  • Let's examine the long history of the Japan vs. Korea baseball rivalry as we prepare for the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
CORRECTION: The 2015 Premier12 was the last time Ohtani played for Samurai Japan in a tournament. He played in exhibition games in 2016 (when he hit a ball through the roof of Tokyo Dome) in preparation for the 2017 WBC but missed the tournament due to an injury.

Small correction: I meant to say the 2015 Premier12 was the last tournament Ohtani played in. He did suit up for Samurai Japan for exhibition games in 2016 (when he famously hit a ball through the roof of Tokyo Dome) but missed the 2017 WBC due to injury.

It should be also mentioned that the rivalry thing between Japan and South Korea in general is getting old among younger generation. As for the baseball rivalry, I think it exists only for fun, and it seems current players in each team respect each other as athletes more, and it feels for them the political/historic aspects are detached from baseball. A Korean pitcher recently made an inappropriate comment that's going viral now, but I'm pretty sure he said it as a joke, and also the fact the Korean society made it a scandal shows things have changed. Or at least this is what I'm hoping is happening, and the rivalry should be only for fun, which makes the upcoming WBC super exciting!

    • @YakyuCosmopolitan
      @YakyuCosmopolitan  Рік тому +26

Yes, the rivalry has definitely cooled down, especially on the baseball side of things. It does very much still exist on a political level but the younger generation is not really a part of it. I’m sure the pop culture exchange between the sides has really helped too.

It’s very difficult to watch games outside of Japan unfortunately. As far as legal options, Pacific League TV is a decent price and lets you stream anywhere. But as the name implies you don’t get any Central League games apart from some interleague. DAZN is the best baseball streaming service in Japan but has a VPN detector so unless you can crack that (some people can) it isn’t viable.
      Check www.reddit.com/r/NPB/wiki/index/ for other options.

We really need our schools and pro teams to change the way they run things to catch up with not only japan, but also international baseball. To be fair, Japan never really ever instigated the politicisation of the Japan-Korea derby.
But I think it's fair to say, Japan always looked down on Korean baseball, in the same way the MLB looks down on the NPB.
It's always the underdog that gets more fired up, and I think the first WBC started the rivalry. Ichiro, without malicious intentions, commented his expectation to breeze past South Korean team. SK, quite fairly, took this as disrespect, and reacted with the infamous "planting the flag" incident.
All of Japan witnessed this conduct, and Ichiro reacting to it ignited the rivalry for good. Japanese now see this as a game that cannot be lost - a source of pride towards a century old league.
I don't know how SK sees the game, but here in Japan, it seems very politicized. If you win, its "as expected", and if you lose, you're a national shame for two weeks.

Always love your content, and this one was a really good one too. I learned a lot about the background of the rivalry and it made me look more forward to the already anticipated upcoming classics.
I know this is a baseball channel and me commenting about this is probably against your intentions, but I have to note that the historical background you stated was extremely biased. Not saying it’s wrong, it could be or couldn’t be, just biased. One side is denying to accept the full claim of the other for a legitimate reason, and since it’s not resolved to this day, I thought you shouldn’t conclude one side’s story as a historical fact. Im ethnically Japanese but I would’ve said the same even if you were on the Japanese perspective. I study history/modern political science, and for what I can say that it’s extremely difficult to put any conclusion on this issue.
I’m not saying that you should research more or anything, as you’re an awesome baseball content creator, but I’d advise you to stay neutral on topics you don’t want to go deep on.

I’ve personally researched this era extensively in my studies. This is the conclusion I’ve come to, even as someone that is half-Japanese and non-Korean
I don’t think it’s an anti-Japanese perspective and I wanted to share this history because I think it’s necessary to understand the intensity of the rivalry. I wouldn’t have brought it up if I didn’t think it related to the baseball aspect of things.
But I appreciate your respectful comment, even if you disagree.

@@YakyuCosmopolitan thanks for your reply and my apologies for not understanding your intentions and not being aware that you have studied about this topic.
I would then like to additionally note that Japan isn’t really denying or not acknowledging South Korea’s claim itself to this day, as you said in the video. I don’t think there are any primary sources that supports that stance from the modern government of Japan. Rather, they are declining to respond to further compensations and apologies based on the stances of past agreements and treaties, as recent as the Japan-South Korea Comfort Women Agreement in 2015, that concreted that this issue was finally and irreversibly put to an end after many apologies and compensations over the years to up to hundreds of millions of yen and government aid.
I’m not trying to confront you or argue with you. I just thought explaining one side and ending it there isn’t “not going deep”.

Korean men's national and Japanese men's national soccer teams played since 1954, with 82 matches so far 42 korean victories, 23 draws, 16 japanese wins.
China had 262 total gold medals from all Olympic participation. South korea with 129. Japan with 169.
5 japanese played in the NBA (2 currently), 1 korean played in the NBA.
4 korean born players played in the NFL (not including half koreans born in usa like will demps or partial koreans like Kyler Murray or full koreans born in usa like eugene chung). 12 players in the NFL that was born in japan but none were ethnically japanese including rg3.

Most popular sports in korea: #1 baseball, #2 soccer (unless it's world cup), #3 basketball, #4 esports
Most popular sports in China: #1 basketball #2 soccer #3 ping-pong #4 badminton
The first korean to ever win a gold medal at the Olympics is another reason for tension between korea and Japan. Son kee chung won the marathon gold medal (setting a world record) at the 1936 berlin Olympics (the one Jesse Owens pissed off Hitler). At the time korea was a Japanese colony and Son was given a choice to represent japan and use his japanese alias or he couldn't participate in the Olympics. Japan still claim his achievement.

Recent years the sports rivalry became less politically and racially charged. Irchiro incorrectly predicted south korea and Taiwan wouldn't beat japan for 30 years back in 2006, while ohtani this year said korea is a top class team. Ohtani is hugely popular and respected by korean baseball fans. Nao kodaira rivalry with Lee sang Hwa and Mao asada rivalry with Kim Yuna I think was the beginning of friendship in rivalry with the two countries, I noticed a shift in attitude at least on the korean side. Yoshihiro akiyama (choo sung hoon in physical 100) is a zainichi mma fighter that was 4th generation born in japan but was a korean citizen. Rejected by korea to represent korea in judo, he decided to become japanese citizen and been a bridge to both countries.

Anywho I think the media likes to make so much drama out of the rivalry just to hype up. Japanese citizens obviously don’t see Korea as a rival in baseball. Korea hasn’t been a real threat since 2009. It’s been over a decade. While Japan has won several world tournaments 🏅 since then as well. Japan has dominated in the world so their main rival is the US not Korea.

The koreans planted their flags on the pitcher mound after winning which was an insult to the japanese. South korean news reported japanese imperial rising sun flag being waved at this year's wbc games.

Between 668 and 1910 Japan and Korea only fought twice, the the imjin war (1592-1598) and the mongol invasions of Japan (1274-1281). This as I live in South East Asia and was reported to the war tribunal by Dutch Colonel and European officers.

Yes Koreans were brutal in the Vietnam war. Still a difference between colonization with the systemic destruction of a country’s cultural identity, as opposed to isolated war crimes in one region of a country. Also, even if we were to assume Korea’s brutality was to the same level, that doesnt make what Japan did any less brutal, especially considering Japan did this long before Korea’s participation in the Vietnam war.

It was annexed, rest of the world didn’t disagree to do annexation at the time. Even the korean political parties wanted to be annexed by Japan due to Chinese and Russian imperialism.
In fact, Japan made average Korean life expectancy almost double, built many infrastructures, schools, hospitals, universities and more.
Before and after Japan took care of them, it’s a total different country. Please google search some pictures still you can see by yourself.

Not really, just athletes celebrating their victory by representing their respective countries. If you think national team celebrating with their national flag in an international tournament is ‘unsportsmanlike’, you should stick to college baseball

It was annexation, not colonization. Koreans asked Japanese to annex their country because they were afraid of Russia. A korean activist even took the life of a Japanese politician who opposed the annexation. That shows how desperate some Koreans were. Of course, for those who didn't want to be Japanese, the annexation was absolutely evil. But that's what Korean leaders at the time decided. Japan gave Korea money that was about three times their national budget, built schools, hospitals, factories, and many other things, increasing the population and the average life expectancy of Korea drastically. It was never intended to exploit Korea at all. It wasn't Japan's one-sided aggression like people think it was. Japan wanted Korea to be a strong wall between Japan and Russia because Japan also was afraid of Russia trying to expand their territory southward. Western propaganda about Japan and Germany is beyond insane.
