  • During the war in the middle 1940’s, the Ministry of Defense sought to replace the ATP watches by Type WWW (Wrist Watch Waterproof). A bit late perhaps, as the shipment of these began in spring 1945, when the war in Europe had ended. They’re engraved W.W.W. on the case back with a letter that identifies the maker:
    A : Vertex & Record
    F : Longines, Record and Jaeger-LeCoultre
    H : Büren
    K : Timor
    L : Lemania & Record
    M : IWC cal 83
    P : Cyma & Eterna
    Q : Eterna & Lemania
    Y : Omega

Still have one of these and 2 Omega, left over from the hundreds I used to fix in the 70s from the friend I used to fix them for who bought them from the British army surplus!

Another watch used by the British Army during WW2 was the Swiss Olma Military Watch which had a 18 jewel movement. I have one of these watches.

The Dirty Dozen watches were used during WW2 and delivery was made during the war not after, My late Grandfather was in the Famed British Army Commandos formed by Sir Winston Churchill and they had there own watch the Commando Watch which I believe was a Rolex / Omega or it may have been the Eterna Watch.

Great video - do have any safety concerns about storing or wearing the radium dialled versions?

Very interesting video and explanation. I notice you dont mention the Jaeger- LeCoultre of the same era. I have a very nice one that has had very little wear with what looks like an original fave, but it also has a P in a circle at the top of the second dial. Any information you have about this particular production would be appreciated...cheers

I would show off my JLC's, but I don't have any JLC WWW in my collection anymore. All of the WWW's are made in 1944-1945. Yours has a repainted MoD dial, the P is Prometheum, which is a replacement luminous material that was used for a very short period of time instead of radium (before switching to Tritium for everything). Can you email me? kabaclyde@gmail

Wow! Fun to see. As a teacher I can't afford those, the closest I will get to something like that is a remake like my new Vaer Dirty Dozen watch. It looks like the Eterna the most, 36mm, with a ETA 7001 (Eterna became ETA... I think, something like that). I do have a Civil War era pocket watch that is awesome, but inherited. :)

CYMA is the 234 movement, Omega the 30T2 Record the 22K TIMOR had a variation of the AS 1230 if I remember correctly, some more I forgot!

Great Video! How often do you need to wind youre dirty dozen watch? is it normal that these older vintage military watches needs to be winded more than once a day?

    • @kabawatch
      @kabawatch  3 роки тому +1

Only wind when using them. All of them should have a 40-48h power reserve, so you should only wind them once a day or once every few days. If you need to wind multiple times a day, your watch desperately needs a service

nice investment there, I have a timor and Vertex they seem to be the easiest to find along with the Record, Grana is probably the hardest to find. would love to get the IWC version. good luck with your collection.

great watches! enyone knows how good the watches were to survive the hurshes of fight? did they brake often? they could withstand shocks like crawling under fire? did we have eny war reports or records on their durability? i was in the greek army for 18 months in 1996 as a conscript soldier, nobody back then knew they were military watches! i had a quartz watch, civil model with leather strap, Q&Q japanese subbrand of citizen. it was afordable watch, with water resistant (30-50M) it was made of chromium plate case instead of full stainless steel case. worked great but the chromium plated case were having eroded signs around of the stainless steel case back, becouse of sweat in hot summer. and the leather strap hold its own for 1 year! i dont know if a mechanical watch can withstand many harsh tests like shock from moving fast.

I have my late father's Vertex circa 1942 which still keeps excellent time but the winder is very worn and keeping the watch wound up is becoming difficult.

Great to hear it’s stayed in the family. Sounds like maybe one of the wheels has worn down, or even the winding stem lubricant is just dry and now rubbing. It should be a cheap fix if you just attend to the problem. However like a car it might be best to service it all to keep other parts from needing to be replaced

Amazing collection. I´m just starting but in Mexico is impossible to find DD watches, only via Ebay or Chrono24! I already have Timor, Buren, Omega & Record if you want to sell one in your collection, please let me know.

Sure. I already sold most of my extra’s, and most were Record & Vertex. I do have an extra Eterna, and maybe another Vertex. I’ll have to check in a month or two from now
