    There is something slightly terrifying about this, All these Eggmans in the big arm robot flying at Sonic as his world deteriorates, and then Sonic finally defeats one of the robots and breaks open the capsule exposing the animals to the horrifying glitched world. Then you think that Sonic will transition to the next zone, but he doesn't. He's trapped in this broken world, forced to wander his corrupted reality forever.

    Got bored and decided to research as to why the zone kept crashing you after you go underwater. Turns out that the glitch exists in the regular act 1, but it's hidden well because there aren't really many instances you can trigger it. The reason why this happens is because the water deformation has a fit if the water goes above screen, flooding the RAM from the start of the scroll buffer to the end of RAM ($E000-$FFFF), which would crash the game by the next VBlank latest.
    Not checked the object spawning one, but I think it has something to do with RAM being read outside of the layout memory, since it's always offscreen coordinates.

      @@coolswag33 Fun fact: There is a glitch in Sonic 3 that can change Sonic's palette into Something similiar to Sonic.exe. You just have to use Debug Mode and leave from it while the ending Sonic is on screen after defeating Big Arms.

      I like to think of it as Classic era Eggman's ultimate creation. Sure, he made other impressive creations (Metal Sonic for how developed he is, and Mecha Sonic being able to turn Super) but Big Arms being able to snap Sonic out of Super Form is pretty cool.

    All that's happening here is that memory addresses related to other things start to get overwritten with level data. Happens with any level if you go past the level lock with the camera following.

      Eric Fisher Objects in the game have an x/y flip property. So that's why this happens, Big Arms is spawned upside down.

    This glitch is insane but similar to the sonic controls himself glitch when I was playing around with debug in the sonic classic collection port for the Nintendo ds I went into mushroom hill zone and I placed a ton of hyper monitors and when I spin dashed through all of them it teleported me to the exact starting locations of where you would start in sonic and knuckles on Sonics path and the game started controlling its self for 5 minutes and at one point the game would just pause until I held down the a button where the game would move one Frame at a time while held down I then hit the Y button and it took me to sonic and knuckles even though I was playing sonic 3 and knuckles and when the demo popped up it started playing a demo from marble garden act 1 even though it was sonic and knuckles and around 5 seconds into the demo the game froze and I hit y again and it was just like regular sonic and knuckles but when I started playing I had debug on which was weird because in classic collection for sonic and knuckles you can only get level select so I tried the thing again I placed tons of super monitors and did a spin dash and this time it teleported me but it didn’t start moving sonic by himself it took me back to sonic 3 and knuckles and I would use this cool traveling between games glitch to mess with debug in sonic and knuckles when I started as knuckles in sonic and knuckles I was able to move around and play the act while the opening cutscene was showing but o couldn’t see much cause it was a glitchy mess, I’d say that that is probably my glitchiest experience with this game but no matter how broken it is I still think it’s the best sonic game and best game of its time.

    I have a few questions related to this video and a few questions unrelated/minor that I'd like to be answered.
    *Related:*
    1. Would this glitch be possible in other versions and modifications of this game? eg: S3 and its prototype, Sonic 3 Limited Edition, S3 Complete. I know that Sonic 3 Limited Edition had S3 zones in it so would it display the same result. Big Arms is naturally included (as in not leftover data) in S3 and it's prototype (as far as my knowledge) so what would defeating it do? Cue the Credits scene? Would the same screenlock codes be applicable?
    2. Is this the same level slot as Angel Island Act 2?, because it shows Act 2 in the title card, or is it the Act 1 slot?. Is the "miniboss" in the cutscene defeatable in 8 hits or does it just have infinite health? Is it even the real miniboss we see at the end of Act 1 to begin with?
    3. Why the hell is the game loading unused objects? RAM corruption or to account for the blank space of this in-between state?
    4. Would it be possible to remove the cutscene data entirely? If so, would the same glitch happen or would it just stay screenlocked at where the cutscene takes place? I personally think the scene loads the next part of the level that makes it possible to progress. Would be cool if that was tested.
    *Unrelated/Minor.*
    1. Possible to change Act 1 (after burn) and Act 2 to Act 1's palette before it burns? It would be nice to see how it would look like without the glitches and stuff.
    2. Do prototypes of S&K after Sonic 3 Limited Edition have S3 zone data? Do they also contain Tails data?
    3. How do you come up with ideas for your uploads? Are these things you found while experimenting, in complete accident, or are you just redocumenting already reported things with a little more insight?
    4. Can you make a Discord server for us fans to talk with you? I think it would be good if us fans could connect with you somewhere else other than UA-cam.

      Hey, no problem! I don't mind answering questions.
      Related:
      1. Yes it would be, but with different effects depending on the version used. Defeating Big Arms would cause the ending to take place, yes. The screen lock codes should be compatible with all versions of Sonic 3 since RAM addresses often remain the same.
      2. I believe the apparent act is Act 2, while the level itself is Act 1. The miniboss in the cutscene has unlimited health normally. While it is a separate object from the regular boss, a lot of the code is reused where applicable. It was pretty much reworked from the normal boss to work as a cutscene.
      3. RAM corruption. The object load manager bugs out and loads incorrect data. Luckily, this isn't something that would occur in regular gameplay.
      4. You could remove the cutscene miniboss from the level, but doing so would result in no way for the game to transition to Act 2.
      Unrelated:
      1. Yes it is possible, but Act 1's palette doesn't completely fit Act 2's graphics.
      2. There's a few things, but it's there just for use in S3&K. Tails data is included in S&K for the same reason.

    Essentially, it works akin to the Arbitrary Code Execution exploit in Super Mario World - that is, by overflowing game's active RAM with junk data, you can alter the programming for existing and currently loaded level. It's just that, for SMW, people have already found out how to inject SPECIFIC commands during overflows, while in this case it's just a random/junk data, hence why we can see different, seemingly random, bosses from different zones here in AIZ.
    Another interesting overflow, which seems to be far less random, is the one in Gumball Machine Bonus Stage, where you can trigger Big Arm boss and AIZ opening cutscene.
    Real cool stuff.

    Going into camera X of $8000+ is pretty much guaranteed to fuck up everything, and I'm p sure it's because literally nothing in the game expects the MSB of the camera position to be set, so some parts of the game could actually treat it as signed. I've been tracing parts of the game with bizhawk and honestly it's been pretty nice to be able dig deep into the game.
    Also, why don't you use e.g. Gens-rr and use the AVI dump feature? It's a way more accurate way to record emulator output, and you won't have to deal with the ugly watermark. I personally use ffmpeg for crisp upscaling.
    Also, OBS is a much better screen recorder.

      Hyper Yeah, the strangest things can happen. The outcome here was similar to the glowing orbs Bonus Stage. S3&K stores objects inside of 2 object pointer lists. The first one is used for Angel Island to Launch Base, as well as all the Bonus Stages and Flying Battery (Originally zone 5).
      The second list is used for the rest of the S&K zones. This seems to usually determine what gets spawned in a certain zone. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but most of them are events that are not restricted to a certain object.
      As for the Gens-rr AVI dump feature, that sounds like a good idea. I would use OBS to record, but the 32-bit version is slow, and I don't have the hardware to support it anyway.

      From what I've seen, what actually makes these objects spawn is that the game keeps two pointers to the object data: to the back of the list, and to the front of it, at $F772 and $F776. During normal gameplay, the game keeps these pointers intact, but once you do a cycle trick, the front can end up way behind the back, and the game doesn't know when exactly to stop reading the data. Due to how the sprite data is structured, going off the end of the table results in the game reading from the data of a different stage, since they are contiguous on the ROM - however, it may end up reading things with the wrong offset, which usually is the case, and crash the game. You can prevent that by filling up the object attribute table. If you are interested, the sprite data table is at 1E3D98, and it's labeled as SpriteLocPtrs in skdisasm. Curiously, most objects spawned this way will immediately disappear due to being way too far from your actual location.
      Also, it looks like some of the objects that can spawn point to 0xFFFFFFFF, which is quite interesting, since I don't think the object manager can spawn those. I'm gonna try to capture the stack as that happens and see what _actually_ writes there.

      That's really interesting. That explains why the game becomes so unstable. I wonder what part triggers stuff like the Blue Sphere game mode, glitch levels, and etc. They don't seem to be related to objects. You should try the half-cycle trick in Hidden Palace zone. You will see some strange results.

      Yeah, the HPZ stuff is cool. The game reloads the LBZ2 boss sequence graphics, and does some other really weird things.
      Blue sphere is a completely separate gamemode, at $F600, although you can spawn regular objects and they will work just fine - including the end of act signpost, which would spawn the end of level tally. However, short of reloading the graphics, it doesn't do much since the game reloads the current level, etc. from $FE49 ~ $FE64. No idea if it's possible to screw up the gamemode without memory hacking; it doesn't seem like you can do much from inside the stage. Maybe it would be possible to spawn a glitched object that would cause a transition to that gamemode _with_ all the objects intact, same as how Sandopolis can change the gamemode to the Blue Sphere level complete screen.
      Some of the events are actually just hardcoded checks. I wrote a script for bizhawk that displays every read of the camera X position with a cmpi.w instruction; it's able to accurately predict around 50% of the triggers. Here's what it looks like: hyper.is-a.cat/s/KUc98at0.png
      Some of them (e.g. HCZ2 boss) are, however, based on the object loading, and so they don't show. I do wonder if it's possible to predict what objects would be loaded once the camera follows a certain location.
      Glitch levels themselves are extremely simple - they use the 2p competition mode camera, the same value that causes the camera to go haywire when you break a bunch of S boxes. You effectively overflow the Kosinski decompression queue, and write to the $FF80+ memory region, where that value is located in - along with the demo mode flag, which explains why you can't control sonic after you break them. The game reacts differently when you load the stage with that camera mode on - not sure why, however.
      A more sophisticated way to screw up the $FF80+ region is to use ORKAL's megaglitch, which overflows the sprite data instead by spawning way too many rings - the ring manager has the same problem as the sprite manager! However, the sprite manager stops when the dynamic object RAM is filled, but the ring manager does not, and so it just goes on forever. By the way, this is exactly why the palette is screwed up once your camera X scrolls into the ~$FE00 region. The megaglitch also makes the game jump to the soft reset pointer, which makes the game not clear the RAM. A well-timed soft reset should do the same in any stage where you can push the camera into the $FE00 region.
      God, I put so much research into this game. Maybe I should make some videos on it.

      It should be possible to make an object change the game mode to blue sphere. The game can spawn some glitched monitors that have certain effects such as soft resetting the game, giving you a crazy amount of rings, resetting the level, etc. It wouldn't be easy but it should be possible. It looks as if it's also possible to cause similar glitches without debug mode through complicated means (A speedrunner found a way to spawn the Twin Hammer Launch Base boss in Ice cap.)
      I think it would be a great idea if you made videos about this. They would be cool to see.
      (Edit) Do you know what causes the water to load in Sandopolis? The water palette looks so authentic that it doesn't even make sense how the game made it.

    I take it once you go past X-coordinate FFFF, the game goes back to X-coordinate 0000 and freaks out like how Marble Garden's miniboss freaks out in Sonic 3 alone, only in reverse?

      Well at least we know that his code still exists in S3&K, this probably happened due to his coordinates not being moved during development, and being in the place of an unused level slot not executed by the game normally; he probably could still kill Super Sonic or maybe even Hyper Sonic!

    Después que los acontecimientos del sonic 2 sonic y tails llegan a Angel Island la famosa isla flotante que gracias a la potente esmeralda maestra flota pero algo que oculta la isla es que su esmeralda tiene poderes tan inmensos que provocan paradojas dimensionales y corrupciones en la realidad.
    Cuando Eggman llega a Angel Island este es recibido por Knuckles el equidna el guardian de la potente esmeralda maestra y Eggman lo engaña mintiendole que Sonic y Tails son la verdadera amenaza por lo que Eggman crea al robot que incendia la isla pero no tan conforme al resultado le pide a Knuckles que le de un poco de energía de la esmeralda maestra y acepta.
    Después de que Sonic y Tails llegan a la isla y knuckles los agrede estos llegan a la emboscada de parte de la chatarra que prende fuego pero cuando está por lanzar sus proyectiles Sonic reacciona rapido destrozandolo en el acto pero trajo graves consecuencias al ser destruido la energía potente de la esmeralda maestra que tenía almacenada es liberada causando grandes destrozos en la isla y alteraciones en algunas partes. 0:52 1:08 7:47
    Sonic y Tails se van a explorar el lugar pero habían loops infinitos del mismo lugar cada vez que avanzaban mas los loops estaban cada vez más deteriorados.
    Eggman al descubrir que la energía de la esmeralda maestra fue liberada aprovecha la energía potente clonandose entre si 6:08 o trayendo seres idénticos a el de otros universos 5:24 con el mismo objetivo de matar a Sonic y Tails.
    Knuckles vio lo sucedido e intento pararlo pero este es atrapado por los glitches y los errores de textura muriendo en el acto (supongamos eso porque no se lo ve en el video y para darle sentido a la historia :v) Sonic empieza a luchar con valentía 10:29 y evitar ser corrompido ya que algunas entidades que lo atacaban estaban corrompidas 5:57 y uno agarra a Sonic 6:40
    Sonic pensaba que no podria salvarse pero por suerte logro romper los brazos del Big Arms 6:43 y al intentar abrir la capsula aparece el clon 6:47 pero reaccionó rápido y lo rompió 6:49 abriendo la cápsula sin problemas 6:57
    Parecía que la pesadilla acabo pero surgio un problema y es que Tails y Sonic estaba paralizados no podían moverse 7:10 pero sonic logra moverse 7:12 e intenta hacer algo al respecto para que Tails se mueva pero en eso dos Eggrobos que estaban ahi 7:57 arrojan dos bombas que causarian una explosión 4:21 el lugar aparte de ser una realidad alterada parecía el mismísimo infierno 4:27 con explosiones entidades extrañas corrupciones en la realidad y el fuego sucumbiendo la isla veraniega y verdosa que era antes.
    Sin remedio alguno del caos provocado por Eggman o mas bien por el mismísimo Sonic 0:13 Tails con un teletransportador se va con Sonic lejos del caos total 8:00 pero algo que destrozaría a Tails es que Sonic fue corrompido por la maldición de la esmeralda maestra 9:11 por lo que no le quedaba tanto tiempo de vida y Sonic le dijo "No te preocupes por mí Tails podre sobrevivir a esto y si no la salvación del mundo esta en tus manos" por otro lado Eggman estaba satisfecho que la maldición de la esmeralda maestra estaba jugando a su favor pero no sabia que pronto el karma actuaría corrompiendolo 5:56
    Y asi mi banda es como un video de errores comunes y divertidos de un simple juego seria desde la perspectiva del personaje una catástrofe total sin arreglo.

    It’s because you’re not supposed to that so the game doesn’t now what to do so it load what happens in another level and pressing down in debug
    Mode try’s to correct by going into the stage before it but then it unloads the sprite and maybe it will correct it error and that’s it

    So basically what’s going on here is that the level cant generate the next half with out Fire Guy Robot Dude and you transition into act 2
    Both of those things corrupt the game apparently and it gets worse the more you go on and eventually kills the game.

    You can finish Act 2 while in Act 1, I don't remember how I did it. I just know that I did some weird stuff and got to the Eggman Boss, but the game still thought I was in Act 1.

    Clearly the game thinks he's in fbz act 2. The "Sonic moving by himself" thing seems to be the transition to sandopolis. Big arms comes in other glitches as well, and it loads the knuckles mhz transition.
