    Alcaraz has played only 2 professional grass matches, there are those who put him on the list of favorites for the year he is having, but don't expect anything extraordinary from him, reaching the 2nd week would already be a very, very good result.

      Actually, even though you mean well, it's very disrespectful to refer to Alcaraz as a kid.
      Think of it this way: if he arranges to meet his friends and watch a film will he say "me and the other kids are going to the cinema"?
      No. Back when I was 10 or perhaps even when I was 14, I might have said that, but not when I was 19 years old.
      It's infantilising. I think it's an American thing. I don't think any other people anywhere else on earth at any era would ever have maintained that a 19 year old is not a man.
      Let's show the man some respect.

    • @grimson

      @@adrrda6091 A 19 yr old on the Men's tour is still a kid. CA is nowhere near fully developed tennis wise both physically or mentally. He is just too good for his age and maybe a future #1. You just cannot compare him to you going to the movie with your pals at 19.

    • @adrrda6091
      @adrrda6091 2 роки тому +2

      @@grimson I disagree. The problem is that Americans have grown used to infantilising young men and insist on referring to them as kids. No other society anywhere on this planet has given 19 year olds and 10 year olds the same descriptive title.
      He's a young man. And the moment you refer to him as a young man, you immediately feel a greater respect for him. When you call him a kid, you're patronising him, as though you're fondly looking down at him.
      Trying calling him a man or a young man. When you do that, you'll realise it's true.
      His being younger than his peers and less well developed is neither here nor there.
      It's as though you'd refer to Nadal and to Novak as grandpa or 'old man' and you'd get used to it and defend it by explaining that they're older than their peers and that noone is saying they're literally grandparents.

  • @mskcouric
    @mskcouric 2 роки тому +152

    It's all about movement here. He looks positively turned around on some of these shots. His footwork is usually so excellent, but he's facing the wrong direction on half of Tiafoe's winners when they come off the racquet...
    And credit to Tiafoe. Played an aggressive flat game that ended points before Alcaraz could do anything of note. Every time it looked like Tiafoe was getting a pushed shot, he played something deep and/or hard and put CA on defense even more. Excellent match from Big Foe.

    • @hillwellford9637
      @hillwellford9637 2 роки тому +15

      The more experienced grass court player won. The ability to rob your opponent of time with a fast, flat shot, particularly on return of serve, is crucial on grass. Tiafoe has it, as the sequence at 7:17 shows. Alcaraz got a hard lesson today but he's got plenty of time to learn. You can't master every surface by the age of 19. Even the greats were specialists in their early careers.

    • @mskcouric
      @mskcouric 2 роки тому +4

      @@hillwellford9637 The thing is that Alcaraz hits such big groundstrokes, and is generally so good with his touch, that he SHOULD have a lot of upside on grass. And the foot speed, while not as critical as on slow hard courts or clay, should never be a disadvantage for him, but more a relative advantage over his opponents' lesser legs, even if grass rewards foot hustle less than the other surfaces.
      I don't expect Alcaraz to play this badly next week, but I also think it's premature for people to be calling for a QF or later appearance this year. I don't think he's ready, and that taped-together elbow is a big concern.

      looks the same as Nadal in his early career, his footwork isn't there becuase of the low fast bounce and most of the clay court players takes a few years to adapt to pro grass tennis and they basically have to adapt a new play style to start winning grass titles. I played once on grass and it's TOTALLY different than hard courts. The bounce is uneven and not nearly as high. The ball comes at you faster and flatter. If you have good flat or relatively flat strokes, then you can have better success. Even a topspin savant like Nadal flattens his strokes on the grass and relies more on precision and placement.

    Carlos is a terrific young player with colossal talent. But he gets caught out of position trying to run around his forehand too often, which tells me he doesn't have enough confidence in his backhand. Improving his backhand and his court positioning not playing too far behind the baseline are the only 2 weaknesses I see in his game. Here Tiafoe stood constantly right on top of the baseline, playing grass court style tennis. While Alcaraz consistently stood 3 ft behind the baseline, playing clay court style tennis.

    I can see three Americans in the second week of Wimbledon: Tiafoe, Paul, and Fritz. Possibly either Opelka or Isner, or both. (Never can count THOSE guys out on grass!) As for Alcaraz, he's going to get better on grass as he gains more experience. If he reaches the second week, that's huge for him at this stage in his career.
