I moved from Canada to Portugal last year and for the first time in my life a gynaecologist offered HRT for my menopausal symptoms.

I am not having hot flashes or night sweats, thankfully, but the weight gain and joint aches sucks. My doctor told me exercise more and eat less. In his defense, I said no to HRT out of fear from cancer but hearing you makes me rethink HRT.

I've asked my OB/Gyn for a hormonal panel 2 years in a row to see a snapshot of where my hormones were after being in menopause for approx 7 years. symptoms were belly weight gain, sleep disruption, and night time hot flashes. Was informed by my doctor that I just needed to watch what I was eating more closely and see you next year. Are you kidding?!

I had every symptom...quite severe...was told 6-12 months of HRT and then have to suck it up... hubby felt lethargic was told he could have lifelong testosterone and Viagra... it's not an equal world...we are 50% of the population and deserve better.

Ps, just trying to function, sex life doesn't exist... nor is that important when getting through the next 24hours is your reality...why is this a priority for men's health, and not even a thought for women, there is a serious discrepancy here🤔

Age 55, requested help from my gyno NP (woman age 58) who said no and suggested a supplement. Made appointment with gyno MD in same group for a Menopause appointment. He said no, likely to cause cancer. He put me on Escitalopram for the hot flashes. I spoke to my GP who said she was uncomfortable prescribing it. Finally, I found I could get it online from Alloy. I have now taken 100 mg Progesterone and .5 Estradiol. Sleeping so much better, no hot flashes anymore, no depression.

I am in the middle of this right now. Was gaining weight for no reason. Found out I was insulin resistance but they never did a hormonal panel to see if my other hormones were imbalance. I just asked my endocrinologist yesterday for a hormones panel. This so frustrating that a patient has to tell a dr. what to do. I am 55 years young and would like them to do their job!

I asked for a hormone panel and was told “do some research and tell me what you want. There are 10,000 hormones”. So I asked my NP friend and then asked for “Total testosterone , Estradiol, Progesterone , FSH LH, Fasting insulin ,Androtesterone” Dr said their lab couldn’t do the androtestosterone but did the others. My bioavailable testosterone was less than 1. My estradiol was 11.8. My progest was 0.41. I’m only 42. THEN insurance only covered half of the labs for some reason so now I owe $200!

Yeah, no insurance and the full hormone panel cost me $600 out of pocket. Also had my uterus out 7 yrs ago at 38, no coaching on the fact that peri would hit me sooner. No coaching on HRT. Nothing from 2 doctors who I felt were absolutely qualified. But now I feel let down bc even as I told my GP at my last check up I'm experiencing night sweats, no libido, vaginal dryness, fatigue, joint pain, no recommendation for HRT. Thanks for sharing your knowledge ❤ working with maca root, red clover, magnesium, zinc, k12, vit D, in addition to my healthy diet and minimal alcohol. Also cut caffeine over a year ago. It's not always easy to be so disciplined but I can feel a clear difference 😊

I had no offer of tests, let alone HRT treatments! I was told, basically, my body is changing, I have to learn to deal with it, and to maybe consider mindfulness 🤷🏻‍♀️ that's the UK for you!! Hi Dr. Mary. I live in Portugal and the reality of gynecologists confortable with hrt seems to be the same as what you describe in the US. However, I'm happy to tell you that I was given the option in May by my gynecologist🎉.
I know lots of women who are on hrt and the number seems to be growing🎉. So, the trend is changing, I believe.

  • @charleedell92

Know the clinical guidelines in your country, better still take a copy with you. If you want hrt, tell the doctor that. If you just go in and list your symptoms without clearly stating your objectives you are less likely to get treated appropriately. Take a friend or family member. When asked about family history, make sure they know everyone who had osteoporosis. If your second cousin's neighbour had breast cancer or a blood clot, maybe leave that out. It has no bearing on you but a less confident provider could jump on it to deny you hrt. Be clear you want a therapeutic dose of your chosen preparation, not the lowest available dose of whatever their formulary says is cheapest. And don't be discouraged if you don't get anywhere the first time. Keep going. Be as tenacious as you would if your child needed medical treatment. If offered antidepressants, decline them (unless you actually are depressed) and even then you still deserve treatment for menopausal symptoms as well!

I come from supplement industry. Love that you are recommending probiotics! I have preached this for years! Love the Garden of Life you take, but I prefer the Renew Life 150bil with 40 strain diversity. You are so correct, it is the diversity that makes the difference. These are pricey, but worth every penny. Just stock up during sales. I always ask customer or friends who balk at the price... "Would you pay $70/month for magic fix to help you lose weight?" All say yes. They spend money on other things: apps, gyms, non proven weight loss supplements, etc. Probiotics can be like magic for SO many things, even mood. Loving you!

She just said "Well, if I had a pound for every middle-aged who said the same thing to me!". Last year I spoke to a young male doctor who was more interested and knowledgeable but he didn't ask for my symptoms, just wanted me to do my own research about HRT and get back to him. I respect the study you've done in the menopause arena, and since few have even done it, I'm still willing to listen to certain things, but you really need to update. Most of us know the truth about cholesterol and saturated fats now, even medical journals have been quietly updated. And its hard to believe anyone still has their blinders on in regards to the jab with all the harms its been proven to do! I was even concerned at one point about the hrt I take because you dont recommend it because there arent enough studies--just to find out you're perfectly fine with the experimental jab?! The doubts are running strong, I think at this point I'm still going to try the diet for awhile to see if it helps because I've exhausted other options and I respect that youve done a lot of study in this particular area (keeping my animal fats tho), but I think you may have jumped off the boat once business was good--if you are passionate about helping us, you need to stay up to date!

My first gynecologist I went to in Connecticut, whom I chose because I saw her name on a list of gynecologist who help women with menopausal symptoms, told me if I was depressed I should go to a therapist but any other menopausal symptoms I would basically have to suck it up about! My new gynecologist I started seeing last weekt wants to try Fosteum Plus (?) and some lifestyle changes. The Fosteum plus isn't covered by my insurance though. Does it help?? I have aaaallll the symptoms you mentioned in the first 5 minutes of your video!!

Any recommendations on how to go forward when you‘re physically exhibiting multiple perimenopausal symptoms, but the hormone levels in your blood tests look ok? I‘ve only started testing my level this year as I started having symptoms of perimenopause with hair loss, skin texture changes, weight issues, sleep issues although my diet and training have improved greatly. Plus I am turning 50 next month. My partner thinks that my levels in oestrogen and progesterone were probably much higher at my peak fertility. I tend to agree as I‘m a very naturally busty, curvy female with a clockwork menstrual cycle that runs on the heavier side.

I’m curious if my symptoms are low with diet, is hormone replacement necessary for brain and physical health? My doc said wouldn’t prescribe when had symptoms, but diet has helped tremendously.

Before I knew anything about HRT, I went to an Endocrinologist to find out if my hormones were okay. He did blood work and did not prescribe anything whenI reviewed my bloodwork late googling what he tested...he actually tested for estrogen and fsh and said nothing, prescribed nothing. Said I was okay. I went back and asked for HRT and he said no, because it can cause breast cancer. Still stuck on the Women's Health Initiative. Around the same time, I went to my Gynocologist for a pap smear and he has a sign outside his office that says "Menopause", yet after I brought him my bloodwork that my Endocrinologist did and he didn't tell me about HRT. I later realized he could have when I saw I had no estrogen and he knew I was in menopause. Why should I have to ask. He is an old doctor like the Endocrinologist, so I assume he doesn't like to prescribe HRT or was I the one that was supposed to bring it up? How is the patient supposed to bring up something they don't know about? They are the healthcare professionals that are supposed to take care of us. Well, apparently we have to watch out for ourselves and educate ourselves. I switched to another Gyno I found on Menopause.org thanks to Dr. Haver. I have been prescribed HRT now. I am in Florida. Thank you Dr. Haver for all this information!!!!

My results were consistent with peri menopause. I was offered low dose progesterone and the pill. I have a cousin who got breast cancer after starting HRT and I’m at risk for blood clots. I really need help for my symptoms of fatigue, belly fat, weight gain, and mood swings. What is my best option?

I was thrown into menopause surgically at 32. I'm 62 and my new GYN wants me off HRT immediately. She said Im high risk of stroke because of being on HRT for so long. Im starting to experience tons of symptoms which she said is not related. No labs done. Gained 10 lbs in 6 months, can't sleep hot flashes, no energy. I'm very concerned. How do I find a provider that will work with me?

I was told by one doctor that I was in the process of menopause, I have an IUD so I already do not have a period. I went to an OB/GYN to get my hormone levels tested and she said that since I have an IUD I cannot get my hormone levels tested. She said having the IUD should help me with any symptoms that I would be having if I was in menopause but there’s no way of her telling me if I am in menopause because I have an IUD. I am concerned about the depression, part that I’m having, a little of the mood swings, hair, thinning, breaking off, dry skin.

I am a 55 year old woman who has been in perimenopause for quite a few years. I went to my doctor for HRT and they told me I wasn't a candidate for it because my mother died from breast cancer. I don't know what to do? I take a probiotic everyday, try and remember to take iodine and I rarely eat junk food. I still have hot flashes, disturbed sleep, and a spare tire around my middle, and absolutely no libido. I welcome any suggestions you can offer. Thank you so much for helping us women who don't seem to be relevant anymore since we can't have babies, etc, anymore. So frustrating!

My doctor wants me to go 3 months off of the pill and see if my symptoms change. I just turned 50 and my doctor says it is unsafe to stay on it. I've had severe dysmenorhea and have been on it since I was 14. I also have PCOS and probably endometriosis. My doc is a member of NAMA. I told her I saw a list of 20 menopause symptoms and I have 17 of them. She immediately said there could be other reasons to have all those symptoms. True, but perhaps not. I have 4 pills left.
Will I feel better with nothing? Will I feel worse? I'm afraid my doctor won't care for me properly. I imagine I'll feel worse.😢

You have a right to a second opinion. Here is an article to help you find a menopause educated doctor. There are also telemedicine options in case you live in an area that doesn't have a lot of choice in doctors.

@maryclairehavermd8473 Thank you for your reply. I will read your link. There is a recommended local doctor in my area, but the waitlist is about a year out. I'll keep looking. I'm curious if it's reasonable to try 3 months on no type of hormones to see what happens?

How do we know how to talk about dosages of estrogen & progesterone, if our Dr. is not well versed? What dose to start, how to know when and what adjustments are needed, like what symptoms mean more or less estrogen or more or less progesterone?
