes too wet. Oh yeah, do a VR...I'd get a bang out of your impressions.
Oddly enough I've never had Carter Hall. I started with Prince Albert and got a bit tired of burley and have been exploring VA's and Latakia/orientals. I'm definitely going to return to burley someday.
For a moment there, between fall 2020 till spring of 2021 I had feared we may lose the presence of Prince Albert and Carter Hall as we miss your presence.. Although it is made elsewhere now, They are still just as good in flavor. American Icons seem to be fading for Global takeovers.. The longer I live, the more I miss.. RIP
Hey man I just bought my first Dr Grabow at the local drug store and will be braking it in with Carter Hall!!! Great videos sir!!! Thanks for the great OTC tobacco reviews
@@Matches860 Thanks man!!! I'm learning as I go and have been watching all kinds of how to videos and various tobacco reviews. And we have one tobacco shop in the area. I'm up in northwest Vermont so I'm starting with a lot of drug store blends old school stuff. I have 3 corn cobs and the one Dr Grabow, just picked up an old pipe rack with humidor. Thanks for responding to me.
This was a very helpful review... good information historically, great side comments, and good factual information. ( I guess it helps that I agreed with everything you mentioned in your "personal opinion" parts.) I agree with you on the "tobacco snobbery" elements within the pipe community. The so-called "drug store tobaccos" aren't all that bad for the money, especially when one doesn't have the money to literally burn. I'd throw in Medico pipes along with the time honored brands you mentioned, as well as Briggs tobacco (my grandfather smoked that). You've given me that little nudge to reacquaint myself with the good old all American brands that were ubiquitous 60 and 70 years ago. Thanks!
+3.14159265'd Piper (Pied Piper) Yes, thank you...Medico's,Yelo-bowls, and several other brands were the ones our grandads enjoyed. While I enjoy CH in a Savinelli or a Phil Rivara pipe, somehow the nostalgia gets lost.
Hello John, very nice review! Unfortunately I can not say much for the tobaccos but I like your videos very much! The best greetings to you and have a nice weekend! Thomas
I got a big smile on my face when I saw the notification that said Carter Hall :) Been smoking that lately. Really great stuff. I tried Prince Albert recently as well but definitely prefer CH. Your camera is looking really great John. Very clear! Hope you're good and filled my friend. Thanks for the video. Peace
+Matches860 Sounds perfect for a stroll! Opposite to that, I just acquired my grandfathers tripod. It's from the 60's or 70's I think. The thing weighs several pounds I'm sure. For those times I may be in a blizzard on Everest I suppose ;)
I started pipe smoking about 3 years ago with otc blends and a corn cob and a dr.grabow. sense then though your videos you have introduced me to C&d blends, savinelli pipes (witch are my favorite) have 8 now. And counting lol. So I watched this video and realized I somehow never got around to trying Carter hall. Now I know I don't have a big collection of tobaccos, couple dozen. But honestly... this in a corn cob is in my top 5. Thanks for the vids and the tips.
Thanks matches, I'm not a big aromatic tobacco fan but just the way you describe it I gotta try it. Just hope it don't have that perfumey hairspray punch I get from aromatics! Thanks brother! Love watching your vids
+Christopher Wick I share your sentiments...trust me! I have been turned off by the goopy aro's, but have also experienced those which are flavored with a lighter hand. I never considered CH as an aro, but since it contains flavoring, it's a given.
I've got some CH coming tomorrow and also some Lane 1Q, along with a new churchwarden. I've been a casual smoker for years and always smoked store jarred black cavendish. My pipe collection has grown and now I'm trying to venture out and find some different flavors. I tried some SG virginia flake; it was good but I guess I'm still searching for something that wows me, plus the flake isn't as convenient as other cuts. I do like the tobacco flavor but I think I'm an aromatic smoker at heart. Everyone is different and by reading reviews some may say a certain tobacco is the best and others say it tastes like ash. I've got to find a local shop where I could sample tobaccos. Thanks for your review!!
Enjoy the journey! Your taste will most likely continue to evolve and change. The wow tobacco of today may taste like garbage ten years from now. That's what makes it so interesting!
I can relate to your sentiments. I smoke Carter Hall (or SWR or Granger) in a Brigham or in a cob. The experience is definitely old-school smoking at its most nostalgic.
Thank you for the review....very pleasant indeed. I've always avoid Carter Hall (30 years) and I don't why. I know there's afficiados when it comes to this blend. Perhaps I should try. Smoking while writing this Black Frigate in old Chacom Billiard and I must the blend is quite tasty indeed.Have a nice sunday.
Thanks, for the review of Carter Hall. I have been a regular pipe smoker almost a year and found Carter Hall early. While I do try and like other tobaccos I always have a tub of Carter Hall. I do like smoking it in one of my Dr Grabow's or a cob. There is something about it that always brings me back. I like that you mentioned about feeling a little funny online when smoking Carter Hall. I think sometimes people overlook some of the OTC offerings because they are cheap. I think if you like Burley you are missing out to dismiss some of these just because they inexpensive.
+Fishin Piper Yes! Smoking Carter Hall is kind of like admitting that you're reading by an oil lamp or candle. There are many simple things in life that can bring happiness and those old school tobaccos are an example for sure.
CH produces tons of smoke and forms an excellent cake. Also a good blending tobacco as it absorbs what you mix it with rather than overpowering what you mix it with. If you have a real favorite that you want to last longer, mix in a little CH. Although I love it by itself. Can smoke all day with no bite.
Love the Carter Hall. I do pick up the cocoa and chocolate notes and my palate isn't as refined as some. I taste more chocolate in Sir Walter Raleigh, but they are pretty similar to me. Love the drugstore blends, no need for any "embarrassment". There is a reason they are so popular. Good, easy smoke, easy to find, and pretty good price. Thanks for the info John. Take care, Stephen
+imawrench Hi Stephen, our chemistry must be different as Sir Walter Raleigh has very little in the way of taste for me, although I do like it now and then. I hate to think about it, but I could be happy if these oldies were all that was available.
I kept finding myself going to Rite Aid to pick up a pouch of CH. Finally decided to buy a tub to save some coin. Glad I did as it's almost gone. I smoke burleys, aeros, and English blends, but seem to need a CH fix ever so often. Look forward to your review of Lanes RR. Also picked up a couple of ounces Match Edgeworth to compare. Match is cube cut like the original Edgeworth that I use to smoke many years ago. Both are quite interesting but certainly different. Hope you can review the Match Edgeworth sometime.
+Steven Emas I should have The Lane Limited, as well as a vintage sample of Edgeworth, which may be the same thing since Lane made the Edgeworth towards the end anyway. Anyhow, that should have some age on it.
Hi John, FINALLY... Thanks for reviewing Carter Hall! I'm a big fan of Prince Albert and so i hoped for a Carter Hall review, to hear the differences. So again thanks alot. Regards Flo
+McFlosen Thank you Flo! Given my history with CH, I'm surprised I never did a review. Prince Albert, as I said, is nearly identical with the exception of the topping, which also is done with a light hand and very enjoyable as you know.
I had a great Uncle that smoked Carter Hall in his big old bull dog pipe. I was very young and that pipe seemed so huge to me then. He also smoked a cherry flavored tobacco that made their house smell so good.
+CaneRodPiper It's pretty amazing! I figured this was going to be a waste of time reviewing such a well known old standby, until I noticed many folks asking questions about it on FB. I tend to forget that there are a lot of younger pipers out there who never experienced the old stuff!
My first bowel of the day, every day, since the late sixties has been Carter Hall. It goes wonderfully with that first cup of coffee. Later on I'll smoke something else but that's how I start the day.
Thanks for the reminder, John. CH has a fantastic room note if you've ever been around someone else smoking it. A question about Haunted Bookshop: can you smoke back-to-back bowls of it, day after day? It might actually be a bit too strong to do that with, but does the flavour wear well over time? The only tobacco I can do that with is Mac Baren Mixture. When I'm busy, I'll just load the humidor (from the 5 lb bulk bag) and saw through it. Sometimes for months. Cheers and Mellow Puffs, Mark
+Bartholomew Fotheringay-Phipps Hi Mark! Haunted Bookshop is 100% tobacco flavor which can offer you subtle side notes, from the Virginia in it I believe. Anyway, I have not tired of it since 2006.
Yes, just about anything will leave it's a scent in a new pipe, however, Carter Hall will burn cool which is what you want, and the flavoring is pretty neutral as far as things go.
Just curious Matches, how long have you been smoking? I am very intrigued by pipes. A nod to the past, and setting time aside to solve the world’s problems. I can’t imagine I would smoke more than a bowl per day, probably 2-3 times a week more realistically. I am concerned about the health issues... I will have to overcome that. I have watched a number of UA-cam videos, but any advice you could provide in getting started or any other words of wisdom would be appreciated! Carter Hall seems like it would be a good tobacco to start with. I have never really smoked tobacco, so want to stay with lower nicotine options, as I have no nicotine addiction or dependency. I really enjoy your reviews- Very enlightening and you make it look so tranquil and relaxing.
I've smoked pipes pretty regularly since the early 2000's. No one can give you the correct advise regarding your own health issues involved.I do believe we all weigh risks and decide accordingly. For me, the mental rewards outweigh the physical risk, especially at this stage of my life. Keep doing the research!
Thanks for the info, John! That's given me some thought to have my friend in Virginia send me some. Have to say I always chuckle at the phrase "American as apple pie", which is funny because apples originate in Kazakhstan and the earliest recipe for pie dates back to England in 1381; a long time before the US was "discovered"... :D. We're all the same under the great blue sky, my friend...! :D
+Blusax2 I realized during the edit that I forgot to mention the nicotine factor, as well as the difference in nicotine between CH and Haunted Bookshop. CH has enough nicotine to satisfy my cravings, but HB is stronger.
Prince Albert also contains cavendish. I haven't ever had Edgeworth. They just recently brought it back. The name is different though. I think it's called Lane Limited ready rubbed. I like the way the old tins looked.
Tx Thumper Ok, so I finally got around to ordering and then smoking Carter Hall and in a cob. I love this stuff! I had three bowls. It was cool, burned very nice, liked the smoke and had a really nice taste. I finally found my 1st all day smoke that’s not an aromatic. and affordable too!
If you like MM corncobs you can buy a forever stem from Vermont Freehand. It's a way better stem that will last a long time and can go from pipe to pipe. I just got one today.
I would love to have a day to smoke with you, smoking "OTC' Blends as i smoke all blends from English, ARo, VaPer, and all in between,. I would love to chat with you about Captain Black, what are your thoughts of the "new" dark blend?
Hey matches, i LOVE my pipes and love the whole act of loading a bowl of delicious aromatic smelling tobacco, and the relaxation/daydream effect that smoking a tobacco pipe brings me, BUT, i gotta say, im getting frustrated because of 2 things, The first is i feel like my tobacco used to taste good consistently and i get the hints of whatever flavors were put into it. (NOT ALL AROMATICS, I ONLY HAVE A HANDFUL I CAN TASTE THE FLAVORS), but lately it seems like i dont taste anything besides hot smoke! Im aware this COULD be because the tobacco is getting a little older maybe. The other thing, and this is my main frustration, i feel like when i watch you smoke, you seem to soo relaxingly take these little micro puffs (and big puffs too), but you produce alot of smoke! For me, if i want to produce a smoke, i have to get my pipe real hot so it cherries hard enough to produce that smoke. And THEN, if im not smoking it hot to get that good smoke cloud, i get barley ANNNY smoke clouds at all. My question i guess is, is it because im smoking out of cheaper pipes? is it the way i pack it? should i invest in one of the better made pipes like a peterson, or savanelli like you use? but then again, you’re using a grabow in this vid and you’re gettin the good clouds on the little puffs. Ive tried chopping the tobacco up into little bits instead of strands and that does help gove me a more consistent burn, but i still dont get those good clouds like you. Can you do a video on how you load your pipes and give tips you have if any on how to get consistent, NOT HOT smoke ? if you can that would be major! thanks
In regards to the first problem, quite simply, you may need to take a break from the usual tobacco and or smoking in general. More likely, you need to give your pipe(s) a thorough cleaning, especially shank and bowl. I find this is usually my problem and it sneaks up over time. Simply swabbing out the stem and shank with alcohol will usually make a difference. The second problem is not due to the pipe. Could be packing, lighting, or cadence related but you shouldn't have to get a pipe going like a blast furnace. Here, you'll need to experiment a bit. I have done a couple videos showing packing and I tend to just stuff & puff.
I like smoking OTCs in a Meerschaum. You really get a clean flavor from it and it kind of knocks out a little of the chemical taste you get if you puff on them a bit too hard. Did you ever get to smoke the old London Dock or Kentucky Club? There are some new versions of them I'm thinking about trying out this Summer.
+Matthew Gabbard I liked Kentucky Club, never tried London Dock. I have a couple Meerschaums, but they're so fragile and I'm kind of clutsy so they don't come out too often.
Hallo very interesting idea of Carter Hall .Excellent and good. I'll order it immediately in the US. Let's see what our customs says. They are sometimes a bit strange. Thank you and best regards from Cologne Frank
Hey bro i smoke carter hall velvet and captain black more then the high dollar blends i like them but cant always aford them. That dont bother me at all.I smoke cobs more then any other pipe same reson.Enjoy this vidoe take care my friend.
+Matches860 exactly. ..and BTW..I love old black and white movies with people smoking pipes. Particularly Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House, and British WWII movies.
Carter Hall is good stuff. Just like you said. Ease of smoking. I think you would enjoy peter stokkebye cube cut - virg/burley. Very tasty and inexpensive. take care John!
I quit pipes many years ago and came back to them 4 years ago. I have been smoking Trout Stream for most of the 4 years and needed a change. I am not sure why I tried Carter Hall since it is not a aromatic. I am glad I did. It is very mild and no bite. It is very basic and so far I am very happy I tried it. Now I want to try other otc brands. If there was a complaint it might be too mild but time will tell. Right now I am going to enjoy CH.
Technically, Carter Hall is an aromatic due to the added flavorings, but it is a mild aro compared to some others. You might find Sir Walter Raleigh (regular) to be the ultimate.
I have seen some say CH is aromatic and others say no. With Trout Stream and others my wife smells the smoke on me after I have a bowl full. Last night I had some CH and she did not say boo about the smoke. She hates the fact that I smoke so she is like a smoke bloodhound.....In either case I am I am enjoying CH and expect to try other non aromatics including SWR.....
Aromatics can actually be further broken down into two camps. Tobacco leaf which is cased, or infused are your heavy aro's that most folks call goopy or sickly sweet. Tobacco leaf with a topping, like CH will have a light, and sometimes difficult to trace flavoring because the leaf flavor is actually working with, or slightly overcoming the topping...I know, I hate this conversation too LOL
Smoke what you like! I usally smoke amphora original blend , captain black royal, erinmore mixture, right now im smoking smokers pride vanilla Cavendish that my father picked up for me on his trip to north Dakota. Eventually I would like to order tobacco online because the prices are crazy here in Canada.
Rest in peace, Matches. My deepest sympathies to your family.
It would've been an honor to meet this gentleman in person...I go back to his videos from time to time. Carter Hall may seem simple to some but I've come to enjoy it. Matches you left a great impression on this old man...I certainly miss you. REST IN PEACE!
Missing Matches! The way he talks is meditational.
A fan from Singapore.

I love these OTC American classic blends. They're so affordable and smoke incredibly well. Thanks for the video... now off to puff on some CH!
Damn I miss this legend!!! Thanks for all the azing content and time you allowed us to spend with you Matches!!!! Rest In Peace good Sir!!!!
Great video John,
Wow I cant believe your weather, looks like spring.
Classic pipe and blend combo you have there. I have always enjoyed Carter hall, consistent flavour and never disappointed. It has been a while since I had any. Hope your having a great weekend.
Regards
Mark
It's never too late to catch a video Richard! Thanks for watching (in the background).
That's one of the interesting aspects of this hobby...there is rarely an across the board agreement on anything!
I enjoyed your review of Carter Hall.... smooth and pleasant.....
A very enjoyable and informative review John. Thanks for posting.
Best,
Paul
+Paulus Von Schneider Thank you for joining me Paul! My best to you Buddy!
Great stuff. Had a couple bowls of Carter Hall in a little Medico this morning.
Thanks, John. Very nice little history lesson. You can't go wrong with Carter Hall. All things considered.....one of the best out there.
+GrandpaCavendish I agree Ed! It's one of the few older blends which seems to have retained its quality.
these reviews are always good. in fact I will have some Carter hall myself tonight. keep it up. take care
I'm already loving the hobby itself, so many things to know, especially as a fan of tobacco. good video man
Best Wishes my friend! All the information you need is somewhere here in YTPC!
Great video brother! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this tobacco.
Thanks for watching! CH is always a nice change when you want to get back to basics.
Good video as always. Thank you for posting this.
+Michaël Claveau My pleasure as always!
Hope you will enjoy! If you have any questions, there are thousands of pipers here on YT with the answers.
@@Matches860
Thanks man!!!
Finally picked up this blend today. What a wonderful smoke....great stuff!
+Erk Pik As I said, the flavor is such that it's tough to get tired of.
Just picked Carter Hall up. Very happy to see this review!
Thanks for the review I'm going to try this tobacco sounds really good
Thank you kind Sir. I will have to pick some up.
Hello John,
very nice review!
Unfortunately I can not say much for the tobaccos but I like your videos very much!
The best greetings to you and have a nice weekend!
Thomas
+Thomas Hünefeld Well Thomas, I most certainly appreciate you joining me! Best Wishes!
+Joshua In The Woods I have one old metal tripod and two modern plastic ones which are junk LOL...hang on to that!
+Matches860 Will do! :)
+Juan Garcia Corn cobs are terrific! I keep two on my desk at all times! Of course, they can't compete with my Friday Savinelli!
+Matches860 that's true
Nice review Matches. Congrats. I liked it so much. Thanks. Have a great weekend.
Thank you C.D.!
Love the review, im going to have try some CH now.
John, I enjoy your videos.
I can relate to your sentiments. I smoke Carter Hall (or SWR or Granger) in a Brigham or in a cob. The experience is definitely old-school smoking at its most nostalgic.
+Mark Seeley Fairly simple blends, but they certainly do the trick!
I love your videos John, take care, and cheers from Sweden.
+uffeman76 Thanks so much my friend!
Great video.. Strange thing is I have never tried Carter Hall.. but think I might give it a try
Take care,
Stephen
+imawrench Hi Stephen, our chemistry must be different as Sir Walter Raleigh has very little in the way of taste for me, although I do like it now and then. I hate to think about it, but I could be happy if these oldies were all that was available.
Miss you John. I've been on carter hall, granger, and prince albert this past month and I dont miss my fancier blends one bit.
Hi John,
FINALLY... Thanks for reviewing Carter Hall!
I'm a big fan of Prince Albert and so i hoped for a Carter Hall review, to hear the differences.
So again thanks alot.
Regards
Flo
+McFlosen Thank you Flo! Given my history with CH, I'm surprised I never did a review. Prince Albert, as I said, is nearly identical with the exception of the topping, which also is done with a light hand and very enjoyable as you know.
I get a chocolate milkshake or a chocolate malt. The coco is there, but there's also a "milk" component as well.
I had a great Uncle that smoked Carter Hall in his big old bull dog pipe. I was very young and that pipe seemed so huge to me then. He also smoked a cherry flavored tobacco that made their house smell so good.
Probably the good ole days when you were limited to a handful of domestic blends. We're spoiled now.
My grandfather smoked Carter Hall an I loved the smell of it now that I smoke pipe I also smoke Carter Hall one of my favorites 😎
I just picked up a pouch myself!
Another great video, and a very good tobacco. I probably smoke more CH than any other blend.
+CaneRodPiper It's pretty amazing! I figured this was going to be a waste of time reviewing such a well known old standby, until I noticed many folks asking questions about it on FB. I tend to forget that there are a lot of younger pipers out there who never experienced the old stuff!
Carter Hall is a good all around smoke,I try to always have some. Available.
Thanks again John!
My first bowel of the day, every day, since the late sixties has been Carter Hall. It goes wonderfully with that first cup of coffee. Later on I'll smoke something else but that's how I start the day.
+Bogie TV What a wonderful first smoke of the day!
When I'm to States I always try to Buy this or otherwise do have it via online, since its not available in Eu,at least so far,
Another good video bro. I'm a big burley fan. I learned some stuff. Thank you.
+sasquatch Thank you! Learning is what it's all about!
I find Carter Hall a very pleasant smoke. Very relaxing
My favorite codger blend. Smoking some right now. Cool and tasty!
I'd still be smoking it, had I not discovered Haunted Bookshop.
I have a box of Carter Hall in my work shop that I use in my shop pipe. Good stuff.
i love carter hall in a vintage Dr.Grabow
Just picked up some Carter Hall tonight to break in some new savs. Hope it works as well as everyone says.
+Leo Aldopold So true my friend! Nothing is really American since we all originated from somewhere else...except Native Americans of course!
+Matches860 who probably originated themselves from what is now Asia. But what the hay...! :D
Nice review. Have yet to try Carter Hall, or Haunted Bookshelf, but they are on my to do list.
+Bringer of Light Phenox Yes, I need to try the Lane RR. I hear it's just like the Edgeworth.
Matches860
That's good. I was hoping it would be the same. My grandfather smoked Edgeworth. I always wanted to try it.
heck yeah, only way to be more American is to smoke it in a Missouri meerschaum
There you go!
I just ordered some. I'm gonna try it in my one and only dr grabow. Nice review!
You can't get any more old school than those two together!
I'm a young guy, and I LOVE Carter Hall. Hearth and Home puts out a match blend that's fairly spot on too. Cheers.
+Pipedrum22 I do believe CH has stood the test of time...the flavor is such that I think it will remain popular forever.
I would love to have a day to smoke with you, smoking "OTC' Blends as i smoke all blends from English, ARo, VaPer, and all in between,. I would love to chat with you about Captain Black, what are your thoughts of the "new" dark blend?
Haunted bookshop owes you for advertising lol turned me on to it and haven't looked back.
Ive noticed after smoking haunted bookshop all day carter hall is a good calm smoke. I am having a bowl rite now as i do time to time
Yep, like going from whiskey to beer!
Hallo
very interesting idea of Carter Hall .Excellent and good. I'll order it immediately in the US. Let's see what our customs says. They are sometimes a bit strange. Thank you and best regards from Cologne
Frank
I hope you enjoy it, Frank!
Mal schauen wie lange der Postweg dauert .😉
Hey bro i smoke carter hall velvet and captain black more then the high dollar blends i like them but cant always aford them. That dont bother me at all.I smoke cobs more then any other pipe same reson.Enjoy this vidoe take care my friend.
I've smoked hundreds of high end tobaccos over the past 35 years. I always keep some CH around. You just can't go wrong. It's delicious.
+mercoid I agree! For me it's like taking time to watch an old black& white tv show...simplicity!
+Matches860 exactly. ..and BTW..I love old black and white movies with people smoking pipes. Particularly Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House, and British WWII movies.
G'day mate!!!! I have had Carter Hall, I think its a good blend for an OTC, the other OTC blend I really enjoy is Erinmore Flake :-)
+Alex George I've had some Erinmore in my tobacco stash at least ten years...I should try it!
+Matches860 indeed!! I will look forward to seeing your review on it mate!!!
I have to travel across the state line into NC to get Carter Hall and other decent OTC blends. Sadly, it's getting really hard to find them now.
+Christian Blade Same here, it used to be you could find the stuff at any little sore or gas station...those days are gone.
I want to try carter hall one day.
Big fan of both Dr Grabow and Carter Hall. Good Show... Good Show!
+Mark Zarecki (Roots Guy) Thank you Mark!
Carter Hall is good stuff. Just like you said. Ease of smoking. I think you would enjoy peter stokkebye cube cut - virg/burley. Very tasty and inexpensive. take care John!
+pipeheadOR I've tried a few P.S. blends...sounds good! Hope all is well with you Gil!
I consider Carter Hall to be my everyday smoke. If I could only have one tobacco, it would be CH. Thanks for sharing
I could easily survive if CH was the only thing available.
@@Matches860 Agreed
love it!!old joe krantz has my heart right now though.
+NYC drums Oh my, OJK is welcome in my pipe anytime too!
That's funny after I posted that comment. I saw Rick black said the same thing. Haha. That's awesome. I might me prophetic
That Vanilla Cavendish is what I smoked for about six years. It was packaged under various labels but was always the same stuff.
Matches860 a friend of mine was heading to Michigan so i asked him to pick me up some carter hall or half and half.
