Velvethamma Thanks Shawn, I like the idea of repairing the lid with what it is made of, I know there are a lot of great 2 part glues and epoxys that would work as well but this is simple.
Interesting - glad to have a recipe for ABS glue. I hope it sticks to the old stuff well, sure looked like it was melted into the other base material pretty well.
Have had to do similar repairs to my Ventures trunk. They like to crack all around the mounting plates. You can use the same chemicals with PVC as well. The ABS mix is handy for bumper covers. You can also make it using plastic pipe cement (same chemicals but may be easier for some folks to find these days)
Couldn't you just get some MegaBond and put in the hole? I plugged a hole in a valve cover with that stuff one time and it's still there and not leaking! I'd be worried about the heath hazards of using MEK without the proper saftey equipment. Read the MSDS sheet on that stuff. it's nasty... But, I guess if you have those chemicals on hand, looks like it worked.
+Sandy O'Neal Megabond or many other compounds may have worked well to plug the hole, but I wanted to cement the repair area with the exact component the lid was made of so there would be little or no chance of a reaction or failed bond at a later date. By using a solvent I also cemented the cracks radiating from the holes something another type of material would not have done. Working with any solvent harsher than water needs the proper precautions taken, always follow the precautions on the labels or download the MSDS sheets. That said the health hazards of riding a motorcycle can be far more severe than an occasional exposure to MEK or Acetone. Thanks for watchin and taking the time to coment.
Looks like a quality repair to me! I like your nib file :) The ones I have are glued to wooden blocks and can be difficult to hold sometimes
