  • This past week we had an exciting announcement on the site: the launch of our retail partnership with Roterfaden! I've long loved the Roterfaden Taschenbegleiter ("Bag" or "Pocket Companion") - the German clip-based binder/portfolio system that offers an unparalleled level of versatility by allowing you to use most standard-size notebooks and refills, including the ones that already might be part of your daily carry. For this reason I consider the Roterfaden to be more of a "Portfolio" than a stand-alone notebook system like Plotter or the Traveler's Notebook.
    In this video, I'll walk you through my own two personal Taschenbegleiters that I've been using. The A5 is several years old, and the A4 is one that I've purchased recently.
    As I mentioned, we now carry the Roterfaden line in our store: www.gentlemanstationer.com/cu...
    The refills featured in my personal Taschenbegleiters include:
    Plotter notebooks and notepads: plotterusa.com/
    Clairefontaine A4 French-ruled notebooks: www.gentlemanstationer.com/cu...
    Roterfaden notebooks: www.gentlemanstationer.com/cu...
    Laconic Tokyo: www.gentlemanstationer.com/cu...

    I bet a Rhodia notepad would fit in the back being they are a bit smaller than the A5.
    Excellent video, I think I am sold on this design. Thanks

    Great video. what brand/type of pen of pen do you have in that first planner?

      It's a Sunderland Machine Works Rollerball. This particular pen is a collaboration we did with them for our shop, which isn't available at the moment. I'm hoping that Sunderland picks back up and starts production again!

      They are both Schon DSGN Full-Size Fountain Pens. One in Ultem (on the left) and one in "Rainbow Sprinkles" anodized aluminum!

    Great overview. I do have a question. Do you think that a Hobonichi Cousin would fit in the A5 size? I am currently looking at covers for my 2024 Cousin and have been intrigued by the Roterfaden holders. But the notebook is a bit on the pricey side and I want to be sure that it would fit before purchasing. Thanks so much for your input.

      It should but I don't know that you would be able to use all three of the clips. I've used mine to hold a Nanami Paper Seven Seas Writer (which is an A5 Tomoe River notebook), and though it pushes the limit of the binder as a multi-refill notebook it does fit.

    Nice video. Just wanted to add that the vegan version uses very nice materials inside and out. None of this plastic-y inferior feel nonsense you get with many products.

      Thanks so much! I've found that they really try to do a good job with all of their products and use the best materials they can get while keeping the price somewhat reasonable for the craftsmanship.

    Do they make a B5 size? I’d like one to hold my Stalogy Editor 365 notebook I use as a daily log for work.

      It’s actually a 20+ year old Breitling! I just got it back from service (ouch) and it’s running like new again.

    Always an interesting system, but it isn't very elegant. Those thick covers also make it seem quite bulky. In this day when people love to chunk-up their binders it seems like a bulky one like this is limiting. I'm curious. May need to see it in person.

    • @TheGentlemanStationer
      @TheGentlemanStationer  9 місяців тому +2

      I'm not sure it's intended to necessarily be "elegant," (depending on how you use that term), but it's definitely a durable, easy to use way to keep multiple notebooks together and swap them out frequently, as I do.

    • @jcastano
      @jcastano 9 місяців тому +1

      @@TheGentlemanStationer The system is elegant. The entire of idea of using the clips is quite brilliant, but the materials are rough/industrial/utilitarian. It's not elegant in the aesthetic sense.

      I’ve been using Roterfaden system for a while now and use both A5 and A6 that I travel with. I have to tell you I do find them absolutely beautiful and a pleasure to use. The A5 SO_22 in smoke blue and honey interior is gorgeous. people always ask where I got it from. You have to see it in person to appreciate its quality. The A6 in black leather is well made but more utilitarian, which is fine with me. Quality stuff.

    • @mescellaneous
      @mescellaneous 2 місяці тому

      this is my conclusion as well. all this material definitely is more for the purpose of material looks. seen comments about how the clips get in the way. overall with all these notebook covers that promote grouping multiple notebooks, it seems more likely to take out the notebooks to use them, than to use it as one connected tome. and i feel the clips will be annoying over the long haul, having to individually remove both clips compared to just a string where you just pull the book out. but it certainly looks cool at first glance.

    You don't consider Roter Faden a system, because they don't sell proprietary inserts? Have you even looked at their shop? If the Taschenbegleiter isn't a system, I don't know what is. There's a wide varity of calendar, notebook, planner and sketchbook booklets, in three formats, designed as inserts for the Taschenbegleiter.
    Strange that you would make a whole video on a product you didn't even look into.

    • @TheGentlemanStationer
      @TheGentlemanStationer  6 місяців тому +1

      Actually, we carry the full line of Taschenbegleiter inserts and notebooks in our shop. You certainly can use Roterfaden as a "system," but for purposes of my discussion, what I meant was that if you buy a Taschenbegleiter, you're not locked into their "system" and can use what you like as long as it's generally A4/A5/A6 sized. Apologies for any confusion.

    With respect. that red band has actually damaged the shape your A5 notebook. Apparently, they cannot take simple measurements, keeping the contents of your notebook secure without damage to the outline of the notebook itself...my A5 notebook covers are hand made for me to my specification and the man who makes them for me is a true professional and a gentleman. I honestly think you deserve much better!!
