LYRICS
If you were to
/ Zoom in / phase-out,
move in / focus on this
Human / whose cells magnify
as you fly through them, and see
Atoms, looming /
but you keep shooting past
protons, bosons, quarks 'til even a
part of a particle's too big / Then
boom / an end to the intrusion
/ As you hit the resolution of the
universe / the strands of its fabric
the tiniest fragment / the planck length,
past that, Gravity becomes
fallacy, try contrasting that with the
galaxies / try to grasp the huge magnitude
of the universe it's unimaginable.
But let's try anyway.
If that
insane length was one dollar bill
/ Then to reach the
wavelength of the smallest particles
Quarks, that are so fundamental
they don't have an inherent size
would be the current price you'd gain if you sold
Mount Everest made out of gold.
That is insane.
if you applied the Midas touch to my mind
it'd be quite enough to buy a car to drive
And the gluons and 3 quarks combined
make a large hadron those guys collide;
a proton / and to magnify to that
size would turn that Midas mountain
into a diamond / my
mind made of that could buy you an island
/ and next we ramp up, from
quarks and protons to atoms,
atoms the fractions of matter the ones that
that grant us our mass, and
if that quark was counted every time you take a
/ single breath / you'd respire
Midas mountains then
until your death
/ and if that life / was compressed
into one lock of hair / then as we
climb / up the rest / of these
atomic stairs / then we'd pass
/ DNA / when we get to my red streak
and the size of our cells
/ we equate / to every
hair on my head...
[Sometimes you make me feel so small
Can't comprehend your size
Yet I'm a giant in your eyes]
If we took my
head of hair that a cell represents
lifetimes of Midas Everest breaths
and then you would stretch it out to the skyline,
again and again
you'd find circle round the earth 10 times
before you meet me... and you.
Right here the reach of a human,
a meter or two / and if we were to choose
one song to represent those
horizons, an MP3 on our
device then to reach the size of the earth
compared to like our size
that's a terabyte hard drive filled with our files
it seems immense
And if we compress that collection to one word
to represent our world, then scaling coefficients
from the planet to the solar system
would let me re-read the whole of deathly hallows
awesome.
And then to travel between stars
as we take to the skies
Would be 10 times every word
you'll ever say in your life
And as an analogy of the expanse of
galaxies up in space
10 times the total of every word
in every book ever made
And to move up to the scale of galaxy clusters
would be every word said by everyone in Shanghai, in London
Berlin, delhi, LA, Mumbai, Sao Paulo and Moscow
Jakarta, Karachi, Dubai, Telford, Tokyo and Stockholm
And then to galaxy superclusters in the large-scale structure
with filaments that feel inadequately described as humungous
since if we stay with the scale of Earth as a word that equates
to all the words everyone alive today will ever say
finally we reach the biggest physical thing we can confirm
The indescribable size of the observable universe
which would be more than every word that every person ever has said
Every word that was ever written and every word that was ever read
[Sometimes you make me feel so small
Can't comprehend your size
Yet I'm a giant in your eyes.
I can't control the scope
But I'm not losing hope]
To summarise
Every word that every person has ever said in their lives
where each word implies enough MP3s to fill a terabyte hard drive
Where each song is 10 times the number drives to the horizon
that it'd take to ride around the world each time you set eyes on one
where each horizon is a head of hairs
and every hair there is the length of a lifetime
and each breath in that life is the price
of mount everest made entirely by midas
and that finally describes it, and it's increasing in size
So each time you listen to this song again
it'll be even more difficult to comprehend. - Наука та технологія
As if ViHart and Boyinaband weren't awesome enough on their own...
Balloon Shot I know right. I've known of ViHart for a while but I found Dave yesterday and am currently watching all of his videos.
VIHARTS HERE
We watched this in my physical science class and I literally fell out of my seat when I saw Dave.
bridget danport I wish MY teachers would show us Dave!
I'm literally sending his videos to my teachers not even joking XDD they haven't shown them yet tho ):
@@yaoipool8361 The boy in a band who told us to not go to school actually being shown on schools...AGAIN xD
I don't understand how people can get upset over a bunch of highly intelligent people getting together to create something that they are all passionate about. It's different, and while probably not the best way to learn for the first time, still a great way to compliment other knowledge. Props to Brady, Dave and Vi, this is going on my iPod.
(Oh and for the song in particular, electronic/rap might not be everyone's cup of tea but like it or not Dave did an excellent job of producing this track)
Highly intelligent lol
They thought the dislike button was "dis i like" (may have stolen that)
excellenté
I saw Dave and ViHart. Instant click.
This is the only work of art I have been more significantly moved by each time I see/hear it, every time I hear this the emotion I get from it is greater than the time before.
Since I'm not a native English-speaker and have far less knowledge about physics than I'd like to have, I had to listen to the song multible times, but nevertheless, it's very motivating to keep learning, watching, reading and discussing and MAYBE discover something new someday...
I haven't listened to this song in months. Still gives me goosebumps.
I always learn more listening to Dave than i ever did in school.
To the people complaining about the way the information is presented in this video:
This is an artistic way to represent the awe-inspiring scales involved in our universe. I don't think it was meant to be used as reference material for your dissertation. It is no different than poet's description of the majesty of nature by describing the delicate complexity of a rose.
I think it is great when science and art are combined to create a new way to enjoy the world around us.
To criticize this for not being clear, or concise enough; or for using creative licensing in the analogies, and similes used, to me, is like admonishing Picasso for not depicting the bombing of Guernica in a more detailed and photo-realistic fashion. It completely misses the point of the final product, and only serves to highlight the overarching ignorance of the critics.
Perfectly said.
This is extremely underrated, needs more views
This is bloody brilliant. To hear a rap about this? This man is a rare breed of brilliant. Very creative. And takes a large degree of intelligence to make a song about this sort of thing.
hey, its the dont stay in school guy!
Hehe
The helmets don't really fit the atmosphere of the song, but remember kids: safety first!
he has to wear a helmet around what I assume was a particle accelerator
+! “Guy With an Anime Avatar” ! Yeah it's the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland
It's probably mandatory, I visited an astronomical observatory with my school once and all of us had to wear those funny helmets :D
Luisa _ It definitely is.
They had to be safe, because maybe the impact of their words would come crashing down on them at any moment. XP
Why are they calling him "Dave Lens" instead of Dave Brown?
Where the hell has THIS been all my life?!
Holy shit o.O
Absolutely love this song. Can't stop listening.
***** how sweet...
hahaha same... found it slightly cringey first time.... I have now lost count of how many times I've posted it to facebook never mind listening to it haha
Dave Lens?
A rap about the universe...never in my life would I think I'd come across such a thing
dave man you never fail to send chills down my spine
Vi Hart's voice is awesome. I mean, I knew that already, but in a song like this? Amazing.
How did this song never reach 1,000,000+ views? Unbelievable.
If you write a math-metal song with an English physicist who has a UA-cam channel, you will end up visiting the LHC and hanging out with Vi Hart. The internet is awesome.
This is, in my opinion, the most under rated work of intellectual art in living memory.
His hair is awesome and kinda majestic.
I always come back to this some from time to time when Im like "there was this one awesome song about the universe with Vihart" 💕
Absolutely love it! Honestly made my life better🎼
*song not some 🤣
This is mind blowing. Just thinking about all of this. The first time I heard this it was night and I went outside to listen while looking at the stars. Well, the stars that I can see while living in a city.
I first heard this song 4 years ago and it made me feel proud to love science. It makes me sad to see latest comments being months ago; not to mention few and far between. So many people are missing out on this song.
We're still out there
And I'm just here deeply appreciating the Harry Potter reference ...
I come back to this every couple of months. For someone with an endless fascination toward scale like me, this shit is damn near spiritual.
Back again.
Again.
Seems like every 3 months I need my sense of scale calibrated. lol
Still gives me shivers.
holy shit, my favourite youtubers collaborating, how did I miss this?
I heard this on spotify from a random recommendation and for some reason I never put it together that boyinaband did the rapping
This is a collaboration that I never could imagine happening. And it happened 5 years ago.
8 years ago now
Sooo... Did Dave condense the Total Perspective Vortex into song form?
why is Dave names as Dave Lens in the desc? his name is Dave Brown is it not?
I went to comments for an explanation but...
it's been 8 years, we need an update
Dave as always your originality blows me away, great job! very brilliantly done my friend.
Don't you ever get a fucking haircut. And keep the streak red. You've gone so long without having to conform to trolls who don't like your look. You are unique and talented and you should have the freedom to express yourself in every way possible. They have the same freedom and turn around and look at what they think is wrong when they could click on another video and move on, but they don't because of some repressed anger or just because they feel they can get away with it because they don't have to face you in person. Or simply because they're not use to your look.
This is amazing. I could watch it again and again and again.
Since when is his last name Lens?
Many MANY years ago when I first started my career I contributed a very small part to the LHC (Large Hydron Collider). As such I always get a warm feeling in my heart whenever this or any video referring to the LHC crosses my feed.
Idk about the video but.. am I the only one who thinks the actual song was perfect and epic and nothing should be changed?
+Ally Sen agreed.
ViHart's singing tho'
This is by far the greatest science rap video ever made.
I don't know if you still read comments or even log on, I've listened to your music and watched your videos for years. This video, I listen to on a regular basis. The analogies and depth are so strong that it literally gives me goosebumps and brimgs tears to my eyes. I know you haven't uploaded in a long time but know that you are appreciated and missed. I sincerely hope you are doing well and remain successful.
Watching and listening to Dave is so calming...
considering how many times i've listened to this song, it must be impossible to comprehend
I have watched this video at least 30 times and each time I hear something new and am inspired to learn more about the vastness around us. Each time I hear and watch it I continue to be amazed. Such great work.
Yes. Screaming. My life is Dave screaming.
If my science teacher played this everytime class started, I'd love school
This was definetly not what I was looking for
David Mccaffrey he made one where he was just talking most people didn't even realize he was rhyming on that one
Fuckin genius! amazing how the older ya get the more you appreciate lyrics in songs. so many hidden meanings, comparisons, emotions, perspectives and in the case of this song, some education. Pure awesome and underneath it all a great track too. Dave keep up the good work bro.
+mattitude131 Vi Hart describes herself as a mathemusician, and I believe her primary instrument during her music education may have been song. Check out her channel if you haven't already, and you'll find several songs.
Anomalous analogies - coming at me at the speed of sound - or light, fantastic - tripping neurons in my brain, synapses - it's a lesson, and I'm listening - hearing - thinking, on the edge of it - looking into it - staring - seeing - fucking loving it!
I've studied this song hundreds of times and it still blows my mind to this day
I'm listening to it fairly often these days on Spotify, sadly I think the music alone is better than the video.
Dont mind me watching this before my exams lool
coming back to the comments of this video 9 years later & its still full of people taking this song way too seriously who are too repressed to express their passion for anything, projecting their insecurities onto the people in the video and calling them "cringe" because theyre incapable of enjoying media that they can detect a person behind and which hasnt been polished to inhuman standards by 50 layers of hollywood
This song is still fantastic in 2020
Best thing on the internet. Thanks brady
Mike glad you liked it!
np
Mike ikr
Perfect example of the type of horror Lovecraft loved.
Watched this clip again today, Mind is still blown. Love your work.
Every so often I come back and listen to this. I still love it.
This song is amazing! Im guessing the most of those two thousand people who disliked this video are people saying "That guy looks looks like transvestite"
dennis robinson No, I disliked it because the presentation method obscured the information. This might be fine if he was speaking to junior high school students, but most viewers of this channel are considerably older.
His appearance was trivial.
I'm 14 so yeah
Mat Broomfield Inaccurate. The way you'd present the information would undoubtedly be more obscured than this.
+Mat Broomfield BOOOOO
+Mat Broomfield I started watching this channel when I was 13... I've just started a physics degree, partly because of this channel very strongly appealing to 13 year old me and satisfying my interest in physics. A significant portion of people who watch these videos are in their early teens, it's not just those "considerably older" watching...
And God spoke: "The scale of the universe is my con, CERN."
That pun was more cringeworthy than this video
benneth white
That pun is smart and deep. You have no taste. ;-) Or just clouded by supposedly conflicting world view.
Dᴏᴡʟᴘʜɪɴ
nah jk dude i actually liked the pun because of its cleverness
The sheer amount of emotion in his voice from start to finish is rather moving.
So many people here who thinks the comments or the video is cringe...
Can't we all just get along?
Wait, this is the internet. Nevermind, continure your day.
It would've been cool if they brought up the multiverse and just ended it with infinity.
Sebastian Carrier It did end with...
Dave AND Vi Hart? I'VE NEVER CLICKED A VIDEO FASTER.
2013: Brains go extinct. This happened when the Dave comet crashed into the earth and began releasing ScaleOfTheUniverse gasses into the atmosphere. This caused the brains to explode and are now considered a great artefact of earths history.
i want more vihart !
Can ye repeat the bit where ye explained about the thing???
I have watched this video more times than I would care to admit, dissecting every little bit of the song to understand every wonderful quirk of the song.
That chorus sends shivers down my spine. great voice
I gotta hand it to these guys, that was pretty damn good, and I'm not even the world's biggest fan of rap...though I know how to appreciate talent. That was pretty damn cool!
we love this stuff. we want more.
Greetings from Betelgeuse.
Greetings
i cant believe you are not at millions of views yet. Physicists, and the layman, with a desire to understand the universe in which we live, will get an incredible kick out of this jam. My friend, i am from the dirty south, where that style of rapping was born. And you do it like its second nature; and with the lyrics that can connect with anyone who has tried to understand the universe in which we live.
The music is incredible, and the message is sublime.
p.s. I love the free samples you make available to us all!
There is probably at least one of your samples in each of my songs.
If the earth was the size of a basketball, pluto would be a speck of dust orbiting over 4000 miles away. .... or so I was told by my college astronomy yeacher.
This song is beautiful to me. To verbalize the scale of the universe on both a micro and macro level brings me to tears; its almost psychedelic. I remember when this song first dropped
He's very passionate, intelligent, and has talent. Screw everyone who's talking negative about it!
I would circle around the earth 10x to meet him XD
Love Davey! So happy I stumbled upon this lol
Awesome .... Love the perspective and the very talented peoples efforts behind this production!
Damn, I forgot how hard this beat dropped. Who's still here in 2019???
2021 holla
I fuckin' love multi talented, intelligent young people! SCREW YOU HATERS!
this guy is rappin' physics in class!
so i just spent about 3 hours figuring out that according to this song the universe is roughly $740502887742613100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 with an incomprehensible increase in value every second due to the fact that the universe is constantly expanding.
Greetings from 2021.
This is beautiful. I thought the first collaboration between you guys was good, but this exceeds it by..... By an observable universe's length! I WANT MORE! :O
Newcomer here ... what was the first collab?
"If we took my head of hair that a cell represents ... and then you would stretch it out to the skyline again and again you'd find you'd circle around the Earth 10 times before you reach me, and you"
I don't get it. What does he mean by "stretch it out to the skyline"? Can someone explain it to me please?
Kaleb is dead on, that is exactly what he means.
He's now saying 1 head of hair = the distance to the horizon.
Well this is certainly a crossover I never expected to see
Finally a way to explain to my friends that no matter how hard they look the wont see a plank length (except the fact that it doesn't really exist but is just a length of something immeasurable).
And that they wont be able to travel the length of the galaxy in a spaceship no matter how long they fly or how fast they go (in the span of their life time).
Thank you so much!
This song gave me goosebumps
i'm surprised that this video has less than a million views
why?
Boyinaband routinely get millions of views, check the channel.
Dont be. The average person is an idiot, and half of people fall below that standard.
The very first song of yours I ever heard about 3 years ago. I love it so much!
I really love this song, but I must admit, I was resistant to listen to it after the first time simply because it was already hard enough to grasp. But here I am, again and again, listening away, trying to comprehend. It really is amazing. This science and sscaling on observable universe.
Oh look, it's a Dave!
A rare one :O
:0
_A shiny Davemon has appeared._
@@imblue3531 ok that was funny 😂😂
it would be an even better song if he had spiky white hair with a white lab coat and some cool glasses :P
Oak?
im almost crying from how beautiful this is i cant even comprehend the song about the universe
I have shared this about 6 times on Facebook. I try and share it every few months. It is the definition of brilliant. Love it!
@Zsanett Fekete still love it
But if mount Everest was made of gold it would massively reduce the price of gold from inflation.
'The current price if you sold Mt. Everest made out of gold'
Keywork: current
But if some one got it first and monopolies it
Is that Boyinaband?!
How would you not know that? His hair is completely unique and plus he raps.
I was confused.
One of the priests at winter camp talked about how big various stars are in comparison to the earth if the earth were the size of a golf ball, and this was like the musical (and more concise) version of his talks. Amazing.
Thought it was Dave in the thumbnail but was sure it couldn't be, pleasantly surprised.
Soooo anyone else get the idea that dave likes harry potter?
