As a Brit who has been into baseball for years (and is also a big football (not calling it soccer) fan), seeing the WBC develop into something similar to the World Cup is so great to see. The atmosphere looks electric!
The WBC is doing wonders to bring new people into the game. I'm already seeing new baseball fans popping up in online groups saying the WBC has introduced them to the game. I guarantee that there are more baseball fans in the UK, Czech Republic, Colombia, Venezuela etc now than there were just a few weeks ago.
I just hope that next time Team GB spends more than £3.50 on jerseys!

The WBC is the World Series. It allows nations to compete and share the game we all love. There have been great stories coming out of this classic that will foster baseball in nations that got the opportunity to compete. I hope MLB takes the next step and sends teams to play regular season games in nations where baseball is nascent.

The World Series is the World Series. The world baseball order might not be as America-centric as it was, but the name should remain for the sake of legacy, as long as the World Series Champs are regarded as such and not WORLD CHAMPIONS.

I still remember Kenley Jansen in the first WBC, he was a random catcher in the Dodgers farm league and had managed to end up on the Netherlands team (he's from the Antilles) where he proceeded to throw out two MLB all-star baserunners trying to steal second from the Dominican Republic back to back. This was made all the more impressive by the fact the second throw was done from his knees.😅
Needless to say the second he got back from the tournament the Dodgers sent a pitching coach over to their farm league and transitioned him into being their star closer for the next decade.😊

everything is there. The hard thing going against the WBC is that they need the MLB to be complacent to them. With the need for the MLB to side with them comes the influence of the owners and the idiotics in part of the media.
It's not an easy road, but with more great players going against the wishes of their teams and playing no matter what, things are looking good for the future.
This will be bigger, not only because things are getting done right, but because now many fans are siding with it. If Artie Moreno stomps his feet about not allowing Ohtani and Trout to play in 3 years time he will not hear the end of it

The best WBC yet, this year baseball connected from far and wide in a way this game never had before. Though their have been 4 other WBC tournaments… something special clicked with this one.

I've payed more attention to this tournament than previous ones. It's been great despite the Diaz situation as a Mats fan.
Honestly I would like to see it expand more because I think they hurt themselves this year would some pools(ex: PR,DR,VENZ). You could have 32 teams over divided into 8 pools with pools taking place around the world. You can have the usual US, Japan, Canada, Korea, Taiwan host cities but you can return to places like Mexico and Puerto Rico. Can even have a European city host a pool. Then look how team Czech Republic became darlings and then look at some of the teams in the qualifiers. Imagine if Argentina made it after their win in the World Cup or Pakistan and shock American fans who probably never knew that they had a national team.
Seeing what has happened to Baseball Olympic level, this is basically the go to top international tournament. One last thing I've noticed and others have noticed especially after the scenes from crowds like Puerto Rico, Japan, and Taiwan fans is that the American fans need to take a look at themselves in how they can be engaged in MLB ballparks. I mean those international fans don't need pitch clocks to speed up a game. 3 hours might be too short for a game.

well, as someone that hails from the soccer culture originally, the wait makes it even more special. Some are lobbying for the World Cup to be every two years, but the majority of fans are against it.
Try to understand it as a cycle of things. You have this or that every year, another thing going on every other year, but for the WBC you need a bit more patience. If the quality remains the same or get better (likely the second option) the added years are worth, believe me.

As a dodgers fan, im used to see nearly 60k pack dodgers stadium even on a weekday. Nearly all 81 home games sell out. I took a look at attendance records and we average over 10k more fans a game than the 2nd most attended team. And it drops off significantly as you go down the list. I wish owners started spending on their teams more to give fans a reason to come to the ball park. It's crazy to think Marlins and dbacks fans have seen their stadium more full this past week then anytime in recent years.

Calling the WBC meaningless is myopia at its worst. I've also heard it being called "exhibition games" even though it is a sanctioned event by the highest governing body in world baseball and MLB. You don't have to like it if you don't want to but dismissing something as meaningless just because you don't value it is arrogant behavior and just further proves those kind of stereotypes of Americans.

well, if the british left any heritage to many in America was the sense of "insularism" (I don't even know if this term exists, but it's the sense of being the means and ends to everything).
England had the same in the earlier years of the FIFA World Cup, they did not played in the first three editions because they thought nobody was better than they were, they were the creators of the sport, etc.
They came for the 1950 World Cup here in my homecountry of Brazil, and the US of A showed England that the World meant business with the World Cup, and the best team would be crowned there and being the best wasn't a divine right (a 1x0 win for the US)

And even if it did, so what? This is an MLB tournament. MLB should run it to allow the most MLB level talent to compete.

My only complaint about WBC is that they play it in March, right before the seasons in US and Japan, the two most lucrative leagues with the best players from countries all over the world. If they play in November, they'll get better players who are better prepared and less worried about injuries. That would compete with football in the US, but not sure how big a difference that would make with the global audience numbers.

The time it’s at now is not perfect but optimal. If you have earlier, players off-season gets shortened. If you have it later not everybody is still playing some teams are eliminated from playoff contention so you’d have players sitting around waiting for it. Why not just shorten spring training by a week and keep the tournament the same.

there are some similarities. FIFA built the World Cup to be huge, so it could take the image of football, or part of it, out of the Olympics, they always had a massive rivalry with the IOC.
It was a project conceived for over 20 years. FIFA was created in 1903 and the World Cup had it's first edition 27 years later.
First edition was in Uruguay, the dominant force of football at the time and two time defending olympic gold medalist (Paris 1924 and Amsterdam 1928). This is still very remembered in Uruguay, the nation team nickname is olympic skyblues. Their national stadium, built for the 1930 World Cup which was the year of their centennial as an independent nation and is duly named Centenario, have the stands named Coulombes (for the 1924 olympics), Amsterdam (1928 olympics), Olympic (due to both medals) and America (due to the fact that Uruguay is the biggest winner of Copa America, the continental south american competition).
There was disdain by the nations of Great Britain. Due to them creating the game, they thought they were the best and even were out of FIFA during the first three editions. They got humbled by the US in 1950, the first edition they played.
Every other sport has tried to emulate the success of the World Cup, but it's hard due to some factors: relying on the good will of leagues like the MLB, NHL, etc to even get a competition going and the time.
The World Cup has been around for 93 years. And the call for national football teams on FIFA friendly dates and international competitions is MANDATORY. If a club doesn't allow a player to play the hammer comes down heavy on them, no one even dared, this is a rule as old as time, because the competitions that were first formed were international competitions, not club ones. Even in England that has a league for almost 150 years. And even the player will side against the club he plays for.
The World Cups is, for player, a DEFCON 1 event. The lifetime priority and dream. Before the Champions League was even thought, the World Cup was already big.
If the WBC wants to be big for baseball, the organizers should take the event with half the priority of the World Cup, it's more than good enough. If they mean business to go all in, it's all but assured.

I've always been a big fan of the WBC and I think it has the potential to reach the prestige of the FIFA World Cup one day. I think if they move the tourney from spring training to the offseason, like most international soccer tournaments (the exception being this last World Cup) happening during most of Europe's top leagues' offseasons, that will calm a lot of the "b-but player injury!" concerns.
