    Thanks Jai,
Thank you for making another fantastic training lesson. Precise translation in 3D relative to a curved surface is very tricky, and so you have to really plan yout our drawing approach . The clever part to this lesson is knowing how and where to relocate the UCS origin, then correctly orientate the X-Y plane. Finally, using the legacy polyline geometry of the semi-circle-rectangular segment and then translating it to the centre of the object is a master stroke.

  • @allfurone

Quite clear. Thank you. As a newer user, it helps to also see if you select the incorrect area or plane, what happens if you do, how to deselect or undo it, and then show the correct steps.

Jay, I am using ACAD 2018. I note that sometimes (yes sometimes not all times) when I do the final wedge section, the ""join"" function produces a spline and not polyline. I suspect there is something deep and subtle going on in my drawing. Are there techniques in ACAD to help solve these issues ?

After making the final part, the rib, you need to extrude the right side of the rib slightly to the right, that is x-direction, and union it to the main part to get a strong joint. Otherwise, you get a line contact only between big vertical cylinder and the rib which will ultimately affect the strength of the product.

For those who want to immediately jump in and defend AutoCAD please keep in mind I started out with AutoCAD for 3D work over 15 years ago, I stopped doing all 3D modeling for 10 years, and then took up SolidWorks. After watching this video I am sure I will stay with SolidWorks for 3D modeling. I find the moving of the XYZ coordinate tedious and a bit confusing. I believe this same part could have been drawn in 1/3 of the time with SW. I do not remember AutoCAD being so clunky in 3D modeling. With that statement, I would like to see two well-trained individuals draw this same part one in AutoCAD and the other using SolidWorks. It would be very interesting to see who could finish first and by how much.
